Good Bad Magic #2

Right Wrong Shifter

Rate this book
Good witch by vocation, bad witch by reputation.

Things are going great! I survived the sabotage of my witch shop and a murder attempt, my business and personal life are thriving, and Ian’s estranged half brother and local shifter alpha wants me to make him a dark magic potion.

Okay, maybe not that great.

Turns out, Hutton has been keeping a huge secret, and he needs dark magic to keep it that way before a group of visiting “friendly” alphas figure out something’s up and make a move on his territory.

Problem is, the kind of potion Hutton needs is well beyond a good witch’s power, and if I don’t figure something out, not only will the pack lose their home, but Hutton will blame me and take my shop and dreams down along with him.

With time running out, what’s a witch to do but shore up on affirmations, involve a certain bounty hunter who doesn’t want to get involved, and bend a few rules?

Join Hope in her quest to have the best witch shop in the Urban Fantasy world of Good Bad Magic, featuring witches, shifters, demons, one sexy bounty hunter, and all kinds of magical creatures. Full of humor, banter, plenty of heart, and a slow-burn romance.

Hope Avery has managed to survive an attempt on her life, as well as an attempt to take over her witch shop. Surely, it can only get better from now on? Then she gets a call from Hutton, Ian's half brother and Alpha of the shifter pack. It turns out he’s got a secret and needs dark magic to keep it.

I like this book even more than the first one! Hope continues to avoid having to deal with dark magic, but still solves her client's problems in the end. Ian reminds me of Ranger in Janet Evanovich's books about Stephanie Plum; a bounty hunter (although semi-retired) who always dress in black. I love the interactions between Hope and Ian - they really are sunshine and grumpy! It's also refreshing with a slow burn romance! Highly recommended, but read Good Bad Witch first!

I love Hope. And by love I mean that she's the opposite of me. I'm the kind of grumpy character that Hope would collect. She'd find me by pure accident, and I'd be annoyed by her sunshine, and I'd be grumbling all day long, just like Dru, but I'd stick around because I love Hope. This is a light-hearted and cozy series with a wonderful witch. Best enjoyed with a hot chocolate on a cold winter's day, but will make the perfect beach read as well.

Hope Avery survived a dark witch, negative ratings on social media and a murder attempt but now she has the leader of the local pack, Hutton, coming to her for dark magic and worse he's Ian's brother, who she secretly thinks Ian's proud of so, it's complicated.

Hope is more self assured in this book and I'm here for her affirmations and determination to do the best for her community. Key, a new addition to the series was a new favorite in this book but Fluffy is still in the lead.

I absolutely recommend this series for fans of fun mysteries and slow burn urban fantasy.

This latest installment was better than the first, but I still found Hope to be unbelievably naive and gullible. Especially after being burned several times, I expected her to learn something from the past.

However, Hope was also honest and earnest about always doing the right thing—and this installment had a good resolution—so I’ll probably continue the series. I just hope she smartens up a bit. I loved Ian.

It's possible that Hope Avery has catapulted to my growing number of favourite witches. After the previous book she definitely was a major contender but with this book? Yeah, right up there with the best of them! Why, you might ask? I'll start off with this: "How do I love thee, Let me count the ways...."
A: she has no idea what she's doing but she's goodness personified, B: she's totally out of her depth but somehow finds a way, C: she's delightful, D: she's funny, E: she bumbles and stumbles into really weird situations, what fun watching her get out of them, F: she's exuberant and resourceful, even though the depth of her abilities is.... questionable, G: she's no pushover, H: she's smart, I: she has a real live ghost to contend with, which she does rather admirably, J: she's scheming, in the best possible way, K: she's relentless, L: she somehow manages to turn everything into a positive, M: she IS positive, she even does daily affirmations! See? I could use up the entire alphabet, easily! But you should read it to get the full extent of her awesomeness. Suffice to say, the author has created one of the most likeable, fallible characters that has me cheering her on through every bump in the road! And I simply adore how she compensates for her lack of her magical strength, ingenious!

The characters are no less loveable, who CAN'T love Dru, a stoic demon who's hiding how much she cares behind a fierce facade or Ian, not only is he rather yummy, he's so ultra cool and kind and compassionate and just NICE! And he has Fluffy....yes, Fluffy, the most adorable doggie ever! Oh and Rufus too. A supposeed hardened bounty Hunter, who's also a shifter but one who refuses to shift, he's sure got a soft spot! A few actually, for Hope, for his half brother, for lone shifters. Yes, he's a sweetheart, well, if you can see past his stoic unflappable expression that is. I love how tender he is towards Hope, although, in all honesty, I do feel there's a lot of Ian to still be uncovered. There's way too much unknown about him and the author, rather skilfully, dribbles a teensy bit at a time, tantalisingly teasing us. The very slow burn between him and Hope is a romance that will have you urging them, coercing them, it's just so charmingly appealing.

