If there’s one thing Verity will consistently do, it’s spontaneously make terrible decisions. Sometimes they work out well—so far, smuggling her rescue cat into the shadow realm has been a great success—but more often than not, she ends up with a bigger mess to clean up than she started with.

If there’s one thing Theon will consistently do, it’s plot his brother’s demise after losing his spot in the line of succession to King Allerick. It has yet to work out well for him, but there’s a first time for everything, right?

Especially now that Theon has got himself an ex-Hunter of his own to feed from, and he’s stronger than ever.

But Verity isn’t going to let Theon get away with his treasonous ways, not when he has so much to offer the shadow realm. For the first time, someone believes that Theon has the capacity to do good in the world.

If only he believed her.

4.5 ⭐️ My second favorite in the series!

Update (01/10/24): I just listened to the audiobook and I'm bumping this up from 4-stars to 4.5-stars! I honestly love Verity and Theon. They're both ridiculous in their own ways but so perfect for each other. Theon truly being delulu, thinking Verity was his captive and her brazen responses to him made me laughing so damn much. I’m obsessed with their grumpy x sunshine dynamic as well! I will be re-listening to this one as much as Luxuria.

Update (01/29/25): I had to listen to the audiobook again because I couldn’t stop thinking about them. 😂 So much fun from beginning to end.

She didn't feel like my captive. If anything, I felt like the one who was ensnared.

WHAT TO EXPECT:
✨ book 4 (standalone)
✨ monster romance
✨ shades x hunters
✨ she’s an ex-huntress bored of life in the shadow realm
✨ he’s the king's half-brother plotting to take back the throne
✨ grumpy x sunshine
✨ marriage of convenience
✨ captive x captor (sort of not but really lol)
✨ beauty and the beast vibes
✨ 3/5 spice
✨ size difference
✨ library sexy
✨ shadow tentacles, knotting, breeding, biting, somnophilia, bondage
✨ hilarious inner dialogue and banter
✨ low stakes
✨ HEA

My Thoughts:

This was such a fun, quick read! It definitely gives Beauty and the Beast vibes with a grumpy, 'scary' MMC and a quirky, sunshine FMC.

Verity was such a firecracker! I love her humor and how all of her replies to Theon would bewilder and placate him. He truly didn't know what to make of her. 😂 There's so many scenes between the two of them that has me laughing out loud! She's definitely an oddball, and I don't really relate to her much, but it was fun to read about a quirky FMC instead of a badass killer like the previous two books.

Theon was such an interesting (and adorable) MMC. He has a reputation that makes many shades and humans fearful, but really, he's just a nerdy, logical guy who wants to make the shadow realm better. It was fun watching him try to intimidate Verity, but she basically brushes off his threats, which would leave him scratching his head. lol He's definitely all bark and no bite, at least to Verity. She definitely is the only person who could get past his walls, and what she discovers is a beautiful, kind, honorable, cinnamon-roll male. 🫶

I also really like how Verity and Theon compliment each other as a couple. Verity is used to not expecting people to offer much kindness or generosity, so Theon makes it his mission to give her the world. Whereas Theon has been discarded by the entire kingdom and seen as nothing more than a problem, so Verity is quick to always see the best in him and give him words of affirmation. She never asks or wants him to change, instead she accepts him for who he is and rolls with it. They really are so good for each other.

The spice was good. However, I think because they jump right into it, the sexual tension didn't burn the way I prefer. I don't need a slow burn, but I wish there would have been more resistance or some sort of conflict to make them work for it. I also felt like these scenes were not very long in comparison to her previous books. Colette Rhodes writes really good smut, so I would be satisfied reading more pages of it in each book.

The different / non-Shade palace setting was a nice change. There's also a bit more world building and development to the overarching series plot.

If I were trying to be an evil mastermind but no one took me seriously, I’d be a bit prickly too.

MAIN CHARACTER NAMES AND AGES
Verity de Jager (32) | Theon, Duke of Lindow (?)

