Very good book

I have never read an Elizabeth Lane book before this one. I really loved this book. That means I will be finding more of her books to read. Brandon, Harriet, Will, and Jenny were excellent characters. The book kept me glued to my kindle all afternoon. This is a definite TBR book. Highly recommend it to anyone who likes a well written story.

This is my favorite book so far this year; it was interesting, unusual and a meaty story. Brandon Calhoun, town banker and father of a pretty teen daughter, takes the town teacher, Harriet Smith, to task for her younger brother’s interest in his daughter.

Thirty-year-old spinster Harriet refuses to back down to Brandon Calhoun and lets him know that she isn’t too impressed with the willful Miss Jenny Calhoun. Brandon tries to buy Will’s abiding by Brandon’s wishes by offering to pay for his university education. Harriet refuses for Will.

We soon find that Will and Jenny are in love and going to have a baby. They also run away to get married. Harriet and Brandon are both horrified by this turn of events. They rush to stop the wedding but have a serious accident on the way.

When Brandon refuses to accept his son-in-law, Jenny moves in with Harriet and Will. If that weren't enough, Brandon is involved with one of his least satisfying tasks at his bank – having to foreclose on two brothers who frittered away the money lent to them.

Brandon and Harriet are multi-dimensional and fascinating. Will and Jenny are much more mature than their ages indicate. This story really was appealing; the twists added so much to the caliber of the story.

This book was a lovely surprise. I purchased it as part of a lot of several romance novels, and never having read Ms. Lane's work before, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. It proved to be my favorite book of the lot. The characters were realistic, the plot wasn't too convoluted, and the story held my interest from start to finish.

The author managed to avoid many of pitfalls common to historical romance novels: unrealistically "feisty" heroines whose supposed "independence" leads them to make one stupid decision after another; cruel leading men; flawless two-dimensional characters; romance that springs out of nowhere toward a novel's end, etc.

Both Brandon and Harriet were relatable and likable, but I especially loved Harriet Smith. She was intelligent, kind and hardworking. The trajectory of their relationship was also believable. We were allowed to see them start to develop trust and respect for one another before actually falling in love (or into bed).

I'll be on the lookout for more novels by Elizabeth Lane.

I kind of liked this book, it was funny in some ways and nice, although in the last part it was a bit "lost".
