I have a deep affection for mysteries that unravel gently, leaving me thrilled, satisfied, and always craving the next adventure.
Living in the beautiful Pacific Northwest with my family, our energetic Labrador, and a couple of curious cats. I draw inspiration from life's simple pleasures – walks in nature, a good book on a rainy day, and knitting cozy comforts.
When I was young I spent many long afternoons curled up with one of our cats reading Agatha Christie, and wishing I could grow up and solve mysteries like Poirot. Now I’m delighted to turn this passion into crafting each book as a personal puzzle for you to unravel.
I'm excited to welcome you to my world of whodunits, and I hope my books spark as much joy and intrigue in you as they do for me.
Mystery at the Lighthouse, the first book in the Sparrow Haven Cozy Mystery series, is a pleasant mystery set in New England, a place I would love to visit one day. Claire Harlow has created a set of characters that you want to spend time with. The main character is Olivia Harper the town librarian with her dog Barkley, her best friend Milly is an antiques dealer. She is also ably assisted by her historian father and a friendly local policeman. I did feel Olivia was unbelievably successful with her research, encountering no dead ends or missing information in her search for the truth behind a trial in the 1870s. My only other criticism is that some of the passages describing clothes and food were oddly jarring, as if they were from a magazine not a paragraph in a novel. Otherwise, a nice easy read. 3 and a half stars.
This is a great mystery! Olivia is known for loving to solve mysteries. Following a storm, a mysterious painting comes into her life bringing its own storms.
The blend of characters is wonderful and they each bring something unique to the story. You’ll feel like a part of the community with the great descriptions of the town.
You’ll enjoy plenty of laughs while also being touched by the poignant backstory.
With so many twists and turns in the story, you probably never figure out whodunnit!

This is an excellent cozy mystery. There were a lot of twists and turns that left you guessing until the end. The characters and plot were well developed and drew you in from the first page. I highly recommend reading this book.

Murder at the Lighthouse is a part of the Sparrow Haven cozy mystery series. It is an historical who-done-it solved in the present day. Olivia is a librarian in Sparrow Haven a small town on the coast of Maine (I think). She and her friend Amelia ("Milly") apparently have assisted in solving quite a few mysteries in the past and are trusted by the police.
They were given an oil painting, later dated to the 1870s, by two boys who said they found it in the old lighthouse where they had discovered a hidden chamber which only came to light after a severe storm had severely damaged the structure. The painting depicted a young man clutching the hand of a young woman as she pulled away from him with the lighthouse in the background.
When Olivia decided to explore the hidden chamber, she met a handsome stranger near the lighthouse. Ethan, the new town Vet, asked to join her and thereby became the third amateur sleuth in the story. Olivia eventually made two additional discoveries, a small wooden chest and a diary all linked to the son of the lighthouse keeper of the day and the high class woman in the painting. The trio of sleuths received assistance in their research including Olivia's father, a historian, who learned about the descendants of the man and woman in the painting. It became clear they did not want the story of the illicit love affair to come to light.
I enjoyed reading about the details of their research including the careful descriptions of the current residents, the old Victorian house styles, the clothing, and the social mores of the late 19th century. I recommend this book and have no hesitation in giving it a 5* rating. I plan to read the next book in the series to see what happens to the main characters (including a hint of romance).
This is the first book I have read by this author and I will be reading more. I really enjoyed this mystery. It's a little different from what I'm used to reading. I'm used to mystery books, but rarely one that takes place more than a century ago.
Olivia, who lives in the small New England town of Sparrow Haven is the town librarian and an amateur sleuth. Mysteries has always fascinated her and her best friend, Milly. They always seem to be involved in some kind of investigation, much to the dismay of Detective Fred O'Malley. When some local teens find an old painting, it piques Olivia's curiosity, so of course she has to find the secrets hiding beneath the brush strokes. Olivia, her Faithful companion, a Golden Retriever named Barkley, the hot new veterinarian, Ethan, and her best friend Milly solve a 100-year-old mystery with present implications. During their journey, they uncover family secrets that may be best left alone. Could uncovering the past get Olivia, Ethan and Millie killed!!