FEATURES
∘ fantasy romance (shade/shadow-esque mmc)
∘ “You’re my captive.” But she literally volunteered
∘ accidental mate bond
∘ grumpy / sunshine
∘ serious mmc that she doesn’t take seriously

REVIEW
This was super cute. I loved how Verity just giggled at Theon’s treason and how even when he was brooding, she just laughed and disarmed him. Theon was so utterly befuddled by and besotted with Verity.

Verity and Theon’s relationship progressed pretty quickly, but it was fitting. How a novel can be so lighthearted yet deal with treason and murder is beyond me. I don’t fully understand the point of reintroducing a character from the past into the novel because it didn’t really go anywhere. Maybe in the next book we’ll see the fallout explored.

This is definitely one of the tops of the series for me. I’m excited and awaiting the future books. I can’t wait to see the realm change and adapt to the new way of life that’s shaken things up since book 1.

This was so sweet and cute.

Theon is a grumpy grump but it's obvious right away that he's ripe for loving and being loved. He has been celibate for more than 20 years before meeting Verity.

I docked this a star because the relationship and character development just magically pops into place, but it really is cute.

While Theon has been celibate, Verity has been helping the realm by sleeping with every monster out there. She's got some insecurities but they aren't really addressed long term.

But they both are happy and loved at the end. And she feels valued and cared for. So.... that works for me!

where do i even begin????

i love this series so very much. its probably my favorite monster series because there is just something about the girls being SO willing to bone a monster that has me kicking my feet 😂 and Verity did NOT disappoint.

❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥PLEASE PREPARE FOR A RAMBLE BECAUSE I CANT CONTAIN MY LOVE FOR THEON 🫣 POSSIBLE SPOILERS, I HONESTLY DONT EVEN KNOW. ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

Verity was kicked out of the Hunters for having MANY secret tentacle dildos while being engaged to a mama’s boy 10 years ago and since going to the Shadow Realm, she has sampled a lot of different flavors of Shades 😏😏😏 she has a healthy sex life (though it isn’t mentioned when her last encounter was) and she isn’t ashamed. Verity is a little tired of the every day goings on at court and is thinking about branching out and exploring the realm when an old decrepit looking Shade crashes a party at court….

Theon is the disgraced older brother of the King and has been living in his secluded ancestral home since losing the challenge for heir to both Allarick and Damien. He is super pissed about the fact that the King has his own feeder and he demands his own because he hasn’t fed in like YEARS (because the power reserve is for the elderly and children and he doesn’t want to use it when he is perfectly capable of hunting himself but the King banned going to the Human Realm 🥺🥺🥺) and here comes Verity to volunteer as tribute 😏😏😏😏

I can’t say enough good things about Theon!!!!! he is considerate, misunderstood, loving, always calls Verity his captive when SHE volunteered to go with him 😂😂😂

THINGS I LOVED:
😍 Theon willing to try EVERY fantasy Verity has
😍 The shadow tentacles
😍 How jealous and possessive Theon is about his brother Damien always coming to visit to check on Verity
😍 He wasn’t super interested in sex growing up because he was secluded and hasn’t had a lover in 20 years until Verity because he’s obsessed with her 🥹🥹🥹🥹
😍 How he thinks that if he didn’t claim Verity for his own, she could have ended up with someone else and he would have had to kill them
😍 HOW HE ACTUALLY KILLED SOMEONE FOR LOOKING AT HER AS FOOD AND NOT THE WONDERFUL PERSON SHE IS
😍 Her sad childhood made him upset and if he could have gone back in time to make her have a happy one he would have because she deserves to be happy.
😍 He talks about how he wants to over throw the King but comes up with a plan to make sure the ex-hunters are safe and happy in the shadow realm with rules to protect them and punish any Shades who bring harm to them 🥹

i could go on and on 🫣🫣🫣 don’t get me wrong, Verity was also an amazing character! but Theon stole my heart.

the things i didn’t like though…are few, but they are there 😂

the word “slick” was used A LOT…..like a lot but it’s not an omegaverse so i was confused.

the third act conflict (NOT A BREAKUP) didn’t have a super satisfying ending. it seemed kind of rushed like what happened with the hunters???

i can’t wait for the next book 😭😭😭😭

4 stars. Another enjoyable addition to this series. I loveeeee this authors MF books, not so much into her RH content. I’m really looking forward to more books in this series!!

