It takes a special kind of person to get dumped and fired on the same day. Yep. It’s me. I’m the special one.
When my life takes such a spectacular turn for the worse, my three best friends know the perfect way to cheer me up––a weekend trip to Evening Shade, Oregon.
The movies that shaped my teen years put the quaint little town on the map, making it a tourist destination for werewolf-loving fangirls who want the full movie experience. And I’m most definitely a card-holding member of that eccentric fandom, even though my friends are decidedly not.
After copious amounts of alcohol that lead to the revelation of the worst kind of betrayal, I kick my backstabbing ex-best friends out and decide to stay in Evening Shade for the rest of the summer. I have nothing to go back to, so why not?
Enter my new landlord, Trace Bardin, a man thirteen years my senior and the spitting image of Wolf Daddy from—you guessed it—my favorite movie. The downside? Trace hates the comparison, and I make the colossal mistake of howling at him the first time I laid eyes on him. Don’t judge. I was kind of drunk at the time.
But if we can get past my little faux-pas and his conviction that I’m far too young for him, we could have the summer of our lives. Then I’ll go back to Seattle, pick up the broken pieces of my life, and move on.
Piper James lives in Idaho with her husband, two teenage sons, two cats, and a dog.
Her favorite things are romance novels, coffee, potato chips, and her Jeep Wrangler…and her family, of course. Seriously. She loves her family more than coffee and her jeep. *exaggerated wink*
When she’s not writing, she watches ghost shows and spends most of her time trying to convince her family their house is haunted. Because it is.
She wrote YA paranormal romance for 6 years under the name Wendi Wilson before giving into her desire to write spicy romcoms, and it was the best career decision she’s ever made…until she decides to write a book about the ghosts. Because they are definitely real.
I received an ARC and was not disappointed!! With a little bit of everything -humor, feels, spice- this book is everything I always expect from Piper James. I love that friendship takes a main role in the story and the main character finds the love she's always looked for in those friendships. It's a story for those who loved to imagine what it would be like to live out their wildest fangirl fantasies.
"This is what friendship should feel like. Honest. Unconditional. Generous. And I swear, I’ll be that kind of friend to Willow in return. It’s the least I can do to pay her back for all her kindness."
"What is it about her? She’s the lighthouse beacon I never knew I needed. Do I really want to disappear back into the fog?"
"Now is the time for absolute love, to show her how precious she is to me. To reassure her that I’ll never leave her again, and if she tries to flee, I’ll chase her to the ends of the earth like the werewolves she loves so much would their own mates."

Oh my gosh, this was so good! As a fan of a certain group of books/movies, I really got the FMC. And you don't have to be a fan of a certain group of "books/movies" to get her. I mean, she represents the fan in all of us. And she's a great person. Who doesn't love their FMC to be someone you'd want to be friends with? Keegan was a sweetheart.
Anyways, it was so funny. I laughed so, so many times. But it was also a great example of female friendships. It's hard to make them as an adult and to see how fickle and easily they can be lost. AND not respected either!
I enjoyed the town and the people. It's just quirky enough. 😀
And of course, I loved the MMC. Trace was, of course, a grump. And I about died with the Wolf Daddy thing. Like hysterics.
HEA Standalone, interconnected characters Fangirls of Evening Shade series Book 1 Age-gap , Grump/ Curvy girl
Trigger warnings Death of parents
Keegan (26, mfc) Trace (39, mmc) Madison (friend of mfc, rude) Sloan (friend of mfc, rude) Pressley (friend of mfc, people pleaser) Carter (ex of mfc) Willow (sister of mmc)
Keegan is a huge fan of Cursed, a set of werewolf movies that came out when she was a teen. Her life just took a turn for the worse, and her friends decided she needed a vacation. They took her to the town the movies were filmed. Trace, a local, looks strikingly similar to one of the main male characters of those movies and hates it. Those movies have disturbed his town and his life more than they should have. When Keegan sees him, her drunkenness shows by her howling at him. Things in her life turn again when she finds out Madison is sleeping with her ex and has been since before he was an ex. The other two knew and didn't tell her. She throws them out and decides to finish her vacation alone. She even extends it 8 weeks. She's made Trace mad, but she plans on enjoying her time. When he finds out why she's in town, will he stop being an ahole? Will they make something work or will this just be a fling?
