In his book ‘Regenerative Gardening Made Easy,’ Stephen Butcher makes a detailed and impassioned plea for home gardeners to adopt his recommended techniques for creating a regenerative garden. His argument is detailed, informative, and convincing. He states how commercial farming has robbed both the soil and our foods of nutrients and shows how, in our own small-scale gardens, we can move on from organic methods to create a soil that regenerates itself without the need for additional organic fertilisers and nutrients. At this point, not only will our food be great tasting but it will also have top nutritional qualities. What’s not to like? The book is divided into chapters, each with its own focus. In the section on soil quality we are told not to disturb the earth after the first tilling, emphasising the benefits of compost and mulch. In the section on predators, we are advised , perhaps contra- intuitively, to allow sacrificial grazing., for some pests can also be food for beneficial creatures. Unexpected and refreshing advice like this is scattered throughout the book. But perhaps the most useful, and easy to reference chapter is that on growing common garden plants such as tomatoes and aubergines, and also how best to nurture seeds. Finally, a short section with recipes, shows us how to make the best use of our delicious and nutritious produce. All in all, I highly recommend this book to any serious gardener, who is not only seeking easy gardening tips, but who wishes to learn the science behind the best gardening methods possible.
Our garden was a mess, and I wanted to redo the entire thing, but I did not want to make the same mistake, leading me to dig everything up in two years. So, I downloaded Regenerative Gardening Made Easy by Stephen Butcher to take a fresh approach to gardening. I expected this to be a primer on composing, but that was not the case. Stephen first outlined a complete philosophy of treating the soil as a whole. He provided information about different approaches depending on the application, available material, and long-term goals. I especially appreciated the chapter titled “Maximum Photosynthesis for Better Yield.” That taught me much about maximizing a small space for the best possible yield. I also liked the pesto recipe Stephen provided. It tasted excellent. This book was easy to read, had great content, and helped get my garden whipped into shape. I recommend it to anybody who wishes to get their garden into shape for the long term.
The thought of being able to go to your home garden and pick fresh basil and heirloom tomatoes to make a caprese salad is attractive, and something I would love to do, even with my brown thumbs. Upon careful perusal of this book, it becomes clear that the answer really does lie in the soil and the author gives detailed information about how to achieve optimum soil health. He discusses the impact farming practices have had on insects which are crucial part of many ecosystems. There is information about landscape design, companion planting and constructing raised garden beds. If you just want to put a seedling in the ground and hope it grows, this might be too detailed for you, but if you are prepared to invest time into creating a healthy garden, literally from the ground up, this is an interesting and very informative book. It is well laid out so you can skip to the topics that interest you most.
I highly recommend this book, "Regenerative Gardening Made Easy." My husband and I were eager to step up our backyard gardening game in an ecologically responsible way, and this book truly helped us achieve that goal. The author does a fantastic job of taking what can often be complicated topics—like soil health, pest control, and boosting crop yields—and breaking them down into steps that are easy to digest and implement. The advice is clear, practical, and actionable, allowing you to start applying the regenerative gardening techniques immediately.
We also especially appreciate the book’s focus on natural and sustainable methods to grow nutrient-rich produce, which is, of course, better for your health and the environment. Whether you’re new to gardening or have some experience, this book makes achieving your gardening goals very accessible. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in organic and sustainable gardening.
This book is a very helpful guide to starting and maintaining an effective and sustainable garden of fresh fruit and vegetables for beginners and experienced gardeners alike. The material is geared towards the home gardener, as opposed to larger scale operations, which made the book far more approachable and relevant for me personally.
The author goes into a good deal of detail on how your garden works as an ecosystem from how to handle larger pests and predators down to the microbial level. This made home gardening more rewarding, not only in the sense that I get to enjoy my own home grown food knowing exactly what environment it came from, but also in that I can appreciate the delicate natural balance of my garden and appreciate the impact I have on it. The book also contains some nice recipes for you to use to enjoy your fresh bounty.
Overall this is a great book for gardeners of any level. It is an easy read with a good amount of detail and the perfect length.
This is the first book I have read from this author and I must say it was quite a great, informative, well written read for those that want to get into gardening and for those that want more tips on how to garden better.
This book is about and explains how to keep your garden and soil healthy so you can grow the best food and vegetables that you can. What I like about the book and also something that I learned was how important it is to keep your soil healthy not to use products used on expensive lawns such as weed killers and other chemicals.
But what I liked the most about this book is also how it explains how to take care of your garden and how to bring it back to life if you have a dying garden, This was a good, helpful, fantastic read and I would like to read more from the author.
Stephen Butcher, thanks very much for dedicating your time to write this book, as Extreme High School Environmental Conservation Club, we haven't yet red it all, but the little we have covered is resourceful in both issues concerning Environmental Conservation and Regenerative farming.
Regards, Ethan Timothy, Programing Coordinator, Extreme Hgh School Environmental Conservation and Regenerative farming club
This is a solid resource for both beginner and long time gardeners. Our soil's health is key to a healthy and abundant space. Decades have been devoted to expansive lawns free of weeds maintained with weed and feed sprays, this book will help guide you through rebuilding your soil biome.
I appreciate he delved into the why behind it all. The science of healthy soils is wacky, weird, and wonderful stuff.
The book is interesting and is easy to read. As I already practice no-dig gardening and non-chemical treatments I already knew a little about soil microbes and fungi, but Steve's book explained and described it in such way that it does not seem complicated. I very much liked the chapter with plants' combinations and loved the recipes. Definitely will return to read it again and make notes.
A great read for the gardener who is looking to increase the nutrient value of the garden crop by working with rather than fighting against nature. Reading this book has motivated me to achieve the highest yields and best food quality for my family.
I was wooed by the title simple, and in many ways, it is simple, just not for the complete beginner. It is still a good resource, and as I develop the hobby of gardening, i'm sure it will become even more helpful
I do not have a green thumb so this is my third book on gardening. Of the three, this book did a much better job explaining how to use nature to grow and nurture the garden. I know with this incredible knowledge my garden may finally grow and flourish
