DNF at 43%. This wasn't written badly, but there were just a ton of plot holes, ranging from Amy's mindset and behaviors to how everything progressed with Mark. And the pacing was incredibly fast, which diluted the effect that certain situations should have had. I wanted a lot more focus on Amy's psychological process and much less of the insane antics that Mark was perpetrating throughout. Not a bad story, for those into thrillers like this, but just too many distractions for me to handle.

Shockingly Good!

I'm still a little speechless after reading this book, but I wanted to write my review. The word "WOW" really isn't even sufficient enough to describe what I thought after reading it. First book by this author and I'm glad I took the chance. I almost Never read books by male authors because most of the time their point of view is so masculine that it doesn't interest me at all. I have now read really good books by 3 male authors so my bias has changed significantly. Suffice it to say, this book was so SHOCKINGLY good that I literally could not put it down once I started it! There, I've said it again. The writing style is very matter of fact and comes across like a conversation with a friend. I was so invested in Amy that I was plotting to kill Mark myself. I will say though that it is kind of unbelievable that Amy's mom wouldn't have at least showed up or called her on her birthday. What kind of Mom never questions what's going on in their daughter's life? I think that made no sense, and I would say, one of my only gripes. However, I did love this book, so I will be going back for more Boris Basic books, I can promise you that. So congratulations Boris for being one of only 3 male authors that have made the cut. You now have another fan! I can't wait to read another one to find out if it is as good as the last one, so sign me up!

This was another great short story that had you on the edge of your seat!

Boris writes so well from the female perspective and has such great strong female characters.

I love how there is always a crescendo towards the end.

I look forward to reading more of his short stories.

I’m a bit confused here. There’s already a book that this author wrote called Maria and half this story is the same with just a gender swap. Maria was a lot more intense and violent. More sex. But most of the story is the same. Even finding the articles and camera set up. Going to jail all that. This was a good book but recycled material.
Also ending with the best friend was ridiculous. Anyone that would knowingly watch their best friend go through that would be an evil person and is not forgivable.

Listened to the audio version. 4:30 run time. Narrated by Jessica Marchbank

This was going to fall somewhere between a 2.5 to 3 star until I hit the last 1/4 of the book and then it was a 2, but the ending just killed it. The ending ruined what little bit of redeeming qualities I was grasping at.

The writing felt basic and very simplistic, juvenile for the majority. The dialogue felt forced, awkward, and unnatural. It wasn’t written well and did not feel polished. It felt very dumbed down.

The storyline just wasn’t good. There was nothing new to the perfect guy is really a cruel, insane stalker trope. Girl meets this perfect guy. Girl falls instantly in love. Girl ignores, flat says she’s ignoring all the red flags because he’s so sweet and handsome (gag). Guy turns out to be a lying nutcase. Girl breaks up with guy. Guy becomes crazed stalker. Girl gets alienated and trapped. The “events” moved too fast with no real emotion to them so they didn’t feel all that scary or suspenseful. The events were just too outrageous to be believable or stressful. It felt like the author was trying to make Mark be this totally suave, ultra convincing Ted Bundy type while trying to make him seem uber unhinged, dangerous and cruel. It just seemed forced and too unrealistic. Amy does nothing to fight back or get help. She doesn’t even seem to take most of it seriously and acts very childish the first 2/3 of the story.

