Dirty Blood #6

Clash of Kingdoms

Rate this book
I had the chance to leave these lands and avoid the war--but I chose to stay.

I chose to stay because if I don't keep Harlow safe, she'll die. The demons are a foe too powerful, invulnerable to Huntley's fire-breathing dragons, a fiend so untouchable that HeartHolme and the other kingdoms stand no chance.

I tried so hard to fight it, restrained my emotions from the first time we were together, but the inevitable has come to pass. I've fallen hard for this woman-- a human . I've chosen to risk my immortality for her even though she wouldn't forsake her humanity for me. When this war is over, we'll go our separate ways...and never see each other again.

Huntley and I are forced to work together to save his kingdom, and his hatred for me is slowly replaced by something else...respect. I've always been close with my father, but now I realize it's only because our politics are aligned. What Huntley feels for his family is genuine...unconditional.

Now I fight for more than just Harlow. I fight for her family...like they're my own.

Hmmm… I am trying to figure out how I am going to start this review. I give this book, the final book in the series three stars because of Harlow. I could not connect with Harlow. Overall, the book delivered on spice, action, emotion, and suspense. Aurelias had layers he shed and that was very emotional to read. It hit every point on the emotional spectrum, but the heroine fell flat to me. Here is why….

*****SPOILERS*****

Harlow is supposed to be her father’s successor, the Queen of Delacroix upon his death. She did not exhibit the qualities of a queen at all throughout the book. If she was not crying for her father’s safety, she was angry at Aurelias, and if she was not angry at Aurelias, she was in bed with him. That’s it. She never welded her sword in battle, she never saved Aurelias in battle. She was not the feisty heroine we saw in Larisa or Clara. The only time she fought is when she trained with her father. Other than that, all she did was throw rocks. Literally.

I found the emotional connection between Huntley and Aurelias more profound than the emotional Aurelias and Harlow. The emotional connect between Aurelias and Harlow was not as believable for me to understand his justification for forsaking his immortality. Yes, she came from a good family. Yes, he felt unworthy after killing his father and Renee. But what about Harlow was so astonishing to make him give up his immortality? Also, prologue explaining the night Renee died would have given readers a better understanding and connection with Aurelias.

Another reason for the three stars is that I felt the book left some cliffhangers. What about Viper? Why hasn’t he found love, or we see him find some fulfillment in life beside being general? There was never a sisterly connection between Harlow, Larisa, and Clara. We could have experienced a girl’s night with them at the pub but nope. Did I miss the chapter where Fang and Beast meet? It was implied in the book like we were going to experience it, but it was not delivered. The epilogue was not really an epilogue to me. It was their wedding but gave us no sense of what’s to come for Harlow and Aurelias. Babies? Ruling the Kingdom together? Or just making love all day in the castle until the next war?

Overall, this book was a 3. The total series a 4.5 because Larisa and Kingsnake’s relationship built the pretense and kept the momentum alive. After reading this book, I still feel like I’m missing something but cannot put my finger on it…. Unsatisfaction maybe. Especially since it's supposed to be the last in the series.

I knew this one was going to hurt so bad. But also so good. A stunning conclusion to this series. Devastating in more ways than one. My heart hurts but is so overjoyed with the resolutions. Aurelias and Harlow have become my most favorite couple. I was so happy to get so much of Fang in this last book. I can’t believe it’s over. Wow. Penelope… your writing captured my soul. With a Fang death grip. It will forever have a piece of me. I mean I did name my dog after Fang after all 🤣🫶🏼 thank you for this beautiful series. This is my Harry Potter.

This was SUCH an action packed book, so much happens so quickly, you just can't put the book down! I have really been loving this series, it has been so fun. This one was really emotional at the end, she made me cry!

I especially loved seeing Aurelius and Huntleys relationship progress thru the book. Aurelius had so much respect for him, and Huntley showed him what a father should be like.