Safe
No virgins
Hero celibate for 20 years
Heroine likes sex and has had a lot of it after coming to the shadow realm. This may bother some readers, but it doesn’t bother me. I’m always into some role reversal, especially if it’s before the MCs meet. Plus, the heroine isn’t interested in anyone else after being with the hero.
No scenes with OM/OW
No OW drama
Minor OM drama
No cheating

I really liked this!! Theon is a grumpy recluse with terrible social skills, and it was just so darn endearing 🥹

Verity was obviously a weirdo for just volunteering herself to a mean stranger that seemed to be hated by everyone, but hey, it worked for her! And I’m glad he made all her fantasies come to life.

Their relationship was so cute and hearing him describe the way he loves her made me want to cry!

I really hope the brothers can work out their differences and just learn to be brothers! Theon deserves to have people who love and care about him in his life 🥰

I go into these books just expecting a fun, smutty book that’s not to be taken too seriously (which it delivered), but I wish there was more to the romance. It lacked the chemistry that the first two books had and felt more like a story just trying to get from point A to point B. There was not enough development to believe in their love story. Every moment of their relationship progressing felt unnatural and unexpected. There was actually enough material to probably make this a least a 400 paged book so it being under 250 felt too short. I still loved the humour in the book and the dynamic between the two main characters. These are always fun to read I just wish it didn’t feel so rushed.

This installment was a little different since Verity (h) is a law unto herself and Theon (H) was isolated from the court. I enjoyed them both and how they were so different in personality, yet how they accepted and valued each other when others had overlooked or downplayed them. Verity did sell herself short at times since she couldn't always see her own strengths, which was sad. Theon wasn't the softest of MMCs so didn't immediately reassure her, however he was reassuring in a unique way with how he acted, like with making their midday meal together a routine or reminding Verity that she was his mate and had power. I appreciated that this wasn't like the others in the series and sometimes a departure from the typical helps keep the series fresher.

The story does begin with what led to Verity being kicked out of the Hunters and then transitions to her sort of quietly floundering a bit for purpose in the Shadow Realm. Then Theon busts into court demanding an ex-Hunter of his own and she sees purpose in saving this Shade that's fading away from lack of power. Their relationship advances both quickly and slowly thanks to the consequences of Theon's isolation and his instincts combining. There was a lot of sly humor I felt in this book with how Verity would be silently laughing at Theon at times and he was puzzled, but also not offended. Their fall into love was as unique as they were.

Written in first person, dual POV. No ow/om drama and both were experienced (H had been celibate for 20 years and h had been doing her part with Shades at court to power the realm, she's very sex-positive).

Steam-wise, Verity gets her deepest desires since Theon just wants to give her whatever she wants (albeit sometimes in a grumpy way, though not in bed). Unique use of shadows follow, as well as some chasing. I classify this as a fast burn since Verity and Theon do start getting busy right away (I think it was 20-something %) considering she's his "captive" to give him power (I kept expecting Verity to use air quotes for captive the way I was mentally adding them since if anyone's a captive, it's Theon to Verity's personality).

Side character-wise, Verity's cat deserves his own shout-out cause yay for cute animal sidekicks! The ex-Hunters were supportive but baffled by Verity. Theon's servants were sweet, as was his mom, and his sister was just as outrageous as in Austin's book, but she also grows some. Allerick, Damen, and Theon had some emotional scenes regarding the lack of brotherly connection closer to the end that killed me. We saw a good amount of Damen in this book and I cannot wait for him to find his love. Some Hunters also get page time because of the third act and there was one interaction that was clearly a breadcrumb for the future and I wish I knew already who it was referencing!

