"It's your job. You kill who I tell you, when I tell you."
The Belladonna is a shadow; an assassin who leaves purple-black berries on the bodies of her victims. No one knows her name, or her face.
Piper is desperate to keep it that way.
When an assignment goes spectacularly wrong, Piper's carefully separated lives begin to converge. Her target becomes a reluctant ally as they search for clues to the disappearances haunting the city of Silversdale; disappearances that include Piper's close friend, and a member of the empire's ruling family.
With two children in her care and time running out before she is due to deliver on her contract, Piper will soon find she has only scratched the surface of a plot that threatens everything she holds dear.
TF Johnson spends her days in imaginary worlds swordfighting, defeating monsters, and talking with dragons.
TF Johnson has a degree in Interior Design, which she has never used, is addicted to chocolate and coffee, and would spend her days with her head in the clouds if she had the choice. She has an incredibly understanding husband and an English Bulldog who is the best writing companion ever – Even if she does have a habit of putting her head on the keyboard and leaving it there.
In her spare time, TF Johnson collects books to read, which is a completely different hobby to actually reading them. She has 173 books on her to-read shelf, a number which is steadily growing.
When she’s not reading or writing, TF Johnson can be found trying out new hobbies and spending time with her friends and family.
I would call this cosy fantasy with a side of definitely-not-cosy.
We're starting with an assassin (hello, my weakness) who is working for an A-grade A-hole. So when he tasks her with a job inside the palace, she doesn't really have a choice despite her gut going against it.
Unfortunately, the job has consequences that soon lead to her searching the city for a lost friend with a mage in tow. She still plans to kill him, and he's probably still holding a grudge, but somehow they have to work together. While Piper (our assassin) also has to care for the two kids of her missing friend.
So, look. There is a lot of detail in taking care of the kids, which tbh is not really my vibe. But I didn't mind it so much here because there was enough magic and strange things happening in the background to hold my interest. Plus, taking care of the kids was a huge part of Piper's character so I just went with it and it is the main factor that gives this fantasy book its 'cosy' vibe. I mean, there are scenes of lounging around doing homework, and drinking hot chocolate. Nothing says cosy like a ho cho.
Still, it is a fantasy story so there is magic and strange creatures and villains and fight scenes and basically plenty of action to keep things interesting. Things get pretty intense with some of the fights, but on the whole it never gets too dark.
It's all set in the same city, so there's no real grand adventure here. It's actually quite modern, with trams for public transport, pubs that serve burgers and chips, and indoor plumbing. It threw me at first, to be honest! It does get a little repetitive at times, with Piper and Alec on the streets, then at home with the kids, then wandering the streets again ... but I never really felt bored by it so there was enough happening that it never became a pattern.
I did get a little confused with the Rylan/Alec/Alexander business - Piper had been hanging out with Rylan, and then all of a sudden this Alec guy was in her doorway and making eyes and things and I literally went flicking back trying to figure out who Alec was (it's the same guy). So there were some clunky moments like that in the writing where it seemed to just want something to happen so forced it out. This lead to some confusing moments that did take me out of the story a bit.
It was a very chill vibe for a fantasy novel about an assassin, but there was still enough here to build a connection to. It wasn't what I expected at all, but I found the cosy vibe actually really worked for me.
I don't know that this'll be for everyone, but fans of slower, calmer kinds of fantasy should still enjoy it, and Piper is an interesting protagonist. I'd recommend it for fantasy fans looking for something a little more mild, and different to the norm.
Was lucky enough to get a copy signed by the author at Supanova 2025. Happy. :)
This was a pretty solid read, there were certainly elements I enjoyed about it. I do find the "fantasy assassin" trope a little tired but I thought the rest of the premise was enough to get me interested. And generally it was an enjoyable read. I think there were a few things that I would have liked to see a little tidier? I'm not sure if this is a newer author, but there were some aspects that felt a little rough or unpolished, some mistakes I felt would get tidied up with more experience.
