Treasures of Surrey #3

Neznáma vo Fellsworthe

Rate this book
Aby Annabelle Thorleyová mohla vykročiť na cestu k šťastiu, najprv musí prísť o všetko...

Obľúbená regentská séria Sarah E. Laddovej Poklady Surrey vrcholí treťou časťou s názvom Neznáma vo Fellsworthe, v ktorej nás autorka zavedie na šľachtické panstvá obklopené hustými lesmi a do vidieckej školy vo Fellsworthe.

Keď ju brat začne nútiť k sobášu s násilníckym a oveľa starším Cecilom Bartrellom, dospeje k smelému a na dámu v jej postavení vskutku neslýchanému rozhodnutiu: s pomocou hájnika Owena Locka utečie k svojmu strýkovi, správcovi školy vo Fellsworthe.

A bude vôbec v silách tých, čo mladú ženu ľúbia, aby ju ochránili pred tieňmi minulosti?

Annabelle Thorley’s fiance has just called off her engagement. Scandal around her late father’s financial activity made him bolt, leaving the future of her and her brother in doubt. London society in the early 1800’s was not very flexible for young women. Her brother quickly arranges a marriage to a wealthy gentleman that she cannot stand to be around. Putting her happiness first, she flees her comfortable upper class life and joins her aunt and uncle in Fellsworth.

Her uncle oversees a boarding school where Annabelle find employment as a teacher’s assistant. She provides for herself and no longer has staff at her disposal. She assimilates to living with other teachers in shared housing. Her biggest worry is being found by her brother and being forced into an unhappy arranged marriage.

This book is the third in a series, but it is not necessary to read the prior novels. It is a nice mix of historical fiction, romance and mystery. This was the first novel that I read by the author, Sarah E. Ladd.

I enjoyed this one.

This may be the third book in the Treasures of Surrey trilogy, but it stood very well on its own. I haven't read the first two books yet, but didn't feel lost or anything. I enjoyed this one so much I do want to go back and read the previous books.

I enjoyed the unique regency storyline and setting. Annabelle is not your typical regency heroine and when faced with an unwanted marriage, she runs away to her estranged Uncle in Fellsworth. He runs a boarding school for underprivileged children and offers Annabelle a safe place to stay as well as a teaching position at the school. Annabelle is having to take care of herself for the first time in her life, thrown completely out of her comfort zone she feels a bit lost. Owen Locke is the local gamekeeper and is still getting over the loss of his wife. He is drawn to Annabelle and finds himself wanting to get to know her better. I thought Annabelle and Owen had a sweet courtship and sweet romance.

I enjoyed the storytelling and light suspense of the novel. The setting was fun, haven't read much about boarding schools during the regency time, but think it adds a nice atmosphere for a story. I thought it was well written and the characters were unique and had their own voice. I'd recommend to fans of Julie Klassen.

Sarah E. Ladd is a go to author for me. I read her first series and absolutely loved it. Now I have only read this book in this series but it does well as a stand alone. I had no problem understanding what was going on. This book captured my attention right from the start. I really had a hard time putting it down to do other things. This is not your run of the mill regency where they sit around all day and sip tea, very little of that was done. I was intrigued all the way through this book and the ending, oh my, what an awesome finale. I'd say to Anabelle, watch your back. Who you think is your friend just may not be. Not everyone is who they seem to be! I really enjoyed this and now I need to read the first two books in the series.

Suspense, danger, painting, family, servants, friends, heartache, woods, horses, loneliness, intrigue, prayers, rumors, peace, love, pistols, hunting, carriage rides, dresses, boarding school, jewelry, scandal, dashing hero, teaching, gardens, arranged marriages, murder, Autumn, property, inheritance and a little bit of kissing.

