OMG! The most frightening 1st chapter I’ve ever read!
A quick reminder of how dark Helen Fields' thrillers are.🫣
Midnight works with a highly successful biotech company (of sorts). She analyzes applications to determine a person's fit in a particular field or educational environment.
But when she comes across one applicant it triggers the system. There must be a mistake! Nope… this applicant is so off the charts there is no way to classify him other than by Profile K. A one-of-a-kind profile the company never expected to use.
Prepare for one of the scariest, most evil serial killers you’ll ever come across.
It’s up to Midnight (who has a twin sister Dawn - don’t you love that?) to bring down this killer before he strikes again.
We have a cameo from Dr. Connie Woolwine, a world renowned profiler, who has been in Helen Fields’ previous books. I love her character and have a feeling we’ll be seeing much more of her in the future!
This was a fabulous, suspenseful and gripping read classified as a stand-alone but does have a recurring character. No worries if you’ve missed her previous books, but Dr. Connie Woolwine’s character is worth the trip through Helen Fields’ backlog of books.

Dear Helen Fields, you are a badass! What I thought was going to be your typical serial killer storyline was something much more complex! I now want gobble up everything you’ve written. Bravo. 👏 👏
Midnight Jones, cool ass name btw, works for a biotech company reviewing profiles. One day she gets an alert telling her the test someone took profiles them as Profile K. Confused, Midnight is dying to know what exactly Profile K means. The test the subject took was quite disturbing. Midnight goes through the video and test herself. Holy hell. What human could actually watch something so horrifying and not be affected? Definitely not someone normal. It was torture just to watch.
The next day at work, she learns a woman has been brutally murdered in her neighborhood. Somehow she thinks there might be a link. As she starts to investigate on her own, more disturbing details and more crime emerges.
Excellent character development! Yes, Midnight was making some risky choices, but I was still rooting for her character the whole time. She was someone I admired for her integrity and her empathy towards others. In fact, it would be awesome if the author gave us more Midnight and turned this into a series!

Midnight Jones works for a biotech company in London England creating profiles based on applications received by various companies and educational institutes. One day the application she's reviewing comes up as a Profile K which she's never come across before. To confirm the results, she takes the same test herself and for her it was torture just to watch the accompanying videos but apparently not for the applicant.
If you're at all familiar with Helen Fields' work, you know she doesn't shy away from the depiction of death and injury and this book is a prime example. Beware if you're at all squeamish!
Even though she's been told by her employer to drop it, we follow Midnight as she investigates the unusual test results and their connection to gruesome murders in the area. Her story is interspersed with chapters written by "The Applicant" and we learn of his background. Dr. Connie Woolwine whom we met in The Shadow Man and The Institution also makes an appearance, albeit via Zoom, and helps Midnight in her efforts to track down the serial killer. Her devotion to her disabled twin sister is so heartwarming and I think we all need a Doris in our lives. The book contains many other interesting secondary characters as well, some good and some bad.
I had been going to comment that one thing I liked was how Midnight is portrayed as cautious as well as smart and that it was a relief not to have to yell at her to not do something stupid. Then, at about 85%, she did something really stupid so I take that back. Then again, it was pretty important to the rest of the story so I'll let it go this time. Still a 5-star read for me.
This wasn't a "can't put it down" read for me but it was totally different and I really liked it. In fact, sometimes I had to put it down so that I'd be able to sleep. I can't wait to see what Ms Fields comes up with next! I think a new series starring Midnight Jones and Dr. Connie Woolwine would be a huge success.