The ending felt a little abrupt to me, but that may just be that I didn't want the story to be over! 🤷‍♀️ I really hope we get to see more of this world in the future!

this series started off rocky, got better in the middle, but totally missed the mark in the end. ☹️

i wanted to love it, but i found myself not caring about a single character. the best part of the book was their pet snake, fang.💚 i would rather read a love story about fang and beast! iykyk

can’t recommend. her other series, the death king was so much better, and worth the read!

The start of the series was so solid but now at the end the only ones I enjoyed were cobra and Clara and they were barely the main perspective lmfao. Arelias is SO annoying. Huge disappointment in king hottie

"When I looked into those dark eyes, I couldn’t resist that intensity, the way he looked at me like I was the only woman in his heart. He could hurt me one moment…but make me so weak the next."

Woah... Honestly speechless after finishing this book. I am heartbroken that this series is finished😭 The ending was bittersweet but it mended my heart a bit. I cried through the last 25-30% of the book. The characters emotions were written so beautifully. It was devastating. I thoroughly connected with the characters and felt everything. I'm sure a lot of people can relate to some of the feelings the characters elicited.

This book was just as fast paced as the others in the series. I was never bored and always eager to see what happened next. I loved watching the relationship between Aurelias and Huntley grow and transform. It was really beautiful. The relationship between Aurelias and Harlow was also pretty special to watch.

I loved the appearance Aurelias' brothers made in this one. They were pretty important characters which was fun to read. Of course Fang was with Kingsnake so I got a good dose of him as well. Beast and the dragons are also favorites of mine. I love all the creatures🤭

This book was filled with war and bloodshed. It was action packed and written in a way that allowed me to picture everything in my mind. I have a lot of respect for Huntley and his love for his people. It was difficult to read about his soldiers perishing during the wars.

I can't say I was super surprised by the little bit at the end. Aurelias' father is trash. Straight up trash that only thinks of himself. The more he spoke the more I grew to hate him. Some kings rule with the best interest of their people in mind. Others rule with their own best interest in mind.

The smut was just as good as the previous books. There were a bunch of scenes but many were short and not super drawn out which I was fine with. The smut added to the story and was placed very well throughout the book. If you want an action packed series with dragons, vampires, and snakes this series is for you.

I felt every emotion possible while reading Clash of Kingdoms - fear, anger, empathy, love, heartbreak.

Aurelias kept his word and helped in the war with the Demons. Even starting to respect Huntley as a King.
Huntley grew more accepting of Aurelias and the relationship he has with Harlow.
Harlow, my heart broke for her when she realised that she was going to lose the love of her life.

An action packed finale to this series, that had me not wanting to put it down.

Penelope, whether she is writing as Sky or Barsetti knows how to pull at your emotions. Even writes in a way that makes you grow to like and root for the original bad guy of the story. You know they will eventually redeem themselves, but when, where and how long it will take always keeps you guessing.

Absolutely freaking phenomenal series.
I have loved this world Penelope Barsetti has written, and these characters - even the vampires.
I'm really hoping that this isn't the last we see of them!

Penelope Sky has done it again! This series was so good. I loved every book and wish there were more. I loved Aurelias and Harlow. Their love for each other was so touching. This series will draw you in and you won’t be able to stop until you have finished. If you want a good series to read this is definitely one to buy. Penelope Sky is one of the best authors and you won’t regret buying any of her books because all of them are fantastic!

Soooo much happened in this book. I could not for the life of me understand why Aurelias wouldn’t just tell Harlow how his previous fiancé passed. That made no sense to me as well as him being adamant on not turning her or becoming human. He wasted time with this internal conflict when he could’ve just been with her. The ending was eh.

In reading this series, I thought Viper would find someone as well but I assume he doesn’t get a love story.

Pretty decent series overall. Found myself way more of a fan of Kingsnake and Larisa’s storyline than Harlow and Aurelia’s. I did feel like their (the latter couple) storyline was stretched out between books and really could have been made into one written main novel, perhaps even a Novella for Aurelia, with more context and backstory in it.