For me, the biggest of these was the world building. I think maybe the "show don't tell" message was taken a little too far - things were dropped into conversation or mentioned in the narrative and never explained at all, including references to fantasy creatures I had no idea what they were. If your metaphor is something like "scuttled forward like a tseon" I need to know what a tseon looks like for the metaphor to work - and since we've never met this creature in the story or had it described to us, there's no way to know what I'm supposed to be visualising. There was a fair bit of that, with characters mentioning or thinking about aspects of the world that have never been mentioned or described before. Some of this eventually became a little clearer as the book went on - the relationship of these "Immortals" - who I think are sort of a patheon but aren't actual gods? to the world is vague, but there are pieces starting to get dropped that makes me more confident this will be explored more later, but there are other aspects that just aren't clear. Picking up this book felt like the author really just expected the audience to keep up. I don't like being patronised in books, but sometimes you do need to do a bit of legwork for your audience so they aren't spending your whole story working out the worldbuilding rather than worrying about your story.
I found some of the dialogue a little jarring as well - this might be a personal preference but I can't stand romantic partners using "baby" for each other in Fantasy. I find it soooo jarring and it pulls me right out of the story, and on the same note, something about the way Piper called Madelyn "baby girl" all the time also rankled me a bit.
For all that, the pacing is fairly good, and the story moves on at a decent clip. I don't hate either of the main characters, which seems like a low bar to clear but recently this is an issue I've struggled a lot with (I'm looking at you Feyre). I can see the relationship developing between Alec and Piper, and it is a satisfyingly slow burn so props to that.
I think the mystery could have been a bit better developed - there weren't quite enough clues and putting of things together for my liking, everyone got the information they needed a bit too easily.
Still, this was a decent read even if it didn't really blow my socks off. I will read the next one.
It's been a while since a book had me hooked like this one. I finished it in less than a day. I was captivated by the unique setting of this book, where TF Johnson, an Australian author, skillfully blended elements of Melbourne like trams and coffee into the fictional world. The imaginative incorporation of these details painted a vivid picture of a slightly gritty, steampunk-inspired dystopia... a quirky society - I love it!
Piper's journey was absolutely enthralling. As her narrative unfolded, I found myself deeply connecting with her character, understanding her profession, emotions, and the challenges she faced in her field thriving in a richly imagined world that blends reality with fantasy. This debut is gripping, leaving you excited for the next chapter. Additionally, the touch of magic and the charming Alec only enhance the allure.
The narrative development was excellent and left me craving more. I am eagerly anticipating TF Johnson's future works and will wholeheartedly support every step of the way.
full discretion - i read this for work (i do content pulls and work at haus of fables).
THIS WAS BANGER!! So slept on. I had such a fun time reading this. I didn’t know what was going on, i still have no idea what’s going on. But i never felt CONFUSED - not from the magic or the world building. I’m going to continue this series because wow did we leave on a big sad moment lol. But i genuinely enjoyed the crap out of this.
And we have a slow burn romance!!! And i mean slowwwee burn. As in, nothing happened… but something is happening and when it does!!! EEEE.
I’ll do a full review for this when I’m finished doing my actual job for the book but ya gotta add this to your TBR
This book had me hooked from start to finish. I love when an author blends together fantasy and mystery (and if there is romance...you hit my trifecta).
After a failed unaliving attempt, Piper and Alexander work together to discover why each of their friends has gone missing. The more they look into the matter, the deep they sink into a much darker plot of power and loss.
I love Piper as a our assassin FMC. While her job should leave her emotionless, you can see the toll it leaves on her. She is left with little choice but to carry out these crimes, despite her challenges to the contrary. She does lack an ability to trust given her past experiences, but Johnson does a great job of showing her vulnerable side through her relationship with Abby (her friend who goes missing), and Abby's children, whom she protects, as well as her other friend Beka.
Her relationship with Alexander/Alec is a bit more fraught with mistrust and you know that who unaliving business. It is fun to watch them interact and slowly start to work together. Now, there is a slowwwwww burn on this one, friends. Do not expect them to give wistful looks or comments. They are focused on finding their friends -- nothing more. And it truly works for this story.
Alexander -- as a character -- is a bit more sunshine to Piper's grumpy. He is fun because you get to read into alot about his character's feeling through Piper's eyes. I am can't wait to see more of him as a character.
While the characters' growth and flaws are on display, the plot drives this story along at times at a fast paced speed. The investigation leads the reader with a feeling of more to come by the end. There is definitely a much deeper, larger plot going on within this world.
I've already downloaded book two and am ready to see where this all leads next!