I've become a devoted fan of Helen Fields' work since I discovered and devoured the DI Callanach series and her stand-alone books. I eagerly anticipated reading Profile K, which did not disappoint! It is a Masterpiece.!!! This compulsively dark and taut novel delivers with its horrificly violent and disturbing murders, presenting a gripping and dark narrative. The Killer is depicted as genuinely depraved and unsettling, making this book a spine-chilling read— unsuitable for the faint-hearted. From the opening chapter to the final page, it's a fast-paced and intense novel that kept me immersed from the beginning until the end, and It had me squirming on the edge of my seat and my heart racing.
Helen Fields shines through in her character development, which is a hallmark of her writing. The characters are fully developed, flawed, likeable and distinct, quickly drawing me into their lives. Fields has a talent for creating realistic and compelling characters, making them relatable and with whom readers can empathize.
In addition to the riveting corporate corruption and murder scenes, the narrative delves into Midnight Jones' relationship with her twin sister, Dawn, their absentee parents, and her unconditional love for her sister, regardless of the demanding responsibility she has had for most of her life. The emotional depth adds a poignant layer to the narrative, making it difficult not to be affected by their difficult circumstances. Doris, who brings much-needed light relief, becomes a beacon of hope when she befriends Jones and Dawn. Her presence adds a touch of warmth to the story, balancing the darker elements.
One of the strengths of Fields' character development is evident in Jones, the heroine. While some heroines' decisions may seem impractical and questionable in some thrillers, Jones' motivations are clear and validated. Fields' detailed character development allowed me to empathize with Jones and understand her deep concern and decision to become deeply involved in solving the serial killings in her community, even at the risk of her safety and others.
The portrayal of the technology company Necto is so vivid it almost feels like a character in itself. This depiction adds a layer of complexity to the story, highlighting corporate entities' impact on individuals and society. This aspect of the novel serves as a thought-provoking exploration of the implications of our increasingly tech-driven world. It reminds me of the consequences that powerful technological corporations can cause worldwide if they go unchecked. It is genuinely terrifying.
Overall, Profile K stands out as a brilliant thriller that offers a unique and gripping concept that sets it apart from other novels in the genre. Fields' skillful storytelling, compelling characters, and intricate plot development kept me fully invested and flipping the pages until 5:00 a.m. I highly recommend you read this book. Be forewarned you may wake up with a book hangover, which isn't a bad thing.

A horrifying attack on Chloe Martin in her home where she should feel safe is made worse somehow by the cheerful, fun message on her landline left by her sister and three-year-old niece as the incident takes place. Switch to Necto Corporation in London, a biotech company, specialising in the human brain, and Midnight Jones, who is a carer for her twin sister Dawn, who has severe special needs. Midnight’s job is to assess applicant profiles for, amongst other things, university places. When she gets a profile of data scores that has to be a system glitch or corrupt data, she does some deeper analysis and holy moly, what is revealed is terrifying. She certainly feels horror but not so the applicant known as profile K and I’m sure you can work out what the K stands for. Alarm bells are clanging at mega decibels for Midnight, so she does the right thing. As for ‘K’ the routine test has shown what they are potentially capable of and it doesn’t bode well. DI Jock Ruskin investigates but this will leave its mark.
Can I breathe now? Helen Fields is known for her tense thrillers, and this is the take a gulp kind, as she’s turned up the fear factor to the maximum notch in this chiller thriller. Here we not only have someone who is accelerating in the worst possible way but there are chills of an altogether different kind come from a big brother organisation. What kind of game are they playing?
Midnight Jones as a central protagonist is immensely likeable, not only is she honourable, but she’s selfless as she cares for Dawn and that family backstory makes you very cross on her behalf. Salvation appears in the form of septuagenarian Doris who is quite simply wonderful. We also get to meet Doctor Connie Woodwine again in a peripheral, but important role too. It’s worth checking out The Shadow Man and The Institution as both feature Connie and are excellent books.
My blood runs pretty cold at the start of this fast paced novel, but those chills soon freeze pretty solidly at more than one junction of the plot. There are twists, and then some, and an ever present feeling of fear overhangs the storytelling. There’s some horror as it’s not a pretty tale, it’s creative, original and some parts may seem far-fetched but they’re not beyond the awful realms of possibility. Do we really know what goes on behind the closed doors of powerful institutions? Who is the monster in this tale? I wholeheartedly approve of the optimistic ultimate ending after all the angst. Now some of the characters can breathe too.
Finally, anything Helen Fields writes I’m there, and I’ll jostle the queue with my elbows to get to the front!!