I felt with Harlow’s character she was just, meh. Nothing really exciting about her, Plain Jane comparatively to what we saw from Larisa’s character as far as development. I had a hard time connecting with Harlow. Aurelia had a lot of potential, especially in these three books designated to him. Not sure if we met that potential with him. I feel like there is still a story there unsaid about him.

The many different POV’s outside of the MC’s, really wasn’t a fan of. I think it took away from time that could have been invested in these MC’s.

Overall, I’m glad I stuck out with the series. I was tempted to DNFing. Being a fan of the author made me push through. I’m hopeful of what the author has coming down in the pipeline as far as written work.

And they all lived happily ever after…

It only took killing the elf king, the werewolf king, the demon army, and the king of all vampires… that was fun a fun ride through the whole series!

I liked that this book didn’t have the girl giving up everything to become a vampire bride, but rather the vampire giving up everything to be her husband and give her a family she wants! So sweet!

full circle

I’ve read all the books in this series but I’ll only leave a review on this last book.
1: the series was written fairly well and the world building is pretty solid. As all fantasy books have their own rules this series did a good job following them.
2: the relationships in all the series are some what mirrors of each other. Aside from character tittles they all seemed to have similar if not the same relationship struggles.
3: all of the characters lack true character identity aside from Cobra. They all sound childish and are too stubborn. I would understand if only a couple of characters displayed this trait but for all? The author did a good job with figuring out Cobra’s tone of voice as the funny younger sibling. But the other character’s POV’s sounded too similar and lack individuality.

Edit: so I got a warning from Amazon (and I’m guessing it’s about this post) which was weird to begin with as to when I first wrote this review I’d already got an email that they won’t be posting it on Amazon. (I wrote the review on my kindle that’s linked to both Amazon and goodreads) So I ignored it as I don’t really care if they do or not I just needed to write a review for the goodreads link to my kindle to mark this book as read. And I gave my honest opinion. Fast forward, I get the first warning email which confused me cause they’d already said wouldn’t post it and I double checked and for sure it’s not on Amazon. Then I remember that Amazon now owns goodreads but still confused on how it applies. (You may post reviews, comments, photos, videos, and other content; send e-cards and other communications; and submit suggestions, ideas, comments, questions, or other information, so long as the content is not illegal, obscene, threatening, defamatory, invasive of privacy, infringing of intellectual property rights (including publicity rights), or otherwise injurious to third parties or objectionable,…)(word for word copy of their guidelines) Now my only guess for the emails is the ‘the good, the bad, the ugly’ movie reference I made. Or someone of importance made a complaint. Anyways I replaced them with numbers now.

Loved reading the exciting, mesmerizing, and spellbinding story by the phenomenal author, Penelope Barsetti. Even though Aureleis plans to leave after battling the beings, he will do anything and everything to keep Harlow safe, but he will not turn Harlow into a vampire nor become a human. Read the highly recommended, wonderfully written, and a must read riveting love story.

Lazy lazy writing. The multiple POVS from completely irrelevant characters was a choice and a terrible one at that!

Harlow being manipulated by her own family to “understand” Aurelias fuck ups and his toxic behavior like okay! Your family hates you!

Harlow’s character arc went downhill she became completely weak and incredibly dependent on others in a way that she never had before. She was way stronger before I am not sure what happened.

I am at a loss for words here, and the praise I’m about to dish out won’t do this story enough justice.

Anyway, closing this book after spending the last year enjoying these three interconnected series felt both incredibly rewarding and heartbreaking. Penelope does such a phenomenal job creating alluring characters, settings and plots. So, saying goodbye leaves my heart aching. I couldn’t put this book down, and I can say the same for the books in this story that preceded this one. What I wouldn’t give to go back and read all nine of these back to back for the first time. 😩

Aurelias and Harlow’s love story touched me just as much, if not more, than the love stories focused on in the preceding series. Each lover’s shifting emotions, turmoil, desires, rational, etc. were so well written, that it was natural to feel both frustration and empathy towards each of them throughout the course of the story. I absolutely loved the way their romantic storyline concluded. It made the most sense, and it wasn’t a surprise to me. But, it would have truly been unbelievable thinking back to the Aurelias the readers were first introduced to.