The third act conflict comes from outside of their relationship and it had me shedding some tears. The suspense, the danger, and the heart strings that it all tugged on felt intense in some places. High points also happen though, Verity gets to set all the Shades straight on what they've missed by isolating Theon and I cheered. The ending is HEA and super adorable (with a final moment of grumpiness from Theon but in a cute way) with an epilogue of their wedding day. I can't believe that we're more than halfway through this series now!

Theon was such the grump and fancied himself to be more evil than he was. He was bitter and lonely but grabbed on with both hands, in his own weird way, to Verity’s company. Verity was impulsive and gregarious, with an attitude of “I can fix him” that worked out for her because this is a romance book. I liked that she was neurodivergent (though undiagnosed) and a social butterfly. I also liked that Theon figured out that she didn’t think she deserved good things.

Spice: 4/5

Triggers: emotional abuse (not by MMC), non consensual mate bite, parent death (past), foster care involving being cut off from culture (past), illness caused by self harming behaviors, isolation and social pariah-hood, incarceration, death penalty trial, fall from cliff, hospitalization, symptoms of depression, familial estrangement

I didn’t think I was gonna enjoy the fMC as much as I did. I’m not a huge fan of overly bubbly, enthusiastic loud fMC’s, but here it totally worked. Theon needed Verity as his counterpart because that man is a huge grump and they balanced out nicely. I loved them together! A true sunshine/grump dynamic.

The story focuses mostly on their relationship, with a couple cameos of people we all know and love (but not in an overbearing annoying way) and with a little bit of plot sprinkled in. This one is definitely a fast burn though. Usually I’m not into that, but because the feelings only came later, I really liked it. It made total sense in the story and with the characters too.

2.25 ⭐️ Definitely my least favourite in the series.

So, I didn't DNF this... but it was a close call. Neither of the main characters called or appalled to me at all, so really I don't know why I kept reading.

This story is a lot darker than all previous stories in this series. It's basically Stockholm Syndrome Reimagined, and the MMC has convinced himself that he's kidnapped her and is, basically, r*ping her repeatedly, but doesn't really care. From her POV, we can kind of see how he didn't really kidnap her, and how she basically has fantasies about how she wants to be a hole for him to use, and in return, she wants to be able to live comfortably in his house. I wish I was joking here.

I could go into further detail as to why this book is the worst in this whole series, starting with the demented, misogynistic, wannabe r*pist warlord MMC who hates literally everybody but himself and is actively committing treason against King Alaric (his younger brother) and Queen Ophelia. But, truly not even the happy, lovey ending can make up for the rushed, unemotional plot of this book. The whole third-act drama/ adventure was odd, to say the least, but I'm glad we could advance the overall plot of the series in some way.

Neither MC was particularly likeable, but especially the MMC was criminal. Literally.

🌶🌶.5 - It's very much open-door, with lots of fluids -as we know it's typical in this series- but I was so uncomfortable reading the s*x scenes when there are no feelings involved. They were both emotionally disconnected and distant when it came to s*x for most of the book.

First off we love a fmc who is sex positive! Anyways Verity was such a joy reading about and seeing her transformation and knowing how she didn't allow her past to derail her from getting what she deserved was refreshing to see. Also we gotta love a grump who is obsessed Theon was so sweet and seeing how much care and consideration he had Verity was soo cuteee. Definitely need to read more books in this series and I am here for Damien's book!

Verity and Theon( older brother of the king)

This was a fun and steamy read with knotting , yummy shade/tentacles smut but it was very insta everything.
Verity seems to have zero self respect and just goes with everything that’s offered not wanting more for herself and she’s also very impulsive with little care for herself 🤷🏻‍♀️
Theon came off as bitter and jealous of his brother , the only thing he was speaking of was him wanting to overthrow the king and take his place cos he ll be better at it🙄.

Anyway, still had a few laughs and the smut was good so there’s that🫶🏻

I liked this one!