If you love a suspenseful mystery that takes you on a journey to past secrets that carry on to the present, then you will love this book. I read it in one sitting, which I rarely do. I just couldn't seem to put it down. I had to find out how it ends and it definitely did not disappoint. The author just has a way of keeping the reader engaged and wanting more.
***I received this free ARC. This review is my honest opinion***
Olivia is greeted by some teens, who'd been exploring the old lighthouse after the storm had passed through. They brought her an old painting they'd discovered after damage at the lighthouse broken an opening. It was very old, and it pictured a young couple parting. One could see that th woman didn't want to leave the young man and the lighthouse was in the background. As Olivisa, her BFF from childhood and Ethan the handsome new vet, try to find out more about the painting the search leads to an extremely rare red diamond, old diaries, an old murder, Olivia and Amelia being shot at, Olivia's house being broken into and trashed and a very old feud between two "leading" families. Can the trio, and Olivia's dog Barkley find all the answers safely? What about the diamond and painting? The action keeps a steady pace, the description of the setting is spot on, and we see the characters develop as we get to know them. And there's so romance, too. I really enjoyed reading this book and I look forward to other books about this trio of sleuths + 1 dog who does his doggie parts.

I really enjoyed reading how Olivia, Ethan and Milly all sleuthed together with the help of course from sweet Barkley. Who’s a good boy, Barkley? When Olivia got involved solving a historical mystery that was possibly a murder mystery, she found herself and her friends in some danger a few times, but it definitely didn’t stop her.
I love this town and how all the people seemed to have everyone’s backs and respected Olivia for all her sleuthing. I’d actually like to read more about those cases she did that apparently was never a prequel or maybe it’ll be one eventually. One was even a murder case so yeah, she’s pretty darn experienced for an amateur and lucky to have Fred being so agreeable. He sure seemed like a sweetheart anyway even though he’d probably growl if someone called him that lol. I really hope there’ll be more in this series whether it’s a new mystery going ahead (more of Ethan and Olivia please!) or a prequel with Olivia solving that murder case.
"Mystery at the Lighthouse: A Sparrow Have Cozy Mystery" by Claire Harlow reads a bit like a first book and a bit like a book a few books into a series. There were times I didn't totally understand something, like I'd missed it because I hadn't read the previous book. Other times, it read like an introduction to the characters.
The mystery part focused more around a painting found in the old light house that then lead to the mysterious death of one the painting's subjects. The whole significance of the painting felt a bit stretched, especially for how hidden everything else had been. I also have a whole rant about the conclusions the characters were making about the people in the painting based solely on the painting but it could be something that bothers just me. Over all it was an interesting cozy mystery that focused on a painting and very old cold case.

This is a wonderful cozy mystery book that you can't put down once you begin. With its twists and turns and a little humor along the way, you will definitely want to keep turning pages until the end. Our main character is Olivia Harper the town librarian and amateur sleuth. When after a big storm, a painting and an old diary were found in the lighthouse. With her best friend, Millie, the new vet in town and Barkley, Olivia's golden retriever, they are the hunt to solve a cold case attached to their findings. But it isn't so simple as the situation gets dangerous. With so many twists and turns you find yourself trying to guess until the end! I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
Overall a good mystery with a romance thrown in. Lots of description added for readers who enjoy seeing the scenery and outfits worn. Small New England coastal town, likeable characters, good plot.
A bit of editor's polish needed: a few missing letters, words, double info, at times too much telling. A few things strained my credibility: 130 years or so ago the Moores lived at the lighthouse and their clothes are still hanging in the closet. In spite of structural damage, dampness, storms, vandals? No one else lived there later? A trial with a judge and jury and no defendant? It rather seems the father was on trial for saying his son was murdered. Olivia promising not to tell anyone without permission, then gets on the phone and tells everybody.
