Vengeance Born: A Grim & Reaper Netherworld Tale

Rate this book
Two Dark Tales. One deliciously haunting book.

Enter the Netherworld and dive into the dark with Grim and Reaper. The resident lords of Purgia may govern the deathly dealings of the night, but faced with the matters of their heart, their worlds get turned upside down.

When an enigmatic woman begs Thelios Mirth to save she and her sister from the clutches of Hades, the Grim Lord finds himself gambling with the unexpected. His heart.

Lord Roark wants for nothing but to reap the strays and vagabonds roaming the city of Purgia, but when a ward of the High Prince seeks his help against rebel forces, he forsakes his better judgment with hopes to reap something forbidden. Love.

Tales of a Grim
I am the dark force that both the living and dead fear. That is, until I come face to face with one who fears neither life nor death. Her presence alone tears me in two, breaks me down and builds me up. I have gambled all that I have just to keep her by my side, but winning her heart is the only prize worth claiming.

Tales of a Reaper
I tear souls, reaping them to shreds like wheat in my own dark harvest. I have no need of charity or the pity of grace. But there’s something in her shimmering gaze, enchanting me to places my vagrant soul cannot comprehend. Touching her is forbidden, punishable by the truest death, but I care not. I’d die a thousand deaths just to hold the one who now holds my heart.

Vengeance Born: A Grim & Reaper Netherworld Tale is a two-act novella filled with dark fantasy, broody, ruggedly handsome mythical men, strong love interests. Both tales are steamy, dark, no cheating, with touches of mafia and barbarian-ish charm. Readers of the Fire duet, Fire Kissed & Fire Born will be happy to see Grim & Reaper again, while newbies get to dive head-first in an interconnected, yet standalone book.

Then one day it hit me. It was time to access my own creative power and bring to life the characters lurking in my mind.

I hope you enjoy my first book, Beautiful Nightmare. It has everything you'd look to find in a paranormal romance-urban fantasy-new age novel. Vampires. Wolves. Love. And so much more!

Unique and interesting. This book was actually about two different couples. Thelios and Sydney and Pella and Roark. The first have was about one couple and then the other half was about the latter couple and in the end we got both couples.

Let’s start with Thelios and Sydney. It was fast-paced and pulled me in from the start. I loved Sydney and how strong she was willing to do anything to protect those she loved. Their relationship was a whirlwind romance full of plenty of steam!

Roark and Pella were cute. I enjoyed how Pella was able to hold her own as well and gave as good as she got in terms of well everything!

Both couple were enjoyable to read and I did enjoy the concept of the whole over all story.
The story was a lighter read with loads of steam and alpha possessive and protective men. There were bits of action and suspense sprinkled throughout as well.

Tropes:

- Strong woman
- Deadly characters
- Unique world and powers
- Steamy
- Two stories in one
- Scythe to the throat
- Shadow play
- Snake familiars
- Possessive Protective Deadly MMCs
- ‘I’d raze the world for you’

Where do I even start with this book? It was not at all what I expected going in. We start off with Lorna Sydney & Thelios' (the Grim Lord) story. It's definitely a lust at first sight, whirlwind story. Syd is a strong, caring, will do whatever it takes to protect those she loves FMC. Thelios is the Grim Lord of Purgia going through the motions of fulfilling his duties until he sees Syd for the first time & is instantly taken with her. Their story is a rollercoaster with a definite twist that I didn't see coming & honestly had to put the book down & walk away for a while to process it. The next story we get is between Pella of Viridian & Roark the Reaper Lord. Pella is taken by Scullards & rescued by Roark. The tension is there between them & we get to see it grow & blossom as the hide away from the danger that pursues them. The end of the book we get to see the culmination of both couples & yes it is a happy ending. My first read from this author & I will for sure be reading more.

I truly enjoyed how these were two different tales that connect at the end to see how it all plays out. The cliffhanger of Grim’s book left me clinging for more! But the end made up for it. I’m a grim girl but I loved how the Reaper and Grim would do anything for the women they love.