It wasn’t my favorite of the series, but it was fun.

Theon is like a lite morally gray man. He’s mostly all talk, and never really does anything except mention treason without doing anything very villainous.

Verity is bright and go with the flow, and not scared of him and offers to be his partner sexually to recharge himself.

I liked that the heroine was the one who was sex positive and had many partners and the hero was the celibate one. I kinda wish she hadn’t had so many in the shade realm, because I just wonder about running into them. 😅 But it worked for them!

I thought their character development and development as a couple could’ve been a little better and more expanded. It happened pretty fast, and they were super cute together and deserved a little bit more, in my opinion. But I still liked it!

Got an arc of this amazing book. Read it in one day…twice. Yeah I said twice. I loved it that much! I giggled, kicked my feet, said "same girl" out loud a few times. Only wished I was an ex-Hunter about 47 times. Theon was adorable and awkward. Verity was sassy and so relateable.

Oh man, my inner toxic queen was totally fist pumping at that show of possessiveness.

Freaking same Verity. This book scratched an itch I have had in my monster romance loving brain so perfectly I feel a slump coming on.

The ground seemed to be crumbling beneath my feet. Things had been going so well, and I’d ruined it with one clumsy misstep. Even her scent was changing, souring into something less settled. “I did not intend to ruin your mood,” I told her solemnly. Verity’s smile softened into something affectionate. Too affectionate for someone like me.

Like sweet kinda smart really socially awkward Theon who has absolutely no clue what to do with the little human in his house. He is so confused by her and he loves it and doesnt know why! UGH this book. I can't. I loved it. They were so chaotic and funny together. He’s so tough and badass (sarcasm) 😂 and she’s just like “Yeah pookie. You're so scary I am your terrified little captive” *insert eye roll*

This is such a fun book in the series. I love a good grumpy/sunshine romance and while Theon is certainly grumpy, Verity is her own brand of sunshine. Verity isn’t quite an optimist, she’s more of a ‘roll with the punches’ realist. I love that she’s unapologetic about her personality and just dives into new experiences. The chemistry between these two was undeniable, and while it wasn’t instalove it was definitely a close-to-instant lust scenario. It was fun to see their relationship grow throughout the story. This whole series is really great and this book is no exception. I read this in one sitting, couldn’t put it down

2.5 Tentacles

🛑SOME SPOILERS🛑

The story itself was about Theon and Verity falling in love with one another and I'm okay with romance books with this kind of plot. Heck, some of them have become favorites of mine. However, the lack of chemistry and substantial plot, bored me out of my mind 😮‍💨 There was an attempt around 66% of the book but its transition wasn't smooth. It felt random and out of place.

I understand where the author was coming from because that's when things started to get interesting, but the execution of that transition alone was sloppy. Both MCs' were sabotaged as well because all the growth we've gotten so far was lost😐

Verity was funny for the most part, but she also had her moments where she acted a little too obnoxious. Some jokes here and there were good, but I think everything's got a limit and she would keep pushing past the line until it became annoying. She also felt a little too dismissive at times towards Theon.

Theon has been added to the list of idiots I love. He's just such a LITERAL character. He was giving Drax from the Guardians of the Galaxy vibes. He didn't know anything about romance and so whenever Verity tried to be romantic, he would interpret it as her wanting to get sexual gratification from him.

Look, the smut scenes in this book weren't my favorite. They read too Japanese hent*i. Characters felt detached from one another as if they were more focused on performing rather than passion or connection. The dialogue certainly didn't help either.

Also why did these two characters act like foreigners around their own cultures? I understand Theon didn't know about the legend from the first book about the hunters and the hunted because they had a book and no one could read it, just interpreted the images within it.