I love this author's books and I really enjoy her writing style, her characters, the suspense(some books have more suspense than others), the mystery, and how she wraps it all up and gives the reader closure. A Stranger at Fellsworth was a great read that had me turning pages to find out what all the mystery was. I would just think I had it figured out and then something would happen and it was different than what I was thinking. I did have my eye on one character in particular but there were several characters who helped put a shadow over the one I was watching. Which then had me trying to decide if I was going to be correct in my guess or not. I love when an author can stump me in my guessing.

Annabelle was a sweet and courageous heroine. I ached for her when she came up against so many struggles. She was trying to find her place and feel loved but her life was full of deceit and being told what to do(yes it's a regency novel so that is what life was like for women, so probably not a big surprise saying she didn't have a lot of say in her choices). Her compassion was a great addition to her character. Several instances in the story showed her true nature and helped endear her character to me more.

Owen has some mystery surrounding him from the very beginning and as you read further into the novel all the bits and pieces are revealed. I really enjoyed the stories about his youth and I liked watching how those stories and life lessons shaped him and affected his decisions as a man.

The chemistry and romance in the book was so well written. I loved all the moments between Annabelle and Owen. You know the video montages on YouTube, yeah I want one showcasing each moment of these two characters with some rain falling down and the right music playing in the background. I'd even vote for a period drama to be made of this novel. I enjoyed the whole of this book but I will say that my favorite part of the book was anytime these two shared page time together. Talk about some sweet and tender moments. Not every moment between them had a romantic feel to it. I loved watching their friendship and relationship grow. Sometimes a little look, sometimes just a conversation. The scene in the study, oh I loved it! There are a couple scenes in the study so you'll have to read to figure it out, but I'm sure you'll know which one I'm talking about!

The pacing of the book had moments where it was a little slower and some where the intensity picks up the pace but I really enjoyed the reflective and slower moments. I think it's a job well done when an author can write a book with balance between the intensity and the slower moments. This has me wanting to go back and reread her other books. I have been a huge fan of her writing since my first book by her. If you haven't read any and like regency novels I highly recommend picking one up and getting lost in the pages.

Content: Clean. Some fight scenes but nothing graphic, and a few sweet kisses. Some talk about finding peace through prayer but nothing preachy. I would recommend this book for YA and up, I'd let my teenage daughters read it.

I received a review copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

I'll be reviewing online about 30 days ahead of publication. I have posted the link where the review will appear.

I really liked Locke...strong, solid guy with a good sense of protective instinct toward the ladies in his life. Initially skeptical about Annabelle's motive, but quickly coming to see her as a woman of character...the early scene with the pickpocket was a good show of both characters.

Annabelle was an enjoyable young lady. She knuckled down and got to work, despite having no prior experience and being used to a life of ease, and not stopping to whine.

The side thread of mystery was a nice bit to add to the story to keep it from being all about the romance. All in all, a pleasant read. I especially liked it that the romance was subdued and not all throbby and hiccup-y...it felt natural instead of sensationalized. The writing style is easy to read and the editing well done, which is always a huge plus for me.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a review copy.

Sqqqqquuuueeeeaaaaalllll alert! A scrumptious Regency with sinister overtones and a despicable villain -- well, more than one -- to thwart! The kind of story that will curl your toes in rapturous delight while sending delicious shivers of trepidation up your spine.

As heroes go, Owen rates right up there. He might not be a traditional high society gentleman but he certainly has more gentlemanly manners than the men Annabelle has been associating with. And Owen has a strong sense of right and wrong, not to mention a protective streak where damsels in distress come into play -- especially where Annabelle is concerned.

Annabelle's world has been turned upside down and hiding away at her uncle's school seems the safest place to be...only there are more mysteries in Surrey than in London and somehow Annabelle becomes entangled in them all.

Impeccable pacing -- subtle nuances that might just be clues are scattered throughout the story and I was furiously trying to put the pieces together before Owen and Annabelle did. Depth and detail in all the characters, not just the hero and heroine, bring this story to life in the manner of a classic BBC drama.