I loved how the author infused a newness to her characters, giving them heart and soul, even the abrasive Hutton, who seems to be a good guy, sort of...and I kinda get where he's coming from, but geez, the way he goes about it doesn't lend itself to being endearing. Except, once again, the author has a magic touch that gets one feeling a warmth for him. Ms Medina takes all the characters to a whole new level, she shows us how easy it is to do the wrong thing for the right reasons. In a way that gets me saying "aahhhh, I know why they did that, I don't agree, but I get it" It doesn't diminish the character whatsoever, in essence, it makes the characters feel ultra real, ultra normal. And trust me, this little town and it's inhabitants are anything other than normal. It's full with secrets, it's full of suspicion, it's full of lies. It's a series I highly recommend for an extremely fun read, one that will definitely have you smiling, one that will definitely have you intrigued and one that will have you looking forward to the next book, just as I am.

Sleuthing for amateurs!
Making potions for the ridiculously underprepared!
Tarot reading!
“This is your present.”
⁃ “If it’s death again, I’m flipping the table and leaving without paying.”*
⁃ “That’s sweet, but I know where you live.”*
Snappy banter!

Hope is one underpowered, overperforming witch. When faced with a demand for a potion from the local pack’s alpha, she realizes that 1) she has no idea what he is talking about, and 2) He shouldn’t need one.

This leads to a long investigation about his family, Ian’s family connections, and a desperate search to prevent a pack takeover. How does one combat evil spells without compromising one’s principles? Faking black spells only goes so far...

Complicating things, the fire mage from book 1 dumps his young niece on Hope with the words “she needs a job.” Well, so does Hope (LOL). Her shop won’t survive on two customers per day, and Hope is already splitting her time between investigating red herrings, taking care of Fluffy, and wooing Ian (in my opinion). Although wooing involves asking him for help...

The niece is morally gray. Like Hope, her powers were considered substandard. Being an earth mage doesn’t involve any flashy powers, and she just wanted to be more like her uncle. Awww...😊.

The romance: since this is a clean romance, you get kissing only, but here is a snippet:
⁃ “His lips tasted of morning coffee and mornings spent lazing around in bed*. ”

4 stars because I liked it enough to reread it later. 5 because it’s short enough for a palate cleanser that has really nice moral affirmations that surprise you and make you smile.

As I have mentioned in other reviews of this author, I absolutely love both the Magical Artifacts Institution and the Red Angel series! That said, somehow I find Good Bad Magic harder to get into. I´ve read the first book (Good Bad Witch), but found both the main characters a bit bland. In the end the story plot redeemed the book. And now almost the same thing happened with the second book. I was reading the first few chapters and could not really get into the story or care about the characters. Some time after the halfway mark I started to become more invested and was curious to see what will happen and how things will be resolved. There seem to be a bit of a disconnect between the different problems and their individual solutions. Almost like the problems seems quite intense, but then get resolved in a way that seems too easy or superficial. For example a person might have a very strong stance on something and then after a while give in or accept it without making too big a deal about how this affects them or the trust in the relationship, like the consequences are not on the same level as it was portrayed to be at the beginning.. or maybe the characters present themselves more serious than they really are. I do like that it is more light-hearted and not overly intense and dramatic, but think the story would have been better if there were more clearly developed and logical progress to a characters´ behaviour...and consequences there of. Overall, enjoyed the story and would read the 3rd one! (almost thought I wouldn´t, but it definitely got more interesting towards the end, even with its easy solutions and little consequences).

Hope is coming back with next mystery and more troubles. She is still in her probation period as an owner of the magical tea shop. Besides that local alpha needs a potion, which requires a lot of magical skills, or the deal with evil witch’s ghost, or black magic with buckets of blood, or…another solution. In addition Hutton’s request will put Hope deeper into Ian’s family past, and create some tension between brothers.

Hope is a person, which can be my friend. She’s good, supportive, a little bit sarcastic and she use her brain to solve the problems. Her life is complicated because half of the magical, local community is pretty sure that she inherited with the tea shop as well a position of local black witch…which she isn’t at all, and doesn’t plan to be.

Side characters are interesting. I really like Dru, demon which inherited the all character from stoic philosopher, but deeply inside of the heart she cares and likes Hope.
Ian in this book shows that under the cover of grumpy, cold guy is a heart, which can speed up when he sees Hope and he cares what will happen with local pack if his half-brother will be dethroned.
Finally, Ian’s dogs: Fluffy and Rufus. First is a happy, cute ball of furs, second is calm, stoic type of the guard.

