Teddy

Rate this book
Five children discover a mysterious staircase in the woods and set in motion a series of events that will haunt not only themselves, but the rest of humanity forever. Years later, after spending the majority of their adolescent lives behind bars, the broken adults have been trying and failing to live normal lives.

Poisoned by the events of the past, Daniel Temms feels he owes long-lost friend Francie Dublos when she reaches out to him for help. Her brother has been viciously injured in what, at first, appears to be a particularly violent and unconventional suicide attempt.

As another familiar face expires in a suspiciously similar fashion, Daniel and Francie are forced to face their dormant traumas and enter a horrific world of bountiful brutality.

A fresh nightmare from the creator of Incel, Burden, and Thaumaturgist, TEDDY explores themes of grief, revenge, and sacrifice.

3.5 stars. This genuinely had some really unsettling and creepy visuals. Great detail and solid use of the author’s imagination, especially in the latter half of the story. The premise was pretty straightforward, but it consistently seemed to get lost amongst all the horrific instances in this alternate dimension that the deceased, Teddy, brought his friends into. And, by the time the finale happened, I was fairly fatigued from the prolonged process of the old friends finally seeing the ultimate terror, in Teddy. And there was no explanation as to what this other world was exactly, or how Teddy was brought back and able to go between worlds. And I was even a bit confused as to how the friends accidentally killed Teddy, too. I went back and reread it, but it wasn’t clear if it was intentional or accidental. Needless to say, it was a solid read overall, but had quite a bit of similar instances where it sacrificed quality for spectacle. The author really needed to focus more on developing the core plot and not trying to force the scares so much.

This wasn't the greatest of reads for me, it started off pretty good with a storyline that
started to grip me...then it turned into some weird way out freaky stuff that became rather confusing, silly and stupid.
It left me with so many unanswered questions...
How did the staircase get into the woods?
Who put the staircase there?
For what reason was the staircase there?
What was the weird world you ended up in if you were stupid enough to jump off the top of the staircase? (Or be thrown off)
How was Teddy able to come and go back and forth so easily between the two dimensions, when others struggled and failed to?
Maybe I missed something important here...but I was unable to see much of anything worth reading...it made me want to wrap myself in barbed wire and crawl into a sack...and I haven't got a bloody clue why!!! 🤣 🤔

Only 3 🧸🧸🧸⭐⭐⭐'s and those are for the cover art.

Well blow me down and string me up with barbed wire (that's a saying, right? 😂) if this isn't an incredibly brutal, chilling masterpiece of a story from Matt! Unputdownable and utterly captivating, each new Duchossoy becomes my new fave, and this is no exception!! Outstanding!! 🖤

This story gave me really strong King vibes right from the beginning, an eerie, chilling atmospheric coming of age tale, set on multiple planes of existence! Then, it went in a direction I wasnt expecting, and ultimately, loved!!

Teddy is 9 years old and hanging out with the big kids. Although they would normally rather leave him at home, this time they encourage him to come along with them, they're looking for the staircase, and are pretty sure he will be of great use when they find it. Said staircase is legend, but only a few people have ever found it. It sits solitary, in the middle of nowhere, and seemingly leading to nowhere, and is ripe for exploration by the curious group of youngsters. But, this is a practical joke gone too far, and it has the direst of consequences for the group….

30 years later and Daniel is still plagued with guilt, sadness and despair at Teddy's disappearance. That and his subsequent incarceration for his part in it, leaving him with a profound hatred for life and on the verge of suicide. And after receiving an email from an old friend, it seems hes not alone. Each of the friends that were present on that fateful day are still dealing with the events, each in their own seperate ways, is it time to get together again and try to solve the mystery of Teddy's disappearance?

Despite his suicidal thoughts, Daniel now feels he has something to live for, to find out exactly what is going on right now, whos savagely murdering his friends, and to put Teddy to rest, once and for all! Theres only one way he feels he can do that though, and hes willing to risk everything to find out..