Okay firstly can we talk about how GORGEOUS these book are Like Okg prettiest books I own But Also The plot The characters Ugh Obsessed This book has been CAPTIREDDDD like omg I knew I would want to binge read the trilogy so I’ve been waiting for the third one to come out (which I received an arc for IM FANGIRLING OMG) Like this had all the elements I loved Assassins Forced proximity Hint of mystery A murderer on the loose What more can a girl ask for AND YET THERE WAS MORE mages Elf’s Healers Royals UGHHH IN LIVE the next one is going to be so good I know it Anyways.
I want to get this out of the way Reasons it wasn’t five stars: okay legit there wasn’t many but I’m a little picky with books Legit my only main critique was it started off a little slow and didn’t hook me from the very start And maybe a few small things along the way But other then that As I said Hooked Okay
PLOT okay so we start with piper, who is an assassin knwo as the belladonna On a “hunt” Aka she is killing someone And she does But then the next day when she goes to collect payment, her ‘master’, also known as lore, forces her to take on another task That grants an insane amount of money… because it needs to be done tonight and to someone who lives in the palace So that night She breaks into the palace And then she kills this person Or she thought she did Because the next day She goes back to lord requesting payment And she finds out He didn’t die And she needs to kill him or else However that same night, she goes to visit her friend Abby And sees that Abby isn’t there The house has been torn apart And the kids are alone Abby is quite literally Gone So she takes the two kids, Madelyn and caleb And then decides she needs to find the mum But for the first night she has the kids She doesn’t hunt She just calms them etc And then the next night, because her apartment is too small, she goes to rent a room elsewhere And there she encounters the man she tried to kill Aka blackcoat rylan Or as we know him, Alec And he is here because he thinks she has a connection to the disappearance of the prince, jai But when he figures she doesn’t They begrudgingly work together to fund the two. First they go to Abby’s house See a trap set by a mage Then they are sorta at a dead end Until piper has a friend (who is the alchemist, aka Madelyn’s dad, aka massive crime lord) who gives her information about missing kids There is a pattern They went missing in a circle And in the middle of the circle is a building Which the two go to explore While there they get attacked by these man eating beasts And also find runes and a hidden… alcove I guess And I’m there there is cages and a kid This kid has been drained of his magic. And then he also tells us that the prince (jai) and Abby were here but recently left But then when they leave Piper like Almost dies So alec rushes her bakc and gets her healed by the high lady And she is all god The kids are in the castle Then they all leave Whatever No issues Except there is Because she has a meeting with the alchemist Which she goes to And beks (Abby’s next door neighbour, also known as the princess) shows up And so does alec So they all sorta go together While there we find out Lore is the one who took the prince And that Piper needs to kill him So we go do just that They fond the building They get in But then (cause piper is alone) she gets hot on the head Unconscious Boom And then she is transported to a room Tied to a chair And jai, Abby, lore, Saxe (another assassin) and this demon immortal thing and a mage are there The immortal wants piper For what I’m not entirely sure I think it’s cause her illis (magic identifier thing) is strong And she can help him raise the dead yeah But then Alec (being the cunty queen he is) Went to go find backup He brings police And they capture them But lord and the immortal escape And piper almost gets sent to prison However first we stop at the castle And everything is explained to the high lord and lady And then the investigating will probably continue
CHRACTERA
PIPER okay I know she is an assassin But she has a moral compass, she was simply forced to do things because she couldn’t escape lore without death She was an amazing lead character She was incredibly strong, but she still felt weak at times She still had emotions Like she lived those kids with her life And that’s so cute And honestly I think it stems from her troublesome upbringing. She lives kids And also I really enjoyed how she didn’t trust people striaght away I feel like I see it so often when characters will automatically trust each other But no She didn’t trust Alec We got to like go down the path with her whole she learnt to trust him If that makes sense I really hope that she gets the ending she deserves because she has been poor and captured her entire life
RYLAND/ALEC ughhhh I libe him Baby Not actually He is insane. In strength But Baby I libe how he never doubted piper? Like he always trusted her I feel like he’s a good judge of character I also love how he remembers/notices the small things He noticed she always wore the coat so he fixed it He went to get the kids when she was injured, even though they shouldn’t be friends He trusted her even when she tried to kill him I don’t know I feel like there is definitely more depth to his backstory then I know about as of now I also love love love How his character portrays how power can become OBERWHELMING we do not get enough representation of power struggles Like it’s always I’m so strong Never I wish i wasn’t strong because it interferes with my life Because it would!!!
