Lina doesn’t believe in ghosts, but they won’t leave her alone.

When her father is killed, Lina and her little brother Mateo are forced to move in with her domineering uncle at Blackwater Manor. Lina soon discovers that her uncle intends for her to marry his nephew, Bray, to gain control of her inheritance. She is also convinced her uncle had something to do with her father’s death.

As the days pass, it becomes increasingly clear that Blackwater is haunted, and the malevolent presence seems determined to harm the siblings. To protect her brother, Lina attempts to communicate with the ghosts, all the while evading the handsome but devious Bray and crossing paths with the mysterious Max, a dashing army lieutenant with secrets of his own.

But as Lina unearths the atrocities of the past, she must now unmask her father’s killer and discover the ghosts’ intentions before she becomes one of them.

As with the previous book, we’re treated to the author’s sweeping Gothic style and careful revelation of the story. It built elegantly on each new discovery Lina uncovered until it became a snowball crashing inexorably down the mountain, and the inhabitants of Blackwater were powerless to stop what was coming. I thought I had learned my lesson with this author, but I still managed to overlook so many important details that pointed to the truth about what was really going on at Blackwater and where the true dangers to Lina and Matteo were coming from. I successfully identified some of what had happened, but I believe that was more good luck than actual skill. I loved the ending and now I’m a little sad to have to let go of these characters. I suspect they’re going to get into all kinds of grand new adventures now.

This one was a slow start for me. The first 40% of the book was harder for me to get into. But, the tail end of the book was action packed. I'm not sure I'd call this a horror novel, more a mystery with some spooky aspects. I found the prose strong and the story interesting.

I was able to guess a bit of the ending, but it was still well done. The atmosphere felt particularly vibrant.

I had previously read The Ghosts of Lewis Manor, so when I saw this novel by this author I knew I had to read it.

The Haunting of Blackwater had it all, it was written fantastically, the mystery and intrigue that continue throughout the story had me hooked and I found it difficult to put down. I needed to know what was going to happen next.
I loved the characters Lina and Mateo, they were the perfect siblings. Lina was strong and determine and I really felt a connection to her and as events unravelled I felt myself holding my breath. I really rooted for her.
This story is written so well and the world is created enough to make you feel like you're there with the characters. The twists and turns were surprising and that outcome at the end I was not expecting this novel to turn the way it did.
I absolutely loved it and I look forward to reading more by Marcia Armandi

An interesting mix of characters that find themselves in the midst of solving an old case, spy accusations and murderous plots. Life changes drastically when Lina and Mateo’s remaining parent is murdered. They are forced to return to the family estate and things begin to deteriorate quickly. Lina discovers ghosts which she wants to help crossover but she has to figure out why the spirits are stuck on this plane. Continued changes make Lina only miss her parents more. After a harrowing attack, Lina soon discovers how much had changed while she and her brother were gone from the estate.
I loved this gothic mystery. There were so many situations going on that it was like watching a film rolling across a screen. I could hear the sounds of the manor as Lina searched for clues. The description of the attack on Lina made me want to rush to her aid. There was a hint of romance but their plot was not the focus of the story. The ending wrapped up all the questions nicely. 5⭐️.

5 ⭐️!
A perfect spooky, who-done-it read for Halloween.
This is one of those books that I couldn’t wait to get back to when I had to do life things. 😂 I would even read 2 or 3 pages if I only had a minute or so. It was that good. Marcia’s writing style is 5 stars alone for me. The story was solid from beginning to end. I loved all of the characters and how everyone tied in to the ending. Speaking of the ending, I was completely shocked. I did not see that coming! Also, I am not usually a fan of historical fiction - I find it intimidating - but, The Haunting of Blackwater may change that for me. I need more of Lina and Max. 😭

Thank you to Marcia Armandi, NetGalley, and City Owl Press for this free ARC. This review is my honest opinion.

I requested this book on NetGalley last year and then hit a reading slump and never got round to downloading it. Then around a week ago I spotted it in my local bookshop and remembered that I'd wanted to read it, so I picked it up. Here's the blurb:

I love a good haunted house story, and combining that with a murder mystery sounded like it was going to be right up my street. Unfortunately that wasn't the case, and I ended up deciding not to finish reading the book at around 25%.

It's always immediately obvious when a book set in England is written by somebody who isn't from the UK, in a way that's hard to pin down precisely. I'm sure it's exactly the same when English writers set their work in other countries, too, but being English I found it hard to ignore the anachronisms here. They were mostly small things like the language people use, but also larger inaccuracies that speak to the research into the setting being a little lacking. The most jarring, for me, was the moment that Lina speaks about the library she worked at in London, which is named as Chetham's. Chetham's Library is the oldest surviving public library in Britain and is, famously, in Manchester (which happens to be where I'm from, so of course this jumped out at me immediately).