From the banter, the drama, and spice. This was a fun roller coaster to ride!🔥

What a roller coaster of emotions! This book was brilliant in its execution in the Netherworld, which consists of the city of Purgia, the Grim Lord and his mirth of nothing and his exceptions, and the Reaper Lord and his harem and those he sends to Hades. You also meet the Prince of Purgia and his Sprite Pella, who is his ward. In this tale of two halves of the Netherworld you experience both stories of the Grim and the Reaper lords as they navigate feelings for forbidden fruit. Each one wanting another they cant have or feel is out of their grasps. The Grim Lord, Thelios, a devilishly handsome bone daddy who comes across a specter and her sister seeking aid. Sydney will do anything to protect her sister from a horrible fate even give up her body. As things grow intense between them, secrets will reveal themselves with a devastating blow to the dark lords heart.
You also follow The Reaper Lord as he starts viewing Pella, the Prince of Purgia's ward, whose been deemed forbidden to touch, as much more than the little insect he had thought her to be. As Roark, the reaper decides he will do anything to be with her and protect her, they embrace each other in a forbidden size changing event of passion. With the Prince of Purgia away looking for his sister, they will play, but when he come home, what will happen between the two love birds? Will their forbidden love triumph over all or will they be each others downfall? With snake familiars, scythes, and lactating arousal this captivating story will have you thrumming through the pages!
What to expect...
Grief, magic, spice, death, abuse, gore, strong fmc's, dark fantasy, barbarian mythological, size difference, necro romance, forbidden love, lactating, fae, banter, angst, touch her and die, mine, good girl, virgin, kill for her, dom, jealousy, LGBTQ friendly, tension, hand necklace, betrayal, and more!

What an unexpected surprise! I got this book over a month ago to review and I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it or not so I kept putting off starting it. I really wish I hadn’t because I really enjoyed it.
The way this book was written is quite different to the style and language normally used in the romance genre (well the books I read anyway). I loved the fact the language used in this book was of a higher level, it felt a little more intellectually challenging than what I’m used to but at the same time was still an easy read. It was such a delicate balance and I think the author managed it flawlessly.
The story follows two MMCs on their journey to love. The first MMC we meet is Grim who is bewitched by the girl who begs him for a favour. While it’s pretty much insta-love, with the way this book is written it doesn’t feel fast at all. The depth of feeling comes across on the page. The second MMC we meet is Grim’s friend, Reaper. He’s the absolute epitome of giant cinnamon roll! Big and muscular and death himself, totally undone by a tiny pixie. Again, although it was insta-love, it didn’t feel rushed.
When I was about 3/4 of the way through, I wasn’t sure how the author was going to tie up all of the loose ends in the last 25% of the book and I was wishing for each character to have their own story; however, the author really took the time to round out both stories so neither couple felt shortchanged.
I really enjoyed this author’s work and will definitely pick up more of their work in the future. I’m 100% a convert!

I read this book after reading LC Son's other Netherworld-related novels. I highly recommend doing so as this reads like a sequel (though it works as a stand alone, there will be parts you're left questioning because the back story or additional explanations were divulged in a different novel). I first read "One Winter's Kiss", followed by "Fire Kissed", then "Fire Born" finishing with "Vengeance Born" (I do hope there will be others!).

I honestly cannot choose between Thelios and Roark. They are both so yummy! And the gals, Syd and Pella, aren't damsels in distress or push-overs. They know what they want, and they go about getting it! We've got a bit of everything in this novel: lots of witty banter that had me laughing out loud, insta love at first sight, spicy love making (this book should be considered 18+ as parts are very explicite and the spice drops often!!), tender shared moments, dark secrets, true villains, a shadow daddy... There should be something for everyone.

I really liked the 2-act set-up, with each act following a different couple, and this was the first time I've read a book laid out like that. And we could actually call it a 3-act story as the final and third part of the story pulls everyone back together. Vengeance Born could even be tandem-read with Fire Born as the events take place at the same time and certain parts overlap (but don't fret, there is next to zero repeated scenes - you're getting a whole new story here).

To sum it up, I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a "lighthearted dark romance", if that makes any sense to you!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I really liked the back cover and saw a lot of potential in this book. The characters in this book were interesting and could possibly keep my attention if it was just one love story. Such as if one book was made for Grim and Sidney, another book for just Reaper and Pella. But I felt like I was severally lacking in back story in both stories as they were mashed together. I felt like I was lost in most of the book plot and had no clue what was really going on in most of the book. There were some cringe wording in the book especially when the two male characters were describing their parts and women's body. Something that I would not hear from any males around me at all. But this book has so much hope, there's a story line for both parts of this book but I felt like they both needed more depth to the story. As it is it feels rushed and with fantasy type of books it's not always a good thing for fantasy to be rushed. Readers need to be able to picture the scene and know the background to understand what is happening. How can Grim and Sidney and Reaper and Pella fall in love in this dark place. That being said I really enjoyed some of the action scenes in this book. Also enjoyed being able to see everyone thoughts. I also enjoyed some of the smut scenes. I recommend checking this book out for your self. It may just be a book that wasn't the style that I like but it might be yours.