There's a glorious inspirational thread -- subtle but powerful all the same -- woven into the story. Though Annabelle's mother died when she was a young girl, she leaves a legacy of faith behind. A faith that sustains her daughter until she develops a faith of her own. There's a tangible link between Annabelle and her mother that is both bittersweet and joyful and it made me think about the kind of impact I can make on my loved ones. A great spiritual takeaway to ponder long after the last page has been read.

Exciting, uplifting -- full of adventure and romance -- a perfect mix for a Regency read.

Sarah Ladd delivers a solid Regency Romance with a twist of mystery once again.

In this third book in the Treasures of Surrey series, Annabelle is living with her married brother in London and is forced to make a decision to marry a many she finds deplorable or take a risk and leave the life she has known.

The author pens believable and honorable characters in her novels. I continue to enjoy her writing style. A Stranger at Fellsworth is recommended for fans of Regency Romance.

My gratitude to the publisher, Thomas Nelson, for an advance reader copy of the novel. I was not required to write a review. The opinions expressed are my own.

This was really good. I think it’s my favorite in the series. I enjoyed this whole series immensely. The suspense keeps you turning the pages, there was never a dull moment, and I found the characters easy to care for. Owen Locke made a wonderfully, rugged and dedicated main character, and Annabelle was a graceful character with strength and integrity even though she didn’t have all of the answers in her life. I liked how Owen was so in-tune with the outdoors, and that Annabelle had a talent with watercolor arts. I also felt that this story had a little more faith content than book two. I appreciated the wisdom and faith that was presented. Everything felt genuine and not forced.

This might be my favorite of the series. I loved the setting. It feels very atmospheric and is the perfect backdrop to the events in the story. Annabelle is a brave character but is also realistically impacted by the time in which she lives. It is easy to empathize with her. Owen is perhaps the most rugged hero that I’ve read from this author, and I really liked him a lot. I’m eager to catch up on Ladd’s first series, and look forward to her 2020 release as well.

Happy sigh. This trilogy was so good! This particular story was a delightful finale to the series. I enjoyed the contrast of a leading lady who fell from society (thankfully, NOT due to an unwed pregnancy) and a leading man attempting to climb the societal ladder by wanting to become a landowner. It was really interesting to see their differing perspectives and how their circumstances and backgrounds influenced their views of life. The atmosphere of urgency, fear, panic, and danger, as well as friendship, antagonism, and sweet romance created a great immersive experience.

Murder, Mystery, Action, and Romance this book has it! This wasn’t my favorite by Sarah E Ladd, but it was an enjoyable read nonetheless. Annabelle and Owen complimented each other nicely. And Hannah was a sweetheart! I didn’t like Margaret Crosley after they left London. She took a complete one eighty! She is just downright and plain rude and evil! I couldn’t stand her! Her brother, Thomas, was just evil! I really did enjoy the fact that Annabelle was an artist…it added a nice touch to the story. One thing I didn’t like was the fact that his wife cheated on him and Hannah wasn’t even his child. I feel like I read that a lot in historical romance. I do wish there would have been a stronger Christian element. Overall, it was an enjoyable read with likable heroes and heroines who you can cheer on the whole story though!
Favorite Quote: Page 315:
She fixed her red-rimmed eyes on him, and a shaky smile trembled her lips. “There’s something I didn’t get to tell you last night at the festival.”
He thought it an odd thing to say. “Oh? What’s that?”
“I love you, Owen Locke. I love you with everything that I am.” 🥰

There's a quality to Sarah Ladd's writing that is restful to me, even with the tumultuous circumstances of her characters. I so easily sink into the story and am immersed in the setting. I loved seeing Annabelle take her future in her own hands and sacrifice her comfortable lifestyle for her freedom and peace. Owen is a hero that grows on you with his quiet strength and I loved his connection to the forest and land. I enjoyed Annabelle's uncle and aunt as stabilizing characters in her new and very different life. There are elements of suspense as Annabelle is in hiding from her brother and Owen is investigating the network of poachers on the land he is responsible for. The pace steadily builds as relationships deepen, secrets are uncovered, and the complex dynamics of the lives of the characters are intertwined. Annabelle and Owen both grow in their faith as they turn to God for comfort and guidance. Highly recommend to fans of historical and Regency romance!