HONOURABLE MENTIONS
MADELYN AND CALEB these kids Omg I don’t want them to find out Abby/ their mum is dead No kid deserves that Caleb is going to hate piper. I’m not ready
BEKS I fucking live her I libe how headstrong and stubborn she is But she is so kind and humble If I wasn’t told she was the princess I wouldn’t know She did everything with the desire to help people And even though yes, there was technically some selfish intent cause it also meant saving her brother, she wasn’t angry at piper or Alec when they couldn’t free her brother
LIAM I thought I didn’t like him But I do? Like at the end when he stuck up for piper That was so cute
MY HATED
LORE I want to guy bim form the inside out The amount of torture he has committed to just piper He deserves a taste of his own medicine In what chaoter will be die?
SAXE okay don’t hate me but at the start I was thinking Hmmm maybe some enemy to liver material But no He Makes me so mad I can’t do it He just KET everything happen to piper When he could have helped Nope
ISO yes he tried to kill piper But I want to put it out there I don’t hate him And I really hope piper gives that ring to his gf? plssssss
QUOTES
“I’ll need to be able to stab people”
“I knew you’d come” “Of course I came” TEARS TEARS I SAY because even in the light of hope Death still came
Okay that’s all I’m starting book two NOW

Wow! What an engaging and fun read! If you are a fan of Throne of Glass this is definitely up your alley. The beginning was a little slow for me, but the book really draws you in and it became hard for me to put it down! The FMC is extremely likable and I found myself easily invested in the character. The world building (which is a MUST in fantasy novels) was very detailed. I did find it easy to get all the different aspects of the world confused in the beginning, but got a better grasp on it throughout the novel. I also loved all the twists throughout the book - it always kept you guessing! Overall I enjoyed this read and can’t wait for the next in the series (that cliff hanger though 😅).
Thank you to the author and Hazel’s Booktour for giving me a copy of the book to review!
Piper is known on the streets of Silversdale as Belladonna, a fearsome and effective assassin, but she manages to keep a low profile during the day... until she is sent to kill a mage staying in the royal household. Her failure throws her into a dangerous mystery that involves a string of disappearances. Solving the mystery may cost Piper her life - or the lives of people she cares deeply about.
I've been let down in the past by fantasy novels with purported assassins as MCs, so it is with great delight that I have discovered The Sharp Edge of Fate. Piper is the assassin I've been looking for. She's complex and sympathetic - and benefits from inhabiting a richly built world that feels both familiar and fantastical. This is a solid debut that leaves you craving the next instalment.
The first in a fantasy trilogy, this book follows Piper, a female assassin known for leaving the belladonna berries on her victims. When things go wrong with a new target, her personal and “professional” lives start to converge. Suddenly she has to help solve disappearances haunting the city and her own friends. The world building, characters, and plot twists that this book takes are so well done. For an assassin, the FMC is very likable and her banter with the MMC was great! I can’t wait for the second book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and Hazel’s Book Tours in exchange for a read and review. All opinions are my own.
I did enjoy the book. Likeable characters, fascinating world, very rich in description - certainly my cup of tea.
Sometimes felt like I needed to fill in the gaps myself, or had to double infer at times, like there were plot holes in the story. Also the assassin trope is definitely giving ToG vibes, but, look, those minor criticisms aside, Fate knows I’ll be continuing the Belladonna trilogy.

A fun read, with a strangely likeable character (for an assassin), that flows from one exciting action to the next with quiet familyish interludes that add to the overall story.
So good! An action-packed fantasy adventure featuring an assassin and a mage becoming reluctant partners to investigate a series of missing persons around the city.
The plot was the standout in this story, as it should be in any action adventure. You jump straight into action on the first page, although the stakes keep ramping up throughout the story. The author also had a really good sense of pacing throughout the story, as periods of intense action would be followed by some calmer scenes, so the plot wasn't breakneck throughout. Backstory and worldbuilding is slowly filled in as you go.
Characters: Piper's assassin name, Belladonna, is far more well known than she is, and she prefers it that way. Her character has all the strong, competent, solo FMC vibes but she has a good support system and enough character flaws to be realistic. She also has a huge soft spot for children and her friends. I liked her, but Alexander and a few of the supporting characters were my favorites. Piper and Alexander's interactions were full of all the sniping and banter that I love to read.
