Nevermore County, 1922: Slaughter at a speakeasy! A mysterious creature has killed all the revelers at an illegal bar. It left nothing behind but bottles of tainted moonshine and a trail of orange slime.
For a bootlegger like Mabel Harrison, this situation could be a professional catastrophe. Now, she’s got to team up with the most prominent gangster around to discover who made the poisoned liquor. Unfortunately, Boyd Cassiday is also her too-handsome, too-charming ex-boss. Mabel is still furious that the big idiot fired her. Somehow they need to work together, though, because an ooze monster is hunting the streets of their small town. …And it might just have its sights set on Mabel.
Welcome to Nevermore County, where falling in love can be terrifying!
(M/F, HEA, no cheating, 54,000 words, is part of a series but is a stand-alone story which can be read in any order.)
I love B horror movies because they make me laugh and there are always surprises. There's an ease to them that's pure entertainment and that's the feeling I got with Love vs the Ooze Monster! I liked the setting of the story as a loose interpretation of the 1920s. I wasn't crazy about the use of 20s lingo as chapter headers, only because the lingo was then usually used in the first couple sentences so I'd read the header and then the word and it felt awkward. But having the H and h involved in bootlegging was really fun!
I'm a big fan of Cassandra Gannon's books and esp how she writes men and women who are absolutely devoted to each other, often from first sight. I've said it before and I'll say it again too, her female characters also have agency and capabilities that they're not afraid to bust out to save themselves and others. Boyd (H) is a bootlegger and running the docks in their town. Mabel (h) is his bookkeeper (and personal obsession). He's been gone for Mabel since first meeting her and as the story progresses, we learn that she felt the same way. They had such wonderful chemistry with banter and acceptance of who the other was. Boyd kills anyone who looks at Mabel sideways and Mabel gets shit done, which are esp great characteristics to have when an orange jellyfish monster suddenly starts wreaking havoc in your town. Some friction does exist between them, Boyd starts off the book thinking she's betrayed him, but it's very lighthearted and doesn't feel angsty. Written in third person, multi-POV including some villains. No ow/om drama (though H is super possessive) and h is a virgin while H is not (only vague references to the fact that he had been with others and he was celibate from the time he met h six months earlier).
There's an almost fated mate kind of feel to the romance but there's also a genuine connection present. There are a couple of steamy scenes but it's not the focus of the story, although Boyd does bring up sex in terms of when they can fit it on the schedule and what sort of outfits they might like to try. Not just the ooze monster is out to get our main characters though, there are other enemies afoot and the book does have graphic violence in places, sometimes OTT.
The book ends on a HFN in that the ooze monster does get defeated, as do any lingering enemies. You can safely assume that Boyd and Mabel will be together forever, running their town, because it's made clear that they're it for each other over and over. I had told a friend before I started this book that I needed my next read to be a fun and quick one because of the prior read and this perfectly hit the spot.
A fluffy love story with a horror movie style backdrop. This book was very original and the concept fun and intriguing. I really liked the tongue in cheek humour and fun banter between the mains, but for all this book was about two gangsters/bootleggers fighting an ooze monster ala The Blob, this lacked action. The romance had very little romance, they were already in love before the book started, and the monster parts were very low stakes and easily solved. This was a weird one for me, as I liked the author’s straightforward writing style and the personality she infused in this, and I did laugh several times, but it all felt a little flat for me.
I love reading about the roaring 20s I love a feisty, smart h who can make her situation work in her favour I love humour I actually "get" stuff that's cute abs funny and not immature and crass I absolutely love an obsessed hero who'll unalive anyone for his lady love I love a hero who from the moment he beets his h knows that she's it for him I love an interesting and fun plot
Bottom line? I loved this crazy horror, adventure rom/com adventure 😂 Obviously this book is not to be take seriously as the main bad guy is an ooze monster that I still have no idea of how he actually turned into a moving killing beast....but for what it is? I loved it!
Poor Mabel is a lonely spinster; nerdy and over 30. What could Boyd, our handsome, charismatic MMC possibly see in her?! I mean, she wears glasses and loose, unflattering clothes.
... She also has the tall, sylphlike body of a fashion model, dark shiny hair, pouty bow-shaped lips, and stunning hazel-gold eyes like Ana de Armas. So... ya know... Hollywood plain. 😂🤣💋
Okay, despite my teasing, this was a really fun, quirky, short book. It's set in the '20s, but it has the banter of a '40s screwball comedy and the campiness of a '60s horror flick.