This is ostensibly an adult novel but to me it reads more like YA, and had it been marketed in that way I likely wouldn't have picked it up. I think there's likely an interesting plot hiding in here somewhere, but it's buried beneath a tangled layer of multiple other plots that feel a little too much, especially at the start. There is of course every chance that they all come together into a cohesive whole by the end of the novel, but initially it all felt a little messy and unfocused and nothing was compelling enough to override my irritation at the anachronistic setting and strange word choices in much of the writing.

Ultimately this just wasn't for me. No star rating, since it doesn't seem right to rate a book that I didn't actually finish.

I don't normally read horror/thrillers and I'm honestly not sure how I feel about this book. I've read the other 3 books this author has written and one of them was this same genre and I liked it better. This one seemed creepier, sadder, and darker than her novel "The Ghost of Lewis Manor". The pacing of this novel was interesting. The first half was kind of slow for me but kind of intriguing so I kept on reading. I felt like there were times in the book that there wasn't a whole lot going on for several chapters and then all the sudden there were plot twists that helped the plot move along faster. The book was quite dark, but I was glad for the little bit of romance and the few scenes when they went to town that were more light and happy. She kept me guessing through most of it, but as I kept reading I was pretty sure I knew who the killer was and by the end I was right. I didn't figure out all the details, but I did figure out some. I was proud of that because I'm not usually very good at figuring out 'whodunit'. I didn't love that Mr. Bray basically tries to rape Lina a couple times. I didn't feel that that was necessary. I know he needed to be a creepy, no good guy but I don't feel like it needed to go as far as it did. It wasn't super graphic, but I think had I known that that was going to be in there I might not have read the book. I don't think this is a book I will read again, but overall it was pretty good. It was interesting, intriguing, dark, a little creepy, and had some surprising plot twists.
The writing was good and I find it impressive that the author has written 4 books in a language that is not her native language. Her writing in her first book was good, but I have definitely seen improvement in her other books following (including this one). She does descriptions and setting the scene and telling what is happening really well. I hope to read other books by this author in the future, but don't know if I can do another thriller/horror story.

When Lina and her younger brother Matteo lose their father to a tragic shooting, they are sent to Blackwater Manor to live with their Uncle Bartholomew and Aunt Eleanor. Forgoing the start of her year at Oxford, Lina moves to Blackwater to protect Matteo because she fears Bartholomew played a role in her father's death. Lina soon learns that Bartholomew plans to marry Lina off to Elaenor's nephew, Bray, who is handsome but philandering. Meanwhile, Matteo seems preoccupied with a mysterious Blackwater inhabitant, and Lina is woken up everynight by strange sounds and a ghostly woman. In addition, Max, a soldier staying in town keeps crossing paths with Lina. Lina becomes determined to solve the mystery surrounding the manor and her father's death.

The Haunting of Blackwater Manor is an immersive, gothic story filled with mystery and suspense. This was a complex, carefully layered mystery involving danger from both the paranormal and human sources. The writing pulled me in with its rich atmosphere and compelling characters. Blackwater is an amazing setting, it is set back in the countryside with a gloomy and foreboding appearance, perfect for an unpleasant uncle. Each character is well-developed and unique. From Catalina's determination and protective nature to Matteo's innocence and joy, every person was distinctive and added layers to the layers of mystery around Blackwater. I was especially interested in Max and Mrs. I was glad when the larger roles for Lester's characters were revealed. An unexpected ending tied together the paranormal and real life mysteries at Blackwater for a surprising and satisfying conclusion.

This book was received for free in return for an honest review.

Lina's life takes a chilling turn when her father is brutally murdered, forcing her and her brother, Mateo, to seek refuge with their uncle at the enigmatic Blackwater Manor. However, instead of offering solace, Lina's uncle has dubious intentions – he's determined to marry her off to secure control over the family's finances. As Lina grapples with the sinister shadows surrounding her father's death, she begins to suspect her uncle's involvement. Meanwhile, the realization that Blackwater Manor is haunted dawns on her, shaking the very foundation of her beliefs. Caught between her responsibilities towards her brother, the mystery of her father's murder, her domineering uncle, the charismatic Bray, the enigmatic army lieutenant Max, and the restless spirits in her new abode, Lina finds herself in a maelstrom of challenges.

“The Haunting of Blackwater” by Marcia Armandi is a good spooky haunted house story for Halloween season. I loved how clever Lina is and how she thinks about the appropriate words to use so she has a little control of her situation. The book is pretty slow and doesn’t have a lot of action during most of it. The ending was a big surprise, and I didn’t see it coming. I wish there was a little more romance and tension. 4 out of 5 stars.

