Trollkin Lovers #4

Charming the Troll's Heart

Rate this book
Stolen from her bed in the middle of the night, Rimi is shipped across the ocean to a strange land and kept in a cage like an animal. She's almost given up hope for escape when a good-natured, roguish troll is assigned to be her new caretaker.

Lo'zar is a petty criminal, smuggling illicit goods from one place to another while enjoying his life as a carefree player. But when he's tasked with transporting a human woman to a buyer, he wonders if he's really doing the right thing.

As Lo'zar grows fond of the clever, sweet Rimi, he knows he has to help her—even if freeing her means putting his life on the line. Can they survive the dangers of the jungle together and get Rimi back home?

This is a super steamy, standalone novel (50k words) that takes place in the Trollkin Lovers universe, and incorporates characters from previous books, but can be read alone.

This one didn’t land for me

😬😬 I really had to push through this one. Which is a surprise because I really love this author and their other books!

The MMC was just kinda gross throughout the entire book. He behaved like a teenage boy the majority of the time. There were a few redeeming moments but not enough.

The pacing was super inconsistent and the story just didn’t come together.

Im a sucker for language barrier and captive MCs, so this was right up my alley. Lo’zar had that whole morally grey thing going on and was such a softie with Rimi. Rimi was just the right mix of soft and fierce. She could stand up for herself and be a bad bitch when called for, but was also sweet as sugar with Lo’zar. I’m enjoying the Trollkin world and all the hatred between humans and trollkin because it adds some enemies to lovers vibes to each book.

Spice: 4.5/5

Triggers: Abduction and trafficking, Captive FMC Neglect and abuse, suicidal ideation, Moderate violence, On-page death (by gun and sword), Claustrophobia, Crime/thieving/smuggling, SA (brief groping), Drug use (off-page), Animal death, Pregnancy, Birth

Each one of Riley’s characters has such a different feel. As I’m reading, I can feel the different mind frame and tone of the character, like I’m seeing through their eyes and thinking their thoughts in my own head. Argh, I just love the Trollkin series. It’s crack; and I don’t even do drugs.

I feel like I say this every time but THIS MMC is my favorite. Lo’zar is a thief and a rouge but when he meets Rimi, he has a total change of heart. He rescues her, cares for her, and eventually falls in love with her. Their adventure was my favorite yet- so full of action and mystery. The FMC is no Telise but still brave and brilliant- I loved her. She meets him action for action and although she is a damsel in distress, it never reads like that.

Also I love the extended epilogues she puts in every book. It’s been the perfect closer for every book in the Trollkin series thus far, so keep them coming!

*I received an ARC of this book. Opinions are my own*

"I will always be with you", he says, cupping my face in one hand as he continues his progress deeper and deeper inside me. "Even when we're apart, you will be the first thing on my mind when I wake up every day, and the last thought I have when I go to sleep."

Every time I read a book from this series I think that they couldn't possibly get any better. But they do! I loved every part of this story and how the books in this series are all connected.

Lo'zar is definitely my favorite! He's so sweet and protective of Rimi. The romance was charming and adorable and the spice was very nice. There was action, some plot twists, and HEA!

And as I usually do I got a soft spot for a side character. Graz was so fun to read. He had me cracking up!

Is it too much to ask for this series to go on forever?

I adore the Trollkin Lovers series and this fourth installment is my favorite so far! The romance is incredibly sweet. The characters are adorable and hilarious.

Rimi is a human that comes from a foreign land across the sea where trollkin are nothing more than ancient legends. Lo’zar is a troll and a member of the criminal underground of the largest trollkin city, Kalishagg. Their meeting seems impossible with an ocean between them, but when Rimi is kidnapped from home to be sold to a buyer in the trollkin lands, Lo’zar is the smuggler assigned to transport her. Will he remain loyal to his criminal clan and follow through on selling her off? Or will he follow his heart and not only free this mysterious human, but escort her safely home?

The story is fast-paced and interesting with plot twists that I did not see coming. I definitely think we get a deeper glimpse into the trollkin way of life in this installment more than any of the others. I love the conversations and interactions between the characters. The happily ever after is so wonderful and perfect.

