4.5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨
Where to begin, when you’ve read a book so EPIC, that you’re left stunned and speechless? So MUCH happened in this book, and it’s only book 1. It’s not even a lengthy book, this is about 400 pages (kindle) - and that’s not long for a fantasy book.
A very quick summary: Viola (FMC) has to participate in the yearly Race that is forced upon her people (mortals), to appease the gods. The winners of the Race are then sent to Ytopie, which seems like a sort of Utopia- a place to live out their lives with less hardship. Each year, there are 11 winners; 1 ultimate winner who gets to live a life in luxury, doted upon by the 10 other winners, who become the working-class citizens of Ytopie. The winners are not allowed to go back home after winning, and losers cannot visit either. The race is reminiscent of the Hunger Games, except the idea isn’t to kill everyone- you simply need to survive to get to the finish line. There are obstacles along the way, which are controlled by the Fae running the race.
Viola runs the Race with her best friend, Max, and a friend they pick up along the way. The Fae who run the race have “Seasonale” magic. Some Fae have Autumn magic, which can grow crops or can influence others; others have Summer magic, which can bring forth fire and cast spells of protection around themselves and others; Spring magic can temporarily raise the dead; and Winter magic, being extremely rare, controls shadows and can curse people. Of course, this is not an exhaustive list of their abilities, just a few examples.
Viola is a human and thus has no magic powers to survive the Race. She’s been training for the race daily, ever since she was a child. Her parents abandoned her during a Race, and supposedly, made it to Ytopie. She seems tired of living a difficult life on her own for the past 10 years, so she is determined to win the race and join her friends and family in Ytopie. In true fantasy fashion, it’s not just win the race and happily ever after. Of course, there’s a twist, or two or three…
Warning, there may be a few spoilers ahead. I’ll try to be vague!
I loved all of the tiny details that make up this book. It’s the subtle nuances of certain characters that end up building to a larger picture, or worse villain. We don’t see a TON of character development from Viola, although we do see her come into her true self. She’s not a dainty, quiet, woman. She’s feisty and takes what she wants. I love that about her, and she doesn’t make any bad decisions.
Mace (MMC), is of course a cinnamon roll, golden retriever, lovable dude… and handsome to boot- though I did dislike him in the beginning.
“The brightest star in the sky would brass in your presence.”
Zeph (MMC), we love and hate all at the same time. I loved his character ARC and might need to reread to go back and witness his descent into madness. I truly did not see it coming.
I loved that we have an adorable sidekick in this book- I love it when authors do this. Our little Shadow Snake is protective and a little bit of fun and whimsy.
Oh I almost forgot the best part! The magic system in this book is so different. It’s so incredibly well thought out and planned. You can tell that she has thought of every different facet of magic imaginable. I do not know how people dream up these ideas. Incredible!
There were many shocking moments in this book where I audibly gasped. I didn’t see those twists and turns coming.
The spice was nice. I’d say it’s probably a 2.5/5. Nicely written, no weird names for body parts, which I appreciate. Only one steamy scene in this book, which does add to the plot line.
The cliffhanger is pretty epic. It isn’t anything super surprising, but the story is assuredly just getting started when the book ends.
I love the multiple POV in this story. It’s totally necessary to see the different viewpoints so you can understand each character. You also get to know each character a little bit more intimately than you do in a single POV story.
There is some LGBTQ+ representation in this book and I really love it when stories include this. It’s not a large part of the story (thus far), just a small part, however, it’s noted.
My reason for not a 5-star rating: a little bit of info dumping in the beginning. I know this is totally necessary for the plot and to understand the Race, the magic, the fae, the gods, the lands, the lies, etc. The different magic and the Race were a little bit difficult to understand at first. Luckily, the author reiterates this a few times in this book, so it’s okay if you don't understand it at first because it will make sense when you continue further into the story. I also felt like I needed a bit more tension between our FMC and MMC. There was SOME, though it wasn’t a lot. This story didn’t exactly allow for it, though perhaps book 2 will do this!
If you’ve made it this far, thank you for reading my review. I received this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion, all thoughts are my own.