The entirety of this story focused on so many other satisfying elements, apart from romance: action, suspense, fantasy-world building, mythical creatures, comedy (♥️ you Cobra), forgiveness, family, self growth…the list goes on. So many compelling storyline elements, but never once did I feel overwhelmed, or as if there was too much to focus on. Penelope layers everything together so patiently and tastefully.

I could write my own novel just reviewing this one. So I’ll just end here. But, I will mention before I bow out, and this is where I’ll mention some minor spoilers -

- thank you for not killing off Huntley. I had a strong gut feeling throughout these last few books that Huntley, our original MMC, was going to meet his end in the most depressing blaze of glory. That didn’t happen, and I am eternally grateful for that.

- I would have loved to see a Fang and Beast meet up!

- Viper needs more love! A storyline following this character would be a perfect way to dive back into this world someday. I was kind of hoping that him and Lila would meet. But considering the final event of this book, I guess that relationship wouldn’t really work. I now know all of the other brothers so well. So Viper, you need an opportunity to shine. ✨

Overall, do yourself a favor and begin the Forsaken King series and keep going from there. It’s an incredible ride. 👏🏼

Perfect ending

What can I say that I haven’t said already in the past about Penelope… she’s simply the QUEEN of dark, paranormal, contemporary and anything romance. Her writing is exquisite and talent unique… keeps everyone engaged and on their toes from start to finish. So much happened in this book that even after finishing reading I had to sit there and think of everything that took place. Your emotions will go up and down.. tears will roll down your face and your heart will break into million pieces then put back together….

The war was INTENSE. Every time a fight with the demons took place I would automatically hold my breath…. When they went to destroy the crystal and they all got badly injured ugh it almost brought me to my knees. Glad the brothers got out alive and with the help of beast! She’s definitely fangs equal and I hope we can hear from them in the future. I was sad to hear how one of her hatchlings got whipped and abused because she helped them 😔 it broke my heart to read that from the evil a$$ Vine.

Aurelia’s not telling her about feeding of a human and having that kind of interaction bother me so much. I understand his reasons behind it because of everything that took place like 600 years ago but it doesn’t excuse he lied and betrayed her. Made me a bit sad Harlow didn’t get to experience that intense feeling with him because of his fear to hurt her and not telling her the truth annoyed me.
he shouldn’t have done any of it behind her back. Glad they were able to move past it.

Glad Huntley was able to see past his anger and accept and care for Aurelias.
Glad after they had so many losses they stood strong. Everyone played a key role and helped as best as their abilities.
Glad Aurelias killed his father. He was A+ asshole. Ugh I wanted to stab him myself after what he done with Huntley and the kingdom.

The ending was perfect, somehow bittersweet because of the love I have for Aurelia’s family but completely accept and respect how everything took place at the end with his choice of giving up immortality and become human.
I actually was hoping for it, we knew from the beginning how Aurelia’s hated humans and there was so many reasons behind it but once he was able to look past all that, forgive himself then he was able to choose happiness with Harlow. Thankfully he had his brothers for guidance!

Overall this series was beautiful writing and dear to my heart, glad everyone I care for made it out alive ♥️

Wow! Daayum this was a good book—a page turner indeed!! To say I love this story is an understatement! What an epic ending for Aurelias and Harlow’s story—what a ride! Reading this kick-ass story had me speechless, and no amount of guessing could have prepared me for what went down. You feel every ounce of pain, every slice of betrayal, lies, and it will keep you on the edge of your seat to find out what happens next. Penelope Barsetti in her usual manner blew my expeditions all to hell.