Lastly but not least, we have a subplot. Hope needs to help local fire mage’s niece to find a job, but is it the only reason why Key showed up in the tea shop? She seems to be in trouble and tries to find her place.

It’s 4.5 stars read for me. I’m adding half the star for Fluffy and kiss. My only complain is how many times Hope failed with potion, it was on purpose, but for me it was long way, but I was curious what will be needed to complete it successfully.

I can’t wait for book 3. I really need to know what will happen next.

more like 3.7 stars!

i'm writing this review after reading this and the next book, and i definitely think that this book (so far) is my fav out of the series. i love that main crux is the shifter pack and derek and the lore between him and ian is so good. in the end, it's sad that lies/trickery split this family and deteriorated relationships, but hope is right, at the end of the day, these brothers somehow care for each other in a kind of convoluted and very secretive way. ian is a pretty mysterious character and so getting to know his history and these tidbits it pretty fascinating. hope is a busybody and pretty nosey but she has a good heart and i think her dedication to being 'good' even when it's so much easier and lucrative to be evil yet she remains committed to doing the right thing in her own way. and with so many morally grey mc's, that's pretty refreshing to read even though sometimes she can come off as a goody-two-shoes. but i love this slow friendship (to eventual relationship) with ian and how there is seriously no rush-- these two are just taking their sweet time getting to know each other and enjoying each other's presence. i love a good slow burn.

Another darling installment in this fun new series!

Hope has no problem self-actualizing herself into an upbeat, sunny side up, good witch. You have to love her constant positive attitude, because everything around her is going to hell in a handbasket.

She did find a way to manage her current black magic clients, through good witchcraft with a helping side of deceit, but now she has the alpha of the local pack after a black magic potion, and because of her other clients, she's readily available on the dark web—oops.

I just love Hope, and the cadre of grumpy characters she collects. Her sunshiney attitude draws them in like flies to sugar water. Even though she's low powered, refuses to do black magic, she always finds a way to help those that need it!

Just a fun story, light-hearted, and cozy like a fuzzy blanket and a cup of cocoa. You'll love Hope and her adventures!

Right Wrong Shifter picks up soon after the prior book. Ian’s estranged half brother Hutton is pressuring Hope to make his potion, but she has no idea what potion he wants or what it does. With the deadline looming, he resorts to threats to get what he wants. Hope’s going to have to get creative to figure out how to keep him happy without compromising herself in the process.

I really like Hope, I like her positivity and spunk. I like that she’s a witch with little power, but she doesn’t let that stop her from accomplishing what she sets out to do. I like Ian, we got to learn a little more about him and his brother in this book, but there’s still a lot left to reveal. This is a fun, light hearted, cozy series that I enjoy reading. I’m truly looking forward to what trouble Hope finds herself in for the next book!

It did not get better. Right from the jump, the FMC is making the same stupid decisions that she made in book 1, as if she has half the intelligence of a turnip.

This fucking moron has not done any dark magic, but countless dark magic users threaten her by saying they are going to reveal that she makes dark magic potions. How is that going to work, exactly? Firstly, they have to explain to the authorities that they fucking buy these dark magic potions for themselves! And brainless FMC has the fucking client ledger for the old dark witch, so she can 100% prove that these dipshits are dark magic users. She keeps whining that it is their word against hers so she has to go along, but IT ISN'T!!

And she's lying and hiding the dark magic shit again. I'm out - bailed at 26%. Fucking dumbass.

In this book we dive a bit deeper into the world which I like and want to see more. I liked how Hope stays optimistic and stays strong against using dark magic even though it would be so much easier to give in. She does seem naive sometimes but I appreciate she's willing to help regardless. I appreciate that she's willing to think outside of the box.

Glad we get to see more interaction between her and Ian. I enjoyed learning more about Ian's background and the tentative relationship between him and his brother.

It continues to be a slow burn but I love the romantic tension between the two! For some reason I really want Fluffy and Rufus to have some secret powers or something and secretly report to Ian as part of his pack. Love those pups. Lol

3.4 out of 5 rating for me!

I was hoping that this book would be a little bit less boring than the first one but I was disappointed. It didn’t actually get interesting until closer to the end. The one thing that really irritated me in this book was the way that Hope treated fluffy like she was the greatest thing since sliced bread, and the fact that she kept talking about getting her a Vest for therapy so that she could take her inside places. If she’s not a working dog, she does not belong in a place and therapy. Dogs are not included in this. The author needs to get things right if she’s going to put stuff like that in a book. I’m not sure if I’m going to read the next book in the series because they don’t seem to be getting any better.

Hope is such an entertaining character. Her internal musings kept me chuckling! It's not all fun and laughter though, as there are plenty of serious moments to be found. Hope is such a positive person, but she seems to attract grumpy people like a magnet. Finding the path to navigate through all their situations is really keeping her on her toes.