Meanwhile, Harry, a youtuber who revels in horror and murder mysteries, gets a tip off and he cant turn down the opportunity. He follows Daniel and Francie through the magic tunnel and into a whole other situation. Harry will do anything for his moment of fame, including following the two friends right off the end of the staircase, filming the whole time. His live streams however, attract more attention than he could ever have hoped for, which in turn, has a disastrous and horrific knock on effect on the other side of the staircase. And when Daniel and Francie become seperated, it becomes a terrifying mission and a race against time and abominations, to find each other, and ultimately, Teddy!

This story was utterly haunting, utterly gripping, extremely dark, unsettling and BRUTAL!! With some heart-stopping, breath-holding, insane moments that will set your teeth on edge and haunt your very soul. Matt's bizarro skills when mixed with his horror make for an incredibly disturbing biz/horror mash up that has become one of my favourite things to read. Think Clive Barker, King, and even Final Destination. I love how Matt draws you in, teases you along, and then smacks you right in the face with the twisted, fucked-up, nightmarish, fever dream visions of his brilliantly bonkers imagination.

Great world building and utterly chilling experiences for all the senses, hellish landscapes, horrifying abominations, sounds and smells that will haunt you for eternity, and so many devastatingly savage kills. The story builds in intensity, sheer terror, and mind melting images, continuously until the mind blowing conclusion.

The cenobite like, human/metal hybrids have etched themselves into my minds eye, and await me in my nightmares!
This book is kinda like my review photo props all got together and took their nasty revenge!! 😂 And its now living rent free in my head!!

Absolutely incredible stuff, I love each new book by Matt as they just get better and better, and this is my new fave!! Until the next one…… 🖤

Kids will be kids! Always messing with things they shouldn’t, one particular day in the woods Teddy and his friends came to regret their messing. This was a great, coming of age, revenge, parallel universe kinda read.

The imagery is insane. Legit nightmare fuel, but the sexual parts were so unnecessary. Like I can stomach a lot, but the scenes with the horror edgelord, made me gag and left me saying yeah a guy def wrote this lol

The cover art is amazing though.

This is the 4th book I have read by Matt under his Duchossoy pseudonym. I have immensely enjoyed all 4. This one was wild. What starts as a fairly ordinary tale erupts into madness as we enter an entirely bizarro world. It's no secret that I am a huge fan of bizarro and i have enjoyed Matt's other works in the sub genre. There is no end to the blood, horror and madness in this one. Check it out.

What started as creepypasta-inspired horror was soon taken over by Duchossoy's bizarre storytelling. It's a great combination of both things he does best.
And it shows. It was a fucking weird-ass, wild ride.

(Even though I am incredibly excited Duchossoy felt inspired by my tipping him off to capture the utter bizarre phenomenon of creepy fucking staircases in the woods - this review is completely honest.)

Five kids discover a weird staircase in the middle of the woods that goes up and just ends in mid-air. Gregg and Jakob can't help but bully young Teddy, and their callousness brings to life a vendetta that the world is not prepared for.

First of all, can we take a sec and talk about that cover?! What a creepy looking kid! I'm going to need a physical copy of this to stare at me from my bookshelf and horrify me when I catch it in the corner of my eye. That being said, thanks, Matt, for the early look at this!

Teddy gave me mad The Evil Within vibes. I was reading the descriptions of the barbed wire and the abominations and could easily picture them based on character models for The Evil Within. As one of my favourite horror games out there, I was really excited to be able to connect that here! It helped me get a clear picture of what the characters were seeing, as graphic and horrifying as that picture was.

This got real chaotic in the last half of the book, but I suspended my belief in reality and went along for the ride. This proved to be the way to go as I was able to completely immerse into the story and not get bogged down trying to figure out all the minutiae of exactly what was happening. This was such a fun and gore-filled read, and Matt truly is the master of the visceral.

Every book I've read of his seems to take a step further than the last, and I can only be excited for what that means as a reader and fan of Matt's work!

This starts off with a few kids messing about in the woods and you can just tell something awful is on the horizon, like the first ten minutes of casualty when the kid is using the chip pan.
Matt’s description of any kind of monster or weird creature is something you can never get out of your head and the few pictures do not help.
Some of the creatures had a resident evil feel to them and this would make for a wondrously disturbing film.
This story gave me the most strange dreams and it’s been a while since my last one but the weirdness lingers.
I feel like I say it about each new book of his but it just gets better every time.
I cannot describe in fitting words how much I enjoyed this.
And I have to say Matt really has a thing against coils!

