A Curse for Christmas

Rate this book
"Christmas Eve was off to a rough start, and that was before I was cursed by a Christmas cookie."

Jinny’s not home for Christmas, and she’s fine with that. So what if she’s spending yet another Christmas Eve endlessly enchanting drinks at the café where she works, only to go home to an empty apartment? She’s definitely okay, no matter how many people keep asking—will people stop asking, please??

But when an old lady gives Jinny a Christmas cookie and she shares it with her coworker and friend Tate, things get a little complicated. Complicated as in the cookie was cursed and suddenly Jinny and Tate are madly in love with each other. Um, awkward.

Now Jinny and Tate are spending a snowy Christmas Eve searching for a cure, but as the night goes on, Jinny struggles to tell the curse from her true feelings. She and Tate need a Christmas miracle, because even dragon magic and peppermint hot chocolate might not be enough to fix this…

A Curse for Christmas is an all sugar and no spice novella.

Oh wait, this was super cute?? And way too short! I totally would have enjoyed this book being longer because 80 pages wasn’t enough, haha! Not too much to say about it but I found myself smirking often and really enjoying this Christmas novella. The setting like like our modern-day world, but there magic and dragons so it was fun. I would definitely read another book set in this world! (Also, I just found out that the paperback copy of this book has illustrations, so obviously I have to get that!) This was a really pleasant cozy Christmas fantasy book! 💗

Main Content-
As the title gives away, our main character is cursed in Christmas Eve by a cookie given to her by a stranger; Jinny shares the cookie with her co-worker and they both have a magical sensation that has them in love with the other; In this world, magic and dragons are normal (with some families like Jinny’s having dragons as pets) and some can enchant others or items like Jinny can with teas/coffees (due to the hint of magic in her bloodline and she adds comfort enchantments to people’s drinks); Enchantments that give negative feelings are curses and are illegal to do (the falling in love one is a rare positive feeling curse, but still illegal to do).

God and the story of the first Christmas are mentioned a few times in positive lights (Tate says “God willing” and talks about the One who can do miracles; Jinny and Tate both recall their families’ traditions of reading the Bible about the first coming of their Savior).

No major language is used, but there is a mention of Jinny’s grandmother adding “some color” in her words; Otherwise words like “gah” is used a handful of times and other things like “stars” and “stars above” are said; “Butt” is used twice when referring to someone’s bottom; Sarcasm & Eye rolling.

1 almost kiss,
2 kisses with no details,
1 kiss lasting a couple sentences,
1 kiss lasting a few sentences;
Wanting to touch, embrace, & kiss (up to a sentence or two);
Touches, Embraces, Hand holding, Nearness, Flutters, Smelling, & Noticing (up to a couple/few sentences).

Jinny and Tate share a quick kiss after being cursed to see if it eliminates their feelings; A flash of jealousy; Mentions of kisses, kissing, & a kiss to break the curse; A few mentions of crushes.

this was literally one of the cutest things I’ve ever read! it should have probably been, I don’t know, a million pages longer so I can get more Jinny and Tate moments, but I guess about a 100 pages will have to do…😢

we’re going to ignore the fact that I read this in August…I was in a Christmasy mood and am sick and tired of the heat and just want it to be Christmas already…so a girl’s gotta work with what she’s got. for me it’s a kindle unlimited subscription and a cutesy Christmas romance. don’t judge me!

even though this was so short, the world building was amazing! I wish I could find more cozy fantasies set in a contemporary setting. I honestly think it takes tremendous skill to write books like that and have them work so flawlessly. not once did I sniff or snort thinking how ‘unrealistic’ anything was. it just felt so right!

now I have a little word to say to our dear Tate. *clears throat* *breathes in deeply* *audience braces themselves*

how did this little nerdy-pop worm his way into my heart in less than 100 pages???? (granted, it only took like 10 pages for me to fall for Kai Azer, but that’s a different story) I practically melted into a puddle of chocolate when I read that he and Jinny had to go on an ice cream run and he got strawberry ‘cus it reminded him of her hair! and that he loves to read! and he gave Jinny the last peppermint stick because he knew she loved those in her coco. it’s the simple things that made my heart just thrum.

safe to say, after Moonflower: An Alorith Alliances Short Story, and now this, I will read anything Anna Christine writes. please write something long and big and full of fluffy romance and sweet characters! I’m dying for moooorrreee!

꒰❄️꒱ quotes (minor spoilers)

My lovesick mind forced me to acknowledge he smelled like books and peppermint, and wow was it a good combo.

