Escape… a new beginning.

That’s what Demi Fedora yearns for. And so, she leaves everything and everyone she knows to move to her deceased grandfather’s derelict cabin in the wilds of Alaska, the one he left her in his will.

Meeting Whittaker Hart isn’t in her plans. Though the ruggedly handsome gold prospector does everything to win her over, she keeps her distance until her need to survive a life totally foreign to her nature overcomes her desire to do everything herself.

After rescuing a young drunk and taking on the tough life of a greenhorn, she realizes one thing. Between fixing up the place to make it livable for the coming winter and learning how to exist in a land filled with vicious storms and treacherous wildfires, she can’t cope alone.

No matter how much she yearns for independence, she needs help…. a lot of help.

I enjoyed this book even though one of the lead characters was very frustrating. The young woman inherited her grandpa's property in Alaska and was really looking forward to moving there for the peace and quiet. However, when she gets there, things are not as she expected. She is strong willed and very independent and very reluctant to accept anyone's help...which she desperately needs. She accepts help from a very friendly and good looking man, but is afraid to get close to him. It takes a long time to learn her reasons, but doesn't fully explain her attitude toward him.

The story includes many little events and interactions between the two main characters, and a third one who comes in to play a big part. He is an affable young man, but has a terrible alcohol problem. Whit, the good looking man and Demi, the young woman, decide to help him get sober. This creates many more interesting situation. The three of them work together to restore this old property that Demi inherited. All seems to be going well until a wild fire breaks out and threatens the entire town. It's an all hands on deck situation. A couple of chapters are devoted to the fire-fighting campaign before the book abruptly ends. In other words to be continued in the next book. I hate when this happens. I don't know when or if I will read the next book. I don't know if I have been drawn in enough. We'll see.

Demi Fedora decides to leave her old life behind and move to the small cabin in Alaska that she fondly remember, and that her grandfather left to her when he passed. She will meet people on her way to her new home in the wilds of Alaska some of whom she will remember fondly. Others she will try to keep her distance from especially the handsome gold prospector Whittaker Hart. She is shocked at the derelict condition of the cabin but ignoring the advice and sometimes warnings of the locals, Demi is determined to get her home livable for the coming winter. After a young drunk tries to run her off, she will end up taking him under her wing, and with Whit's help they will nurse him back to health. She will begin the difficult task of preparing the cabin for the long dark with help from Glen, the former drunk, whom she has offered a home in the cabin he also has fond memories of.
Wow, the characters in this book ae so well written and realistic it was easy to feel like you actually know them. Action, adventure, terrifying moments, some unexpected twists in the plot, and a brilliantly penned narrative, make this a must-read first in what I think will be a fantastic trilogy. I am already looking forward to the next book.

Demi, Whit, and Glen

Mimi Barbour has a new book. Everything stops until its finished. Another great read. I am waiting "patiently" for book #2.
The blurb does a better job of describing the story than I can. I can see the changes in the cabin as they work on it. The escapee was terrifying but the forest fire was so intense. Smoke gets in your lungs breathing. Wind changes all smoke and ashes. Now to check on everything almost breathing again. Meet you at Miami's next book

Good start:
This was an interesting start to a new series. As it is a trilogy, not all was finalised and it was a little short and slow moving. However the characters were interesting and I look forward to spending more time with them in upcoming books. If you enjoy women's fiction heavy on character development and descriptions (but less on romance or intrigue), then this should suit you well.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. All opinions expressed are solely my own.

What a great read this first book is in Mimi Barbour's new trilogy. The characters are so well done, you feel like you know them and are living through them on their wild Alaskan ride. The descriptions of the landscape, cabin, and everything else are so vivid that you can easily visualize the whole story. I loved every bit of this book and am waiting on pins and needles for the next installment.

Good read, but . . .

A fascinating story of hardships and survival. I enjoyed it right up until the non-ending. I greatly dislike cliffhangers. Good thing the next part is available. I rather like this author.