“Francie’s head ached. She needed to focus. If she didn’t focus, she’d never have the remainder of her life to live in abstract horror of the worlds beyond her own. The things she’d seen, things she’d done.”

The cover for this book is absolutely terrifying, and the pages within will horrify the reader as well.

A childhood mishap leads to Daniel leading a life of trauma and regret. When disturbing visions become reality, he and his old friends need to go back to the beginning. Where it all started… the staircase in the woods.

I wanted more details from this story - who created the staircase, what were Greg/Jakob/Francie’s lives after the incident with Teddy? It was so good, but at times I felt like I was getting the appetizer version instead of the entree!

For fans of Elias Witherow’s “The Black Farm”, check out “Teddy” ASAP!

This is my 4th book by Matt Duchossoy and i loved them all (Incel being a firm favourite for the topic alone), but in this one he has taken things to the next level in a way I never expected.

Matt is brilliant at bringing flawed characters to life. His prose is outstanding, and the story of Teddy is an incredible feverish nightmare-scape that is absolutely bursting at the seams with depravity, repulsive creatures and insane ideas that I can't even conceive.

I have a yearning for discordant other realms since i read The Hollow places by T Kingfisher, and Teddy just replaced the whole proverbial ballpark there.

You would be absolutely daft to miss this one!! One of the best books i read this year.

“Five children discover a mysterious staircase in the woods and set in motion a series of events that will haunt not only themselves, but the rest of humanity forever.”
This was my first introduction to Mr Duchossoy’s work and wow was I impressed.
TEDDY is a quick read, heavy on the grief and revenge plot but after about the half way mark it turns into something that I wasn’t expecting and absolutely loved it. The writing was excellent, the story was bizarre (in a good way) and that cover!!!

Thank you to the author for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

A glorious nightmare inducing masterpiece by Matt Duchossoy!

Where death, destruction, depravity and dimension crossing combines, this is a high octane read from start to finish.

The imagery is horrifying; the prose outstanding and the flawed characters utterly captivating. This will stay with you a long time after reading!

Strongest possible recommendation!

I received an ARC from the author. This is my honest review.

Cover of Teddy by Matt Duchossoy depicts a body encased in a burlap sack, secured by barbed wire. A single blood red eye is visible through a small whole in the sack.

Teddy – by Matt Duchussoy

A group of neighborhood friends find a mysterious staircase to nowhere in the woods. One of them, little boy named Teddy, goes missing. His friends and sibling are haunted by it for 30yrs…then Teddy comes back, and he’s mad. The mental imagery of the characters, the settings/scenery, the creatures, the revenge, the barbed freaking wire…wow!! It all stayed with me and now haunts me! What a wild read!
Matt Duchussoy…you, sir, have done it again! Another fantastically awesome story from that brilliant mind of yours! I loved it, and recommend it immensely (even if I do have nightmares about Teddy and barbed wire now)! 5⭐️!!

I really enjoyed this book, It was super creepy with some very dark and disturbing scenery. The story itself was incredibly sad at its core with a lot of gore and violence. It's about a group of kids who take to bullying the youngest, which results in a terrible life for all involved. I loved the other world that was created within this book, and it seemed like a truly horrifying place. My one drawback is that while we did get a slight glance into teddy's back story it was only a glance and I would have loved a bit more of an explanation of how teddy became what he did.

So let's talk about Teddy by Matt Duchossoy even though you have to wait til the 13th for a copy.

First I posted the dedication with ZERO context. I was excited a book was dedicated to me. I accidentally gave Matt the BEST ad campaign ever because everyone I knew thought I was dead or missing. Oops. I'm talking within 15 seconds of posting I got over 30 calls, texts, and messages of friends PANICKING. I immediately had to make another post explaining that I'm very much alive and fine but I got a book dedicated to me. I was grounded a lot that day.

This is what I posted 5 days later after tearing through the book, I'm still in trouble by the way.

Remember how you all thought I was dead or missing over a book? There's more to that book.

Let me introduce you to Teddy.

