Orishas Among Mortals #3

An Axe for a Hammer

Rate this book
What happens when the God of Thunder dies?

You blame his Orisha comrade, of course.

Thor of Asgard is dead. And Shango of the Orishas is to blame.

A cosmic war has been waged for countless ages between the deities of Earth and a strange force of shadows known as the God Eaters. Many of Earth’s greatest heroes have fallen to this mysterious enemy, but Thor and Shango have stood firm where other champions have failed.

Until now.

Dragged from the warfront, Shango is held in chains by the Court of All, interrogated over how Thor died under an Orisha’s watch.

Some deities claim foul play, others are charging Shango with negligence. But they all agree Shango’s abilities can no longer be trusted.

Shango is determined to prove his innocence and clear his name. There is no other option. If he fails, he’ll spend the rest of his days in the Dungeon of Deities… or worse.

Delve into this prequel novella to The Hero’s Equinox, a young adult fantasy based on the West African mythology of the Orishas.

ABOUT ME

ANTOINE BANDELE IS AN AMAZON BESTSELLING AUTHOR IN AFRICAN LITERATURE.

He lives in Los Angeles, CA with his girlfriend, where he produces work on YouTube for his own channel and others, such as JustKiddingFilms, Fanalysis, and more. During the summer he is a camp counselor. Whenever he has the time he’s writing his debut series: Tales from Esowon.

SINCE 1990 ...

I've been a creative kid, whether writing stories, drawing comics, or directing home movies. I remember the first time I thought I was a "published" author. My father took my brother and I to an office supply store, where we got our books (which were made out of wide-ruled notebook paper) laminated and copied.

It felt so legit.

In elementary school, I kept filling out more notebooks with my stories. I was even brave enough to share those stories with friends during recess. The underside of the playground slide became my own library, but the only inventory was my books. They were stories about kung fu fighting teenagers who were stuck in their own dreams (still might develop that one day), or fan fiction covering my favorite franchises.

Growing up in Los Angeles, only a few miles from Hollywood, I started flirting with the film industry. This became my focus throughout my young adult years. I majored in Multimedia at California State University Northridge (though my diploma is still incomplete). That eventually got me on YouTube which (for most filmmakers in those early days) was the best place to archive and share your work. YouTube has turned into a different beast today, but I still seek out that sense of community it had among like-minded individuals.

If there is one thing that encompasses my life so far, one theme, it would be the pursuit of art. Whether I'm writing, drawing, editing or otherwise (though I really wish I had a talent for music), I've always been drawn to crafting art. That's all I'm really about when it comes right down to the bare bones, everything stripped away. I'm fueled by creating make-believe, letting my imagination take me to wonderful worlds filled with characters who speak to my inner muse.

So join me here on my small corner of the internet (a bit of an upgrade to the underside of a playground). I want to share my creativity with you.

This book is set during the end of the book 2 and leading up to book 3 in the TJ Young and the Orishas series and it is following Orisha Shango and his trial for the death of a God.

I must say, I adore Shango and Thor's friendship, perfect Legolas and Gimli vibes, will gladly read whole book following their adventures together.

In this book the tone shifts to more serious and stakes are higher. TJ and co. know only part of the troubles awaiting them and I can't wait to see how it all comes together in the Hero's Equinox.

Thor, the God of Thunder, is dead. And it is his closest friend Shango who stands trial for Thor’s death. As Shango patiently waits for his innocence to be tested, he finds himself slipping into memories that connected him to Thor in the first place, including the moments that led him to his present circumstances. Despite coming from completely different pantheons, the two warriors found a kindred spirit in one another, and it is a bond that many would choose to deny in order to seek justice both for Thor and for themselves. This shorter addition to the canon of stories related to TJ Young and the Orishas reads quickly and manages to incorporate a great deal of global mythology into one succinct novel. Readers familiar with other books in this series will appreciate the ties and links that connect this novel to the others, but there is also enough of a foundation to welcome new readers into the mix. Though it primarily takes place in the walls of a courtroom, the narrative nonetheless includes a large amount of action and intrigue, which gives the novel good pacing overall. Readers familiar with the story of Thor will appreciate the interconnectedness of this book, especially as characters from many global cultures are represented alongside him. Using the character trait of hubris that seems to be ever present in the lives of the gods, this book transforms familiar tales into new, yet recognizable, forms. Additionally, a glossary and pronunciation guide are included to help guide readers to a better understanding of the series as a whole. This book is an enjoyable addition to its series, and it offers readers a bite-sized glimpse into just how large a world that of the Orishas and other gods can really be.

I did this one as an Audio book. This one was Longer than the other companion novellas and it actually a parallel novella to book 2. After I finished I replayed the last few chapters of book 2 to refresh my memory , however I wooo say he does a great job st the end reminding younif that happens and what’s coming up next. I actually really like that about this series.

Overall, this one was Not my favorite of the 3 novellas (that’s the wind weavers storm ) but I can see the importance and appreciate the foundation it laid as well as the clarification.

It tickled me every time the deities were trying to use modern day slang .

I also think Bandele did a great job describing f all the fight scenes. I don’t really care for this narrator on this one but it wasn’t bad by any means.

Overall, I still enjoy being brought into the world of TJ Young.

Thoughtful, fast-paced read

Orion's the youngest member of a space-faring crew of contractors who take on dangerous and not always legal jobs.

In this short story, she and the AI she has a unique relationship with face a moral dilemma that has repercussions for her, her crewmates, and her whole society.

Though full of great, well-rounded characters and thought-provoking problems, the story still manages to move quickly, with plenty of action in a believable setting.

It's a great introduction to this set of stories, and I'll be looking for more.

This is the third novel in the Orishas Among Mortals series. I have not read the first two in the series, but that was okey and I was able to follow the storyline without problem. I will say that I enjoyed the novel enough that I want to go back and read 1 and 2 then 3 and put it all together. An enjoyable read with plenty of action. I think you will find it enjoyable. I received this novel from BookFunnel. This is my true and honest opinion.

This is a great behind-the-scenes for the TJ Young and the Orishas series, with quite a bit of it happening during book 2 and leading directly into book 3.

I really enjoyed seeing the gods from so many religions/mythologies interacting here, and seeing what they've been doing away from the modern world.