Lo’zar is a thief from the streets with a heart of gold. He is so soft and gentle with Rimi that it warms my heart. I love his playful, feisty spirit that can both tease and comfort at the right times. Despite being small and not all that physically strong, Rimi has a brave heart that carries her through her intense struggles while maintaining a positive outlook on life. She has such a kind and loving personality that truly brings out the best in Lo’zar.

I adore this couple and I hope that we get the chance to see more of them in background of further books in this series! I would also be very much interested in a story from Graz’s perspective. He is such an intriguing side character and he yearns for his own happily ever after.

GAAAAAAH MY FAVORITE IN THE TROLLKIN LOVERS SERIES YET!

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝:
💜 I love a good captor/captee romance, especially when it’s really a savior/savee (?) romance!

💜 Lo'zar was the perfect book boyfriend! He was sweet and patient, yet dirty and deviant in the best ways possible. He was always looking to protect his mate and how to make things easier for her in even the most personally heinous situations. He was PERFECTION! Definitely my favorite Trollkin Lovers MMC to date!

💜 Again, I would be remiss to mention in my review how much I loved that Rimi was nothing like Nera from book 2 or Telise from book 1. If you read my review of Healing the Orc’s Heart
you know how much I loved both of these previous ladies and how different they were and how I dug that. Rimi is no exception! She is funny in a way we didn’t see with our first two FMCs, and she has a musical talent that made for a fun component of the story. She is not a street-smart battler like Telise, nor is she a healer like Nera; she is a princess. While being previously very sheltered, she adapts quickly and shows that she is very clever in the process. I absolutely loved this for her character development.

💜 While I liked seeing Telise and Raz'jin show up in Nera’s and Blizzek's book, I liked that we had moved on from including the couples in future books. We don’t want this to become Star Wars where we can’t make anything that isn’t tied to the Skywalker family, and this was a great time to make the break.

💜 I feel like each installment of this series gets better and better in terms of pacing, plot, and “playtime”. This book was so fast-paced and had so much adventure in it that the pages went by so quickly! I loved the adventure-style of this one, as well as all the spicy times we got. Such a great installment.

💜 Also, I don’t know if it’s just me and a long suppressed George of the Jungle / Tarzan fantasy, but is that cover totally giving you all George of the Jungle / Tarzan feels???

4.5 Stars!

This was the most fun of the Trollkin Series so far! It was like a mini jungle adventure, and it was great. Lo'zar was so cute and cocky. I loved him immediately, but I love how he was willing to give up everything for Rimi (Ree-Mee♥). The world lore in this book! I want to know more! I hope we get to find out more about the things we discover in the next books of the series. It definitely makes me feel invested in the story and plot. ( I am trying not to give any spoilers!)
I was so heartbroken for everything Rimi went through. I loved her; I thought that, given everything, she was actually really strong and brave. She opened up and gave her heart and trust to Lo'zar; they were perfect. I hope that in later books, we get more glimpses of this sweet family. Another super fun cozy adventure, I am just obsessed with this series.

This book tore my heart into pieces and put it back together in the best ways. What an emotional and beautiful ride this was that had the best HEA.

Rimi has lived a sheltered life, until she’s kidnapped and taken very far from home. She’s endured some truly horrific things in her captivity, treated less than an animal. Lo’zar is a thief and a good one, working for a crime boss that you definitely don’t want to cross. When he sees Rimi, and is tasked with delivering her to her buyer, it goes against everything he morally believes, and the more he gets to know her, the more he knows he can’t leave her to her fate.

These two were so freaking sweet to each other and the love and care they had for each other just jumped off the page and into my heart. Lo’zar is so kind and gentle to a fearful and abused Rimi, and despite all that Rimi has been through, she knows this troll is different and good. They both have an innocence about them that just makes them so heart meltingly sweet to read. It truly turns into a partnership between these two, and man what a love story they have. If you’re looking for romance with two kind people at their core, who were dealt a difficult hand, but are determined to protect each other no matter the cost, this is definitely it. I loved it and highly recommend picking this novella up.

This was quite cute, but as well as the earlier books, there was just something I didn't enjoy that much that I couldn't place. I liked this book more due to the plot and the two mc’s discovery. 3.5 stars

I've waited on that book for some time now. (like it was on my TBR until well not too long ago).

