Pirate Ghosts & Buried Treasures of the Southeast Coast: A Historical Assessment on Pirate Folklore

Rate this book
Alleged adventures of rakish seafaring rogues and the skeletons they left behind!

Do you wish to uncover the secrets of pirate folklore and the mysteries of their buried treasure? If so, this is the perfect book for you. Written by pirate historian Captain Marrow, this book takes you on an exciting journey to reveal the truth behind the claimed tales that span from Florida's western panhandle to the Keys, up past the ancient city of St. Augustine, along the waters of Georgia and the Carolinas, and to the northernmost shores of Virginia's Chesapeake Bay. Legends such as those surrounding the likes of Jose Gaspar, Black Caesar, Billy Bowlegs, William Kidd, and of course the legendary Blackbeard.

Do pirates haunt St. Augustine's Castillo de San Marcos, and what of buried treasure just outside of Charleston? Hauntings on Ocracoke in the Outer Banks, and secreted away pirate gold along the James River of Virginia? This work explores these intriguing claims and many more!

This assessment on obscure southeastern pirate folklore presents a comprehensive compilation like no other before, with all tales beneath the intense scrutiny of historic fact and seperating truth from fiction. Unearthed from depositions dating to the days of piracy, modern accounts, and newspapers stretching between, no stone is left unturned by pirate historian Captain Marrow in "Pirate Ghosts & Buried Treasures of the Southeast Coast."

Pirate myths, history, and unintended travel guide.

An interesting collection that shows the great similarities among various pirate tales. The book is divided into three sections: general discussion on pirates and buried treasure, biographical sketches of several pirates, and tales associated with those pirates. The latter is further divided into tales by state. Starting in the Florida panhandle, the author takes the reader on a trip along the coastlines of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia. In addition to history, I learned about places I’d never heard of, but which I’m now interesting in visiting, many of which are protected by state and federal laws.

The tales are short and well-structured. The author starts out by relating the tale. He then provides the reader with his opinion as to the veracity of the myth based on his research. Instead of using footnotes, he ends with a list of his sources.

I read the Kindle version. There are formatting issues as there often are in digital media. I’m accustomed to that, so it didn’t bother me. I appreciate a list of courses but would have liked to have seen more contemporary sources used as reference.

Interesting collection of pirate lore. If you can get past the verbosity of the author, and the grammatical errors, you might enjoy this. Lots of comma splices where a period would work better. His editor should have done better. Also, half of the book was about Florida's coastal history of pirates and buried treasure. And there was a whole chapter on who Blackbeard might, or might not be. Overall, 2 stars. It could have been executed a lot better.
