In a world without stars, divine crystals shield the folk of Esiaga from fiends that prowl the darkness.
When Lior, a priest who communes with the crystals, prays to the deities and asks for their guidance, he is met only with silence. Guidance is something he yearns for as he watches his convent brothers either fall to creatures that lurk in the shadows or lose their minds trying to harness the power of the crystals’ light.
That is, at least, until travelers arrive on behalf of the Queen. Sworn to come to their kingdom’s aid in times of need, Lior and his convent brothers must make the hazardous pilgrimage to the capital, Bangol. The guidance Lior has always sought comes in the form of Elouan, the paladin sworn to guide the convent’s caravan. Where Elouan leads Lior, however, deviates from the known path.
The Light Must Hold — a classic dark fantasy adventure that combines fanciful prose and sisyphean struggles.
An intriguing and dark fantasy world with a large pinch of horror. The authors unique and lyrical voice conjures a fascinating story while the danger will keep you turning the pages. The Bonded was my favorite aspect of the world, while creepy and a tad morbid, the questions surrounding them helped to propel my deeper into the story. I enjoyed the twist of light vs darkness that The Light Must Hold took and left me wanting more.
This was such an amazing surprise of a novel. It took all of my attention and all I wanted to do was to keep reading and finding out more of this journey. I have never read another story that on reflection was so sad, desolate and despairing but still equally had such threads of hope. Some of the writing lost me with specifics my the overall story was incredible and I never expected that when I randomly picked this up because I thought it had paladin vibes. I felt winded when the novel was over and I cannot believe where it ended, I really want to know what happen next and if that hope was false and what happens to everyone else, there are so many threads that I need tied up. Such an amazing ride though all of the most hopeless emotions. I really hope there is a continuation, *4.5.
This was such an intense read, from the first page until the last. While there were calling moments to still the heart and give me a breather, the world created by Gallom was absolutely terrific.
Truly enjoyable read with a very realistic main character! Thank you!!
This book captured my imagination immediately! I loved the world and the cast of characters at hand. The story follows the adventures of Lior and his brothers in worship as they make a most dangerous journey across the harrowing world in which they live. The prose is rich and the story pulled me right in.