This was a cute, kind of antsy book. I can't wait for the rest of the series.
Piper James has done it again. I absolutely love this book just as much as her other books/series.
Keegan’s life takes a turn when she’s dumped and fired all in the same day, only to then be betrayed by her closest friends who she thought had her back not long after that. With nothing left to lose and nothing holding her back she decides to stay in the quant little town of Evening Shade—the setting of her favorite movie franchise—for the rest of the summer.
Enter Trace (the hot guy who’s destined to steal her heart), Willow (the cool witchy chick who shows her real friendship), and a former friend whom she thought she lost to show Keegan that not all is lost. The life she had planned may have veered way of course, but sometimes the unexpected paths you find yourself on is the one that leads you to finding yourself and the people that make you truly happy, and that’s exactly the path Keegan finds herself on.
As always, this book had the perfect amount of unconditional friendship, swoony, sweet and steamy at times romance, and laugh out loud moments (I’m looking at you Trace. I totally would have laughed at you too!) to keep me turning the pages. I can’t wait to read more about The Fangirls of Evening Shade.
Another fantastic and enjoyable Piper James book! I have the biggest smile on my face when I read her books - her characters are people I'd want to be friends with in real life. This book follows Fangirl Keegan as she takes a girls' trip to the location where her favorite werewolf movie series was filmed and then ends up staying when her girls reveal how they betrayed her. She has a couple of run -ins with the town grump Trace - who is also her landlord - but they both quickly realize that their insta-loathing is covering up insane chemistry. But will they be able to keep to the rules of their summer fling and let go at the end of the summer? As with all of Piper James's rom-coms, this one has a healthy dose of sass, hilarity, spice, and a friend group that I can't wait to see get their happy endings. This is a great start to a new series!
⚠️ Spoilers Ahead ⚠️ . 🌲 . 🟢 age gap 🟢 grumpy/curvy sunshine . 🌲 . 🌲 . 🌲 . As soon as I started reading this, it instantly felt like i was back in highschool, talking to my friends about that one specific vampire book 😉 I hope that’s what the author was going for or that it was a happy accident, either way, it started out good. I really enjoyed the first 75% of it, but after that it felt rushed and predictable. It was like one thing after another, starting with the ever so predictable FMC being able to magically stay in town permantely to the “break up” to the inevitable get back together. it had quite a bit of spice, but just enough to satiate you but still keep a good plot. all in all, it wasn’t a bad book and a super cute romantic comedy with lovable characters (Willow is my girl! Love her!)
I have been dying to read the latest Piper James book! (I know, I'm spoiled 🤣) I don't know what it is, but her books always bring me such joy. I devour each and every book of hers. So, it is no surprise that Keegan and Trace's story sucked me in from the start and didn't let go. Their story is extra special because it is inspired by the Twilight Fandom, and those books are the books that started my love of reading.
This book is equal parts funny, sweet, spicy 🔥, and just all-around amazing! You fall in love with every character; well not every character (I'm looking at you and you know who you are)!
So, please, do yourself a favor and read this book! I cannot wait to read the rest of this series!
I loved this twilight-esc rom com! Keegan loses her job and her boyfriend all in the same day, so her friends plan a trip to one of her favorite movie inspired towns to cheer her up. Little does she know her friends are keeping secrets and it turns into an emotional rollercoaster.
The first night there, Keegan ends up making a scene when she howls at a “wolf daddy” look a like at the bar after one too many drinks. Trace hates that fans of the movie call him by that name so he immediately leaves the bar.
Keegan and Trace end up having a few more run ins before they give in to their desires and decide having a summer fling could be fun.
Read this story - you won’t regret it. The chemistry is fire and it sets up nicely for the next book in the series. I can’t wait!