Wow, for a Regency era tale, this had a faster pace with more action, and the romance was quite believable. It wasn't all balls, gowns and tea cups like some tend to be, although there was a little. Well, it wouldn't be Regency without it, right? It is probably one of my favorite books from this time period, ever!
Several characters were like something from a Dickens or Bronte sisters tale, sinister, corrupt, with societal prejudices, and others full of goodness and hope. An intricate plot kept it going, plus a tender romance for some sigh-worthy moments. Owen Locke is my new book crush.
Highly recommend to readers who enjoy a good Regency era story with some action. 5 stars!

Sarah Ladd's latest novels is one of her best. I enjoyed listening to the audio version. The narrator did a great job portraying the different characters and had a lovely British accent. Owen Lock was a charming and admirable hero. The story contained several twists and turns that kept me listening. The romance was sweet and progressed at a believable pace. Faith played only a minor roll in the story, but it was clean and uplifting.

I liked this book, but I wasn't wowed by it. There was the traditional regency setting, boarding school, lady/servent relationship, mysterious woods, etc. Parts of it I really liked, but it was really easy for me to put down.

I came across Sarah Ladd's first book, 'The Heiress of Winterwood' in the book store and the cover drew me in. It was a wonderful book and I had a new author to follow. Her covers continue to delight. As do her words in each book since.

In the fallout of her deceased father's financial ruin, Annabelle's prospects are looking bleak. Her fiancé calls off their betrothal, which in itself is ruinous to her reputation and now she is at the mercy of her controlling brother who wants her to marry a man of his own choosing. Annabelle decides the only option open to her is to flee to Fellsworth, and fall upon the mercy of her estranged aunt and uncle whom she has not seen in a decade. Her life then takes a dramatic turn.

Owen Locke is a gamekeeper near Fellsworth, where his daughter is a student. He is intent on keeping poachers at bay even though he longs to be a landowner himself. Owen's wife's tragic death has left him shaken, but when he meets Annabelle Thorley, he thinks just maybe he has a second chance at love.

But all is not well at Fellsworth and the surrounding forest. Ominous forces threaten the peace that Owen and Annabelle have found. Poachers, mysterious strangers and murderers converge at the school, forcing Annabelle and Owen to a test of fortitude neither had expected.

Sarah Ladd has always populated her books with engaging characters that seem real to the reader. She has a way with creating emotions within these characters that engage the reader tremendously. Her Regency novels are rich with details of the era, even down to her descriptions of clothing. The emotions here are quite vivid, at times heart pulling and seem to jump off the page at the reader. If you are a Jane Austen fan, you will adore Ladd's books. Personally, I like Ladd's better!

Sarah Ladd also adds many faceted details to her settings as well. When she describes the forest, I feel as if I am actually there, breathing in the same air as her characters do. The descriptions amazed me, as they always do in Ladd's books. The plot is wonderful as well. She gives us a wonderful period drama, rich characters, with every attention to detail as well as great suspense. I had no clue who the culprit was until the very end. Totally unexpected.

I hated for this book to end for it captured my attention from the very first sentence and held it to the last. Now I look forward to her next book. I highly recommend this one.

A Stranger at Fellsworth was a very nicely written story. I felt transported back in time with the author’s descriptions of life in early 1800’s England. It was hard to see the way Annabelle was treated toward the beginning of the book. The actions of her brother and the men he associated with made for such a difficult situation for her.

The main characters, Annabelle and Owen, were very likable and the setting of Surrey was beautiful. There was a gentle romance that brewed just perfectly throughout the pages and an ongoing mystery that waited to be solved. I thought that the balance between the mystery, the romance, and the danger was very well done.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable story. Romance laced with a mystery and set in Regency England. The heroine has to leave everything she's known in a rush and her world is upended. There is so much at stake as she learns someone was murdered at her home the night she left. She should be safe, but is she really? This is an author who only get stronger with each book. This one is on my keeper shelf.