Firstly I would like to thank netgalley and Avon books and the great author Helen Fields for an early copy of her book to read.
It took me a while to get into this book, as found it to be busy with the tech jargon. Did enjoy the characters Midnight looks after her disabled sister and doesnt have much of a social life..she works for a tech company named Necto there are flaws she sees terrible things on her screen the bosses cover it up...is this company hiding something? And theres murders near by...my rating for this book is 3.5 rounded to four...still to read quite a few of her books on my kindle from her other series,I'm looking forward to reading more.
This book will be reviewed on goodreads and Amazon.

As soon as I heard about this book, I was dying to get my hands on it. A big thanks to Avon Books UK for the advanced copy to read.
This is one dark and scary serial killer novel. It's scary because it could just happen. It starts with a gruesome murder and does not let up. It is quite a graphic story, with lots of details, so be sure that you have a strong stomach. This is a very messed up killer.
Our main character, Midnight Jones, just will not give up. She knows that this man is out there and he is dangerous, and then the murders begin. They are awfully close to home, and she knows that he knows her name.
I loved the characters of Dawn and Doris. Such a sweet pair and their friendship was lovely, amongst all the darkness.
Once you get started, you won’t want to stop reading. Helen Fields has another winner here. Out on April 25th, you have to read it.

At the heart of this masterpiece lies Midnight Jones, an analyst whose world is turned upside down when she stumbles upon the chilling file of Profile K – a designation that spells out the presence of a killer among them. What unfolds is a tale of cat-and-mouse, as Midnight finds herself not only racing against time to stop Profile K from striking again, but also grappling with the terrifying realization that she has become the target.

PROFILE K [2024] By HELEN FIELDS
My Review 5.0 Stars
This standalone serial killer thriller from the mind of a million-copy best-selling author was just released this past April. I only mention that because some readers rely upon customer reviews to make book buying decisions. That should not be necessary here because Helen Fields has won global recognition for her dark crime fiction. I really enjoyed the debut novel for her DI Callanach series “Perfect Remains”, read the second book, and purchased the next two in the series. My “Unread Books Shelf” really needs a figurative dusting off and attention.
“Profile K” is the fifth standalone novel from novelist Helen Fields. I stumbled across this one and it sounded fascinating. The setting is the United Kingdom, and the female protagonist is an employee of the Necto Corporation, biotech specializing in the human brain. Necto’s products included the dated polygraph machines to psychogalvanometers that measured physical responses to emotional stimuli. Our heroine spent all day, every day “profiling”, and she was equipped with a first-class degree in social sciences with master's degrees in psychology and neuroscience.
Thames Environmental Sciences University [TESU] offered quite a menu of specialized fields of study, and they were conveniently in close proximity to Necto. TESU allowed testing before students had winnowed down their preferences to a particular pathway. The “heart” of the state-of-the-art profiling system that Necto deployed was the use of their psychogalvanometers which monitored all of the test subject’s vital signs, blood oxygen levels, pupil dilation, and brain activity. The subject would be seated comfortably with the monitoring equipment in place while he sat before a screen and watched videos play.
Empathy was one of the traits which was calculated by the AI-enhanced profiling system developed By Necto. In effect, the system was so intelligent that if a human test subject failed to react to a stimulus, then the computer generated a second stimuli more apt to evoke the desired response. I found such unnerving technology to be both brilliant and chilling. What would happen if an applicant did not respond at all to the increasingly horrific images? Our protagonist Midnight learned the answer to that question. Her boss laughed and told her that the guys called such an eventuality a “Profile K”, but it was a moot point because it was an impossible outcome.
I hope that this technical jargon did not bore anyone or trigger a “nap”. In order to understand how very different this serial killer thriller is from the usual fare flooding this sub-genre it was necessary to be brought into the loop right out of the gate.
This is the most original and imaginative novel about a serial killer that I have read for some time. The opening pages of this book:
“There is a moment for women – no more cacophonous than a petal falling from a dying flower – when good intentions have cost them their life, and they know it. (And the narrative continues to describe this “moment” of recognition as the killer enters the apartment and carries out his plans as the sand in the invisible timer runs out). I have never read a more chilling opening in any crime thriller.
The looming threat is unstoppable and heartless as “The Terminator” and the murders meticulously carried out to maximize suffering and cause slow blood loss. The reader feels the frustration and muted anger of Midnight the data analyst who knows that Count Dracula is walking around targeting new victims. She is powerless against the rich and powerful corporation, and the police are devoid of provable facts and suspects.
The author provides some needed backstory for the murderer, and the character development for Midnight and the other female protagonists is deftly applied to the narrative. I really liked this one from Fields. I was never bored, and I found the differences in “Profile K” and other titles of its ilk refreshing. There are of course the prerequisite plot twists which fill in puzzle pieces as opposed to landing like rocks needing an emergency dose of suspense of disbelief.
The climax to the storyline was frenetic and nerve wracking and the denouement was a heaping of rewarding warmth and harmony for the long-suffering heroine Midnight, her twin Dawn, and their newest addition Doris.