”I didn’t fall in love with you this morning when I ate that cookie. The feelings of infatuation and wanting to stare all the time, yeah, that was new. But the falling in love? Jinny, that happened a long time ago.”

”Wink at you?” He was such a nerd. “Yeah, like this.” He demonstrated with a smirk. An annoyingly attractive nerd.

Two years of smiles and memories floated through my mind. That one time we were both stuck working extra shifts, and by the time we were done cleaning for the day, we were lying on the bookstore’s floor, laughing at every tiny thing because we were both so tired. Or that summer where our air conditioner had broken, and Quinn had sent Tate and me on an ice cream run. We’d decided to pick each other’s ice cream flavor, and I’d picked pistachio for him in an effort to be mean (it didn’t work, he loves pistachio), and he’d picked strawberry for me. When I asked if there was a reason, he’s shrugged and said strawberries always remind him of my hair.

I don’t like romcoms and I don’t like Hallmark movies, but when I tell you I utterly and completely adore this book, I mean it from the bottom of my heart. I was smiling the whole time I read it, and it made me laugh SO MUCH. The dialogue was great and both Jinny and Tate are SO ADORABLE it was impossible not to like them from the start. I can’t wait to read more books from Anna Christine in the future! 😍

I read this in one day, and it was amazing!

One of the things I loved most about this story was that the narrative voice was so strong; I could tell Anna wrote this, which was so neat!

The plot was also well executed, and the banter between Jinny and Tate was perfection! Truly, I don’t know if there’s a more adorable Christmas story. And I LOVE all the illustrations.

Overall, a wonderful book to have on my shelf and treasure for years to come. I see many more rereads in the future 💛

Super cute and sweet, this is the perfect little Christmas romance!

The setting/world was SO unique in that it’s fantasy, with different countries and dragons and magic, but contemporary with its cafes and cars and modern clothing, and I loved how cozy yet natural these two felt blended together while also being totally magical. The Christmas vibes were vibing along with the sweetness of the romance that had me smiling and snickering all the way through.

Jinny and Tate are so cute yet real in their insecurities and vulnerability with each other, and I ended up loving them a lot.

I’ll definitely be keeping an eye for this author’s future works and in the meantime I’ll hopefully get my hands on the ones that are already out! Such a delightful story I know I’ll visit again during Christmas time and not when I need a sweet read.

My Christmas stars! 🎄

I read this in one sitting on a quiet Sunday evening, hot chocolate in hand and I could NOT stop reading… or grinning. The Cheshire Cat had nothing on me, haha! I can’t remember the last time a book made me smile that much… and I so needed it. 🥹

Anna crafted a sweet & fluffy Hallmark-y story that doesn’t feel cheesy! Two coworkers who have been friends for years are cursed to fall in love by a Christmas cookie… or are they? Jinny & Tate are precious and guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.

And I need a physical copy asap because THE ILLUSTRATIONS!

If you’re looking for a sweet, short holiday read with cosy atmosphere, fun fantasy elements, and alllllll the wholesome swoony romance, YOU NEED THIS BOOK! 💛

I blame this one entirely on the bookish community. It popped up from an author I follow, and I immediately fell in love with the cover and concept. 💖 It was time to take a chance.

I'm so glad I did! It's seriously the most wholesome, adorable thing I've read in ages. Talk about all the Christmas feels, and just pure, soft delight.

I'm sure I'll be shoving it in friends and random strangers faces and re-reading it every season I get the chance. 💖

Please read this story--you won't regret it!

"Maybe the moral of this story is ‘Don’t share cookies with anyone, because you never know whether they might be cursed or not.’”
“Ah yes, the perfect moral to practice at Christmas time: don’t share.”
“Exactly. Glad you agree.”

ok somebody tell me how I went into this knowing it's about a cursed cookie and yet the fantasy element surprised me 😂 this was so cute! a perfect little sugar cookie of a story, really. Jinny and Tate were adorable, the magic system was fascinating; I'd absolutely read more stories set in this world! (And the way the Bible is still present and part of Christmas? I'm 100% for it, more of this please lol)

something I can't define makes me hesitate to give it 5 stars so it's a 4.5 but I loved it! maybe my heart wishes it was longer. I don't know. but I'm glad I read it, and it's perfect holiday reading!