That wasn't an excuse for him acting out of character and taking Verity with him to the real world where he turns incorporeal and is UNABLE to protect her because he can't even touch her. Theon's whole thing was to protect Verity at any cost until whatever this was🙄

Also, Verity complaining about not receiving a kiss from Theon when she's well aware, by this point, kissing is not part of their culture due to their pointy-fangs❓️ They don't even know what kissing is. More out of character stuff just to extend the plot❓️

I thought this was going to be one of my favorite books in the series, I really did. I loved how Verity was portrayed in Superbia but in here, I don't know, man. I liked her a little towards the end, does that count? 😆

If for some reason you don't want to read the book but want to know about the subplot pertaining to all other books, Theon is a scientist and he found a way to create individual portals so more hunters can easily escape the Hunter's Council and get to the shadowrealm. He also wrote some rules for both humans and shades, including punishments to make things fair.

This is definitely one of my favorites from the series!! Safe, cute, full of funny banter, and just so sweet. Exactly the way I like it.🙂‍↕️ Verity is absolutely delusional in the funniest way, and the fact that she literally volunteered to be Theon’s captive had me laughing😭 I loved Theon and his devotion to Verity, and I really enjoyed their relationship. The world-building was great too, and it’s always nice seeing the other characters pop up again.😙

I loooooved this book!! My favorite so far from the saga!! You know how much I love a possessive and grumpy MMC and a sweet and outgoing FMC combo!! And this book did it beautifully!!

Both main characters were amazing and I couldn’t love them more. Verity was really secure on her sexually and i appreciate it when the FMC has more experience than the MMC. Theon wasn’t a virgin but he has been twenty years celibate because he didn’t find the sex appealing nor the females that were attracted to him -being the outcast and villain the company he got wasn’t pleasant-.

We really get a slow burn when it comes to their feelings and relationships but we get sexy scenes right away which was really refreshing!

Theon was deliciously possessive of her and protective right from the start (I say start meaning them having sex for the first time)

I must say that I would have loved to see a conversation with Theon of why Verity was shunned by the hunters and I would have loved to read about Verity telling Theon about her ex boyfriend and her relationship (he was a stupid mamás boy) with him

Safety
No ow/om drama

What to expect?
Grumpy x sunshine

Ultimately I thought this was a worse rip off of the first book. It was very, very similar.

I thought Theon was okay. Sad spoiled mean boi but deep down a softy.

I absolutely loathed Verity though. I thought she was gross. She was vain, dumb, materialistic, shallow, so fucking basic, constantlyyy horny in a gross way. Like I'm all for people wanting to get down but this was so excessive it was off putting. She could hear her slick dripping onto the floor?? 🤢 but she's human? sooo dumbbb. I honestly didn't think she had a single redeeming quality. I bet all the other girls are rejoicing in the fact she moved far away from them. I would be celebrating.

I'm giving this 3⭐ even tho part of me hated it and wants to give it a 2⭐. Probably mostly a me issue but still it wasn't great.

Trigger or content warning? Yes, included in the book under the authors note.

Details?
The FMC’s name is Verity. She is 32 years old.
The MMC’s name is Theon. I am unsure of his age.
MMC has not been with anyone sexually in 20 years. FMC has been sexually active since coming to the Shade Realm, but did not let anyone knot her because she’s been saving that for her future mate.
FMC’s ex (that is in the prologue) shows up in the story, but the FMC absolutely does not want him back.

My thoughts?
Dear god, how did Colette Rhodes do it again?? AMAZING! I love this book. I have 146 yellow highlights, which is my “made me happy or laugh”.
Theon. Is. Hilarious. I love Verity’s character from previous books, and her and Theon complimented each other perfectly.
Honestly, I understood why Theon was such a grumpy shit, and I love their meeting moment. Definitely a story that will be passed around different shade’s tables for years to come. I was laughing out loud at moments, especially when he was dead set that he had “kidnapped” Verity from the court even though she volunteered. The poor shade was skin and bones from not feeding, and he was definitely rusty in being social. It was wonderful to watch him soften to Verity.
Also, Theon is smart as hell. He added an extra layer to making the “Ex-Hunters” more comfortable in the shade realm, and he might be secluded but he is incredibly clever.
