Discarded Unit Six

Rate this book
When ExaGen Medical found a way to create advanced humanoid robotic units, the world changed.

Robust androids with the logic of humans could be produced en masse; nearly overnight, hundreds of thousands of robots replaced all manner of jobs. From cashiers to security to military, there were very few industries untouched by these androids.

The android line ExaSix was mass-produced and marketed as the perfect bodyguards - Unit ExaSix-0118 malfunctioned, and the entire line was scrapped.

Discarded, the last of the Unit Six series cannot outrun the past, but they may be able to carve out a future.

My initial review was going to be a 3.5 but after thinking about it longer, I'm gonna bump it to a 4.

I really enjoyed reading this and it's going to be on my mind for a long while, that much im certain about. It dragged me in and made me locked in all the way to the end.

The story has a lot going for it, but I'm going to try and break it into two parts
Likes;
- Exasix Unit 118 (?) Fantastic character, well crafted android personality. Honestly, the manner in which you wrote this android might be the highlight of the series for me. I loved reading his dialogues, the interlude, everything.
- The dynamic between Mara and the unit (I'll refer to him as Noah moving forward) is also well done, though a little clunky at the beginning.
- The whole family unit in that building, ergo, Evie, Mara, Claribel, and Kobe. I enjoyed their interactions together, and it gave a certain sense of warmth to the whole setting, especially when Noah gets added to the mix.
- Once the story has its hooks in you, I admit it becomes very hard to put down. And I don't know if it's how you wrote it but I quite literally binged it to the end.

Questionables;
- While things happen relatively fast, it took about three chapters before the story got its hook into me. Until then, it felt a little like a slog.
- Mara has a character on her own leaves a lot to be desired for me. She bounces well with others but I find her to be drab by herself. And thats not to say I love the rest immensely, but at least there's an interesting angle with them.
- Certain story decisions didn't land too well, I think. It served the overall purpose but I do believe they could have been explored a little more.

All in all, it's been a lovely time. And can't wait to see more from you.

I really enjoyed the core mystery behind this world and these characters. The setting, a deep and troubling future world of great devastation and disparity, uses some of the staple tropes of dystopian fiction to set the stage for a very human story with a cast of lovable characters. I really love Mara, who is spunky and imaginative despite the massive trauma and hardship she's experienced, and it shows through in her friendships with the other folk in her little found family. Noah--ExaGen Six, etc.,--is also written with a lot of humanity, for an ominous reason. I liked that this story did not shy away from the ugly bits of such a dystopia but left the reader with some hope for change yet to come.

Great sci fi adventure

But I should have paid more attention to the book being listed under dystopian fiction. Although I liked the characters and basic story, the horror elements took me by surprise. I'm not a horror fan. There are many heartwarming moments that offset the ugliness in this world. The story ended abruptly on a possibly hopeful note.
