Katie Smucker didn’t set out to break the rules. The first time she saw her shunned sister and spoke to her, she nearly buckled with guilt. But every time after that, it got easier and easier.
Both Katie’s sisters have left their Amish roots. Katie’s heart breaks every time she thinks about her mother never seeing her two grandchildren. Is there any way Katie can intervene? But how, without taking even more risks…
Katie has been smitten with Menno Bontrager for years. She seeks out excuses to see him and talk with him. Menno has been a butcher for years, and his father before him, and his grandfather before that. When Katie begins to have qualms about butchering animals for meat, she keeps it to herself. But one day, she blurts it out.
Making things worse, Menno finds out Katie has been secretly seeing her shunned sister. Katie fears all is lost, but then Menno makes a surprising claim.
Brenda Maxwell as one of my favorite go to authors after I read several NetGalley books needing full, complete reviews. This book is NOT a novella.
Imagine yourself Amish. Imagine yourself an Amish young lady whose courting. Imagine yourself as the same Amish young lady and you love animals. You get them. They love you back. You bond with animals. You name them. And you name them anyway.
The courting is getting fairly serious and you have a big problem... You are becoming a vegetarian and you don't even know what that word means. You just can't stand they thought of eating an animal you want named. Ney. In fact it goes beyond that. The taste of meat just doesn't appeal to you at all.
But that's not your big problem. The young man you're about to say yes when he ask you to marry him Is the son of a butcher. In fact, he's the one taking over the family business when his dad retires. It doesn't matter that your family has been exchanging baked goods for meat for ages. Can you really marry a man that's butchers animals when you love them so much you can't even eat them?
I was intrigued from the get go trying to imagine an Amish person unable to eat meat but cause they love animals. That's scenario makes for a very interesting story. Add adding and who she's going to marry and what is lively hood is going to be — oh boy!
This was an amazing story about Amish families who failed to get along because of their limited narrow beliefs. I’m so glad Katie and Menno were finally able to settle their meat opinion differences and come together as a happy couple.
