With a djinn on the loose in Heathen Row, everything just went from normal, everyday weird to ‘whaaaaaat the ever-loving hell is going on?’
So, naturally, Chris Hart has his hands pretty full.
He’s juggling the aftermath of so many wishes gone wrong, trying to fix some seriously messed up portals, and working to crack the code on a dangerous underground market. All while maintaining his monster women’s deadly appetites.
Not to mention, the unexpected return of a certain Green Beret who doesn’t take any crap.
Hey, at least it’s not raining blood or something crazy like that.
Welcome to Heathen Row is a really good series so far. Something I really have to praise Jacobs for is keeping the monster girls monstrous. Too often monster girls just end up being regular women with monster features whereas these are violent and bloodthirsty. I especially enjoy Jacobs leaning in to how incredibly creepy and morbid Aoife can be, and not shying away from Merrin's unique dietary requirements.
My biggest issue - which isn't really an issue, more a logical contradiction - is that we're supposed to believe Chris fought and won against monsters for a year and a half before the start of the first book. With how often he gets his ass kicked or caught in a monster's emissions, despite being able to see them, makes it harder and harder to believe.
I don't like MC's that sit on the side-lines watching everyone else fight (looking at you Dragon Conjurer) but maybe it's not the best idea for an average human - whose only extraordinary ability is having funky sight - to jump in the thick of things as bait, letting a monster feed on you to get her in stabbing range, while you have three (now four) incredibly fast and powerful monsters at your side?
Either way, some incredibly questionable decisions by the characters aside, this series is definitely high up on my recommendations so far.
Logan Jacobs does a great job in yet another book in the series. I love the development of the characters and the way he keeps the excitement going. The fear and elation and excitement and dread all in different scenes makes for a fun read. I am looking forward to the next book and wondering how they're going to get out of this latest development.
When an author drops a series like this one did, it pisses me off!!! After enjoying five books in a series it just ended, no mention of part six, just nothing!
As with many books by this author, the first 2-3 were pretty good, but at this point in the series it's settled down to a bit of a slog.
I'll be honest, I sort of half ready/half skimmed this one. It was...you know...fine. If you read the first four books, and you liked them well enough, and you've got KU, it's probably worth reading this one too, just don't expect much.