Another great book by Piper, this time we head to a small town that was took over my a film production after making a three series film there leave and leave Trace’s grumpy with his town been left with coming every weekend to see the place.
Keegan she is a curvy girl after been dumped and sacked on the same day, her friends head to the town where her favourite film was made and you can guess where that is and what happens😁
Trace and Keegan first meeting doesn’t go well but poor Keegan get’s another blow from her so called friends so she ends up staying in the rented house , the chemistry been the grumpy Trace and Keegan starts to bubble right from the off.
I loved both main characters and the side ones who are getting there own books
I have loved everything this author has written.. and when I learned about this one, I was excited. And it did not disappoint. It was funny, and sweet.. with lots of heat. Keegan.. she gets dumped, and goes to the town where her favorite movies were filmed. After finding out something about her ‘friends’ who came with her, she’s left in town Al alone. And decides to stay. And Trace.. hates everything about what the town has become since the movies were released. Especially since he gets mistaken for one of the starts of the movie. These two are complete opposites. She’s bright and optimistic. He’s broody and grumpy. But their chemistry is amazing. I loved everything about this book, and these characters. Definitely recommend it. And am looking forward to the next book in this series!
Her life is in shambles. So what is a dedicated fangirl to do when she is on the trip of a lifetime? Take a trip to the town where her favorite movie series was filmed. There she sees him. Daddy Wolf.
Daddy Wolf. If he hears that danged nickname one more time...it doesn't even matter the curvy blonde who just called him that makes his mouth water. Romance with a CursedCub is the last thing he needs.
Until she's stranded and his sister has befriended her. He might make her pulse race, but this is a bad idea, right?
I loved this so much! I was laughing out loud, fanning myself and even crying. Check out this new series today!
Once again Piper James delivers a fun, spicy and a bit angsty RomCom with a twilighteque twist. Keegan’s life imploded and her friends take her on a trip the the famous town of Evening Shade where the famed Cursed movie series was filmed (think Twilight but If it was Jacob and Bella’s story) while there Keegan meets and makes a rather bad first impression on Trace the older grumpy town local who hates all things Cursed franchise and especially hates Cursedcubs the monicker given to franchise fans. The tension and angst between these two was brilliant as was the connection they so desperately tried to deny
Keegan is someone I want to be friends with! Who doesn’t that out of the FMC! Keegan was dumped and fired in one day. She that calls for a weekend away to her favorite small town that her favorite movie takes place in! Keegan is a little self-conscious but fun, energetic, hard working, and big hearted! She just needs a couple months to see what life will hold in the future! Trace is the grump. And man is he grump. 39 single, no kids, 2 friends and bored with life! Resort owner in the small town wolf daddy is currently not really enjoying life. Keegan comes in and blows his world open! Read this!!!!
This is a cute little rom com. The FMC just lost her job and guy at the same time, so her friends take her to where her favorite movies were filmed to get away. She then finds out her best friend has been sleeping with her ex for months and kicks all the girls out. She makes friends with a local shop owner whose brother owns the place she is staying. He looks just like "wolf daddy" from the movie. He hates the movies and especially that reference. They start to get along after some unfortunate experiences. Will he be her wolf daddy and call her his good girl? Cute premise for a book. I felt like it was rushed a bit. But overall, it's not bad!
Usually, I can be generous enough to say that I’m not the audience for a book but I honestly have no idea who the audience is for this book. Within half a chapter I knew it was going to be a DNF. I stuck around for 3 chapters and then did an experiment of reading 2 lines per page - even that was generous.
She’s an incredibly immature 27yo warewolf series fan who’s had some really shitty luck and has even more shitty friends. He’s a 39yo grump who hates being mistaken for a warewolf character but does nothing about it (ex he could cut his hair and shave his beard).
The writing is awful, the plot is silly, the characters are not likable. There are no redeeming qualities to this book.
