Not Quite Enough about the DASH Diet

This audiobook comes with a companion PDF you can download at Audible. I always appreciate it when nonfiction authors include a PDF with the audiobook. I think it's essential for books that include recipes, as recipes are not well suited to the audiobook format. I listen to many audiobooks, with and without PDFs, and this author used the combination in an unusual fashion. They actually felt like two completely separate elements only loosely tied together but each incomplete without the other. The PDF is not a word-for-word visual version of the audiobook, nor does the audiobook have everything that's in the PDF. They are truly meant to go together. For instance, I think only a handful of recipes are actually stated in the audiobook, but they are all in the PDF. As a recipe and cookbook lover, I'm glad to have the PDF and don't really care that they're missing from the audiobook.

The author calls this a “complete” book, something I wish authors would stop doing, as no book on a contemporary topic can ever be complete. I certainly would not call this one complete in any way, shape, or form. In a book supposed to be about the DASH diet, I didn't feel as though that was enough of the focus of the book. It seemed to be far more about weight loss than using the DASH diet for weight loss. Out of the 3 hours of the audiobook, it felt like only a handful of minutes were spent discussing the tenets and follow-through of the DASH diet itself. And the concept that there is any idea of a “DASH exercise” concept is completely ludicrous, as there isn't. Yes, of course, there is such a thing as healthful exercise, but pairing it with the concept of the DASH diet as if they’re a thing is just wrong. The author spent far too much time on peripheral, tangential weight loss topics that have nothing to do with the DASH diet, but could be a part of it if desired, like intermittent fasting and other ways of healthful eating that don't quite fall under the DASH diet umbrella—and the author didn’t quite draw the connections.

This only has a handful of recipes for the different standard meals of the day, snacks, and desserts. Some recipes sounded tasty, but I felt as though the author relied upon many of the same ingredients, including unusual seasonal ones like pomegranate seeds. The DASH diet is not nearly as limited as other diets, and it would have been nice if the small group of recipes the author created/chose included more ingredients from its generous rainbow of choices. The included PDF has no photographs of the recipes. The recipes are not written in the best recipe format. I'm a great lover of cookbooks, both self-published and traditionally published, and I firmly believe that self-published recipes should reach the high standard set by traditional ones, including that the ingredients should be listed in the order given in the directions. That did not happen here.

Unfortunately, too, I have an issue with the audiobook's narrator. This isn't the first time I've complained about her, as she does a very unprofessional job for what I assume is a paid narrator. What makes that so? The book actually has several narrating errors, places where she said the wrong thing, made a verbal flub, etc. The narrator didn't do a good enough job scrubbing back and removing the errors. One you could definitely tell she meant to go back and fix, as she snapped her fingers after the error, as I've heard her do around other mistakes in other books, which I believe would raise the amplification of the audio waveform so that, theoretically, it would jump out at her so she could go back and fix something easily. But she did not do this in that spot or fix other errors that crept in.

If you're truly interested in using the DASH diet to help you on your weight loss journey, I recommend finding a better source of information about it.

Terrible

There is nothing in this book you cannot find for free online. Start with the American Heart Association or a reputable diabetes organization.

If you are mobility impaired, this is not the exercise program for you. I hate to admit it, but I broke down crying for the hundredth time reading this. A 10-minute walk is a warm up? If I could walk for 10 minutes straight I would be ecstatic!

I am a veteran of every diet that has been written since the early 1970s. The DASH diet itself is probably one of the best and most sustainable. However, this book contributes nothing to the subject and is best avoided.

Sounds like it was written by someone who has never dieted in their life

It was the same old, same old... Rehashing the usual drivel without any real knowledge of the subject. The food sounds really awful too. No insights and what is included could be gleaned from a billion other official government websites.

Very sensible information

Am just beginning this process. Good thing I like quinoa and oatmeal and will incorporate avocado when necessary. Removing the sodium ingredient is the easy part.
