This has all the short stories and novellas in this series, as well as one new one just for this publication.

"Changeling" - 4 stars - Was not expecting this to be a Niles POV. He has one of the best character arcs throughout the series, and was a surprisingly interesting character, if frustrating at the start. And I remember not trusting his reform for a very long time on my first read. So getting a story from his POV that starts with the birth of the twins and skips over the years up to Whyborne's defection from the family was a treat. Well, it was also painful and frustrating, because he's very much a product of his time with the "men can't show emotions" and stiff-upper lip nonsense. If he'd just shown his wife and son how he really felt, things could have gone differently and some crises could have been avoided. But alas, here we are.

Undertow - 3.5 stars - I wasn't expecting to ever read this one, but I ended up enjoying it. Well, most of it. I'm still not thrilled at the idea of all those sharp teeth and claws near or in certain sensitive areas. I can't say Hawk has ever successfully sold me on the idea that there are humans who would willingly bang uglies with sea monsters. I mean, the smell alone... But that aside (and I did mostly skip that scene) I did like seeing this from Maggie's POV. She's always been a favorite but oft overlooked character in the series, so it was nice to see how she's handling all this, learning about magic and the ketoi and everything else. She's sweet, yes, but also very smart (when it's not about her employer's love life) and capable at getting things done on her own, even if she doesn't quite believe that about herself at first. And seeing Mr. Quinn is always a treat, even when he's being weird and creepy in Whyborne's office while Whyborne is gone. (I do NOT want to know what he did with that handkerchief.)

A must-have if you love the Whyborne & Griffin series!
Not to mention how beautiful this cover is!

Changeling is written in Niles Whyborne's POV, about Percival's birth, childhood and youth. It contains spoilers, so at least read Widdershins first.

Rescued is a heartwarming story about how Saul came into Griffin's life. It felt extra special reading next to my own sweet rescue cat. They really do enrich our lives.
I would recommend to read this after Widdershins as well.

As written in the introduction, Home immediately follows Widdershins. It's Whyborne and Griffin's first Christmas together, told in Griffin's POV.

Eidolon is also written in Griffin's POV.
My thoughts after reading it:
I love that Whyborne and Griffin are so kind and sweet, and at the same time, flawed. They're also brave, despite their weaknesses.
Whyborne is shy and clumsy, and Griffin has his own insecurities and baggage.
Takes place between Widdershins and Threshold.

Carousel is one of my favorite short stories in this collection. It takes place between the events of Stormhaven and Necropolis.
My thoughts:
Creepy, heartwarming and even a bit steamy.
It amazes me how such a short story can be packed with so much suspense. You'd think that it would feel rushed or lack something, but Hawk's writing skills are awe-inspiring.

Remnant is the reason why I started reading this series 10 years ago. Something about it caught my eye, and I'm so glad it did!
It's co-written with the amazing KJ Charles.
Whyborne and Griffin make a stop in England on their way to Egypt, where the events of Necropolis will take place. They meet KJ Charles' characters Caldwell and Feximal and must solve a mysterious case together.

Harmony is another short and sweet Christmas story. Griffin is so romantic! Read after Bloodline.

In Undertow we read from sweet Miss Parkhurst's POV. It's set during the events of Fallow. My thoughts:
You know you've created a great universe when you write an excellent story without any of the main characters.
I've loved Miss Parkhurst and Persephone since the first time they were mentioned. It was such a delight to follow their adventure.
Also, I'm a huge fan of Mr. Quinn and the librarians!

This book contains the following stories:

Changeling
Rescued
Home
Eidolon
Carousel
Remnant - co-written with K.J. Charles
Harmony
Undertow

I might remember to add the reviews for the other stories in here as I read them, but right now, I am using this solely for Changeling, as it is not available by itself anywhere that I've seen.

It is from Niles' point of view, starts 27 years before the start of Widdershins and has spoilers - and fills in some of Percival's backstory that you likely won't care a bit about if you don't know the series. Do not read this short story first, even if you are a chronological order purist. It does not work as a good introduction to the series (seriously, start with Widdershins, please) but it is interesting.

I never wanted a Niles POV story, but…it is interesting to read about his thoughts and feelings on Percival and just how toxic his masculinity is. Over all, I found it interesting (there's that word, again) and I did like the look at young Percival (and his surprising backbone of steel) but this wasn't actually…needed.

(Side note: This hardcover bindup is gorgeous and I really, really want to rebuy the entire series like this. As I'm planning on a series long reread in 2024, this might be the right time to buy the whole thing… I'm trying to talk myself out of it, because it's $20 a book, for ones I already own - but they are so, so gorgeous.)

It was awfully nice of Jordan Hawk to compile all the Widdershins short stories in one book so I could read them. I'd only read "Remnant" before, but these were very enjoyable. I enjoyed getting more of Griffin's perspective from the days of the early books, since we don't get his POV in the series proper until book #6. And "Undertow," the longest story, gave us the really charming courtship between Whyborne's secretary and his sea-creature sister (complete with unusual courting gifts).

This book of short stories and novellas from the Whyborne & Griffin universe is off to a terrific start!

1. " Changeling" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Told from Niles Whyborne's POV, it begins with the birth of Percival and his twin sister, then follows key events of Percival's youth. Niles does love his youngest child but doesn't understand him and can't relate to him. It gives a more nuanced view of Niles, and I loved it.

2. Rescued ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The story of Griffin's difficult first days in Widdershins. He rescues a scraggly stray cat, names him Saul, and nurses him back to health. It's a lovely symbiotic relationship.

3. Home ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Griffin's memories of Christmases past, from his time as a Kansas farmboy, to a Pinkerton in Chicago, and his best and final home with Wyborne in Widdershins.

4. Eidolon ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Griffin gets a mysterious case on Valentine's Day, which interferes with his lovely plans to spend the evening with Whyborne. The case is scary and spooky, and while the case is resolved, there is much that's left unanswered. I might have given it 5 stars, except for all the unknowns. I want answers!

But the story is most notable for its telling from Griffin's POV. It turns out the charming Griffin has his own insecurities regarding his budding relationship with Whyborne. He learns that when Valentine's Day is spent with his love, extravagance is not needed.

5. Carousel ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
What a wonderfully taut, tightly written story! Told from Griffin's POV, the themes of family and brotherhood are front and center. It's what we (and Griffin) needed after the debacle of Stormhaven.

Plus, it's hella creepy! And there are throwbacks to the equally creepy Eidolon and Stormhaven..

6. Remnant: A Caldwell & Feximal/Whyborne & Griffin Mystery
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Five shining stars!
Whyborne and Griffin meet Simon Feximal and Robert Caldwell in London. Robert and Griffin become great friends, much to the jealousy of Simon and Whyborne. Nonetheless, a mysterious case is solved, and an unknown person is saved.
Read all about it here.

7. Harmony 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
A most lovely story! Griffin sends Whyborne on a Christmas Eve treasure hunt, complete with Saul, Christine, love notes, and memories as far back as Widdershins. Plus a snowball fight, a muddy top hat, and a Christmas present for the ages.

8. Undertow ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Miss Maggie Parkhust has an adventure of her own. Then she gets her happy ending.
