Zima kasnih 1950-ih, Longyearbyen – rudarski grad u arhipelagu Svalbard u zaleđenu Barentsovom moru, zajednica tundre, snijega i leda, s rudnicima ugljena usred netaknute prirode. Mladi kirurg Finn i njegova supruga Eivor doseljavaju se s dvije kćeri u najsjevernije naselje u Europi. U mračnoj polarnoj tundri temperature padaju ispod minus 30 stupnjeva, a zimi nitko ne može napustiti otok. Kao liječnik tvrtke, Finn liječi rudare ozlijeđene tijekom opasnog rada, ali ubrzo shvaća da se ne raspadaju samo njihova tijela, već i njihova psiha. Novonastala situacija opterećuje i Eivor, koja teško nalazi svoje mjesto u otočkoj zajednici. Osjeća se izoliranom, s dvoje male djece i mužem koji stalno radi. Njezin tihi očaj na kraju svijeta polako, ali postojano, okreće je protiv vlastita muža. Život na Svalbardu roman je o preživljavanju u području vječnog leda, izolaciji, snazi prirode – i braku u krizi.

Heidi Sævareid (1984) har mastergrad i nordistikk fra UiO. Tidligere har hun vært norsklærer og forlagsredaktør, og arbeider i dag som oversetter, kritiker og yogalærer. Hun ble nominert til Brageprisen og fikk Kulturdepartementets debutantpris for ungdomsromanen Spranget (Omnipax) i 2013. Slipp Hold er hennes første roman på Mangschou forlag.

Skulla stoppa på side 50. Svalbard æ kult, men skildringa av det stakkarslige ekteskapet her kunna e godt vørre foruten.

This was really slow. At times excruciatingly slow. At one point there it seemed like there was actually no story; there was an “almost incident” out on the ice where I kind of hoped the children (or at least someone) would fall through and create some excitement.

I thoroughly dislike reading about children and families. I think you’re probably supposed to feel like this with this book though, as it features difficult, annoying children and a reluctant mother who’s probably regretting her life choices up until this point. However, it would have helped greatly if the main character was more likeable, or at least more interesting. She’s basically an empty shell that just trudges along. (Except where the dog is involved! I absolutely approve of this, if course.)

I do think this book creates a perfect atmosphere of isolation and numbness. It’s just… not great fun to read about, and that’s perhaps the point. The last third of the book redeemed the two first, and I can’t give it a bad rating, because I actually finished it in one sitting. I’d say 3.5 stars actually, partly because it feels so authentic. If you want to read about Svalbard in the 50’s then this is probably as good as it gets.

Zatvoren i pomalo tjeskoban roman o obitelji mladog liječnika Finna i njegove supruge Eivor koji, zajedno s dvije djevojčice, provode dvije zime na najsjevernijem naseljenom otoku na svijetu - Svalbardu. Finn je liječnik u rudarskom naselju Longyearbyen, zaposlen po cijele dane, dok je Eivor posvećena djeci i obitelji, ali teško se uklapa u izoliranu otočku sredinu i na život u dugotrajnom mraku i hladnoći. Godina je 1957., Hladni rat se osjeća najviše kroz psihotične aluzije nekih likova, do izoliranog otoka vijesti iz svijeta slabo dopiru, a odnos Finna i Eivor sve je napetiji. Sve ono najizrazitije na Svalbardu - izolacija, mrak i hladnoća kao da potenciraju probleme koji se i inače javljaju u brakovima, pogotovo prezaposlenih liječnika. Atmosfera je majstorski ocrtana, autorica je gradi postupno, ali sigurnom rukom. Zbog toga knjiga ne osvaja čitatelja od samog početka, pomalo je teško probijati se kroz početna poglavlja, a i treba popamtiti sva ta norveška imena. Ali kad vas knjiga jednom uvuče, opći dojam je izuzetan.

This is the first ever book I gave up on after 20 pages (and I’ve read some pretty bad books in my life).
I saw that it was set in one of my favourite places in the world, in mid-20 century, figuring it was a safe read. I have never been so wrong.
I can see that the reviews mention the problems with the narrative, but I would stress the utterly bad style of writing. It is as if a high school student wrote the book. And no one can justify this with “wanting to set the mood” or “creating a gloomy atmosphere”. There have been books which achieved the trapped-feeling atmosphere in a creative and interesting way, i.e. writing style, but this is just plain bad, 50 Shades of Grey level writing. Avoid and save your time and nerves.

Priča o infantilnoj majci koja ne zna jel bi prdla ili stisla. Ne znam je li to neofeministični roman, vjerojatno jest, uglavnom, žena ima dvoje djece s kojima ne zna šta bi, za razliku od cucka od kojeg se ne bi razdvajala. Da se nije bar nikad udala, tad bi mi bili pošteđeni ove gluposti od knjige o djetinjastoj ženi negdje iza božjih hozntregera.

I found the atmosphere of Longyearbyen very accurately painted even though I can only compare it to the state 50 years after the book’s story (ofc I don’t suggest you’d have to know the place to enjoy the book - but it definitely was added value) - the closeness of people, the beauty of the landscape, also the lurking terror of a nature that humans should not be in. I could also get some feeling from the book, how the darkness and isolation of polar overwintering can get to your soul (i.e., as with Eivor). Interesting, how many of 2022’s (already 2020’s) current events softly resonate in the book: national territorialism, climate change, even a bit of epidemic; but not in a forced way, in fact U might even overinterpret. — I particularly liked how the dog and kids figured prominently, of course, they did because they did for Eivor. Their portrayals are incredibly lifelike, yet warm and nevertheless amazingly clever as literary devices.
One thing I might criticize is that in or by the 3rd quarter the story was drawn out just a little bit too long and the ending just a little bit too abrupt – but both still within reason, it still works.
I’ve read the german translation, which is mostly very good. I only wondered about leaving some of the Norwegian expressions intact (gate, Fjell, maybe Teddy, for a polar bear?), but overall that adds to the atmosphere.