I'm on a monster-romance kick and thought I'd read it. And I was kinda appalled?
(I know, I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover but to be fair, I liked the cover AND the description of it, so HA!)

But you know what's happened to this one? The usual "can't communicate 'cause from two different worlds" and I quite liked those scenes. They were cute and nice.

But then the MCs got to communicate via a minlink because they ATE a DECREPEIT WORM. What in the sweet baby Jesus was that???

They start communicating only to talk about the danger they are in (which, ok, fair) and "hot" words exchanged during sex. There's no talking between them about themselves, childhood, and anything really. I was not picky, I just wanted them to BOND to show that they were falling in love and just have the fated mate excuse to excuse the lack of real bonding between the two MCs.

And the cherry on top of the shit cake was that the FMC went back to her world (she described her parents as being unloving unlike MMC) and STILL went back on a journey across the sea that took (I'm guessing weeks or months because they were no indication of it, but it was described as long) only to realise that her parents are bigger assholes that she thought they were AND IMMEDIATELY go back across the sea to go back to the MMC's country. And I just could not with this book. I hate, hate a 3d act breakup, but the reason why I hate them most is that they're dumb AF like she should have taken one day to realise that she should have stayed in the MMC's country but noooo.

So yeah, not good. Do NOT recommand.

Hands down my new favorite and I literally just said that when I read Enchanting the Ogre’s Heart. This one had one of my favorite tropes (captor to lover) and nobody come for me but it was done so well. I loved seeing Lo’zar gradually win Rimi’s trust through his kindness and care towards her, and then their journey fighting for freedom while also slowly realizing the depth of their feelings for each other? Ugh so good. The spice is delicious as always, and in true Lyonne fashion there is a wonderful blend of angst, heart, and humor.

Charming The Troll’s Heart is the fourth book in the Trollkin Lovers series. This book spins off of the previous one by following a side character! His adventure and saving of a human takes you on a magical adventure! I give this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!

It was fun to see a story about Lo’zar. He made a brief appearance in Capturing the Orc’s Heart. He’s such a sweet and kind troll, regardless of being a thief and criminal. He’s exudes pure goodness.

Rimi is so strong! Even after being kidnapped and treated like scum, she’s still hopeful she can escape and get back home. She fears Lo’zar, but has a feeling deep down she can trust him. They build up a strong connection even before they can communicate and it’s really sweet to watch!

Also, all the magic of the ruins and WORMS?! It’s so creative! I won’t spoil anything, but their romp through the jungle is so much fun!!! When they’re navigating the tunnels in the ruins I couldn’t help but sing the secret tunnel song from Avatar 😂.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 4.25,🌶️🌶️🌶️

I have read all the other books in this series and have loved every single one of them but this one has been my favorite!
This is my first ARC for this series.

I love how charming and caring Lo’zar was to Rimi. The adventure of them going through the jungle made it a really fun read. I feel like seeing him fall first for Rimi was my favorite part. Also I’m a sucker for a language barrier trope so it was a cool seeing how they were finally able to understand each other. The spice in this book was amazing, Lyonne always does a great job at giving me the spiciest scenes🤭💘.

I LOVED THIS BOOK!!

Just wanted to start my review by saying that! It was a story filled with wholesome romance (albeit a bit forbidden), fated mates, humour, spice and Indiana Jones vibes — just with a ruggedly handsome troll instead.

I haven’t actually read any of the previous ‘Trollkin Lovers’ series but this can very much be read as a standalone and be thoroughly enjoyed as it is (though after reading this book I WILL be reading the rest of the series because I’m sure they will be equally as fantastic!)

The world building was lovely and not too overwhelming for the size of the novel and I fell in love with the two main characters. It was very enjoyable to read and was a perfect story to sit down and devour in a few sittings!

The romance was really goddamn sweet and also sprinkled with some REALLY lovely spice — that’s on the softer/gentler side but that doesn’t mean it’s any less hot!

There are a few triggers that I will mention below, and you can find more triggers (that I, personally, didn’t list) on the authors trigger/content warning page. In regards to the pregnancy/birth/child triggers, as I know those elements aren’t for everyone — they only happen in the very last chapter so you can enjoy the whole book without having that experience if it isn’t quite your cup of tea.