I really enjoyed the debut novel for her DI Callanach series “Perfect Remains”, read the second book, and purchased the next two in the series. My “Unread Books Shelf” really needs a figurative dusting off and attention.
“Profile K” is the fifth standalone novel from novelist Helen Fields. I stumbled across this one and it sounded fascinating. The setting is the United Kingdom, and the female protagonist is an employee of the Necto Corporation, biotech specializing in the human brain. Necto’s products included the dated polygraph machines to psychogalvanometers that measured physical responses to emotional stimuli. Our heroine spent all day, every day “profiling”, and she was equipped with a first-class degree in social sciences with master's degrees in psychology and neuroscience.
Thames Environmental Sciences University [TESU] offered quite a menu of specialized fields of study, and they were conveniently in close proximity to Necto. TESU allowed testing before students had winnowed down their preferences to a particular pathway. The “heart” of the state-of-the-art profiling system that Necto deployed was the use of their psychogalvanometers which monitored all of the test subject’s vital signs, blood oxygen levels, pupil dilation, and brain activity. The subject would be seated comfortably with the monitoring equipment in place while he sat before a screen and watched videos play.
Empathy was one of the traits which was calculated by the AI-enhanced profiling system developed By Necto. In effect, the system was so intelligent that if a human test subject failed to react to a stimulus, then the computer generated a second stimuli more apt to evoke the desired response. I found such unnerving technology to be both brilliant and chilling. What would happen if an applicant did not respond at all to the increasingly horrific images? Our protagonist Midnight learned the answer to that question. Her boss laughed and told her that the guys called such an eventuality a “Profile K”, but it was a moot point because it was an impossible outcome.
I hope that this technical jargon did not bore anyone or trigger a “nap”. In order to understand how very different this serial killer thriller is from the usual fare flooding this sub-genre it was necessary to be brought into the loop right out of the gate.
This is the most original and imaginative novel about a serial killer that I have read for some time. The opening pages of this book:
“There is a moment for women – no more cacophonous than a petal falling from a dying flower – when good intentions have cost them their life, and they know it. (And the narrative continues to describe this “moment” of recognition as the killer enters the apartment and carries out his plans as the sand in the invisible timer runs out). I have never read a more chilling opening in any crime thriller.
The looming threat is unstoppable and heartless as “The Terminator” and the murders meticulously carried out to maximize suffering and cause slow blood loss. The reader feels the frustration and muted anger of Midnight the data analyst who knows that Count Dracula is walking around targeting new victims. She is powerless against the rich and powerful corporation, and the police are devoid of provable facts and suspects.
The author provides some needed backstory for the murderer, and the character development for Midnight and the other female protagonists is deftly applied to the narrative. I really liked this one from Fields. I was never bored, and I found the differences in “Profile K” and other titles of its ilk refreshing. There are of course the prerequisite plot twists which fill in puzzle pieces as opposed to landing like rocks needing an emergency dose of suspense of disbelief.
The climax to the storyline was frenetic and nerve wracking and the denouement was a heaping of rewarding warmth and harmony for the long-suffering heroine Midnight, her twin Dawn, and their newest addition Doris.

