Ranger Academy - Shadow of the Tyrant King: A Middle Grade Epic Fantasy Adventure

Rate this book
Harry Potter meets Lord of the Rings. Embark on an unforgettable journey filled with magic, adventure, and the triumph of friendship over evil!

Jack Sawyer knows many things, like the names of all the state capitals and how to tell an agate from a plain old rock. But there’s much he doesn’t know. He doesn’t know how to shoot sparks by snapping his fingers or ride a galloping horse through the mud and over fences. And he really doesn’t know how to hurl a spear, wield a sword, or track mythical creatures through an enchanted forest.

But that all changes when one day he discovers he can somehow levitate a basketball and send it flying around the school gymnasium. That’s when he feels the Quickening, and with it a whole new world opens up for him. To harness his new abilities, Jack must go to Ranger Academy in a magical place called the Midwald, where he will concoct potions, race horses, and track fierce creatures.

But the Midwald is not without its dangers. Ten peaceful years have passed since the cruel wizard, Arazad, was cast down from the throne and the Commonwealth was established. Now danger lurks throughout the land. It grows in the shadows of castle ruins and forgotten ancient strongholds. Evil forces are gathering strength, and this time they will not be denied!

Can Jack and his friends defeat the powers of darkness and prevent the return of the Tyrant King?

It'll be the adventure of a lifetime - if he survives!

Perfect for fans of Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, and A Wizard of Earthsea!

To be honest, I got this book as a free Kindle promotion. I have read most of the Ranger’s Apprentice series by John Flanagan and enjoyed them all. I expected this might be an attempt to imitate him but since it did not cost me any money, I downloaded it to my Kindle. I can now say that the author was not trying to imitate the Ranger’s Apprentice series. This author has written a book for young adults but can be enjoyed by adults also about the struggles of a young boy to find himself and learn new skills in a very magical world with all sorts of creatures and characters. The academy setting also allows the author to bring in many friends of the main character, Jack, which were also interesting to read about along with the usual bullies of any coming of age story. A nice and interesting story that I would recommend to both kids and adults.

Excellent

This is a very exciting adventure. The characters are amazing and fun to get to know. The world the author built is wonderful and terrifying at once. I wouldn't mind spending more time there.