- Abduction/kidnapping
- Trafficking
- Claustrophobia
- Violence (blood and death)

“Charming the Troll’s Heart” was a BEAUTIFUL novel that I thoroughly enjoyed and would highly recommend it for anyone who loves romance of forbidden but fated mates, adventure that’s Indiana Jone’s-esque in nature, soft spice filled with love and sprinkled with lighthearted humour. 5/5 Stars!!

I'd like to thank Lyonne Riley for this early copy of Charming the Troll's Heart and I promise my review is voluntary and honest

This book hit me a lot harder than the previous books in this series did. This book is a little more heavier, but it is still such a phenomenal read. I truly felt like I was on the run with Lo'Zar and Rimi. I felt their pain and love for each other throughout the book. It was truly beautiful. I can't put into words how this book left me feeling by the end of it, but I enjoyed every minute of it.

Well this purple-blue troll charmed my heart 💜💙

This novella is a wild adventure with Indiana Jones vibes, spicy cave scenes, and one unexpectedly soft-hearted troll. Lo’zar starts off rough (chapter one… yikes), but stick with it—he’s cheeky, and says “Ree-mee” in a way that melts the soul.

It’s a low-brainpower kind of read with a surprisingly tender romance where actions speak louder than words. That third act tested my patience, but the payoff made it worth the ride.

It's missing what makes this series unique - the language barrier and unconventional approach to sex. Previous books often had a mention about the main characters having sex with other people but they were not or are not in a relationship. And I like that. They talk it out and don't blame each other.
Otherwise, this book still has great writing and a full fantasy story.

Title: Charming the Trolls Heart
Author: Lyonne Riley
Genre: Monster
Spice: 🥵 yes
Series: Trollkin Lovers, book 4

Thoughts - its sweet, emotional and at times just wanted to given them both a cuddle. Lo’zar MMC is so patient and kind during every interaction with Rimi MFC, and then you add the whole captive/kidnapper aspect. Ughhh it was so good!! Special mention to the end!!! Lot was way more emotional than I expected. Definitely recommend read.

Plot - kidnapped in the night, Rimi finds herself in the middle of a strange land surrounded by Trolkins and she’s scared of what the future may bring. That is until the person she least expects to starts to show her kindness… and maybe something else too.

Ahhhhh please this was such a cute read 😭 the book had me grinning throughout 😭

The two MCs had such a sweet connection, and there were these CUTE AF scenes where they made music together by tapping their hands and jewellery 😭 this was truly the highlight of the book for me

Also, the adventures they had while escaping, and the third act gesture of saving the FMC were >>>>>

The hea was so cute, ugh <3333

TWs - violence, kidnapping (FMC was kidnapped by a gang the MMC was working for, and the MMC gets her out), death

4.5 right off the bat, the only reason I'm (technically) giving this 4.5 is because Capturing the Orc's Heart is still my top favorite, and I loved this one just ever so slightly less than that one lol.

This one is a little heavy in the beginning, because out the gate we're dealing with a human trafficking type of situation, and our FMC Rimi, really does experience a ton of trauma. She's been kidnapped, caged like an animal, and treated horribly by her captors who are planning on shipping her off to be sold off.

Lo'zar, our MMC is a big burly troll who is tasked with taking over as Rimi's caretaker and transporting her to a buyer. He experiences this internal battle with this job and is compelled to help poor Rimi rather than contribute to her trauma further. Eventually, he wonders if he should abandon his task altogether, and help her escape.

He decides to make a run for it with her, risking his entire future, all because he feels this pull to her that he can't explain nor understand. They head out through the jungle and throughout their journey, they fall in love. The only catch is, Rimi is human and Lo'zar is now a wanted man, so they can't exactly run off in the sunset together--so they're challenged with deciding what to do about their futures, and what that means for their love.

Lyonne just doesn't miss! I'd read a 500 page novel set in this world, easily! But I'm happy to continue eating up these novellas because they're so satisfying! If you are a monster romance lover and haven't picked up any of the books in this series, definitely do it soon! Can't recommend this author and this series enough!!

Thanks to the author for kindly providing an ARC in exchange for my honest review!