Hoezo wist ik niet eerder hoe gruwelijk Helen Fields schrijft 🤯. O mijn god. Deze moordenaar is zo gruwelijk. Psychopaat eerste klas. Ik hield echt mijn hart vast en kon niet stoppen met lezen. Sorry, maar als je dit soort dingen kunt schrijven, ben je niet helemaal goed. Maar ik heb als thrillerliefhebber wel zo hard genoten 🤭.
Het boek is vanwege het profilen en de hele zaak zo bizar interessant en uniek. Ik vind het psychologische deel ervan echt heel interessant. Maar sorry. Er zit één scène in die zo goor is. Ik moet daar nog even van bijkomen denk ik. Gadverdamme 🐀.

Profile K by Helen Fields was a good pager-turner with a plot that brought a spark of intensity and characters that helped tell the story. As a certain quirky character was introduced and the story progressed then it did get slightly awkward for me as reader but I felt it wrapped up in a really good way and hope it continues. With that said, I look forward to the next book by this author!

Five ✨ A gripping read with a unique storyline and beautiful names for the main characters! Just a heads up: the plot was quite gruesome, but I found it added an intriguing edge. While you'll need to be prepared I wholeheartedly recommend this book. I can't wait to read more of Helen Sarah Fields' work! Next up The Shadow Man !!

Dit deel bevat echt de nodige spanning en dat blijft eigenlijk zo tot het eind. Ook de psychologische elementen vond ik erg interessant om te lezen.
Connie Woolwine heeft deze keer een kleinere rol en eigenlijk kun je dit ook prima als losstaand verhaal lezen. Het deed mij soms een beetje denken aan de stijl van Chris Carter, dus een aanrader als je hier van houdt!
Ik heb sowieso genoten en ik wil meer lezen van deze serie en auteur!!!

Fields has been a thriller author ive seen a lot of trusted book friends raving about for a while, so i finally decided to give her a shot! Profile K was such a unique story, blending a serial killer thriller with an almost sci-fi type of element. both the story and the writing of the characters were really strong, and made for a great binge read.

Profile K begins with one of the most terrifying first chapters I’ve ever read! Helen Fields certainly knows how to capture the reader’s attention from the off! I found myself on tenterhooks, anticipating what lay ahead. Profile K has an unusual premise for a psychological thriller, but I do love the unusual. It’s a real page turner, (cliched but true) that will keep you riveted until the very last page.
Midnight Jones works as an analyst for Necto that offers profiling for employment and education. In her routine day-to-day work, she comes across a Profile K file. Code K is for those who have no empathy and lack boundaries. They have all the makings of a potential killer! After the most gruesome murder of a local girl named Chloe Martin, Midnight attempts to inform Necto of her concerns, but they appear unwilling to listen to her. Why? here’s where I say ‘you will just have to read the book to find it!’ In finding the file, she could be the killer’s next victim.
One thing that’s guaranteed to get me hooked is when an author takes the reader on a terrifying journey into the mind of a killer. I have a morbid curiosity about the darker side of the human psyche, so the chapters told from the killers’ POV are not only fascinating but give the reader an insight into a very disturbed individual. Midnight is one of those characters you immediately warm to. Her major role is caring for her twin sister Dawn, who has special needs. She’s loyal, extremely intelligent and resilient. A strong supporting cast aids her in her investigation. I especially loved Doris with her upbeat personality and warm nature.
Profile K isn’t for the fainthearted as some scenes are pretty grim, but they add a genuine sense of terror to the overall read. There were so many brilliant twists and turns. Each time I thought I had it all worked out, the author threw a curve ball, which certainly enhanced my reading experience. Expertly plotted, Helen Fields throws a spanner in the works with perfectly placed red herrings that misdirect the reader at every given opportunity. The plot is dark, gripping and refreshingly different to most plots in the psychological genre, which is a HUGE bonus. I’m hoping the teaser at the end leads to a series. Highly recommend to those who love dark psychological thrillers.