Romance: Ultra slow-burn. In this book, the main characters become enemies to reluctant partners, with only slight hints for romance to come in the future.
Content: In-world strong language (primarily use of the word "fate" as a swear word), no spice, very light swoon. Several action and fight scenes with descriptions of death (our hero is an assassin after all), but nothing graphic or gory
Tone: Plenty of grit from the assassin and kidnapping elements, balanced by lighthearted banter, Piper's inherent kindness, and her pre-existing support system. The book was just the way I like, enough action and suspense to be interesting, but light enough to not trigger my anxiety. The tone reminded me a lot of something JA Andrews might write.
Cliffhanger? Not exactly... more like this book was part 1 of a long story and it ended at a good pause point. Most plotlines are ongoing, but the book ends at a lull in the action after a couple plots were resolved.
What didn't I like? In this book, these issues were very minor, and didn't detract from the story very much. I didn't like Piper's use of the word "baby," partly because I just don't like it, partly because she used it too often, and partly because why would you TRY to call a 10 year old "baby"?? She deserved the kid's wrath for that. Also, the story introduced several other races/species, which didn't contribute to this story very much. I wait to see if these become more important in future books, or were invented just to add variety to the worldbuilding.
The Sharp Edge of Fate is the first book in a new fantasy trilogy that follows Piper, a tiny woman who's been an assassin for 14 years in the employ of Lore, a vile man she owes a huge monetary debt to. On a rush job gone awry she crosses paths with the court mage Alec. Together they have to solve the mystery of the disappearances of the crown prince Jai and Piper's best friend Abby. During their investigations they run into magic traps, monsters, murderers, gang leaders and the police.
What I liked about the book: - Character-focused - The FMC is quite badass - Alec is a cool character - Interesting concept - Magic and technology co-exist - The fight scenes are very well-written - The world is populated by folkloric creatures and beings and some of them are straight-up terrifying
What didn't work for me:
Remember this is highly subjective, and also I may have missed some things because I tend to read before bedtime.
I don't understand the world of Silvaein at all. It seems so anachronistic? Like, there's castles and inns and mansions, dwarven smiths, guards with swords, magic, the FMC exclusively uses daggers etc, but the MCs also wear jeans and get takeaway coffee, there are trams, cars, indoor plumbing, factories and radios. I still don't know if the trams and radios run on electricity or magic.
But the thing that confused me the most is that this world, which isn't our world, has two suns and two moons, yet this has had no effect on how the world has developed or how the society functions. This world has developed just like ours and functions just like ours, with a few magical exceptions. You'd think that two suns and two moons would have some sort of effect on the length of the day/night cycle, on the weather, the tides, agriculture, technology, the gravity? But no, a day is 24 hours, a week is 7 days and there's no discernible difference in the length of the day/night and everything else seems to work pretty much the same as in our world. Yes, this is fantasy and not scifi, but I feel the worldbuilding still needs some scientific basis to it, you know?
Some questions I was left with (again, I may have missed stuff):
- What are the fate marks? - Why do the assassins not kill royals? - Why does water dampen magic? - Why does Piper - an assassin -freak out over a little congealed blood? - Why does Piper not ask Beks, a Seer and Abby's neighbor (?), about Abby's disappearance?
All of this might be addressed in the sequel, tho, which I believe comes out at the end of the month :)
📚 The Sharp Edge of Fate (The Belladonna Trilogy) 🖊️ TF Johnson
Rating: 4.5 🌟 Wow, I really loved this book and am so excited to be a blackcoat. There was a map included, which automatically gets me excited to take a deep dive. TF Johnson introduces us to a fantasy trilogy based in an industrial time period through an in depth descriptive tale told through third person point of view. I was hooked from the first chapter, the story immediately gave of Throne of Glass / Lady of Darkness vibes (which are my top two all time favorite series). This book features an original and intricate magic system filled with mages, elves, dwarves, puka, humans, and more!
Piper is a trauma ridden flawed protagonist who exhibits snarky swagger, while also being fiercely protective over her found family. She’s a savage assassin who can be brutal at times, but also has some sense of morality. As her target, Alexander couldn’t be more different. He’s straight edged, works closely with the Royal family, and very powerful. Watching their enemies to reluctant partnership evolve was really fun and made me laugh out loud quite a few times! The ending was emotionally charged and left me excited for the release of the second book.