⭐ Rating: 3.5/5
🔥 Spice: 2.5/5

Okay, this one went in a direction I wasn’t quite expecting. The series is definitely getting a little darker with each installment—not dark dark, but darker than the previous ones. Just a heads-up: the FMC spends a good chunk of the beginning as a prisoner/slave and is treated more like a pet than a person. While it’s not overly graphic, the emotional and situational implications are there. Please check your trigger warnings before diving in.

That aside, I still enjoyed this book, though it’s not my favorite of the series. I felt like there was a lot of potential for depth, especially in the way the relationship develops. It moved quickly, and while I’ve come to expect a certain formula from this series, I was hoping for a bit more slow burn here—especially considering the captor/captive start.

Biggest gripe? The communication arc. The magic fix to the language barrier felt like a shortcut. In previous books, learning each other’s language was symbolic—it showed commitment, trust, and care. Here, it skipped that emotional journey, and I felt like we missed out on a major opportunity for connection and character growth. Yes, they saw each other beyond the captor/prisoner dynamic, but I wanted more work put into dismantling that tension and building something stronger.

That said, I did love how the ending made sense. It felt earned. The resolution of the plot was satisfying even if the relationship pacing wasn’t totally believable. I’m never a huge fan of “lack of communication for plot reasons,” and there was a bit of that here too, which bumped it down slightly for me.

What I really loved was the expansion of world-building. We finally got more context around this universe—especially the callback to the cave drawings from Capturing the Orc’s Heart. That was such a cool tie-in and made me excited to keep going just to see how it all unfolds.

And yes… the smut. If you’re here for the breeding kink, you will not be disappointed. The commitment. The obsession. The down bad energy. I personally had to suspend a little disbelief around her being so into someone who had so recently been her captor, but hey—that’s fantasy for you.

Overall: Lower on my ranking for this series, but still enjoyable. The world continues to draw me in, and I love that every book builds on the last. If you’re okay with a faster-paced emotional arc and the tropes I mentioned, it’s still a worthy entry.

~ STORY 📝 ~

After a life of crimes, Lo'zar's new assignment is to guard a little human in a cage. As he gets to watch over her he knows he needs to free her, even if saving her means losing everything he ever worked for and maybe getting killed for it.

Rimi had her life forever altered when she was abducted in the middle of the night to be caged and mistreated by scary Trollkins but her new guard is not like the others. He's kind and will give her what she never had or given before.

Together, they'll need to figure out a way to survive.

Man, did I love this story. I was happy with them, scared with them, in love with them. They're so sweet both as individuals and as a couple. 🥰

Also, even tho it's action-packed, it felt kinda cozy too?

I don't know how to explain because, yes, there's angst, but also how cute and enamored they are just got me purring all along. 😂🤷🏽‍♀️

A few things are unanswered in this book but I have a feeling they will be in the next one, maybe in a story featuring Graz? 😏

~ SPICE 🌶️ ~

Smut comes fast enough in the story and is steady throughout the book even tho some are less explicit than others.

Most of the spice comes from the attraction and the need between Rimi & Lo'zar, so I guess the level of spice depends on how much you feel the connection between them? But for me, it's a strong 3.0 at least.

No special kinks, just 2 fated mates discovering how well they fit together 😉🔥

I received this title as an ARC from the author in exchange for a honest review. Thank you for the copy!

I cannot get enough of this series!

After the events of the previous book, Lo'Zar returns to his clan is assigned a new job - aid in the transfer of a human woman to her buyer. Lo'Zar is used to smuggling and other crimes but this feels wrong even to him. Rimi was snatched from her house across the sea and finds herself at the mercy of unkind trollkin who treat her like an animal and facing a fate much worse when if she reaches her buyers. Lo'Zar and Rimi begin to bond on his way and freeing her means he will have to give up everything his has and surviving the harsh jungle...

The Good
This book was so fun! It was as action packed as the cover suggests and dives into a lot of new aspects of world-building and lore that we haven't seen so far in the series. I really liked the expansion of the world (literally) and seeing the new trials couples would face now that the war was over. Lo'zar and Rimi were another great pair. The language barrier was solved in a very new and interesting way this time. Their journey was different than previous couple but so fun.