A Stranger at Fellsworth by Sarah Ladd
Timeframe: 1807
Location: London and Surrey, England
Main Characters:
Annabelle
Crosley : Her lady's maid
Thomas: her brother
Owen: Game Keeper
Edmund: Annabelle's uncle and owner of Fellsworth School

Synopsis:

This turns into a series of events which should not be revealed as it would ruin it for anyone intending on reading this delightful book.

Oh, yes, I did like it. The ending was a bit mushy 🙄, but hey, it was still good. Romance, intrigue, conflict and satisfying resolution.

A very very well done book handling a lot of sensitive subjects.
Annabelle is a upper class lady who has endured scandal, a broken engagement and now she is being forced to marry someone who is physically aggressive and makes her feel unsafe. Turning to her brother to try and get him to help doesn't work as he will kick her out if she does not marry the "gentleman"
I love how Annabelle handles the fall from the upper class with grace. Instead of flipping out and going dramatic, she handles the shocks and changes with grace. Finding her place in the world is overwhelming her, but she holds true.
Owen has been betrayed and scandal laces his name but he can't live with himself if he leaves another lady living in fear of a man. How he learns to trust God and allow self forgiveness is amazingly done. I have never read after Sarah before but I will definitely look for her books in the future. Truly a masterpiece.

A new favourite from Sarah Ladd! I loved to recommend Sarah's series 'Whisphers on the Moors'. In fact everyone that came into the book store looking for a historical fiction, I placed one of those books into their hands. She was a little known author to our customers, but there is something about Sarah's writing that draws you deep into the period, the story. However, I have felt a little disconnected to the more recent books by Sarah Ladd, and I have missed the ability her earlier work had to pull me in to a well developed plot.

If you ever could literally feel like a fly on the wall, this is it. You feel like you are right there, living, breathing with the early 1800s going on its daily life around you. That's what I love about this book. I was there in London, while Annabelle was receiving the shut down by the society that had been her friends. I was there as she fled in fear for her future. I was there as she looked about in resigned acknowledgement of her new attic room that she was to share with 3 other servants of Fellsworth School. Life would never be the same for Annabelle Thorley. Attempting to escape and hide from her brother and his attempts to marry her to Mr Bartrell, she comes to accept that her new life may not be what she had dreamed and hoped for. She is free, and with that she starts to reconnect with the memories her mother left behind - of that of her faith. Remembering her mothers prayers, she steps into an unfamiliar path of hope.

With her reuniting with her Uncle & Aunt there is the chance to feel what family should represent. Of course, the new acquaintance of Mr Owen Locke, gamekeeper at the nearby Bancroft Park - develops at a natural pace. Owen has suffered a loss of his own, and knows only too well the cost of scandal that can come to a person.

Unhurried and well descriptive, I enjoyed every page of this book. The minor characters are such a compliment to those who feature more widely, and there was nothing predictable in the plot.

I was touched by this line, a discussion between Annabelle & Owen. (Paraphrased) 'Peace is not determined by your circumstances... Peace is dependent upon where you place your faith.' I truly believe that no matter how we long for our environment or situation to be 'just right' it's false thinking that those things will bring you a measure of true peace in life. Where we place our faith, that is what will carry us through life. Through the darkness as well as the light.

Thank you to Thomas Nelson & Netgalley for the complimentary copy. This is my honest review.

Each book in this series is even better than the previous, and I have loved them all. Each one functions perfectly as a standalone too, so you can jump right in with no problems. Though… I would still recommend reading all three as soon as you have the chance to do so!