What have I just read?! Profile K is so so original! I loved it. I also want to know what goes on in Helen Field's mind that she's capable of coming up with such a brilliantly twisted story. Absolute kudos to her.
The story is intense, gripping, creepy, full of tension and unexpected twists and turns. It's just so good! It gets a bit graphic in places so it's definitely not for the faint-hearted though.
I really liked the lead character, Midnight Jones. There's certain vulnerability to her but also strenghth and willingness to do right regardless of what the cost might be to her. I loved her relationship with her sister, the obvious tenderness and love that's there.
Also, can we mention Doris? Doris is one of those characters who you just want to be friends with and have them in your life. Doris rules for sure.
Well-written, intriguing and original, Profile K is a must read for fans of dark and twisted thrillers. Highly recommended.

“Profile K”, by Helen Fields
A generous 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was my 3rd book by this author, who wrote the DI Callanach series (which I should continue reading from book #3).
I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed this book.
It was not flawless, but it was very engrossing (and brutal), hence my ratings.
I thought the concept was excellent and some characters were well developed.
Midnight’s love for her twin sister was simply beautiful, touching and believable.
And although she is pretty smart, she does make wrong decisions. The only thing I didn’t like was that she easily reaches a conclusion without solid evidence..
We were introduced to an inspector who did absolutely nothing.
There was also another extra person that I think was only there to cause a distraction.
Regardless, the flow was perfect for me, but the writing was a bit repetitive in some parts.

Verdict: fast-paced and addictive but a tad too gruesome and violent for my taste. The ending went off the rails, like a bad slasher flick with something to prove.
The setting is Clapham, a district of London, in the not so distant future, but with the darkness, crime, jaded cops, and evil corporation always watching, it felt more like Gotham City.
The female lead was called Midnight, which no. That's a black cat's name. Her twin sister was called Dawn, and even that is all wrong; the opposite of Dawn is Dusk, not Midnight. Why wasn't the sister called Noon?
Stupid names aside, I'm going to check out more books by this author because this one was quite entertaining.

Jeetjecrimineetje, wat een verhaal weer!!!? Echt op het puntje van mijn stoel gezeten tijdens het lezen. Het is een heftig, goor, bizar, gruwelijk, en ook zo'n verschrikkelijk sterk verhaal. De opbouw, de sterke personages.

Midnight Jones works for a big biotech company called Netco which deals with HR profiling as a data analyst. She comes across a Profile K after some psychometric tests have taken place and she is so shocked that this person is a potential sadistic killer and she doesn’t know who to trust or inform her findings as Necto, even though it has its perks Netco has really tight security concerns and upper management are not the friendliest people to get along with. Her she also has concerns as that person who the profile is based on, knows that she has viewed. Is her life in danger?
When a few days later, women that are living alone are suddenly brutally and sadistically murdered in their own homes. Has the killer already started is killing spree?
Helen Fields is becoming a favourite author of mine. Due to her latest book Profile K. This is fast paced action-packed thriller. It is well written and plotted and it also made you think of what these types of things that Biotech companies are capable of. This is a bit grisly in parts too. So it is not for the faint hearted. But for me personally I really enjoyed this book, especially the ending. I was holding my breath in anticipation to the conclusion of this book. 5 big stars from me.