This book is perfect for someone looking for an original and anticipatory plot, that is also well written and descriptive. It kept me on the edge of my seat, and the only reason I put it down was because I had to go to work. There was not any spice in the first book, so I’m holding out for the second! I did get confused at certain parts, but it was nothing major and didn’t keep me from devouring the book. The only thing I wish the book did have that it didn’t was a Glossary. I love when books with intricate magic systems and terrifying creatures have key terms highlighted out! 🫶🏼
This is a great one. It’s probably actually a 4.5 from me. The world building is so solid, and it skirts the fantasy / urban fantasy line wonderfully (I love it when authors do this well!!)!!
The characters are all very fleshed out, and the author does such a good job at making even the side characters that appear momentarily in the story feel important. The villains are perfectly villainous, and there are more than a few of them in this one.
This book has assassins, magic, a kidnapping, horrible monsters, talking tattoos, questionable allies, a Ketterdam-like underworld - what is there not to like?! Actually now that I’m writing this, I’ve realised that there are elements in this one that remind me of the Grishaverse and maybe that’s why I like this book so much!
The slow burn in this is also very real. Which, quite honestly IS SO NICE!!! So many stories these days have romances that go from 0 to 100 way too quickly - but this story has them actually figure themselves out first, and it gives me so much confidence that when it eventually happens it’s going to be grounded in a lot of trust and familiarly and friendship that would make it so much more believable than 80% of the books making the rounds on social media right now.
I only took half a star off because I felt like there was a lot of aspects of the plot / story that were left unanswered - but this is the first of a trilogy so I understand that there’s a lot more story to tell. But maybe too much was unanswered (for me anyway).
But otherwise, this was such a solid book. So glad I picked this up at a convention randomly because of the pretty cover and the pretty artwork on the author’s table :)

Thank you so much to the author and Hazel’s Booktours for sharing a copy of this book with me!!!
"You've got a fate mark on your arm,"
"And I still don't like mages!" Ale closed his mouth. "Oh I know," he said. His blue eyes glinted in amusement, and he gave her a real smile. "Trust me. I know."
This book was absolutely marvellous !!! An amazing fantasy book with a trained unaliver and a mage, working together against all odds to save the people they care about from harm. Only she had been previously ordered to unalive him so … there’s that too!! Piper is such an amazing, badass wonderful FMC, who loves fiercely and endlessly and without reservation. The way she takes care of her friend’s children is wonderful and heartwarming; especially considering her occupation, so to speak. And Alec … I honestly do not know if I love him more now, where their tension and his appreciation of her is still marked by his uncertainty of what she could do to him or maybe later on when he will do anything to save her even from herself !! A black mage and the Belladonna unaliver … it’s a couple, isn’t it? And somehow so many more twist and turns in the story that made this action packed fantasy book even more entertaining that I ever thought it could be!! And … we have some definitely amazing daggers to the throat scenes so … guys we are in for an amazing series with this one!!! I still have so many questions left unanswered and I honestly can’t wait for another instalment after the kinda cliffhanger at the end of this book!!
Piper is a reluctant assassin known as the Belladonna working under the thumb of a man named Lore. She’s a deadly force who leaves her victims with a calling card of poisonous berries but harbors a very layered complexity. The story takes off when an assignment veers off course, forcing her to ally with her intended target as they unravel a mystery tied to disappearances, including that of a close friend and a royal family member. Add in two children Piper is helping to raise, and you’ve got a rich web of motivations pulling her in opposite directions as the danger rises.
Piper is magnetic. Her assassin role contrasts beautifully with the tenderness she shows the kids in her care. The children feel like genuine characters, not mere props, which is such a unique addition to the story. Her connection with her former target is another aspect I adored; their dynamic flickers between friendship, alliance, and just a little flirtation. It's a “will-they-won't-they” pairing set against a world dripping with danger and intrigue—perfectly suited to the gaslamp fantasy vibes.
Magic pulses through this world in a fascinating way, from the atmosphere to the living tattoo creatures. This is a story for readers who enjoy immersing themselves in the characters' lives, with a narrative that rewards taking it slow to appreciate the detail. The Sharp Edge of Fate hooks you with its dark, brooding charm, and it’s one you’ll want to savor.
Thanks so much to R&R Booktours and the author for the complimentary copy. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.