Although Harlow’s father (King Huntley) taught her how to fight and defend herself as a warrior, prepare for the enemy, and to lead their people, but she was not prepared to fight against a foe that was stronger than any others. Instead of leaving the kingdom when Aurelias had a chance, he stayed to help Harlow fight the unknown foes. Because of his past, Aurelias tried to restrain from having any emotions, but Harlow was different. “I never would have fallen in love again if Harlow weren’t the most exceptional woman I’d ever met. And now I knew exactly where she’d gotten the traits that had made me fall headfirst the moment I kissed her.”

What happens when you are not prepared for demon foes you don’t know how to fight them? When Aurelias finds out what Harlow has to do, he becomes progressively protective and will do whatever he needs to do to keep Harlow and her family safe. “Her family…they’re good people.” They’re different from the humans in our world. They aren’t weak and submissive. They are strong and brave. “They serve their people…rather than expect to be served. I’ve grown to respect them, especially her father.” Then an incident occurred that will put Harlow and her family’s life in danger. The threat is now more discernible than ever after the incident happened. I was thinking this story was going to go one way when BAM—out of nowhere it turns! I was flabbergasted with the unexpected revelations that happened, but it was jaw-dropping good! There are several twists and turns within the story that will tempt the characters in ways they could have never envisioned. What happens next? Well, read this amazing story and find out. Penelope Barsetti delivered a powerful and emotional, intense, and all-consuming story that left me obsessed. You won’t regret reading CLASH OF KINGDOMS.

This book frustrated me I definitely took longer to read it than it should have because I kept putting it down one point I got a little misty eyed maybe because of Ryllee and Harlows spoiler alert reunion in the end. I guess you could say. Really pissed me off Really bad in this book and victory over his father was definitely earned and I feel like took forever but he was a good catalyst and some of the shit she saw some coming. Some of it you didn’t, but then you were like that doesn’t surprise me he serpentine is a dick Definitely deserved what he got. I really didn’t think that Ryllee was going to make the decision that he did and I thought we were just gonna be mad at him forever then I was like OK he’ll go back to Harlow and we’ll get the ending that we want we didn’t, but we still had a happily ever after, try not to give y’all spoilers. Here wasn’t the ending that I wanted but I guess I’ll accept it. I wish the epilogue was a little bit longer. I was really hoping here for like a hey I’m gonna turn human for you will have kids and then as soon as we have, kids will turn back into vampires after our kids are old enough and then when they’re old enough will turn them into vampires and then we all live happily ever after with our bad dragons and no more demons but that didn’t happen I feel like this book probably was nothing but turmoil and are y’all gonna die you’re going off to war a couple days later the reunited, then they’re gonna go off to war scouting could die than the reunited. It was like the same story with a little bit of a different plot to us each time, but I still enjoyed reading It And I think this one may give me the feels more than some of the other ones as far as her descriptions and actually being emotional and it and I freaking love Huntley and Harlow‘s family and the fact that Huntley calls him son and just completely excepted him and that is a Ryhleys family and I will take that as a win so yay have you ever after. Also, don’t come at me. I’ve voice texted this because I’m in the bathtub and I’m too lazy to type it out. 🤣

A rollercoaster full of emotions.

Clash of Kingdoms is going to give you a hell of a ride full of love, sadness, stress, confusion and so much more that when you finish the book, you may be feel sad but also completed because it is the the end of an era that begun with The Forsaken King 🥹 (unless Penelope decides to surprise us on the future with more stories intertwined with this characters👀)

I’m going to start talking about Harlow and Aurelias 🥹🥹🥹 my babies, I honestly couldn’t imagine what decision they were going to take to be together because as we face during the book, none of them wanted to make the sacrifice or at the least they would do it but that would make they feel so miserable 😭😭 soooo to avoid spoilers I’’ only going to say that I voted for that option, I just feel that choosing that decision it would be the best for them, but obviously as the things were between them I couldn’t imagine and when it was taken I WAS SO SAD like 😭😭😭 you’re going to understand 😭😭 but at the same time I’m happy they’re going to live happily ever after💖 last book ended with Aurelias and Harlow admitting to their self that they love each other and it was a blast reading about it and how they show their love ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 And just one thing that I can’t believe Harlow forgive Aurelias for THAT thing he did several times without Harlow to know, I was honestly so shocked and If I were Harlow I would’ve wait to my man to come and ask forgiveness on his knees LOL.

