3.5 taboo stars
Well this was… something 🤣.
In terms of taboo, I feel like this is a good one to try if you wanna dip your toes into something forbidden 😅.
Consider my toes wet and submerged 🤣.
This starts off in the past when Pike and Rhys are kids (in the present they’re both 19). They’re fraternal twins, but here’s the twist: they’re from different dads 😬. When their dad finds out he’s only fathered Pike and Rhys is from a different man, he kicks Rhys and their mom out. Rhys has made a valiant effort to protect Pike from their “dad’s” wrath all these years. But when they get kicked out, he’s no longer able to protect her ☹️.
And she needed protecting; their father was abusive to her ☹️, especially in pedo ways.
Fast forward to the present. Their mom has un alived herself and Rhys is back. Pike’s dad is the hockey coach, and Rhys excels at playing. Her dad’s gonna have to deal with Rhys now that he’s older and stronger. No more pushing around.
But now Rhys is set on getting back at his sister 😬. She’s lived a privileged life, living in a mansion, eating every day, not dealing with their mother’s mental health issues or drug addiction.
On top of the hatred he feels for her, he also have desire… and love. He’ll show her how much he “hates” her by all means, including the desire he has to claim her body.
And he doesn’t care whether she wants him back 😈.
What I liked/loved: potential spoilers
—dual v’s 😉. Love me a man that has remained celibate 💁🏻♀️. He could’ve easily been a manhooooar, but he refrained 👏🏻 as he should 💁🏻♀️
—the 🔥. Uff. This was spiiiiiicy AF 🥵. The way Rhys is obsessed with making Pike 💦 should be illegal 🫠. We need to make sure Pike has enough fluids in her body 🤣. Maybe get her an IV drip 🤡 (one time, she literally passes out from exhaustion 💀. Now I wanna pass out from exhaustion too 😐😑… 🤣🤣🤣)
—non, dub, and somno phi lia 😅. Lordt. Help me 🤣. Rhys gives no Fs whether or not Pike wants it 😅. She doesn’t even have to be awake 🫣. He’ll still make sure to take care of her though 👏🏻. What a prince 🤡
—MINEMINEMINE 😈. And don’t you forget it 💁🏻♀️. Any competition will be death with 💅
—the sweet stuff 🫶. Even though there’s resentment, there’s a lot of sweet memories and a bond unlike any other

What I didn’t like/wanted more of: SPOILERS
—although this is “taboo”, it didn’t FEEL very taboo-y. The way people just made assumptions or asked how the 🔥 so naturally made it seem as if this is normal 🤷🏻♀️. There was a little bit of sneaking around, but it felt more about doing the deed versus hiding because they’re siblings 😅
—more of the sweet stuff, especially in the past 😐. I loved the flashback chapters. Give me more 🥹😭
—it isn’t until 98% that Rhys finally enters Pike the “normal” way 😳 (her vagina versus her 🫏). I wasn’t understanding his need to always have her flipped around on her belly, until I understood 😳. And when I realized it, I wanted to pray for her starfish 🫣😅. She’s a V and that’s the way he’s been taking her the whole time??? Like 😳. Cut her some slack (or at least get some Lube💦… 🤣)
—no epilogue 😐. I need my epilogue 😭
—slapping her (face) 🥴. Yeah. I’m not a fan of that.
Overall, this was an enjoyable read. It’s the first to pop my “real” taboo cherry

What to expect
- FM dark romance, fraternal twins with a twist, both are 19 years old
- dual V, both are broken and have trauma
- short, spicy read, light 🍞ing
- the TW is long (NC / DC, drugg1ng, SA, Domestical V, Eating Disorder, Dealing with a parent that has a heavy addiction, spiders are mentioned 😶, violence, etc etc etc)
- they definitely are obsessed with eachother, she has a boyfriend at the start of the book but wasn't feeling the right things in that relationship (not sure actually what happened with him, he wasn't mentioned anymore after a certain point) --> this happened because they were completely separated for a few years, by their parents
- HFN!? (Not sure, it lacks a proper epilogue, but I assume they will be mentioned in the upcoming books since it seems it will be a series; I'm not wondering about them as a couple, it's clear they are IT for eachother; the problem is with the legal consequences after that last chapter👀😅)
The spicy scenes were rushed, in my opinion, and I understand that the shock factor should have been wow for this type of read, but definitely some of those scenes were not close to reality (especially the 🍑 scenes without any proper prep / lube; damn, that poor girl).
Otherwise, the plot was interesting, that town is surely twisted, and I am definitely curious about the hinted other couples.
They had awful parents, and both were abusive in different ways with one of the twins, so Pi and Rhys really, really wanted to break the chain of their grim family history! I got the feeling that they were literally hearing those voices they mentioned, and I'm not surprised at all! 😅
I wanted to know who his father is!? Maybe we will find in the next books, who knows. I hope there's a reason why they have different fathers, besides the obvious 😂. More depth on that part of the story is needed!
How did they manage to escape the consequences of that last scene with her father!? How!? So many questions, no answers 😶.

I will always support this author from the bottom of my heart, but this one didn't work for me as much as some of her other books.
Pike felt very similar to Twin Flame except the latter did what it was trying to do much better.
One of the issues I had was that .

Ok guys this one was definitely a good taboo one.