I need the next book yesterday!! I have so many questions. There was a really interesting build to this one. It’s like every event added another layer to the mystery building the suspense. Pipers first conversations with Alec were everything. The tension, the distrust, the disbelief on both sides. Just chefs kiss. Listen tell me there’s an assassin as the FMC and I’m already interested, when you add in a slow burn enemies to lovers angle I’m all in. It’s funny because I find myself suspicious of literally every character but Piper and the alchemist. They are just trying to live, survive and do what they can but there’s no real pretense. The Belladonna has so many facets to her that she’s fascinating and it just gets more so with every bit of information we get. Alec is similar in that aspect, but he’s definitely never really had to color outside of the lines so to speak. The fate marks are such a unique piece to add into the puzzle. Those poor kids and everything they have been through and are going to go through is just heartbreaking. My mind is going about a thousand thoughts a minute over this book. I’m so beyond happy I got to be a part of this book promotional tour.
I met this author at a recent fan event and thought the book sounded interesting, so I grabbed it to have a read, and I am so glad that I did!
I very much enjoyed this novel.
Our main character, Piper - imagine hard life, becomes assassin, even though she doesn't really want to. Throw in some kidnapping, murder, magic and mystery and I was hooked.
Be warned there is very little to no romance in this book, but you can see it developing for later books. I actually found this really refreshing, an enemies to friends to lovers that is actually believable, not weirdly forced with an abundance of erotic thoughts like I've read in some recent books that shall not be named.
There are a few plot holes/things that aren't properly explained, though I'm having faith in the author that answers will come in later books and that it isn't poor writing. The only thing that didn't really work for me is the whole kids aspect. I found that whole part mostly meh especially the attitude of Caleb and Piper's unrealistic coddling of them.
Overall, though, I enjoyed the book and would read the next one in the series.
✨ Murder, mystery, mayhem… and one of the most unique fantasy series I’ve picked up in ages! ✨
I absolutely loved this book. The banter between Piper and Alec had me grinning, the worldbuilding was rich and imaginative, and the storytelling felt both original and fresh. I adored how it wove in modern touches while still holding onto that mystical, magical fantasy vibe.
Piper isn’t just any assassin. She’s the Belladonna, the most elusive killer in the realm. But when a job for her ruthless boss, Lore, goes disastrously wrong, she’s thrown headfirst into a web of political intrigue, betrayal, and deadly stakes. To make matters worse (or better?), she’s forced to work with Alec Ryland, an infuriatingly handsome Blackcoat Mage of the Royal Family and the very mark who got away.
With her friend Abby’s life on the line, Piper must navigate danger, deception, and a race against time. And while the book doesn’t end on a cliffhanger, it leaves so many delicious questions dangling that I couldn’t resist diving straight into books 2 and 3.
If you love fantasy with sharp banter, assassins, magic, and a touch of chaos, this series is a must. 🔥

The first in a fantasy series, and I was hooked, off to purchase the paperback and pre-order book 2! I need these on my shelves!
Engaging? You betcha! I was hooked. Every chapter was packed with magical characters and super descriptive events. The suspense just grew and grew as the mystery developed.
The characters were multilayered and bloody brilliant, Piper is sassy and so badass, but she has a softer side when it comes to those she loves fiercely. Then we have Alec, who is gentle and caring but strongly devoted and will stop at nothing to protect the people around him, even the one person who was sent to unalive him. The tension between these too was sizzling off the page, and although there wasn't any smut within this book, I'm hopeful for book 2.
An action-packed story from beginning to end with one helluva cliffhanger ending. We are in for a treat with this series. I can't wait for the next one.
I went into this one, not even having read the synopsis, and I think you should too. Spoiler free zone over here 👉 👈
Omg...I loved this book, it was such an enjoyable and fun read that I can't stop myself from completing it in 2 days(It was a one-time read honestly). It is fantasy novel with an element of mystery, thrill and action... In the beginning it's slow paced but as the story progresses, it becomes hard to put the book down.
Our character Piper known as Belladonna (famous assassin) is such an amazing and badass character who is fierce, complex and intelligent. The way she take cares of her friend's children and how she loves them is so heartwarming...and Alec is just ..what do I say..I guess you have to read about it ...He is a mage and piper is assassin ..what a fierce couple..Right?