Now about Huntley and Ivory, my other babies 🥹🥹🥹 it was amazing seeing them with their phase as parents and how they would make everything to protect their family and their kingdom, truly a king and queen ❤️❤️ everytime they were going to have a battle I was in tears reading about their goodbyes 🥺 I love them so much and it was everything knowing about them after The Forsaken King.

I enjoyed so much this last book and also that keep me reading/knowing about Larissa, Kingsnake, Fang, Cobra, Clara (but NOT about Aurelias Father, I hated that man and also the demons😡😡😡) and I reeeeeally hope we get in the future more crossovers like this one, I just love when several books of an author does that lol ❤️❤️❤️

Thank you Penelope for creating worlds that keeps you absolutely hypnotized and love stories that feed my heart and soul ✨

Wow! So I must say going into this whole series as my first fantasy with vampires and other beings, I was very skeptical. I never thought I’d like a fantasy but now…wow. This series has changed me! Then again Penelope is my all time favorite author ever and she writes everything so amazing, so I shouldn’t have even had a 2nd thought. Anyway…I thought Kingsnake and Larissa were my favorite. And Aurelias ticked me off when I first met him but now…his character became a favorite for me. I love all of them but This story had soo much emotion and action that my heart was constantly pounding waiting for what came next. Seeing this new side of Aurelias has pulled all the heart strings. True love at its finest. With the battles and who would and wouldn’t survive, to the emotional turmoil, to the decisions…omg. Oh and I wanted them all to just become vampires lol. The whole family! Harlow AND her whole family. Lol But Penelope made the story so much deeper. And I hated it to end so abrupt because I just wanted more. And it’s so funny what Huntley said to Aurelias in the chapel because my exact thought was….so live human together for a while and then have her taste your side and bring the family along for the ride lol. But nope…that explanation cut that thought right out of my head lol. Oh and I don’t want to forget before ending this review that Beast is awesome just like Fang. Totally woulda been okay with more of Beast. Beast needs to meet Fang. Two amazing creatures. And I don’t like snakes but these two..they got my heart with the rest of them. So sad their journey has ended but it was all so bittersweet. I’ll never stop wanting more! Happy, Sad, Anxious, Angry…the emotions in this book were not only the character’s emotions but mine as well! Thank you Penelope for your amazing skills and imagination! Both you AND your characters are freaking awesome!!!!!

This is the 6th book in the Dirty Blood series and I was a little hesitant to listen/read this because I had only read the first 3 books in the series. When I was awarded the ARC - I wasn't sure if I would have missed too much in not reading books 4 and 5 - plus the fact that I REALLY have a thing about reading books out of order. Thankfully, I can honestly say that I didn't have any issues at all with it. I think I had enough of the world building done in the first three books and the only thing that was different was that the last book was that it was dealing with Aurelias and Harlow.

I went back and re-read my review for the last book that I read (Book 3) trying to remember what the storyline was about. In my review, I had been a bit disappointed, and I think that's why I stopped after that book. I had been really invested in the first 2 books, but the last book had a couple of different storylines and I was pretty frustrated by both of the FMC's - Larissa and Clara.

This book however, grabbed me right away and I was completely invested as Aurelias helped Huntley to save HeartHome. There is some REALLY important happenings with King Serpentine that have been building since the beginning. I think out of all of the characters in this series, Aurelias is the one who we see have the most character growth - and it is fun to watch.

I listened to this on audio and enjoyed the narration duo of Ramona Master and Michael Ferraiuolo. They have been the duo for all 6 books so it helps to add to the consistency.

Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the opportunity to listen to and review this audio ARC. The opinions above are mine and mine alone.

This book will be coming out on August 20, 2024.