✨️ ARC REVIEW✨️

Spice: 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶

First, I would like to say that I pre-ordered this book way back when!! I was so excited to read this that I signed up for an ARC copy because I couldn't wait until Feb 14th! Lol!

My friends. IT👏🏾DID👏🏾NOT👏🏾DISAPPOINT!

The love, the drama, the spice ( Closet IYKYK -GRIM LORD😤), the unique and amazing creatures in this wonderful world of Purgia I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT😍 I seriously can't get enough of the Netherworld!! Like I need to know, will there be more books in this world? Because it is that good!

So, there are two relationships going on in this book.
You have the Grim and Lorna Sydney, and then you have Reaper and Pella.

I really don't know whose relationship I love more. Both relationships are forbidden, complicated, alluring, all the above.

I would say Grim and Lorna Sydney was a little tear jerking towards the end, and I was like OH NO😳 but then something good happens! ( no spoilers)

The events in this book take place before the events of Fire Born and then catch up to it ( which I enjoyed that)

I love that we got to learn more about Kharon's court and their developing relationships.

I loved Lorna Sydney and Pella omgsh especially Pella she is so fierce and feisty!! Both ladies were amazing 👏🏾

My only complaint is that it ended
(Mind you, it was over 400 pages, lol)
That should tell you something, lol.
I HIGHLY recommend this book!! & author!!

⭐️Thank you so much to the author for my ARC copy of this wonderful book, in exchange for an honest review⭐️

I love a great story and this one was it y’all! It starts out with us meeting Thelios in the Netherworld and I love as a reader to read about anything regarding Hades and the Netherworld or Underworld and this book is my jam!

The author definitely knows how to write an engaging story for her readers and I was engrossed from chapter 1 to the end! Lorna is a wraith like soul and she needs the Grim’s help, aka Thelios’ help. She doesn’t want her sister to be captured by the other lord who would do bad things to her.

I loved the chemistry between Lorna and Thelios in this book. It was well written by the author. The characters are also well written and, in a way, completely relatable. Thelios is enraptured by Lorna in the beginning and then she tells him what is happening in his own area of control in the Netherworld.

I love the story as it really takes off in this book after the first few beginning chapters. You think that there is something going to happen with Theolis and Sydney, but then you are tricked by the author.

The one thing that is a bit confusing is that there are two stories in this book, one is between Sydney and Thelios. The other is between Reaper and Pella’s story, and this gets a little confusing and I thought that the author could have maybe split the books into two separate stories, I feel that would have been a bit better.

Vengeance Born takes you into the Neatherworld where Grim and Reaper reside. Both men rule Purgia, but when it comes to love, they are not resistant. Grim finds love when he meets a woman who isn't afraid to die to protect the one person she loves the most. But is Grim handle what it the truth she's hiding. Reaper finds love when he meets a woman he's forbidden to love, but it doesn't matter. He would give anything to have her.

In Vengeance Born, we get the stories of Grim and Sydney and Reaper and Pella. They are two different stories that seamlessly flow together into one book. In both stories, Sydney and Pella are in need of rescuing, and Grim and Reaper help the women and end up falling for them. Grim and Sydney have a push/pull relationship at first that ends up turning into a fast, hot love affair. Reaper and Pella have a forbidden relationship that's hot but also sweet. I found myself enjoying Reaper and Pella's story better than Grim and Sydney's. Their story and character development was better than Grim and Sydney's. These two stories converge at the end to wrap up really nicely. This is a great, steamy novel for anyone looking for a trip to the underworld.

If you enjoyed The Fire Duet (Fire Kissed & Fire Born), then you will definitely enjoy Vengeance Born - two completely different stories, one phenomenal book, a WHOLE lotta spice!! Make sure you have some cold water handy! L.C. had me ready to get in MY OWN damn closet and wait for the Grim Lord to come ruin me! 🥵🌶️ But I digress lol... You'll be introduced to new characters, while learning more about the ones you've already come to know and love.
L.C. always creates such beautifully vivid fantasy worlds. (And having ANY of her brooding sexy men as book boyfriends HAS to be better than what's happening here) Her writing is easy and the stories are engaging. I always start out nervous because her books tend to be longer than my usuals, but if this one was, it definitely didn't feel like it, because I blew right through it. Now I sit here and await the next one *stares at watch*

This book really deserves a 2.5 Stars. To be honest, I felt that the story was a bit rushed in places and it could of used better world building. It was hard to follow at times, although it kept my attention most of the way through. If laid out better, this would make a good series of books. My favorite thing throughout the whole book was the relationship between the Reaper and the Pixie. I could of read a whole book just on those two alone. I don't want to spoil anything, so I won't go into too much detail on them. Like I said before, I wanted a bit more world building. I want to know more of the Netherworld and the people in it. I know its about the smut in most of these books, but what's wrong with both. Lastly, there were several grammatical errors, which drives me crazy. I don't know if it was my epub that messed it up but it still drove me crazy(i.e. just the letter t for the) It was only like this the first 5-6 chapters luckily.