I really liked this book, the people and the story line. There were several proofreading errors that need to be fixed but otherwise I really liked this book. I hope there's more in a series coming. I would definitely make sure to read it.
I liked that Olivia and Milly worked with the police, not against them or trying to take over the case. There are lots of mysteries where the police are made to look like idiots for not being able to figure out the perpetrator in the story. I also like the small town image, everybody knowing each other, even the things they don't want anyone to know.
If you like good, clean cozy mysteries with a touch of romance, this is a good book for you.
In the first book of the Sparrow Haven cozy mysteries we are introduced to Olivia and her dog Barkley along with her best friend and sleuthing partner -Millie. You can almost smell the sea air as you savour each page of the mystery. After an old painting is discovered in the local lighthouse, the story builds into a tale of forbidden love, age old feuds, cover ups through a barricade of silence, and of course hints of murder which are skillfully interwoven into a most excellent book. Couple all this with the possibility of a burgeoning romance for Olivia and you've got the beginnings of a delightful series! Highly recommend the investment of time in the series.
This was enjoyable but not the author's best work. The original mystery of an old painting found in a hidden area of an abandoned lighthouse was intriguing. From this discovery of the mysterious painting all sorts of assumptions are made along with looking for clues in the old lighthouse and keeper's quarters from the late 1800's. The fact they found things there, significant items no less, still there was a little unbelievable. Additionally the amount of detail information they discovered on the internet from a court case back so far in time did not seem possible. I did like the main characters and overall the story was entertaining.
Olivia Harper ,Milly Johnson and Fredrick O'Malley were all busy after a storm hit the village when Nathan brings a painting of the lighthouse done by Monroe Mooore to them. This starts a whole lot of interesting investigations that involved the feud of two local families. Olivia being an amateur sleuth was committed to solving this old mystery of the death of Monroe . A lot of twist and turns and quirky characters to make this a exciting read. I received this book via booksirans and leave a honest review . I recommend this book to other readers.
Oliva is a die hard amateur sleuth. Some teenagers gave her a very old painting they found in Sparrow Haven's derelict lighthouse. Assisted by her bestie Milly and the new handsome vet she tries to find out who is in the painting and what happened. It is a very nice story, entertaining, well written, and there is a touch of romance. A real recommendation. I hope there will be more book to follow.

What connection does a painting found in an old lighthouse from the mid 1800's have to the families of a modern day village that would cause someone to attack the people looking into the origin of the painting? Amateur sleuth Olivia, her best friend Milly, and the new village vet Ethan are determined to solve the mystery and get the answers to the questions that they find while searching. With the help of Olivia's dog Barkley they will not stop until they uncover the truth. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Mystery at the Lighthouse is book 1 in A Sparrow Haven Cozy Mystery by Claire Harlow. I thought that this cozy was excellent. The murder happened in 1870, but, there is a contemporary mystery. A painting of Monroe and Caroline spark a mystery of a red diamond necklace. The lighthouse has a hidden chamber, people are being threatened and hurt, plus… the feud between the Whites and the Adams is right in the mix. I believe that this is an interesting cozy mystery. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
Olivia and her faithful companion, Barkley, are part of a sleuthing team, along with the handsome new vet in town, Ethan, and her lifelong friend Milly. A mysterious painting is found in the lighthouse and reveals a mystery surrounding the people in the painting.
The author is very descriptive of the scenery, architecture and other background elements. I could picture it in my head. I like when authors do that. The storyline moved along well. I did not guess who did it.
I received this book as an ARC and am leaving this review voluntarily.
Mystery at the lighthouse by Claire Harlow. Wow what a book. It was a different read and it got me from the first chapter and kept me til the end. I rate this book a 5 star. Olivia and a guy she met went to an old lighthouse to see what they could find about a picture that a young boy gave her she want to know about it. And then from there she get herself into a lot of trouble. That’s all I’m telling you, you will find out more about it after you get the book it a great book and I highly recommend this book.