The characters were flat and unbelievable. I really didn’t care for the protagonist and the people surrounding her were either dumber than rocks or just came across as hateful and like they immediately jumped to the worst conclusion rather than giving someone they’ve known, respected, cared for or had a stellar relationship with for years the benefit of the doubt or even trying to get to the bottom of suddenly sketchy, erratic and out of character behaviors/events.
The receptionist alerting the senior management because someone calls once concerned an employee hasn’t answered their cell phone and senior management getting so pissed they threaten her job? Come on. Nowhere is it mentioned Mark called the office repeatedly, (just her cell phone), the receptionist makes it seem he called once and this company blew up. The cops not only disregarding her death threat, but then not even looking into the fact she’s had a death threat on record and suddenly her apartment is broken into, destroyed, and drugs magically appearing?
Mark felt like the author was trying too hard to make him be this outrageously cruel, clever and conniving person. It wasn’t believable when you throw every kind of trope and abuser example in the mix.
Amy just wasn’t likable. Her decisions and lack of reaching out anywhere, to anyone, even her “best friend” about the threats and stalking made it seem like she didn’t take them seriously but yet she was supposedly so afraid? Immediately jumping on tender after breaking up with Mark and instantly falling for another guy and picturing her future with him. She learned absolutely nothing. She very childish, self absorbed, and just dumb. Her commenting how good her body looks and how happy she is she’s lost weight, her stomachs flatter but her “ass is still tight and breasts perky” after weeks to months of not eating and being tortured and how down she is knowing she’ll gain it all back and then some if she gets free? Seriously? And I’m supposed to feel sorry for this person?
Katherine. Wow. Some best friend. She wasn’t a good friend to Amy from the start. Ditching her in the opening sentences at a party she invited her to, treating her like crap, letting her suffer, and lying. Then somehow Amy just forgives her and jokes about what she did, calling her a psychopath and laughing about it. I’m sorry, neither character was likable and they deserve each other. This was the worst, most unbelievable “friendship” I’ve encountered I think.
Kate or Katie was flatter than a flatline. Someone tells you someone crashed your party and made up a story about you and your response is to walk away, unconcerned, like the person’s nuts?

The narration was ok. It was hard at times to keep the women separated because there wasn’t enough distinguishment between female characters. The male characters were decently done, the narrator didn’t try to make over the top ridiculous low masculine voices. Granted she didn’t have much to work with, but I never felt any emotion or terror in her portrayal of the situations, not even the abuse. She had a decent voice and articulated well, she just didn’t make me feel the story in any way or draw me in.

Overall, this just wasn’t written well, didn’t have likable characters, the plot had too many holes and unbelievable, outrageous things in it to be captivating or spark any emotional connection to the characters or events. It was just flat silly most of the time and unfortunately stupid the last 1/3. I don’t recommend. I’ve reviewed the plot below in more detail but it does contain spoilers.

SPOILERS BELOW…..

As I said, the storyline just wasn’t good. There was nothing new to the trope. It wasn’t even a really suspenseful, stressful, edge of your seat stalker situation. The “events” moved too fast with no real emotion to them so they didn’t feel all that scary or suspenseful. The day she gets fired she goes home and says ok, well it’s ok because I can find a better job now and get paid more. Then the next day she has an interview? If she was that amazing of an employee to get an interview that fast, wouldn’t her company have investigated some drastic out of character event a little more?
Not once did I feel tension or stress for Amy. The things Mark does were so outlandish and unbelievable it was almost comical. There wasn’t any build up of worsening behavior to me. He just instantly starts doing outlandish things to “ruin” her after he’s silent for weeks? It just wasn’t believable and felt void of any emotion or stress for the subject matter at hand. It also glosses over trauma so carelessly it’s offensive. The fact he doesn’t even cut her off from everyone added to the absurdity of this plot. He lets her go out for 3 hrs a day alone, go out to buy groceries, keep her phone, etc yet he’s torturing her so severely and beating her she’s too weak to stand? He’s not even the one who cut her off from people…I just didn’t find any part of the story believable or moving.

Katherine knowingly plants fake evidence, treats her “best friend” like utter crap for no reason other than to get a story and “catch” the guy involved with her secret sister’s death. A sister she’s never mentioned to someone who she’s been lifelong friends with? How, if they were such longtime close friends, did Amy not know about Katherine’s family? Then Katherine stands by for months knowing her “best friend” is being abused and never says anything or tries to help. She hinges her great plan on something that may or may not be placed anywhere helpful? All this and Amy just laughs about it and is suddenly back besties with her? Gross.

The big twist at the end was just flat stupid and disgusting. Amy acts as if nothing happened and she’s magically healed and everything is rosy wonderful. She immediately took her job back knowing the company wanted to use her “tragic” story for their public image and is completely fine with it because they gave her her own office. Another gross.

Some glaring potholes to me:
Where was her mother? So her mother doesn’t check in for months but they are supposedly close.
She’s this great person, stellar employee, liked by all, but no one notices any changes in behavior and she doesn’t seem to have any other friends; no one gives her the benefit of the doubt when she disputes things; uncharacteristic things are happening but no one questions them or tries to hear her side; she’s so scared yet she goes through life as if nothing is wrong, she sloughs them off and tells no one.

