“Survive” is a gripping tale of terror, heroism, and the indomitable human spirit, a must-read for fans of adventure survival books, horror thrillers, and fiction books about survival.
When Keith and his crew are dispatched to a national wildfire near the Canadian border in Washington state, they see it as nothing but another day at a dangerous job. Eager to meet their deadline, they take a treacherous shortcut through an old logging road deep into the dense forests of Spokane.
Tragedy strikes when their engine collides with an unknown obstacle, sending it tumbling into a ravine. With two of their crew members seriously injured and no means of communication, they are left to fend for themselves in the unforgiving wilderness, more than forty miles from civilization.
As the days stretch on, they come to realize that their isolation is not the only threat they face. Something sinister is lurking in the woods, hunting them down one by one.
Now the real question Can Keith and his crew 'Survive' against all odds? Or will they lose themselves in the wilderness entirely?

Interesting creature in the forest tale. Keith Wright, an experienced firefighter, is part of a deployment team of four on their way to a wildfire somewhere off the coast of Washington when bad luck strikes: a giant log derails their fire truck en route. The next five days are a pure adrenaline rush: who will make it and what happens next. As I mentioned, interesting story. That's what I love about a great horror story.
What I didn't like about this particular horror story:
1) I felt as if the author overexplained things, such as describing everything down to the very email they used for deploying resources
2) firefighters are awesome; that said: nobody is that calm and helpful in every single situation. There was ZERO conflict between the four men other than a few raised voices. Then everyone immediately apologized afterwards. Really? Just good old fashioned camaraderie. Even the "a-hole" Zane was helpful. I get firefighters are brothers, but people are people.
3) No conclusion as to what it exactly was. I guess the author wanted to us to visualize an awful, big, furry animal capable of stalking you over the course of five days, but it left me a little short of closure. Not a bad thing, but still worth noting.
Conclusion: All and all, decent read. I could tell this was a story by a new author (typos, lack of conflict, overdevelopment of one scene/character over the other), but I'm a sucker for survival horror and would still recommend at a solid 3.75 stars.
I have to give a written review of this fantastic book. The characters were brought to life quickly, and I was drawn into the book from page 1. I also loved the way the story unfolded into a scary encounter with something out in the woods. Each chapter got better and better, with the ending being perfect. If you love creature feature stories surrounding by a fight for survival, this is a must-read.
Immediately got to know Keith's character. Wasn't sure where this story was going but was so captivated by each screen I couldn't put down until finished. Totally invested in each of the characters.
The story wasn't bad, definitely nothing amazing but what really ruined it for me was the lack of contractions in the dialogue. It was like robots talking to each other.
I bought this book on a hunch and was very pleasantly surprised. I was hooked from the beginning and read it over several hours. Mr. Durkee certainly knows how to tell a story. Worth buying and reading