Did I mention 'touch her and die', he pursues, she holds a grudge, tons of banter (worth mentioning twice!) and morally gray shenanigans?
Cassandra Gannon is one of my favorite authors and I’ve almost read the entirety of her repertoire, so obviously I read this the moment I saw it was released. And while it wasn’t my favorite book of hers, I thought it was an enjoyable and entertaining read.
Gannon just has this way of creating characters that are entirely gone for each other in the best way possible. Honestly, I think her male mc’s are truly some of the best ive ever read. They are so devoted and in love with the fmc that you just can’t get enough of them. Boyd was no exception to this, he loved Mabel from about the moment he met her (apparently it took him 2 days to figure that out). Seriously, reading about how obsessed he was made me sad to know that guys like that don’t actually exist 😭.
Everything Cassandra Gannon touches is pure gold! This books is so much fun and her characters have such amazing chemistry. Adding it to my yearly reread pile.
Loved this one, 4.5 stars. I forgot how fun CG's writing is, this did not disappoint! It was a refreshing story for me as I was coming off an intense Viking Omegaverse series and needed a break in the worst way. Right off the bat you get to suspend belief (Ooze monster?) and you are immersed in 1920's slang and perspective.
Example each chapter starts off with some trivia: Know Your Onions: (1920s slang) Possessing extensive knowledge of any single subject; Not necessarily related to onions. "When it came to bookkeeping, Miss Mabel Harrison really knew her onions."
Our hero Boyd and heroine Mabel have known each other for a little while before we join the story and I found that I liked that format. It skips ahead the relationship to being more familiar.
Boyd is in love with Mabel but has yet to break the ice when she is exposed: “Lew said you reminded him of himself, as a young man.” Mabel adjusted her adorable glasses, not looking anything like the liar she apparently was. “It’s why I felt confident about approaching you. I adored my stepfather, so I trust his judgment on people.” ---------- “Lew and I helped each other. I will never help Sly do anything, except maybe walking in front of a bus.”
Boyd is confronting Mabel with some truths he has discovered, which leads to Mabel believing she is fired (which is hilarious when she fumes about it over and over to him later in the story) and Boyd scrambling since he knows it is a very bad idea to let her go. And how he had to scramble to fix it!
I liked Boyd and Mabel right off the bat, great characters. The angle with Lew and the book Boyd inherited. And I loved that Mabel embraces her criminal mind and makes no excuses for it. And Boyd finds that VERY hot :)
Mabel has no rose colored glasses when it comes to Boyd: "Mabel’s suspicions grew. What was the big faker up to?" --------- Boyd was obsessed with uncovering the secrets of his inheritance and Mabel had the answers. He was suddenly sure of it. “Why did he leave me a kid’s book?” He asked, his heart pounding. Whatever the reason, it was important. He sensed it. “Maybe he was going by your mental age.”
They discover the love of the criminal together: “You’re doing that wrong.” Boyd was kneeling on the back stoop of the Peaceful Slumber Funeral Parlor, fiddling with the doorknob with one hand and holding his flashlight with the other. He slanted her an unappreciative glower. “I’ve been picking locks since I was five.” “Then, you’ve been doing it wrong for the last twenty-six years.” “Do you want to try this?” He gestured towards the door. Mabel brightened. “Yes, actually…” “Too bad. I got here first.” He smirked at her and went back to his wrongheaded ways.
Mabel was still upset with him: Show him the icy mitt: (1920s slang) Shutting down advances from a jackass. Today, Mabel would show him the icy mitt. Boyd had fired her! ----but she finds herself doing this at the same time too---- Firming her lips, she headed in the direction of his voice. His home was beautiful. Large but warm. Old, but somehow modern. She loved the place. Every time she turned a corner, Mabel found herself contemplating where furniture should go and how walls should be painted. It was very aggravating.
We get the moment where all the walls come down. I love their honesty with each other: "Mabel let her forehead fall forward against his chest, thinking over everything he’d said. His hand ran up and down her back, comfortingly. “Don’t ever walk out on me, again. I’ll just come after you. You’re the only place I want to be.” She sighed and gave up being mad. “I’m sorry.” She whispered. Boyd kissed her temple. “I’m sorry, too. I handled it all badly.”
And they set up relationship boundaries while they take over the town syndicates and fight the Ooze monster: “Because I’m probably more possessive than you are, Boyd.” It was only fair to warn him. “You so much as smile at another girl and I won’t even bother to hide her body.” “I know who I belong to.” His grin was smug."
