Death On the Back Nine is the sixth entry in the Myrtle Mystery series. A cozy/traditional murder mystery set in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. It continues the story of Clark Thomas, a windowed bookstore owner and occasional sleuth, solving a few puzzles and still dealing with his late wife's murder. He also has a girlfriend Andrea. His brother, Bo, is in town during this mystery and it takes place at the golf course, durning a game of golf. Then a player is killed before the 11th hole. This time Clark and Detective Moody workto solve the case. It was great.
It is interesting to read a book and be familiar with all the places that are mentioned. Golf is not my forte, but the mysteries surrounding this particular round of golf kept me on the edge of my seat. Wygal so always has a twist at the end that I never suspect.
I found the first few chapters a bit boring because it had to do with golf but once I got past that the book picked up. The ending was a surprise, did not see it coming. But still waiting to hear more about Autumn.
My 2 star rating is an unpopular opinion . Maybe it’s because I’m not a golfer and there was so much golf in here with descriptions of the game, the course, the paths around the golf course, the golf club house. Also as there were 2 foursomes at the center of the mystery, I found it difficult to keep characters straight. The 2nd half of the book picked up as it got away from the golf course and there were a few surprises for the reader at the end. I do love reading about mysteries in a town I know so well and look forward to the next in the series.
The ending to this book had my jaw drop… but based off what we know from previous books in the series, I shouldn’t have been surprised. This series also is no longer a stand alone read- you pretty much have to read them in order (in my opinion) to really appreciate/understand the next. Can’t wait for the next one!
This series keeps getting better and better. I love a good mystery! And this series is filled with them!! Such good writing skills, keeps your interest and not a lot of fluff!!
Caleb’s books just keep getting better and better. This was my favorite of the series so far. I’m going to have to start the series from the beginning again because I just realized either I missed or forget about a special guest appearance in each book until I saw it in this book. I was so excited, I felt like I found an Easter egg. 😉
I was fortunate enough to get into this series on the ground floor and have been part of the author's ARC team on this series from day one.
The book takes place in picturesque Myrtle Beach, NC, and follows the tale of Clark Thomas, a bookstore owner haunted by his wife's unsolved murder, who returns and is joined by his brother for a round of golf. A leisurely game takes a dark turn when a player ahead of them is murdered on the 11th hole, thrusting Clark and Detective Moody into a baffling investigation filled with secrets and grudges.
The pool of suspects starts relatively small, at first limited to members of the foursome, but expands to a much wider pool of suspects as motives for this crime begin to pile up and it is how the case is solved that proves how formidable this series has become

In reviews for the previous books in the series, I have made comparisons to the 80's television show "Murder She Wrote" and how a local author is pulled into assisting the local police department with solving murders that occur in the community. The author refers to this comparison as part of the story (I'd be absolutely over the moon if my words in the previous reviews had any inspiration for this verbiage in the novel).
As far as a rating goes, I would easily give this novel a solid five stars and believe that this novel would be a favorite of any cozy mystery aficionado as the ending leaves you wanting more in this story.
As with all my literary ramblings, this is just a few of my five cents worth.
Death On The Back Nine - a review by Rosemary Kenny.
A murder-mystery that could be straight out of an Agatha Christie whodunit, Caleb Wygal's Death On The Back Nine takes place on part of an exclusive golf course. Writer and bookstore owner Clark Thomas, police Detective Moody, Clark's rich brother Bo and Moody's friend Tom prepare to play a quiet round...that soon becomes a murder investigation for Moody and Clark. With many twists and turns, Caleb Wygal brilliantly ratchets up the tension, the list of suspects and possible motives all skillfully woven among Clark's personal flashbacks, and peeks into his current emotional tinderbox of a love-life, with all its complications.
A thrilling crime-case that will keep you turning the pages long into the night, get your copy of Death On The Back Nine to see what it's all about!
Love this series! Can’t wait to find out about Autumn finally in the next book. Left on a cliff hanger at the end. This is a book that tells a lot about golf and I am not a golfer. Some things are not explained well for those who are clueless about golf, but doesn’t hi hinder the story line. This book, unlike the others, doesn’t solve the murder the way the others do and that is the reason I did not like this one as much. But that is my personal opinion. The book overall lives up to the great expectations we have for Clark and the gang.
Another home run for Caleb Wygal. Every book in this series kept me guessing until the very end. The characters are incredibly entertaining. Since I'm from South Carolina and visit Myrtle Beach frequently, reading about familiar locations helps me "see" the action as it happens. My only regret is that I now have to wait months to finally get to the conclusion of what happened to Clark's wife. It's hard to wait for a release of a great book.
While I like Caleb Wygal’s mystery books and have read the whole series (about to read his latest, book 7) my rating had to do with my lack of knowledge about golf. The ending was unexpected and he keeps the reader wanting more. Each book is a Clift hanger, there forever. I have continued with his series. So yes, he maintains interest in his characters and plot.
This book has a complicated and extensive plot, but it is pretty well written. There are a lot of twists and turns and an ending that you don't see coming. You feel Clark's ongoing confusion about his feelings for Gina, but there's no clarity in sight. I look forward to the next book in the series.
This was a fast and action packed read that kept you turning the pages. It was filled with intrigue, Secrets, golf, twists and turns. Clark Thomas owns a book store and helps the police department with Cases. The tale deals with deception , families, ties, and truth. A well written and told mystery with an Open ended conclusion. Recommended
I really like this series. Clark continues to find himself in the middle of murders that happen in Myrtle Beach. And, he is also trying to determine what actually happened to his wife 3 years ago (he thought she died from a heart attack, but it seems there may have been foul play). Is everyone corrupt in MB????
And now it all begins to unfold. This story was intriguing in so many ways. The best so far. I know the finale is coming and I can’t wait yet I wasn’t to wait so it doesn’t end. Thank you Caleb Wygal for your writing.
It took this far in the series for a really good read. Gone is the travelogue feel. The characters are fully developed and it was an easy, interesting read. He promises answers in the next one and I pray that's true.
This book was ok. It was an easy read, but not as suspenseful as the previous ones. If someone had not read the others first, this one would have been better. I liked all the previous ones better.
it was a bit to get through all the golf stuff and the step by step following the golfers but after that it was whooohoooo. I really really enjoy this author. I have number 7 at home and i really hope that he keeps writing to this serious!
Another "can't put it down" success from Caleb Wygal! I feel like I am right along side Clark as he solves another murder on the Grand Strand. really anxious for the next book!
This installment had the most twists and turns, despicable characters, and intriguing story so far. I really hope that the series continues to be such a page turner. I love Clark and Gomez.