It’s more like a tale, written in that way when we read a book about magic in far, far away land…

The story has 2 points of views, his and hers that I usually love. But I found it supper hard to visualise the characters, how they looked, where they lived and what kind of creatures they were, as there is no humans involved. That would be no problem as I like demons and fae and death and pixies… but I just couldn’t get the “picture” what exactly they were and what was their world. Grim and Reaper and Pixie themselves was easier to understand but the rest not so much.

It’s an interesting tale about Netherworld and 2 of it’s most gloomiest lords. And it’s great they find love, but it was too short for me to grasp everything.

📚 Vengeance Born by L.C. Son

I loved this book! It really felt like two books in one!

Lovably dark/grumpy MMCs and sunshine FMCs (some shining brighter than others!) lead to a couple of delicious touch-her-and-💀 relationships. Possessive men and strong women are quite the combo.

We definitely get more than just the romantic relationships, though! This book is full of lore, with a dynamic plot that keeps readers turning page after page. There was never a dull moment! I really enjoyed the world building. Gaining an understanding of the dynamic between the roles of grim, reaper, and ferryman was fun and unique, for someone who reads a lot of fresh takes on ancient lore. No spoilers here, but I absolutely loved the ending where the tales of grim and reaper come back together.

Really well written, I highly recommend this one to anyone looking for something new!

BLEW MY SOCKS OFF 💥💥 If I could add a stamp on my passport to the Netherworld I would be on the FIRST thing smoking! This book brought all the heat and then some. The plot was simple, yet engaging.

Two damsels in distress ✔️
Two dark lords ready & willing to help ✔️✔️

I would gladly trade places with either Sydney or Pella because both Grim and Reap were smoking 🥵🔥

For real, there were some heart wrenching moments that made me want to throw my kindle across the room, but the author made it all worth it in the end.

My favorite scene was Pella finding her power. Hell, I’d find my power too if I had gotten my back blown out by Reaper!

I’m so glad I’m on this ARC team because I can’t wait to read these books.

This one gets all the stars! ⭐️

I found the characters in this book interesting, but would have preferred that Grim and Sidney’s story was separate from Reaper and Pella’s. I became a little confused with what I felt was an interruption of Grim and Sidney’s story, placing Reaper and Pella’s story in the middle when coming to a very interesting part of Grim and Sidney’s story. This disrupted the flow for me like the scratch in a broken record. Despite this, I did enjoy reading these stories. I recommend checking out this book if you like dark fantasy stories of the underworld.

I received an advance reader copy of this book from the author via BookSirens. This review is purely from my perspective, and all opinions are my own. I am under no obligation to review the book.

Vengeance Born is two stories in one book: Grim and Sydney, Reaper and Pella. I thought I wouldn't like the fact there were two stories but no, it's rather nice to be able to read something different even if I was a little confused at one point (towards the end). The good thing is that it's possible to read Vengeance Born even if you haven't read anything else by the author, things are explained enough to understand a large part of the universe. With Vengeance Born, we are back in the Netherworld where we meet new characters. I had a little trouble really liking Sydney but Pella is definitely a character that I liked. As for Grim and Reaper, I'm sure many readers will love these two characters, as well as the surprises and twists throughout the story.

Loved!!!!! The transition and development of the 2-intertwining tales was an adventure. This tale follows the stories of both the Grim and Reaper; lords and protecters of Purgia in the Netherworlds. Through the stories they face many battles as they go on a rollercoaster of emotions and forbidden feelings.

my favorite character is a sprite named Pella who just so happens to be the Ward of the Prince of Purgia. She is surrounded by mystery and seen as the forbidden fruit. Her sharp witted and feisty nature made for both an enchanting and fun addition to brighten up some of the more deadly and dark characters. The spice in this book DID NOT DISAPPOINT. every scene holding magic of its own while bringing forth some dark but delicious depravities.

Vengeance Born is a tale within a tale in these two intertwined stories of Dark Lords Thelios and Roark of the Netherworld who find more than they bargained for when Sydney and Pella enter into their dark and hollow lives, the gift of love.

I throughly enjoyed this erotic fantasy that was well written and centered within a perfectly detailed world that holds the reader in suspense and emotionally committed to its captivating narrative.

There will be surprises, intrigue, passion, steam, and some heart tugging moments along the way which in the end will prove to have been very worth the journey to the place where all lie in wait for their judgement!