Just overall poorly done and silly.

Another fantastic story that I've enjoyed very much and spend the first day of 2024 reading it entirely. It does remind me of Maria, but this time my favorite author reversed the gender, and I seriously am glad I was able to get my hands on this book. I highly recommend it!

4 stars on Goodreads?? I’m starting to question the sanity of folks that view this site. My rating was all over the place…from a 1 in the beginning because I hated the writing style…to a solid 3 because I liked how the book was progressing and I wanted to find out more…dropped down to a 2 for that ridiculous ending.

I was really intrigued at first, but as time went on, and the choices that the main character was making were not bad up until the middle of the book. Very questionable. I was almost starting to get mad at some of the decisions being made. I was, but I couldn’t be too upset, because I had to put myself in Amy’s shoes. It was hard, but I could relate to her a bit from my past. Everyone always had a different way of approaching situations, and I understand that. The very end, where Katherine swoops in and saves Amy, was super bizarre. Katherine let Amy go through the most traumatizing, physical, emotional and mental abuse, just to get to Mark put away. It was hard to hear that Amy went through all of that. Losing het best friends and all of her close family and friends for this monster. Just wild. Katherine, I find her to be just as bad as the monster that Mark was. I’m sorry. I know Katherine “saved Amy’s life”, but I would be so upset. A little too late in my opinion, especially when Katherine knew what kind of monster she was dealing with. I know I might be reading too much into this, but I’m a little mad at the outcome. It was good, up until the middle of the book. This gave me “wish version of Frieda McFadden style writing”. Ehh it’s okay though. It was entertaining at least. If you don’t want the end to piss you off, I don’t recommend.

A fantastic story that has you nervous with anticipation on what is going to happen next.

Amy just wants to meet her someone and after attending a friends party she thinks she has. The writing style was great and it it super dark in places however I actually think this book could have been longer to really get a relationship with the characters.

2.5 rounded up
This novel had a lot of potential, and the premise was really intriguing but the execution fell short. Amy meets Mark one night at a party, and she is really taken with him. She soon finds out that he is not quite what he seems to be, and her life starts falling apart.

The novel is way too short for this kind of story, and the psychological trauma that any normal person would experience in this kind of situation was lacking in Amy. It felt like she just took everything in her stride which is SOOOO unrealistic.

Too good to be true

Amy has had a string of bad relationships, some of them abusive. So meeting Mark was fortuitous. He is handsome, attentive and spends all his time with Amy - until it becomes too stifling. She wants out of the relationship but there is no way out. A gut wrenching story which sent shivers down my spine. The author aptly portrays the psyche of a deranged psychopath and the repercussions of his behaviour on his victims who feel throttled and helpless.

This is my first book by this author and I was not impressed. His writing style seemed choppy and disjointed and the ending was hugely disappointing. To think that someone could suffer like that and be fine with it in the end due to unbelievable circumstances was shocking and just plain wrong. With friends like these who needs enemies?

A total psychopath doesn't like being dumped and goes nuclear on our main character. So far, so good, if not particularly original. The ending wasn't that satisfying, though, probably because it happened really suddenly and followed events in her life that should have been suspenseful, but somehow weren't. Still, very worth reading. 3.5 stars.

I was going to give this book 2 stars but the ending was written in such a lazy and sloppy way and made no sense. Some “best friend”. Also I didn’t like that the main character was in an abusive relationship and said but wanted to appreciate how good her body looked after not eating????
It blows me away that this book has 4 stars on good reads. There are just so many better books out there.

This book was soooooo good. A real edge if your seat thriller. So sad in some parts. A twist at the end, that I didn’t see coming. This was a male version of the authors earlier book “Maria”. Read both. They will not disappoint.

2.5 stars. I found it a good read until the "best friend" reveal at the end. I find it impossible to believe that anyone would allow that to happen to someone they cared about. And for so long before doing something about it.

This book was very interesting. I am sure there are many women in this world that suffer abuse at the hand of a man. It’s good to see there are others out there that will take care of other humans.

Solid thriller

Another good book by BB. You kind of know what's coming but you kind of don't. It's a fast read and moves fast. Couple of holes in the storyline, but not enough to ruin the story.