Twisted love
Tab00 relationship with a heavy dose of 0bsessive love.
This is a quick read with little character development, though there is enough to sympathize with the couple.
I would have loved greater exploration in their relationship and communication - especially re: the FMC’s ED. It plays a huge role in her life but it’s never discussed with the MMC. This would have been an excellent hurt/comfort piece where he supported her recovery. Revenge was not enough.
This is fast burn and high on the sm.t factor.

I loved this! It's dark 😈 depraved and taboo AF, but I couldn't get enough and devoured it in one sitting!!
I love dark romances, the darker the better 😏

The best fall time, taboo, dark vibes ever. Rhys is so mean in the hottest way 😍😩 Ive never been let down by this authors books. She writes so well and sends her readers head first into the darkest desires that haunt many of us. Such an enjoyable read. Cannot wait to see what else she comes out with in the future!❤️🔥

This book had potential but it just didn't get there. This review has spoilers.
Fraternal twins are when the twins are not identical. It doesn't mean that they have different fathers. The fact that they are boy/girl twins tells you they are fraternal. It's very rare that twins would have different dads but it can happen; it's just not called fraternal.
The author uses the word inky to describe their hair, which is great the first time or two but it's used so often it gets distracting. Using the same adjective over and over is annoying.
The h has an eating disorder but the H never finds out about it. That's weird. That's usually something the H would find out about and then worry over just like the csa.
The father's end didn't make sense. Why bother with a venomous spider if you're going to beat him to death? And putting it in his mouth and taping it shut makes no sense. He's going to end up swallowing it instead of getting bit. And why tape him to the chair if they gave him ghb?
Like I said, it had potential. I think an editor could really help this book. I would pull it back and have some work done and republish.
I think experience will help this author and we will see some good books from her in the future.

Like I said, it had potential. I think an editor could really help this book. I would pull it back and have some work done and republish.
I think experience will help this author and we will see some good books from her in the future.

Pike by A. Briar is a dark taboo romance. This is the first book in the St. Charles Hockey series.
I was pulled in from the first chapter and couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. I really enjoyed getting Rhys and Pike's points of views throughout the book.
I would recommend this book if you're looking for a taboo romance, dark romance, gothic romance, or bully romance.

If I ever crave a taboo book this is what I need!!
It’s crazy enough to work and enjoy the connection between the MCs that you don’t care about relation you just want them to solve the problems keeping them apart.
I was being edged so HARD for the first half of the book I was screaming at my bestie I couldn’t handle it and had to take breaks… my girl did so good with this book that I long for an epilogue 🫠 but I’m very satisfied that Rhys took care of Pikes problem and they no longer have to worry and get to be happy.
Keep doing what you’re doing A cause it is talent and the acknowledgments 😭😭 thank you boo! I am happy to continue supporting you and this journey your on 😘

I couldn't get enough of Pike. It's everything forbidden and taboo. I literally couldn't put this book down. The darker, the better, and PIKE is over the top dark. If you love taboo topics, then you want to check out my NEW, FAVORITE taboo author A. Briar out. I not only liked the characters in this book, but I loved the storyline and plot. I was hooked from beginning to end. I give this book a 10/10 for the characters, the plot, and the spice. This had a lot of great potential, but the execution wasn't great. For him to go from loving her completely to hating her for no reason felt very forced. Also, the sex scenes( which let's be honest, this is a taboo book, of course that's what we're here for)were short and confusing. They don't actually have sex until the very last 3 pages of the book, but I wasn't sure if they'd had sex or not before then because they had what I *think* it was anal before that, but the writing was so vague and confusing, I legitimately didn't know. The only way I assume that was the first time was because it was spelled out. Idk, I'd give another book by this author a chance.

This is my first arc book that I received from the author 🤗. Devoured this book in one day ✔️. The twin flame between Pike & Rhys was well done 🔥 . & the trigger/tropes list at the beginning of the book had me ready to jump in 😜. I can’t wait for the triplets book 😮💨! Well done A.Briar

It’s dark and taboo. Similar gothic vibes as Twin Flame but add in hockey and more revenge. If you read Twin Flame by this author you’ll like this one. Nice, quick pace, with a satisfying ending.

This was taboo romance at its finest! I loved Pike and Rhys' relationship. The one thing I will say was that communication could have taken care of a lot of Rhys hate, but honestly, I think it just made it that much hotter, but that's my opinion.

Very Taboo!! Very dark look up triggers before you read. But I love A Briars writing style I will say I thought this was going to be longer than it was but was the right length for me in the end. Don't read Taboo that often but A Briar is among my favourites

I do this to myself and need to stop. I keep trying this author because of the taboo relationships and the glowing posts on FB, but once again the writing and execution of decent ideas is not good. This one is longer than the other ones I tried, but still falls short in world-building and all areas of development. It also needs editing and basic research - I don't think the author understands that boy/girl twins cannot be identical twins, scientifically, and it is not needed to explain to other people that they are fraternal, or think that the only reason they are not identical twins is their size - granted, a relatively small thing compared to everything else, but it annoyed me more as all the issues piled in. I eventually started skimming to get it over with. Again, I think the author has good ideas and there is definitely a market for taboo, especially right now, but - and I mean this in the nicest way, truly - I think this author needs to take some fiction/creative writing classes to do justice to their ideas.

Hm, this could’ve been better but it was cool. There was something missing in this story, and I couldn’t figure out what it was. I also wish I would’ve skipped the dang trigger warnings because I expected this to be DARKer. I mentally prepared for nothing😂 Still, I enjoyed reading their version of love for one another.