I was super excited to read this book because I love a good cozy mystery, but this one fell flat for me. The story was good overall but there were things throughout the book that seemed amiss. The characters didn’t seem to have a consistent voice throughout. They way they spoke would change and various times. Plus some of the thoughts of Olivia were odd. There were a few grammatical errors throughout.
Thank you to BookSirens and Claire Harlow for this ARC! I received this book for free, but I’m leaving this review voluntarily.
An evocative painting discovered in a secret room in the lighthouse depicting an obviously forbidden love affair gets the attention of Olivia and her bestie Millie. The search to figure out who the figures in the painting are and their story captivates the two amateur sleuths! But who would guess that delving into the past would put their lives in danger? A story that will surely entertain you with its tales, both past and present. I received an advance copy of this book and write this review voluntarily.
I enjoyed the story about Olivia Harper, the town librarian and an astute amateur detective, finding a cold case with a hidden treasure and a diary chronicling a tragic tale about an old family feud.
Olivia has the help with her faithful Golden Retriever, Barkley, her spirited confidante, Milly, and the handsome new Veterinarian in town, Ethan Foster, Olivia begins a dangerous journey into the past.
I was disappointed with the narration of the virtual voice because it took away a more complete entertainment of the story.
I really enjoyed this book. The characters are believable and easy to follow. Olivia and her best friend Milly worry about her town Sparrow Haven after a storm comes through during the night. The lighthouse received some damage and exposed a secret room where a portrait is found. The back story on this portrait is stirring up trouble in Sparrow Haven. Follow Olivia, Milly and Ethan their new sleuthing friend as they figure out what is going on in Sparrow Haven.
This mystery starts out as a "long ago event" which develops into a murder case as the sleuth, Olivia, her bestie, Milly, and a new person in town, Ethan, team up with the police detective, Fred to to discover ND solve what happened a long time ago.
There are many developments a long the way that kept my interest throughout this well written and well researched story.
I did receive an ARC copy through BookSirens and am leaving a voluntary review. I enjoyed reading this book.
I normally do not pick this genre of book but thought to give it a go instead of my usual adventure style books full of blood and thunder. I could not leave the book alone and forced myself to have a break. The plot appears simple but is still captivating and has twists and turns to surprise one all the time. A most enjoyab read and an advert for New England by the beautiful and descriptive writing. The coast and interior a pleasure to imagine.
This story is a great reading experience! The story is a mixture of the people living life with joy and happiness while searching for an answer to a puzzle! While exploring the abandoned lighthouse the heroine discovers a valuable and intriguing piece of artwork! The story then goes forward as the artwork is found to be part of a family heirlooms! Can the heroine find the truth about the artwork! Reading this wonderful story was very exciting!
I’ve read the rest of the series already & decided I should read the first book. Olivia with her dog Barkley are at the old lighthouse because earlier that day some teens had given her a beautiful painting of a young couple. There they meet the new vet, Ethan. Whilst exploring the place someone shouts at them & threatens Olivia. Naturally Olivia & her lifelong friend, Tilly along with Ethan decide to follow the story of the painting. A very exciting read.
Olivia was given a painting that some teenagers found at a dilapidated lighthouse. It was a picture of two lovers saying their farewell. Olivia knew that there was a mystery attached to the painting, including a story of forbidden love. The amateur sleuth started snooping around. She soon discovered that there was a 150 year old unsolved murder that had been covered up. Bringing the truth to the light put her own life at risk even now, many years later.
What an intriguing mystery, with two stories involving the old lighthouse, one set in the past and one set in the present. The way the characters interact is realistic, and the plots eventually combine to make a cohesive story. The way the suspense builds is cleverly done, and I enjoyed reading this story. I received an ARC, but am voluntarily giving my opinion.