They also had a double crosser Rico to deal with: Mabel blinked. “He’s going to try and murder you?” “Of course.” Mabel promptly gave up her half-hearted quest for lenience. “Well, we’ll have to kill Rico as soon as possible, then. Today.” “You think we can fit it into the schedule?” He teased. “I know you’ve got the afternoon packed.” -------- I love his teasing------ She blinked. “I never said I’d marry you.” “You don’t have much of a choice. I’m sleeping with you in,” he checked the clock, “five hours. I’ve got a reputation to consider. You think I’m gonna get into bed with a girl who’s got dishonorable intentions towards me?” --------- “You’ve got about three hours left.” He reported helpfully. “Before the ‘hecking me raw in every room of the house’ portion of the evening begins?” Her tone was delightfully prim. “Oh, I doubt we’ll get to every room, on the very first night. I’m committed to the project, but it’s a big house.” “You really think I’m going to just follow along with your deviant ideas?” “Follow? No, I think you’re going to be leading the way.” She adjusted her glasses and gave a studious nod. “You’re probably right.”
They finally get a crack at the Ooze monster as well as Rico, but Boyd takes chances she doesn't agree with: "And Mabel Ann Harrison didn’t employ idiots. She just married them."
Good fun, great chemistry, honest conversation and a fun time for all! Except those consumed or shot.
Loved this book!! So much fun! The characters were perfect. I loved Boyd and his mad crazy obsessive love for Mabel. It was perfect. He was just so sure. They were so sure. I loved it.
A quirky romance with a 1920’s setting and a B movie feel.
Mabel (h) has been working for Boyd (H) for the last 6 months, and in that time she has completely transformed his bootlegging business into something incredible. Also in that time, Boyd has fallen head over heels for the “plain Jane” Mabel (take this lightly, since Mabel has the body of a supermodel and incredible eyes and cheekbones and I could continue). Coming off the back of a perceived betrayal, Boyd accidentally, kind of, maybe fires Mabel and this leads to a confrontation of their feelings for each other. Only there’s a new threat looming, and it’s taking place in the form of the Ooze monster.
I really loved this one! Boyd was boy obsessed perfect and Mabel was head strong and badass. Their partnership was so sweet and they matched each other perfectly. All their quirks and charms fit together like a puzzle, and it was awesome to read about two characters who just fit so well together. The plot worked for me, and it felt like it moved fast enough that I wasn’t getting bored but not so fast that I couldn’t keep up. I think there could have been some slightly better clarification and explanation of the whole Ooze monster thing, but at the same time I knew going in that this wasn’t going to be a serious read so the absolute ridiculousness of it all wasn’t an issue.
This is probably one of, if not the, shortest book I’ve read from this author (228 pages on Kindle) and it worked a lot better for me than her longer ones that do tend to drag out the story more than necessary. Overall a great read and highly recommended if you want the same vibes that B horror movies have but in book form.
Safety: h is a 32 year old virgin *shakes head* but I guess it fit with her character H is experienced, some mentions of his past that signify he was likely manwhore adjacent, but he had been celibate for 6 months since meeting the h No ow or om drama. Jealousy and possessiveness from both.
I've read nearly everything Cassandra Gannon has written. I'm so in love with her books.
So there is ooze monster lurking around town killing people but we don't care about that. What we do care about is that Mrs Cassidy fired Mr Harrison. HONEST TO GOD, HE FIRED HER! HOW DARE HE. Turns out, actually, he didn't. She just thought he did.
Both MCs are so dramatic and in love. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH!!! This was very short and sweet and I liked the whole storyline with her step-dad. Also, I love the way Cassandra writes her FMCs. They are very strong and capable women who have their sh*t together, without having to dampen down her MMCs and vice versa. The only thing I didn't like in this book was that the ending was so abrupt. Like it needed another chapter or two or maybe an epilogue.
Love vs The Ooze Monster read like a fun B level horror movie mixed with a 20's gangster romp. Mabel and Boyd are two successful bootleggers who've been circling each other for the last six months, trying to decide if they're brave enough to act on their attraction. When a giant orange jellyfish-like ooze monster attacks a clandestine bar they used to supply the booze to, they're worried it might affect their bottom line. Now they have to gather their gang and figure out what's going on.
Mabel and Boyd's chemistry is off the charts. I absolutely loved watching their relationship unfold. The violence was part gangster and part monster gore, but exaggerated to the point of being fun. The background world was involved and detailed, with sprinklings of 20's slang. Highly recommend!