Five children discover a mysterious staircase in the woods and set in motion a series of events that will haunt not only themselves, but the rest of humanity forever. Years later, after spending the majority of their adolescent lives behind bars, the broken adults have been trying and failing to live normal lives. (Part of Matt's blurb)

Teddy is a fictional 9 year old I was introduced to months ago via a planned cover. Matt told me the very bare basics for his idea of this story. I fell in love.

Over the last 6 months Matt and I have become good friends despite living across the world from one another. I still don't know what I did to deserve it but he warned me this book would be dedicated to me. Which is still so freaking cool.

I devoured this book in roughly 24 hours. This is easily Matt's best work and I've read just about everything he's put out now. I don't say this because the book was dedicated to me. This story is dark and had me hooked in a matter of a few pages. The story gave me anxiety, and I believe everyone who reads it will have some type of self reflection. If you've ever had regrets, if you've ever been bullied or been a bully, if it just took one person to keep you going. This story will hit on something you relate to. Which is wild to me, how just some words on a page can hit differently but deeply for many. It also made me sad. But I'm not sure why, the parts that specifically made me sad also had me so anxious I think I quit breathing a few times wondering if they'd succeed or not.

Teddy is an extreme horror book, if this isn't your style please don't feel obligated to purchase it. It's a hard read. It's violent. It's gruesome. It's heartbreaking. And it'll manage to give you more anxiety than I did.

Thanks Matt for making this a special book for me and for just being you, you're pretty cool I suppose.

My high school art teacher now needs a signed copy. My mom wants a copy **she's not allowed to actually read it ever**. And so many friends have asked when physicals will be available. I may have scared the hell out of everyone but I definitely sold the story 😂😂.

This book will forever be in one of my top slots. Not because it's "mine" but because it's THAT good. This one will stick with you forever.

3.5 stars rounded up. I've read a few of this author's other works and have loved them. TEDDY started off strong with an exceptional premise.

Five kids discover an odd staircase in the middle of the woods that goes up as far as the eye can see. Gregg and Jakob can't stand young Teddy, and their ruthless act of violence will give birth to something so monstrous, so heinous, that it will make everyone who was present that day a target.

After spending most of their early and late teens behind bars, these broken adults are trying to find their way into a world that no longer feels familiar. When one of the people present that day attempts suicide in a horrifically unconventional fashion, it's clear that the events of that terrible day so long ago aren't over.

I did get bogged down a little in the middle as it seemed like the descriptions went on a little too long, and the ending was a little abrupt for my taste. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to horror fans.

From page one to done, Teddy is of the same cloth that night terrors are made. The author, Matt Duchossoy is Epiales, the spirit and personification of nightmares and his pen is his pale horse - so, readers beware! When you step up to the mysterious stairs in the clearing, they won't take you to Narnia. Instead, think of Clive Barker, or the images that might appear in your mind when you listen to bands like Skinny Puppy or Leaether Strip - and prepare to enter a hellscape from which you (the reader) may never escape.

Note: Teddy is available on Amazon for free with Kindle Unlimited.

A group of kids find a mysterious staircase that leads to nowhere. One of them disappears and the rest of them spend their lives making up for it.
This book isn't what I thought it would be. The first half was intriguing enough but then we become lost in a dark fantastical nightmare world. Like something conjured from the mind of Clive Barker. Bucket loads of body horror ensues. Not really my cup of tea but if you're a fan of Barker's nightmare worlds and extreme body horror then you'll probably enjoy this.

This storyline was gripping me from the beginning. Had all of the elements I look for in a book..creepy, s*x with dead people (don't judge me), alternate worlds.

At one point there was so much going on in the story I felt like I was out of breath.

The ending was either the Author running out of ideas or a cliff hanger for a sequel.

I'm hoping sequel.

This book is good, and I mean really good! I read most of it in one sitting. It’s brutal, violent, and 100% original. Also, seeing that Matt started his writing career in bizarro fiction, things get weird, like real weird. Go read it now!

This felt a bit all over the place and could have been super good if the character building was stronger. Lots of concepts in one amalgamation. I didn't DNF though. So I wad invested enough. I just feel like this Author has more talent than what I saw in this book.

Vivid description and the pathetic nature of sheep mentality are the stars in this crazy tale. Revenge, atonement and magic take old friends into another space to find answers they've been missing since childhood.
This gets really crazy and graphic so be warned!