The Profiler (Profile K) by Helen Fields is psychological thriller about a woman who works for a biotech company. She discovers an individual with a strange personality rating.
First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Avon Books and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
This was soooo good. I also loved that Dr. Connie Woolwine, a character from other books by this author, was a character in this book.
I loved Midnight, and her devotion to her sister. She was also very devoted to finding the truth. Absolutely a great character. Jessica and Doris were just as likable. A couple who I started out liking turned out to be a disappointment. I actually like when an author does that, as it makes the whole story a little more interesting. Not that this story needed anything else. There were a lot of twists.
The story looked at company ethics, and existing technology that "could" be used for nefarious means. Scary thought! It also looks at greed.
Overall, this was a really good book. Be warned that it can get a little bloody. I loved every minute of it!

Discovering and alerting her company to Profile K makes Midnight a target. The only way to save herself is to hunt down the real identity of ‘k’.
This was unputdownable! Nail bitingly good, tense and made me want to jump into the book to rewrite a few HR policies at times 😅🤯😫😖!

This unfortunately was a DNF for me. While I loved the Luc Callanach series and found them gripping, this book totally felt flat to me. I'm completely in the minority, I know, but honestly it started off badly for me when I read the sibling characters' names were "Midnight" and "Dawn" 🥱🙄 Please just give characters regular names if you want a story to be taken seriously. From thereon it felt unrealistic and unbelievable. I gave it to 27% and found I just wasn't interested in knowing what happened so I stopped reading it.

Midnight Jones (superhero name, no biggie) works as a data analyst at a world-renowned biotech company that screens individuals for, say, university applications. But one day she comes across a data set that must surely be wrong… or is it? What seems like a system error is, in fact, the „Profile K“ (for killer) data of one particular applicant. And when a local woman is murdered, Midnight soon suspects that said applicant may be behind the gruesome killing - and she knows he won‘t stop.

This was my second book by Helen Fields. It wasn't as impressing as The Institution but I enjoyed it very much. It was original with a strong main protagonist, Midnight. I admired her determination and sense of doing what's right. Mainly her love and devotion for her twin, Dawn.

Flies, of course, needed squashing”
A cat and mouse serial killer thriller, Profile K, is a fast paced page turner! It had my pulse racing at points and some good twists along the way, too.
There were plenty of likeable characters. I really got behind Midnight and loved her relationship with her sister. Doris was my favourite though, absolutely adorable!
I chose to read this after John Marrs recommended it and I’m pleased I did.

Always eager to get my hands on the work of Helen Sarah Fields, I gladly reached for this book. Fields has often derived a strong thriller from the ideas she puts on paper, which keeps the reader hooked until all comes together. This book and its premise are sure to open the reader’s mind to a new and unique idea, which can provide hours of entertainment as the truth rises to the surface with a number of chilling thills that weave their way into the reader’s mind. A strong story that has me impressed with the direction it took.
Psychological testing is all the rage, be it for university admission of employment vetting. Midnight works for one of the largest companies in this field, sifting though the various results for those who have taken the different tests. Usually mundane or without much outside the norm, one day she stumbles upon something highly irregular and troubling.
Midnight accesses the results of Profile K, a young man whose university assessment reveals darker and violent tendencies. She wants to raise a red flag, but is stymied by her superiors, which does not sit well. Midnight copies the results onto her own drive and makes her way out into the public, in hopes of shedding some light on things. When some violent attacks and murders begin, Midnight can see some parallels with the profile she reviewed.
A deeper look shows Midnight that there may have been some coaching within the testing parameter, as though her company has been trying to create or hone serial killers through the testing platform. As both the information she has seen and holds onto becomes more volatile, Midnight surmises that she is onto something, but cannot be sure where to turn. Who can she trust and how will Midnight stop things from happening? Without answers, it appears the company trying to use one of its applicants to become a killer, someone who may be sent to target Midnight next. Fields offers up a chilling story that has all the elements of a great thriller.
There is nothing like a great thriller novel to get the blood pumping. Helen Sarah Fields has never failed to check all the boxes when she writes, be it a series or standalone work. Fields uses a strong narrative base to get things moving and the lure the reader into the middle of things. She has a great ability to develop thing swiftly, yet not keep them too basic. The use of characters helps add depth and flavours the larger piece, keeping the reader guessing which what things will go and how they will move towards resolution.
Plot points are a key aspect to his story, with mystery and suspense fuelling the larger story. The surprises and twists embedded within the larger story make for some great tend to keep the reader on edge and leave things in a state of uncertainty. Fields knows how to ramp things up and keep the tension buzzing until the final reveal, which does not always resolve everything. I cannot wait to see what’s next for Fields and how the thrills will present themselves!
Kudos Madam Fields, for a great story that has me questioning a great deal.