Um, hello? I need a sequel, a spin-off series, a movie adaptation, and a five-season holiday special with these characters! Jinny and Tate were just so stinking cute! I can’t even begin to explain how much I loved this story. And yes, I did read it for Christmas in July, but now I’m thinking I might have to reread it in December. I really loved the contemporary-esque setting with fantastical elements sprinkled throughout. Plus, yes, there was a dragon. Somebody needs to tell this amazing author to sit down and write a full-length novel, because I have been absolutely enjoying her writing recently and really, really want to spend some more time in her worlds. =D

Romance isn’t my typical go-to, but I decided to pick up this novella and I’m so glad I did! It’s just what you need if you’re looking for adorable cozy fantasy with fun characters and a cute plot. And I laughed out loud SEVERAL times, which is always fun.

I will definitely be eagerly awaiting Anna Christine’s next story!

I really enjoyed and loved this! I do think it is best to read around Christmas time but you will enjoy it regardless any time of the year! The characters were cute and it was humorous with a nice message in the middle. It was a bit too romantic or kissy for my tastes but it wasn’t descriptive at all so it was squeaky clean. Just not my tastes lol. But I totally recommend…I really enjoyed it!! <333

Christmas Eve was off to a rough start, and that was before I was cursed by a Christmas cookie.

“Do you like working at Sips? Living in Nishiona? Does any of it make you happy?” Other than you?… Stupid curse.

he’d switched out his contacts for glasses. I’d teased him, saying he looked more bookish with the glasses and he should wear them more often if he wanted to give off a writer- y vibe. His only response was a rolling of his eyes and a vow to never wear them in public. In truth, he was unfairly attractive with glasses, and I wished he’d wear them more just for my sake. Gah.

Enchanted cup of hot chocolate

A wryly sweet cozy fantasy-romance novella that hits all the right notes and leaves you feeling like you drank one of Jinny’s enchanted cups of hot chocolate.

Both of the main characters have happy families!? The modern urban fantasy setting has loads of wonder and spine-tingling dragons?!!

Please please release more stories in this world!

I gave this a 4 star rating initially because it’s a feather light little confection but on second thoughts I can’t imagine improving it, so I’m giving it 5. And this from someone who doesn’t always adore low stakes cozy. I think it was the side helping of atmospheric world building and wonder that tipped it over the line for me.

Adorable, sweet, amusing, and just so much fun. I especially loved the characters, the modern-fantasy-in-another-world originality, and all the Christmassy vibes! A book that has a bookstore, a starry dragon, AND peppermint has got to be a fun one. Plus, I mean, it's amazing how much fun fit into a novella. Great for anyone looking for a quick, cozy fantasy read around Christmas. ^_^

This book was cute 🥰 There really wasn’t anything I had an issue with, I just feel like it wasn’t really my style.
I enjoyed both of the main characters and I thought the plot was pretty evenly paced. Not a ton happened in this book, but I think that if you want to read a sweet, clean, Christmas romance book that’s very clean this could be it! I would have enjoyed a little more world building, I was a little confused when a world combines trucks and dragons 🤪 but again, the world building wasn’t really the purpose of the book :) I did enjoy the Christmas theme and the bookshop, I also felt like for the plot line the length was perfect. I would be interested to read other books set in this world!

I would say 13-15+ There is some kissing and a few affectionate/romantic gestures that I found a little much but it was still super clean!

This won't be much of a review and you will notice there isn't a star rating.
I knew going into this it had magic (it had a lot), which I usually avoid. I read it because my youngest sister adores it. I can see why she loves it. Sweet and cute.
This isn't a book I would choose for myself but I can see why people love it.

Such a cute little Christmas story! I don’t seek out romcoms, but I enjoyed every page of this charming little book. I kept making myself slow down because I didn’t want to finish it too quickly. The writing voice is endearing, the story world delightful, and the characters are oh-so-cute. Reading this book is like taking a bite out of a Christmas cookie—you know from the start it’s going to be super sweet, but that’s what you came for. And some of the flavors might surprise you. There were a few scenes that tugged more of my heartstrings than I was expecting. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for more from this author.

I loved how quick this book was! I finished it in less than two hours and loved every minute of it! Jinny and Tate were so cute when they were cursed and even when the curse was broken. What an unexpected Christmas Eve they had! I love the little bits of magic that were in this book. From curses and spells to adding enchantments into coffee drinks and dragons! I didn’t expect all that to be in a book with less than 100 pages. I’m a fan of the bookstore/coffee shop setting in books, add in romance and it’s a win! I definitely recommend this book if you are looking for a short cute romancey magical Christmas book.