I'm really enjoying this series. The growth of her relationship with Ian has progressed really well and I totally love the way that Fluffy fits in amongst it all.

Bring on part 3 - I'm really looking forward to it! Thank you to Isa Media for my copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Wowie!

This new series is wonderful and the 2nd book is no exception. Our intrepid MC whimsical in some aspects, and, while not hardened, has a stubbornness that is adorable when she tries to get her way.
This book starts shortly after the first and a new challenge awaits. Will she turn to dark magic? Will she go unto a Grey area? Will her kinda, sorta, love interest help her again? Will he thaw any?
It's an amazing ride and well worth the read. I highly enjoyed it and laughed out loud a couple times.

Blood

Blood is life, however, drinking blood or being washed in blood is a bit much. Freely given vs unwilling donors for such activity is a debate all on its own. Taking away agency to do irreparable harm to another up to death is evil. Hope wants to right wrongs. Some can't be fixed, others can only get a band aide at best. Getting Ian to help his brother might be the biggest challenge Hope has faced yet. Where there is love, there is hope. Hope will do anything to nurture love.

This is such a good read! Hope is a fantastic character, strong, feisty & very entertaining as once again we jump onboard this crazy train! She is a ray of light amongst a bunch of old grumps in this fun and lighthearted addition and With challenges to overcome, our witch has her work cut out for her. It’s a fantastic addition to this series as we visit this town and its secrets and I cannot wait to read more!

I am loving this series... our sweet heroine is running a tea & magic shop and solving mysteries and injustices along the way.
the characters are wonderful, you start out wanting to slap or ignore them, but than as our sweet heroine bumbles on through the nastiness of each character we learn to either love or hate them.
I really enjoy how she is turning the dark magic to the bright and light side :D positivity for the win

Didn't I say earlier I am not really into shifters and vampires, yet here I am reading yet another shifter, witch, demon book? The characters are vivid, the background is well laid, and the plot is straightforward. The premise is finding out how to make a potion to give the local Alpha. Did not see that coming. The answers were hard to find, but it all finally worked out in the end. Yes folks! I sucked at book reports all during high school, too! I definitely recommend this book.

I am thoroughly enjoying this series thus far. I love Hope. I love Hope and Ian and the slow burn romance/ sunshine and grumpy trope (in the best way).

However, it being a series, I didn’t think I’d have so many things from the first book recapped. It could just irritate me because I’m reading them back to back and the first book was fresh in my mind.

But again, a cozy witchy series that I am loving 🥰

The Alphas are in town for a meeting and Hppe has a problem. Hutton, the local packs Alpha, and Ian's brother, needs a potion. A dark potion. He doesnt have Alpha powers and he has been using a potion to fake it. Then Hope finds out two other Alphas want to take over his pack via potion and she starts down the path to stop them. And she needs Ian's help to do it. Throw in an Earth mage wanting to change her power and it's quite an adventure!

A great 2nd book in the series!

I am loving this series, Hope has such creative ways to solve the problems that are sent her way. And the latest one is how to give someone Alpha powers when they should have them naturally, and have been hiding that they don't for years!
Must also say that I love Ian's logic at the end and I look forward to more of it soon!

Good Read! Very happy our girl is finally with a very handsome and protective big bad shifter. A bit of a goody two shoes, but really like the author’s message that being good and positive does help you through life. I am excited for the third installment! I do hope we get to see more of their relationship develop!

This is a really cute book and a great continuation to the first story. The main character is optimistic in the face of everything, nothing gets her down! Sometimes you just want her to get mad. :)
There is a slow burn development between her and a dark secretive shifter. I really look forward to the next installment in the story.

The second installment. I really adore this book. Hope is just so positive, no matter what the problem is, Hope will sort it. This time its to help out Derek, a Alpha who doesn't play fair, but with Hope on the case and her cheeryness it will all come together.
This series is so so good, and really puts a a smile on you're face. It's so worth the read.

Love this series, Hope is such a wonderful character always trying to find the positive in things. New characters introduced plus more development of characters we already know. Love that Hope and Ian’s relationship has developed a bit further look forward to more on that in the next book. This is a fun read with a mystery to solve, and wonderful support including Fluffy and Rufus.

Still very enjoyable!

I love how positive Hope is, even when things seem as bad as they can be. That was clear in the first book, and that remains true in this one. Her relationships with members of her new community are deepening, which should make her place there apparent to the Council. I’m looking forward to what happens next!

I really enjoy love Isa's writing, and this book is no different! I was in a reading rut and really tore through the second half of this book. The characters are flawed, but endearing, and the flaws honestly just add to the charm and the realism. I love Hope's goodness and refusal to change her principles, despite all her challenges. Can't wait to read the next!