In A Stranger at Fellsworth, we once again see the subtle double meaning of treasure. Physically, it refers to an object of value which at least one of the characters prizes highly, whether for sentiment or for monetary worth. Yet, it shines most brilliantly in the reminder that people are often worth far more than they appear at face value. That belonging …. that value … is found in being treasured by even just one person. Someone who sees your worth in its truest sense and cherishes you. This has been my favorite element to the Treasures of Surrey series, and it proves so once again in A Stranger at Fellsworth.

Ladd’s writing style is elegant as well as personable, immersing you in the Regency era with grace and warmth. Characters are superbly developed, and friendships as well as romance add further dimension to their personalities. With each layer that Ladd uncovers, you will love that character even more than you did already.

Bottom Line: A Stranger at Fellsworth is the ideal choice to read while soaking up sun on the beach as well as curled up by a crackling fire as fall approaches. (Ohhhh please let it approach soon. I’m so over summer already lol) With shades of Austen and Bronte tucked away among the pages, this third book in the Fellsworth series is not to be missed!

While the first few chapters took me a bit to get into the storyline and characters, I found overall this book enjoyable to read. The setting reminded me of a Jane Austen book or movie, especially the social aspects, the scandals, and descriptions of England. I especially loved Owens work as a gameskeeper; it added a different aspect compared to many regency reads.

The storyline ended up being more intense than I expected, especially at the end, but it was a pleasant surprise. I didn't quite see how everything would tie together until close to the end, and I found that bit interesting. Crosley's character probably shocked me the most, considering how she seemed toward the beginning.

The romance is quite minimal compared to some romance novels, although at the end there are a few kisses. There wasn't a lot of spiritual content, although a few mentions of faith and prayer. I would have liked if there was a bit more focus on salvation through Jesus Christ, rather than just having faith.

All in all a book I enjoyed. I will definitely be looking into more of this author's books!

Another enjoyable read from Sarah Ladd. This story started out with mystery and a little suspense right from the beginning. I enjoyed Annabelle and Owen seemed thoughtful and dependable. I admired Annabelle's bravery to leave her way of life behind to provide a better situation for herself. I appreciated that there was honesty in telling her change of lifestyle, it wasn't a simple or easy adjustment to move, lose her status and begin a new life. Owen seemed to show up at just the right moments and took on a protector role as well as a friend. There were hints of suspense and some mystery throughout the story. Full review at:

Where to begin!!! This book was amazing! I have read all of Sarah E. Ladd and enjoy her writing style! This book is different from the others because it has a great romance story, brave characters who aren’t afraid to stand up for what they believe, incredible suspense that makes me hold my breath, and action thrown in at the end! Owen Locke, (the main male character), is a DREAM! The way he treats certain characters make me feel as though I am watching a movie!!! VERY CAPTIVATING!!!!
This book is one of my favorites and I will forever be a fan of Sarah E. Ladd!

Peace is not dependent upon your circumstances. It is dependent on where you place your faith. 📚☕

This is book 3 in the Treasures of Surrey series.

At the start of the story, Annabelle Thorley is a thoughtful, kind, caring, but hesitant young woman who is placing her faith in all the wrong places. She quickly realizes that being in the care of her despicable brother is not the safest place to be - unless she wants to be forced to marry wealthy, but an even more despicable + ancient man.

Could losing everything be the best thing to happen to Annabelle Thorley?

Spoiler -> Yes, yes it is. 😊

I enjoyed the mystery and intrigue against an ominous Regency-era backdrop. 🎉

We’ve got poachers, rumors of murderous activity, rude people, and creepy strangers showing up often. But there’s also an adorable nine-year-old girl, and a very loving, welcoming Aunt and Uncle (that I just wanted to hug and hang out with). 😂

My favorite character, the MMC’s sassy old housekeeper, a rumored sorceress, didn’t make enough appearances in my opinion.

This book had more faith content than the other two in the series.. Not the most intriguing plot, but I enjoyed it a lot.