I loved the world building (which is main point in fantasy novel) , characters and plot twists throughout the book..It ends on a cliffhanger .Overall I enjoyed the book and it was an fun and easy read and now I'm waiting for next book in the series.I'd definitely recommend this book.
The Sharp Edge of Fate is a thrilling fantasy novel that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The world-building in this book is incredible, and I found myself easily swept away into the city of Silversdale. The characters, especially Piper and Alec, are well-developed and complex, making them feel incredibly real. I loved the dynamic between the two of them and how their relationship evolved throughout the story.
TF Johnson's writing is engaging and pulls you in from the very first page. The plot is fast-paced and full of twists and turns that kept me guessing until the very end. I can't wait to see what happens next in the series and am eagerly anticipating the release of book two. If you're a fan of fantasy novels with strong world-building and compelling characters, then I highly recommend picking up The Sharp Edge of Fate. It's a must-read that you won't be able to put down.
The Belladonna is a skilled and successful assassin. She has managed to keep her identity hidden from everyone, but all that is about to change. She is assigned a high profile and very well paid target, but however much she tries to refuse, this job is hers whether she likes it or not.
The following day, she not only finds her best friend missing, but her "failed assignment" sat waiting for her. He has a reason for seeking The Belladonna out though, and it has nothing to do with revenge. He too has had someone go missing, and it looks like they'll need to work together to find their loved ones.
I absolutely loved this. The characters were well fleshed out and the plot was so unpredictable. I loved the main characters. I'm hoping at some point there may be a little romance on the cards, definitely feels like a slow burn. Very original concept and the story just kept building. I cannot wait for book 2. Not long to wait at least!!!
Meandering is a good way to describe the writing style of this book. The writing is lush and descriptive, and the world-building is thorough and sumptuous but both seem to be favoured over actually progressing the plot. Not a lot of anything particularly happens until about Chapter 7 when Piper sets out to assassinate the MMC, and even then the remainder of the story is peppered between scenes of dropping children at school, riding trams, helping with homework and just about any mundane task you can think of making the pacing of the actual story very, very slow. Overall this reads a lot like a YA not an adult fantasy/romantasy despite what Goodreads has categorised it as, and whilst the story is very good, actually finding it amongst the unnecessary day-to-day scenes is a bit of a struggle at times. I will read the rest of this series but I'm not exactly hungry to jump to the next book if it is going to be more of the same plodding descriptions and not a whole lot of action.
⭐️ Rating: 4.5/5 🌶️ Rating: 1 on the RCRS scale (nothing physical but something is brewing)
I was so excited to add this book to my TBR but unfortunately (and I acknowledge it may be my life getting in the way of my reading) but it took me a little while to get into the story. HOWEVER once I was in I was hooked! I was sucked in at about 20% - so much so that I read from 20-85% in one sitting.
While I initially struggled to connect with her, Piper is just straight up badass & I could relate to so many of the choices she made. Alec is a fascinating sidekick (who will ultimately become… more…?) with magic I don’t fully understand - and I’m of the opinion that he is the walking green flag Piper deserves.
Having gobbled up TSEOF I am nervous to purchase book 2 simply because it’s 10pm & I’m not sure I’ll get any sleep tonight if I do!
I felt a little lost with some things. What is a tseon? What is a fate mark? 🤷♀️ Some things felt like I had missed something. I would then re-read, only to realise I had to fill in the blanks myself as details were missing.
I get Piper, our FMC, is a badass assassin but she constantly seems to run into situations with little thought. How Alec, our MMC, puts up with her I have no idea! 🤣
I wouldn't say there is any romance. Yes, you get the idea that things will develop but it's not by the end of this book! If you're expecting romance, don't! 😂
Despite my few frustrations, the story does move along at a good pace. Plenty of things happening to keep you going and I enjoyed the characters.
I'm hoping there will be a whole bunch of answers coming in book 2 that will fill in all of the questions I have.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and Hazel’s Book Tours in exchange for a read and review. All opinions are my own🫶
This book was definitely giving throne of glass vibes because of the fact the FMC was an assassin who was super relatable and likeable. It started off a little slow and I struggled to get into it but I thoroughly enjoyed the concept when I did start to get more invested in the book!
I loved the concept of the belladonnas and having her tell tail trade mark as well as the intricate fantasy world! Although I was a little confused at the start but it’s just one of those things where you keep reading and it all eventually makes sense🥰
Overall it was a good book and enjoyed reading it💗