I totally enjoyed Trace and Keegan’s story! I love Evening Shade and all its craziness. Trace is so much more than his grumpy self let on. Keegan went through so much all at one time and is still such a sweet and positive person. Together, they are just perfect! I laughed and I cried - and felt every emotion in between. I am so excited that there is going to be more! I am looking forward to Willow and Pressley’s stories. ❤️
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book had an interesting premise. I do like how Piper took the Twilight fandom and twisted it into a romance story, building her town and characters off of it. Trace and Keegan may not have been destined to be together from the start, but their relationship progressed and things changed. I did like the progression for their relationship. There were feelings, but it wasn't an immediate thing. I felt the ending could have gone a tiny bit differently, but it was still a good story. I'm actually interested in seeing book two in this series.
Didn’t love waiting so long for them to have sex but this was a quick easy read that had me coming back for more. This is a new to me author, but I enjoyed her writing style and details. Trace was like a burnt marshmallow, hard and crusty on the outside but gooey in the middle, a perfect man. Keegan I liked a lot. I didn’t care too much for the third act breakup but I get it. If trace had just asked about the details of her new contract, it would have solved so many questions. I liked this enough to await book two!
4.5 stars. The fangirl in me LOVED this story. Keegan gets thrown for a loop and finds that real life is better than movies. I love Willow and can't wait for her story. As always, Piper James delivers the *spice* in the yummiest scenes. I need to find a boulder in the woods... This was a quick read and the perfect palette cleanser after some longer, darker books. Would give 5 stars, but it hit too close to home with the amount of alcohol consumption for me.
When Keegan’s life fall apart, her friends take her on a girls’ weekend to help her heal her heartbreak. But when Keegan discovers her “friends” have been lying to her and one was sleeping with her boyfriend for months, she’s left alone in Evening Shade where her favorite movie was filmed. She meets Trace who just happens to resemble the movie hero and sparks fly!! Piper James knows the formula for a fun, sexy rom-com and she never disappoints!
Another sweet, short book that’s easy to read and full of people you want to get to know. I loved how vibrant all the characters were, from our main leads to Willow and Bram!!!
I can already tell that I’ll be delighted to read the next ones when they come out, and the little glimpses we get to see into the other relationships we know will come later are just enough of a tease to keep you interested!
This was such a fun read! It gives a little nod to the Twilight series but in a sweet, romantic, lighthearted way. The MMC is a grump who can’t help liking the FMC, even though he realizes she won’t be around after a few months when she goes home and they have an age gap. I love how she and her friend reconnect after the friends have a huge falling out. I’m suddenly craving vodka!! Get this book, you will love it!!
Awesome Rom/Com that brings you into a fictional twilighty type small town. So cute, characters are fun and engaging, the town is charming and quaint and I just want to live there!
If you start reading and really hate some of the characters, keep going, it will get better!! It's purposeful and makes sense as you really get into the story.
This is a sweet and spicy read. Absolutely loved reading it and cannot wait for the next in the series!! Highly recommend for my romcom buddies!!
Fangirl and the Grump took me back to when I first read and fell in love with a particular book series. It was so much fun to feel those things again. But more than that, the love story was engaging and entertaining. I was rooting for the couple the whole time and I loved the little quirks that made their relationship work. Every book by this author has kept me riveted and I am always left eager to read to next book she writes.
Premise: FMC goes to a super small town in the Pacific Northwest that was the setting of her favorite werewolf movie franchise and falls in love with MMC who is the grumpy owner of several rental properties (and who just so happens to look like a character from the movie franchise). Hijinks ensue. This book definitely tugged on my Twilight fangirl heartstrings in the best of ways. It was an enjoyable way to spend a morning.
Such a fun read! I was in a bit of a reading slump and this one had me grinning from ear to ear. Piper James never does something so simple as a typical grumpy sunshine would be. Instead Ms James created a whole town the reader wants to dive into. This is a HEA stand alone within a series (that is to come). The side characters are so great I can’t wait to read their stories too!
First book I’ve read by this author. I found it really cute and light hearted with a good amount of spice which is sometimes hard to find all together. I was so ready to binge the other two books and was sad to realize they are not out yet. I’ve put a reminder on my phone for the 2nd book release. Definitely, I suspect, a very fun series to read!