Triggers: a man found shot, abusive slap from young adult brother to young adult sister, fighting, infidelity stories, fights among men

Regency is my absolute favorite period and setting, but it is no secret that it is perhaps not as genteel as we may like to think when we romanticize it. This novel illustrates that well: forced to flee into the unknown by terrible circumstances, Annabelle escapes to a new life very different from the one she left. All the rules seem to have changed with her new station and as she navigates this unfamiliar territory she discovers that much she thought knew in the past was mere illusion.

The tension between manners and the realities of life is pulled almost to the breaking point in Ladd's latest work. The genteel upper classes and the thin line women are forced to walk is shown as a drastic and unforgiving taskmaster; I am even a bit shocked to discover that I don't think I'd want to live there. To know that a simple mistake, or a rumor of one, could end in ruin, in my being a pickpocket just to survive, simply because I didn't have male protection, is unfathomable to me. Or worse yet, to be at the mercy of a man who should be my protector, but who instead sees me as a means to his own happy ending without considering my wishes or welfare.

The author's skill is incredible; she obviously knows the period well and has done her homework—lots of it—but she never beats the reader over the head with a textbook. I studied Austen and the Regency in several college courses, have read more since then, but I learned a few new things as I enjoyed the tidbits that are well-integrated into the story. I actually put the book down and went to look something up that I had never before heard of, and that one small detail opened my eyes and gave me mental images I had not had previously. I love when fiction comes alive for me, and this book does.

The descriptions of people and the setting are so vivid I found myself physically recoiling from the page in disgust as if I could distance Annabelle from the grotesque man her brother wanted her to accept. I could see and hear and even smell him and it was not a pleasant experience! Likewise, the fresh country air, the school grounds, and the characters at Fellsworth came alive as I immersed myself in this novel.

This is a fantastic story of finding out who you are made to be and what you are made to do. Part of that is a strong commentary on both Regency society and our own, that no one should tell you who you must be, how you must look, who you must marry. My daughters are still a bit young for this novel, but already are feeling the pressures of peers and people in society to look or behave a certain way. This will be one book I place in their hands as entertainment, but pray a deeper message takes root, that they are who God designed them to be and He is the one to direct their paths.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is an outstanding story with deep implications, but the storytelling never suffers from trying to convey a message; instead, it flows naturally from the plot and realistic characters who captured my heart from the first chapters. Historical fans who enjoy romance and a bit of suspense will not be disappointed. While Ladd's work has long been on my keeper shelf, with this book she is now one whose books I will buy simply because her name is on the cover—whatever she writes always seems to exceed any expectations I may have had before I began reading.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and publisher but no compensation for this review. I was not required to write a positive one and all of the opinions expressed are both completely my own and honest.

"Let her know love, and let her know the peace that comes with forgiveness. Keep her safe from those who wish to harm her, and give her strength as she faces life's challenges."

A mother's prayer, nearly prophetic in its plea before the the Almighty God; for Annabelle Thorley's life is pitifully bereft of love, overflowing with the kind of desperation that only a young woman with an uncertain future can bear . Following the death of both parents and pursuant rumors of her father's scandalous business affairs, Annabelle's brother insists on forcing a marriage between Annabelle and a very wealthy man whom she despises. Trusting that an estranged aunt and uncle will give her shelter, Annabelle and her former lady's maid flee London with the help of a virtual stranger, Owen Locke, the games keeper of an estate bordering the grounds of the Fellsworth School that her uncle manages.

As Annabelle settles into her new life as a teacher, her acquaintance with the handsome widower who is the games keeper strengthens. Owen's young daughter is a student at Fellsworth, giving him reason to frequent the grounds on a regular basis in order to visit her. Along with managing the natural resources of a vast estate, Owen's job also includes uncovering and apprehending a stealthy ring of poachers who have been taking advantage of the surrounding properties. As a result, neither Annabelle or Owen could have possibly foreseen how their past, present and futures could have melded into the path now set before them.

Annabelle's mother had been right all along, "peace was not dependent upon your circumstances. It was dependent upon where you placed your faith."

I received a copy of this book from the author and her publisher. The opinions stated are entirely my own.
