Kings and Kingdoms #3

Pups and Wolves

Rate this book
Stolen from the men who love them, trapped in the forest by a hostile wolf pack, the pups must summon all their bravery and cunning to escape and make it home. But help arrives from them from the most unexpected people in the most unexpected places. There are more things going on in the forest than anyone is aware of, though. An army is on the move, and they might just be unstoppable. Is it worth being rescued when the entire frontier is about to be thrown into turmoil anyhow?Pups and Wolves is the third book in the Kings and Kingdoms series. It follows the Peter and the Wolves and Sons of the Cities series. All books in these three series should be read in order, beginning with Peter and the Wolves. BUT, to be honest, you could read Pups and Wolves before Friends and Enemies and be just fine, since the two stories take place simultaneously.

The first two books in this series returned to Peter’s POV. Which is fitting, since we started this journey with him. But this book was from the alternating POV of Renz and Sascha, which was a surprise to me.

This book was like an aside to the main story. This is what happened to the pups during the events of Friends and Enemies. There is note at the end from the author that says it doesn’t matter which order read book 2 and 3 in since they happen simultaneously and don’t spoil each other.

This book did not make me like Sascha more. He keeps claiming to love Oskar but his thoughts are always on Peter. I’m glad he doesn’t want a part of the political action. But of course he did so much to save the pups. He is a good man although a very annoying one.

This book had almost no spicy scenes. There was one brief scene between Renz and Kliment, and one horrific grape scene that had me in tears.

This is one of those books that I enjoyed, and it moved the story along, and it served its purpose for the series, but didn't quite hit the notes I've come to expect. A lot of that had to do with the limitations of POV for this installment, which I'm not sure I agreed with -- with one exception.

Peter might not be in this book, but I adored that we got to finally come full circle to the beginning of his journey and reunite with not necessarily an old friend, but definitely a formative influence in his life. I still don't love this character, but I absolutely now sympathize with him, and that is the mark of excellent storytelling I have come to rely on from this dynamic series.

Definitely would have been better to read this before Friends And Enemies. Knowing what happens in that book kinda makes me not really feel the same stakes the characters feel in this book.

Anyways. Pretty exciting story although not very steamy ever.