Long descriptions of everyday activities perfectly portray life in the North, on an isolated frozen island, in darkness and snow, through the eyes of a young woman who cannot admit to people arround her or to herself that she does not want to be there. She longs for the sun and the beauty of nature. She desires the freedom of choice. She does not want new friends, she does not want to talk.

Her husband devotes himself to a colleague who is slowly falling apart, and does not notice that his introverted wife is also on the edge. Or he does notice, but ignores - like with the first signs of his friend's mental illness.

But she doesn't show it, no way she will let him in, after he didn't even aks her should he accept the job at the north.

She has a dog who understands her and comforts her. Jossa just stays quiet and warm. And warmth is precious to Eivor.

Life on Svalbard is boring, and so is the perspective of this novel—it's boring, but there is something deep and so alive that surprises you while reading, that pulls you through the pages.

Don't read it if you only have a precious half-hour a day for reading. Read it when you have time. On vacation somewhere in the sun.

Heidi Sævareid skriver om livet på Svalbard på 50-tallet. Her berører hun tema som familieforventinger, kjønnsroller og psykisk helse.

«Longyearbyen» er et portrett av et lite lukket samfunn og et ekteskap som stilles på prøve underveis. Det var ikke helt enkelt for Eivor å reise fra Oslo til Svalbard for å være husmor der mens mannen Finn inn jobber som lege. Eivor følger ganske motvillig med ektemannen. Hun vet lite om hva som venter henne. Hun er ensom og sliter med å finne seg ordentlig til rette. Klimaet er tøft og Eivor finner trøst i hunden Jossa. Det blir fort tydelig at Eivor mistrives. Finn jobber mye, og når han har fri, er de alltid sammen med andre. Det er en rolig roman. Jeg liker den godt, men vil tro at for noen vil den oppleves som stillestående. Jeg blir irritert på Eivor innimellom, selv om jeg også forstår hennes frustrasjon. Blir også frustrert på de valg Finn tar underveis. Det er tausheten som råder her.

Ova me knjiga dosta namučila i nekoliko sam puta željela odustati, ali je znatiželja bila prevelika. Dojmljivi opisi života na norveškom arhipelagu Svalbard tijekom polarne noći uvlače se pod kožu poput zime i mraka koji opisuju, a ni period svjetla ne zvuči puno bolje. Ako ovu fikciju ipak možemo promatrati i kao skup činjenica o takvom životu, mogu reći da sam dosta naučila o tome kako se ljudi tamo odijevaju i organiziraju život u ekstremnim uvjetima. Bračna priča o liječniku Finnu i supruzi Eivor koji se tamo doseljavaju sa svoje dvije malene kćeri prilično je mučna, dojam vječnog iščekivanja supruga koji je zatrpan poslom, depresije obaveza koje proizlaze iz brige za dvije male nestašne curice teži je čak i od tih opisa hladnoće i mraka i djeluje mi vrlo suvremeno, iako se radnja odvija 1950-ih godina.

Ukratko, liječnik Finn odlazi sa ženom Eivor i dvoje male djece na Svalbard gdje ih čeka polarna zima i neprekidni mrak. Eivor to iznimno teško pada te se ona izolira od ljudi i zamjera svom mužu što je prihvatio posao na par sezona. Jedino što voli raditi je skijati s haskijem, a sve ostalo, čak i vlastita djeca, su joj teret.

Ovo je mogla biti baš zanimljiva knjiga o životu na mjestu odsječenom od civilizacije, bračnim problemima i depresiji. Nažalost, ova je knjiga jedva zagrebala po tim temama makar joj je to u opisu. Zapravo ništa ne opisuje konkretno, svi su opisi iznimno površni. Taman kad pomisliš da će ti dočarati Eivorinu tjeskobu ili rasplesti neki događaj, spisateljica to samo preskoči - kao da ne zna kako da opiše što želi reći i onda joj je lakše samo napisati "novi je dan". Jedino pozitivno kod ove knjige je što mi daje nadu da onda i ja mogu biti spisateljica...

Predivna i vrlo mračna knjiga o životu s ruba arktičkog kruga. Savršeno opisan život u ledenoj izolaciji, međuljudski odnosi secirani iz ugla glavne junakinje, koja je pri tom anksiozna i introvertirana. Brak koji je stoga na kušnji, ali i sve ostalo. Čitanje ove knjige bio je top užitak, plus što sam se kao introvert s mnogim stvarima s glavnom junakinjom poistovjetila. ❤️

Tjeskoban roman. Ocekivao sam mrvicu vise. Atmosferican, zanimljive premise, ali istovremeno nekako nedorecen i tezak za citanje (ne u smislu da ga je tesko razumjeti, nego mi je jako dugo trebalo da ga zavrsim).

Tyckte mkt om!!! Väldigt stämningsfullt skriven och väldigt lätt handling att falla in i tack vare språket, dock något långsam och sedan ett lite abrupt avslut vilket drog ner poängen ett snäpp. Spännande att läsa om ett liv som är så långt bort från allt annat.

En lavmælt og nydelig bok om livet på Svalbard på 50-tallet. Nydelige naturbeskrivelser, og nyanserte karakterer. Jeg ville lese den fort, samtidig som jeg ikke ville at den skulle ta slutt.

Leste dessverre ikke denne ferdig. Kom tol side 110, men orket ikke lese mer. Den ga meg ikke nok. Ikke noe spesielt dårlig bok, men bare for treig og uten handling, spesielt handling som jeg kan relatere til. Dessverre.
