On 1st October 2017 the Catalans went to the poles to vote on independence from Spain.
The Spanish government didn’t like that very much and tried everything they could to stop it. Among other things, they sent thousands of police officers who attacked voters and broke down doors in an attempt to take the ballot boxes and close the polling stations.
The Catalans didn’t like that very much and tried everything they could to go ahead, like peacefully resisting and hiding ballot boxes.
2 million people ended up being able to vote and the result was overwhelmingly in favour of independence.
Which the Spanish government didn’t like.
In the weeks and months that followed there were strikes and demonstrations on a daily basis in Catalunya and for a long time it seemed that all that was needed to set off an actual revolution was for a leader to emerge.
Peter Brown was a loser and couldn’t lead a conga line, let alone a revolution. However, after he gets caught up in a riot in Barcelona, shortly after the referendum, that’s exactly what the whole world seems to think he’s doing.

From a very young age, Simon Brading was in no doubt that he wanted to be a writer. Life got in the way a bit, though, and it was thirty years before he sat down and put pen to paper.
Less than a decade later he has more than twenty books published in various genres of fiction (sci-fi, steampunk, time travel, ballet...) and has no intention of being slowed down by anything except his son's demands on his time.

What a hilarious ride! The story has us meeting Peter, a mild bank manager, and puts him directly into the middle of an uprising in Spain. A man at the wrong place and the wrong time, he ends up on everyone's list to track down and either sentence, kill, or befriend. It is absolutely a comedy of errors with a fun and unforseen twist at the end. Definitely worth reading!!

I was given an advance reader copy of Public Enemy by Simon Brading. This was the first book I read by Brading and it most definitely will not be the last. Public Enemy is a political commentary/historical fiction surrounding the MC, Peter Brown, a British man living in Spain during the Catalonia Independence Movement. Peter is a passive, down on his luck misfit who finds himself pegged as a potential terrorist when he is mistakenly drawn into a protest.
The story follows Peter as he attempts to proclaim his innocence and find supports to help him escape police prosecution. The main character as well as his sloppy American friend are so well developed that as a reader you route for them and feel for them. The story is laced with comedic relief that left me laughing out loud, adding so much to the story. The story is face paced and an enjoyable read.
Public Enemy is so well done. The end of the book left me staring at the wall for many minutes, I loved the twists and turns. I throughly enjoyed this book and will look for more by Mr. Brading. I will be recommending this book to anyone looking for a great read.