Midnights Zwillingsschwester Dawn hat körperliche und geistige Einschränkungen. Die Eltern der Beiden waren irgendwann mit der Pflege von Dawn überfordert und sind auf eine Weltreise - man kann es nicht anders ausdrücken - abgehauen. Nun fällt Midnight die Aufgabe zu, sich um ihre Schwester zu kümmern. Und sie liebt Dawn über alles. Um gut für Dawn sorgen zu können, braucht Midnight einen lukrativen Job. Den glaubt sie bei Necto, einer Biotechfirma in London, gefunden zu haben. Bis sie befürchten muss, im Rahmen eines psychologischen Test, den sie überwachen sollte, ein Mörderprofil entdeckt zu haben.
Wie geht Midnight mit ihrer Entdeckung um? Sie merkt schnell, dass ihre Vorgesetzten nicht so sehr an möglichen Mördern interessiert sind. Da scheint es mehr darum zu gehen, inwieweit Midnight ihre Kompetenzen überschritten hat. Diese Reaktion überrascht Michight dann doch und sie ist hin und her gerissen zwischen ihrer Verantwortung ihrer Schwester gegenüber und der gegenüber allen Menschen, die vor einem möglichen Killer geschützt werden sollten. Da wird eine junge Frau aus der näheren Umgebung brutal zu Tode gebracht und Midnight befürchtet, es könnte der mögliche Killer sein, dessen Profil sie gesehen hat. Und er kennt Midnights Vornamen. Wird er weiter töten?
In diesem spannenden Thriller steckt Midnight Jones in einer Zwickmühle. Welche Verantwortung wiegt schwerer, die für ihre Schwester, welche nicht selbst für sich sorgen kann, oder die für die unbekannten Dritten, die in Gefahr geraten, wenn der mögliche Killer nicht dingfest gemacht wird. Allerdings geht es auch darum, wieso Midnights Arbeitgeber so beinahe abweisend reagiert als Midnight gleich zu Beginn von ihrer Entdeckung berichtet. Um die Spannung noch zu erhöhen, muss sich Midnight auch der Sorge stellen, die es auslöst, dass der mögliche Killer zumindest ihren Vornamen kennt. Einige Schilderungen in diesem Buch sind möglicherweise etwas schwer zu ertragen. Auch fragt man sich manchmal, ob man mit gewissen Kenntnissen über die Moral, die man vielleicht auch im wirklichen Leben hat, in der Fiktion auch noch konfrontiert werden möchte. Doch insgesamt ist man während der Lektüre bis zum fulminanten Finale sehr gefesselt.
Der Roman ist nicht als Reihenstart gekennzeichnet. Es wurde allerdings nicht verwunderlich, wenn Midnights integerer Charakter doch wieder in Erscheinung treten würde.