Tropes:
— Forbidden Love
— Language Barrier
— Troll MMC

Horn Level: 4/5🌶️

The Rating
I give this book a 5/5🌟 rating. I love this series so much! It's amazing how each book delivers more and more!!

Lo’zar, the male troll thief/criminal lead, is shocked to find himself assigned the low value job of guarding a human who his group are delivering to a buyer. When he sees her, he’s shocked again - he doesn’t find her ugly, as he has found other humans before her.

Rimi, the female human noble lead, was abducted from her bed, shoved in a crate, transported over the sea, and finally shoved in a cage being tormented by trolls and travelling somewhere. She’s shocked to see a troll who doesn’t look at her with disgust.

As they travel, Lo’zar feels drawn to help Rimi, and steals her away, only to end up running from a group of feral trolls into an ancient temple where they find magic that allows them to communicate. Now they just need to get away from Lo’zar’s (ex-)employer, find passage to Rimi’s home, and work out what they’re really feeling and whether it even matters…

This story is dual POV, well written and edited, and a cute and steamy fantasy, adventure romance. I enjoyed the challenge of the language barrier and was amused by the solution the author created. I enjoyed the character and relationship development, where one facilitated the other. I enjoyed the intimate scenes. I enjoyed the world and the background characters. I enjoyed the final resolution. I appreciate that the cuteness of the cover is indicative of the story - absolutely adorable.

I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.

Lyonne Riley did it again! The challenge of writing a story with a language barrier is to connect characters without verbal communication. Just when I thought it was the usual language barrier romance?!, ha! the twist she threw out there was something I didn't see coming. Lyonne Riley magically weaved the gap.😉

What caught my attention in Lo'zar's character is his consistent admiration for Rimi, whether it's her smile, musical rhythm, courage, swimming skills, kindness, determination, her scent, her taste, her c🤫🤭t. Everything about her, be it a small gesture or her feature...Full course admiration.

Rimi, a resilient character, has faced hardships but maintains a positive outlook, displaying both fear and bravery , which takes a lot of courage. I love her.

I felt their chemistry. These two fit perfectly with each other - be it in terms of their attraction, humour, and outlook on life. Just perfect!

I've read the first three books, and each story stands out, but this one is my favourite so far - the element of magic and mystery that might be unravelled in the next book, maybe?🤔

My favourite part about all of this is the absence of any dragging or beating around the bush. The entire book is as exciting and thrilling as Rimi and Lo'zar's romance. And, of course, Riley loves to give her characters and readers the happy ever after we all deserve. Aaaaand I found some tender loving quotes that's worth keeping.💞

It has become one of my favorite Trolls stories, it is the perfect mix of cute and spice. Lo'zar captivated my heart, so sweet, and protective over Rimi is such a cinnamon roll. Rimi is adorable in every way, with a talent for music above all she protects her Lo'zar at all costs. This couple has great chemistry, I loved the captive and captor plot, I felt like their Lo'zar was Tarzan every time he jumped off the vine. They are a beautiful couple, they complement each other at all times, and despite the differences they have for each other, they manage to overcome everything.

This romance made me feel so many things, as much as moments that made my heart melt from so much love, laughing, and blushing at the spice scenes. I loved every page of it, this book has it all, I loved the way it developed the language barrier, it was brilliant and different. The plot twist near the end of the story I didn't expect was precise in the way it was implemented.

The ending made me smile and get excited like a fan girl. Lyonne Riley is the first of your books I read but from now on I will read them all and catch up on this fabulous Trollkin Lovers saga.

I received this ARC in exchange for my humble opinion.

Lo’zar has done a ton of terrible things in his life. A criminal through and through but has finally been given an assignment he starts to question his morals. Escorting a small human woman Rimi to her buyer. Rimi was taken from her bed in the middle of the night and has been abused ever since she left her country.

Every book progressively gets better in this series 😂 Lo’zar is an adorable cinnamon roll thug who is just so loyal and protective of Rimi. He will do anything to ensure her happiness, including giving her up. Rimi has an amazing character growth considering this book is pretty short. Their chemistry is undeniable and they stubble their way through their romance with the assistance of magical worms of course 🤷🏻‍♀️ because how else would any romance work?