A good suspense and ghost story. When Lina's father is murdered, she and her brother, Mateo, have to go to Blackwater to live with their uncle until she turns 21. It is going to be a long year. He is a hard man and Lina is sure that he is the one that killed her father. She is going to prove it. Her uncle has decided that Lina needs to marry his wife's nephew, or else. With everything going on, when her uncle gives her an ultimatum, she chooses to have Mateo sent away to school. It seems safer that way. Every night, Lina is visited by a small boy. The boy has been dead for years. There is also a woman who comes to visit too. Lina has seen her many times. Lina isn't sure who she can trust. The men seem to be trying to control her money through her. Max is a man that she met on the train and seems to keep running into him quite often. He is there when she needs him, but what does she know about him? When Lina is attacked, Max is there to save her. What is going on? Who can she trust?

This was a great story. It was very well-written and suspenseful. It had a great spooky setting and atmosphere as well as all the things I love about gothic mysteries and writing.

Lina and her little brother end up going to their uncle's house because their father dies in a suspicious manner. So, there's a murder mystery and ghosts and you don't know who's who or what's going on. There's of course, the military man, who Lina seems to like that helps her too.

I thought I knew what was going on and who the bad guy would be in the end. I thought I had it figured out who the murderer was and what was going on with the ghosts and everything, but the ending surprised me a little. After reading it, I realized how it made sense and I could have seen who the bad guy was and what happened, but for once, I didn't know right away who the bad guy was like I usually do.

Thanks to LibraryThing and City Owl Press for letting me read and review this great book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers giving me the chance to read this book. I'm just sorry it took me so long to actually get to reading it. I really enjoyed the book. Part ghost story, part mystery, part love story, and part domestic thriller that was a very cozy, palate cleanser for me. Once I got into the story (a few chapters), I sat down and read the rest of the book in one sitting.

Lina and Mateo become orphans after their father was shot. They are sent to live with their uncle and aunt at Blackwater. A lot happens during their stay - ghosts, potential arranged marriage, espionage, etc. While it did seem like the book had maybe too many storylines rolled into it, it was a fun book to read. Each storyline did get wrapped up, albeit in a fast old time movie or Scooby Doo kind of a way - pointing fingers around the room. I did enjoy it.

The Haunting of Blackwater is a historical story in which mysteries of past and present collide in this well penned novel. The storyline is good, the characters are believable, and the presence of ghosts makes this quite a page-turner. The threats to the characters are not just supernatural, and the author does a great job of weaving a variety of threads and red herrings throughout the story to create a marvelously fashioned literary tapestry. I will definitely look out for more from this author. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Thank you Netgalley and City Owl Press for the chance to read The haunting of Blackwater by Marcia Armandi. This was a new author for me and I wish I had read it around Halloween because I probably would have been more into the spooky vibe. I did find that it started off slow, and I had to push myself to continue reading, but midway through it caught my attention and had a solid ending. I wouldn't describe it as horror, but a spooky gothic mystery.

This was a great read! I loved the story development and was completely surprised by the ending. I definitely relate to Lina. Being an older sister myself, I understand how she wanted to protect her younger brother after they became orphans.

I look forward to reading more by this author! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Haunting of Blackwater: newly orphaned Lina and her younger brother Matteo are forced to leave London and live with their only living relative, their brutish uncle at the family’s country estate. Lina comes of age in a year and hopes to just tough it out until then. But soon she is up against more than her drunk, possibly murderous, uncle. There are ghosts at Blackwater and Lina is determined to defeat them.

Man, I love a gothic horror. THoB was so well done, mixing dread with hopefulness, ghosts with plausible reasons, and overall creating an immersive atmosphere. As I was reading I thought, “Wow, this is like if The Turn of the Screw wasn’t terrible!”

Blackwater was suitably oppressive and I was glad there were some excursions to the village and to London to give the reader time to breathe. My favorite part of the book is that it was not JUST about ghosts. There were real world threats to contend with, mixed with family drama. Mysterious military man Max kept showing up, offering an outside perspective and another person for Lina to talk to. This leaves the reader with the impression that Lina is a sane, competent young woman, which made the threat of ghosts all the more credible, which made the book even scarier.

THoB was a spooky, atmospheric read that I can absolutely see myself returning to.

I was granted an Advanced Reader Copy of this book by NetGalley, and here are my thoughts upon finishing.

The pacing of this book is incredibly strange; it went from nothing really happenign for about 10 - 15 chapters to all of a sudden we have a plot no one expected and, within the last 25 pages or so, the entire story is told to us. Additionally, I thought the emphasis on motherhood in the context of the main character was strange and reductive.

That being said, the twists were unexpected and I enjoyed the romance aspects of the novel as well. I'm a sucker for a good ghost story and this book tickled that itch. A bit further after the novel comes out I might come back and do a full review, but as of now I will leave it as it is. As for whether or not I would recommend it, I would say yes but with certain reservations. Overall, lacking in some parts but profound in others.
