Refusing the dictator is usually a good way to wind up at the bottom of the cliff yourself, though, so Niall sets himself to the impossible task of keeping his mistress happy while plotting his escape. With his peek behind the curtain comes the realization there's more to the White Lady than he ever knew - and that the world threatens Lorellan more than its citizens suspect.

A pretty fun read. The main character is charismatic without being annoying. The world is very interesting, the city being a decrepit pace with everyone constantly rushing to make sure it doesn't fall apart. I very much enjoyed the tension at the start of the story. The main problem to me was the antagonist. Their motivation was weak and the final confrontation was a bit unsatisfying. Still, it's a pretty quick read that's mostly good throughout.

a fast-paced and clever sci-fi thriller with a lot of heart and compelling character work. The worldbuilding sets an intriguing stage. The story follows Niall, a maintenance worker who witnesses a terrifying underground execution shortly before he is tapped to become the new lieutenant--to the powerful and terrifying leader of Lorellan, known only as the Mistress. Niall is drawn into her world of intrigue and subterfuge, and just when he thinks he's got a handle on it, everything comes crashing down...
I really loved this book! I highly recommend it.