Highly Recommended!

Set in the already established dark fantasy world of Netherworld comes Vengeance Born. Having not read anything by this author or set in this world it was great to explore something new and I felt that I wasn't missing anything whilst reading, that meant I didn't understand the setting or background. Grim and Reaper are both 🔥 as are Sydney and Pella. I'm definitely a Reaper girl 🥵 although I loved them all there was places where I wanted to smack Grim upside the head.
Intriguing plot combined with spicy spice, I'll definitely be reading more from this world.

This is the first book that I've read by this author and it's set in her Netherworld series. I found her writing easy to follow, the characters interesting and the world building clear. This is a duet and falls into the dark romance category but I absolutely loved it ;) There were surprises, twists, moments where a certain Grim needed a smack upside the head and steamy steam that worked together to have me madly flipping pages to see how things would unfold. Expect to also have your heart stop a few times with the odd gut wrenching moments but the author came through with a fab ending to make it all worth it ;P I'm definitely looking forward to more stories set in this world.

There was a lot of promise in this book, and I truly enjoyed the back cover. Should this novel consist solely of a single love tale, the characters were compelling enough to hold my interest. Like if a different book was written exclusively for Reaper and Pella and another for Grim and Sidney. However, because the two storylines were combined, I thought there was a significant gap in the backstory in each. For the most part, I felt as though I was clueless about the true events occurring in the novel and was lost in its narrative. The two male characters' descriptions of women's bodies and their parts contained some really offensive language.

Vengeance Born is a duet and takes place in the Underworld, Purgia, and you follow two different couples and their stories. First you follow Thelios and Sydney. Thelios is the Grim Lord and is known for having a harem but when he locks eyes with Sydney he basically falls for her instantly. Sydney is a wraith who would give her body and soul to protect her little sister. Once being given to Thelios the two embark on an emotional roller coaster of longing and lusting.

The complications and pining between The Reaper and Pella. The turmoil and longing is *Chef’s Kiss*

This book is great you should definitely read it!!!!

2 stories in one book and both are fantastic! We're back in the Netherworld and are meeting some very interesting characters. The author does a great job telling Grim and Sydney and Reaper and Pella's stories. There are surprises and twists and storylines that will have you wanting more. The author is very descriptive, one of the things I love with her books, which makes you feel like you're there with them. There's some spice and some moments you just want to smack them. A definite must read and if you haven't read anything of hers before I good way to wet toes!

This one was interesting, full of action and love. This one tells 2 stories in one, thelios and Sydney and pella and Roark. I was quite invested in thelios and Sydney’s story and was left wondering what was to become of them when it switched over. Pella and Roark had an easier love story for sure besides the size difference. I liked how the women had ‘secrets’ about their identities that end up being revealed. I was glad when the two stories merged and we got to finally go back to thelios and Sydney.

Going into this book I thought it was another underworld telling. It was not in the way I thought. It takes place in he netherworld, with Grim and Reaper being the main characters other than the women they fall for and vise versa. It is compelling with decent world building. There is a push/pull and forbidden love that develops between the characters. Recommend reading and look forward to other books by this author.

The first part of this book was 🥵🥵🥵.

The 🥛 and 🐍... 🥵🥵🥵🥵

The build up 🥵🥵🥵

The plot twist mid book?! 😭😭😭

Then straight back into 🥵🥵🥵🥵

I'm glad this is book one because I need to know where my death trio will be getting up to next!

I totally missed the part where it said this was two stories in one, so it was a little jarring to switch mid book (my bad for always going in blind 😂)but when the stories connect it's totally worth it!

I didn’t exactly care for the Grim lord’s ending… or at least the ending to the first part of his story. It was, however made up for in the second part of his story!

This had the perfect amount of spice🥵 And of course I absolutely loved the underworld theme as well!!

I did receive and ARC copy of this book, and am giving my honest thoughts back

I loved getting to read more from this world and getting some new POVs. This story was action packed and didn’t stop. The first half is told from Thelios and Sydney’s and then we get a switch to Roark and Pella and then we get all 4 in the final leg. It kept the story moving along very nised. After regains Fire Kissed and Fire Born this was a welcome installment. I hope there are more stories to come from this world.

Vengeance Born is a dark fantasy romance set in two acts. This is a Grim and Reaper Netherworld Tale that some readers may be familiar with! I had the pleasure of reading this book and these characters for the first time and seeing why they are loved. This is standalone book that will take readers on a great adventure and even spicier romance. I enjoyed this one and the author's talent for creating a great read. The Grim Lord is definitely a favorite.