This is a fun horror adventure romance. Since the "horror" element is just a giant people-eating orange monster, it wasn't too much for me. Gannon says she was inspired by 90s YA horror romances and I definitely see that influence though I am pretty sure none of those books had a "finger banging while hiding in a casket" scene. Also, I continue to love Gannon's propensity for both extremely smitten heroes who are all in from the jump and romantic partners who perfectly match each other's energy and are smitten right back.
I have read so many of Cassandra Gannon’s books and I’m not sure why I waited on this one. This was so fun and I loved Mabel and Boyd - their dynamic was awesome. Gannon often has the literally crazy for each other dynamic and this one falls into that category for sure. But no matter how many times I read it, it always feels natural and fun and fresh with new characters and new stories. Anyways - definitely recommend!
Not For Me. Maybe if this were a movie, I'd consider it, but as a novel, I'm not a huge fan of the insta-love or attraction playing out. And since I'm a romance-centric reader, passion and steam is a huge must for me.
This was a really fun read. Felt more like a novella. I liked the MMC and generally liked the FMC too just found that she was slightly annoying. Very slightly.
Mabel walked into the stately foyer and he felt the house come alive. The same way Boyd had come alive when Mabel arrived in his life.
This is a campy horror urban fantasy romance that takes place in 1920s.
Phew, that's a lot of genres in one book. I loved the first half but I was a bit bored by the second half. Not Cassandra Gannon's best work but it was still a fun read and I liked that it was a campy slasher in a way. I love it when authors combine multiple genres together so I liked the experimental way this was written. I also love Cassandra Gannon's obsessed heroes but that's a given.
I just read another review that said a 3 star Cassandra Gannon is a 4 everywhere else and I have to agree.
I enjoyed this one a lot. I really liked both characters and their essential good/badness— an ongoing theme in many of CG’s books.
The ooze monster was fun actually! I suppose I wish there had been a bit more angst between the two mains just to give me a bit more meat with my potatoes. But overall it was a fun book!
Safe. Virgin heroine. Hero has not been with anyone else since he first saw her. He’s obsessed. No history of his past relationships etc. no OW drama and just the tiniest OM drama because MMC is very possessive.
I’d trade my kidneys for another legendary duo like Mabel Harrison and Boyd Cassiday; they are "IT" couple. Seriously, Cassandra Gannon, I’d even consider selling my imaginary firstborn just to witness another couple like them. Buckle up because I’ve got a lot to share about this book.
Love vs The Ooze Monster kicks off the Frightful Loves series, and I’m super pumped to dive into a new series! The story is set in Nevermore County, a charming little town where folks believe in everything from supernatural beings to vampires. It’s the 1920s, a time when society was in full swing, much to the chagrin of the older crowd. Women rocked short dresses and even shorter hair, while men in fedoras were getting rich through some shady dealings. Old traditions were tossed aside, crime was on the rise, and technology was speeding everything up.
The plot centers around Mabel Harrison, a bookkeeper for one of the town’s notorious bootleggers, Boyd Cassiday. From the moment Boyd laid eyes on Mabel, he was smitten. He’s captivated not just by her looks but also by her sharp mind. But things take a dark turn when a brutal murder occurs at a speakeasy, and the whole place is mysteriously covered in a strange orange ooze that melts everything it touches.
Now, I’m not usually into historical romances, but this book had me hanging on every word. I even highlighted so many parts! You can really feel the chemistry between Mabel and Boyd; if you catch my drift. The writing is top-notch—the romance, the steamy scenes, the characters—everything just clicks. I love that both main characters know their worth and aren’t afraid to chase what they want. The balance between the plot and romance is spot on.
In short, Love vs The Ooze Monster is a must-read for anyone who enjoys vibrant covers and high-concept horror stories with a spicy romantic twist.
This felt very underdeveloped. Not only did the characters basically fall in love within the first few chapters, but the entire plot and solution to the main problem was explained before the 50% mark.
This is also the second book I’ve read by this author where all women (other than the fmc) are portrayed as mean girls or just down right villainous. Yes women can be bad people, but they can also have positive traits that make them complex and multidimensional. Or.. now here’s a new and slightly crazy idea.. there can be a woman side character that gets along with the fmc! *Collective gasp from the audience* Mothers cover their children’s ears* People shake their heads in disbelief* (ok i promise I’m done w/ that). Last thing I’ll say about this, if I have to even slightly question whether a book passes the Bechdel test, then there might be an issue with how the characters are written *steps off soap box*
Things I liked: - the ooze monster was so much fun! Like come on that’s straight out of a Scooby Doo episode
-the author KNOWS how to write campy shit (e.g. the aforementioned ooze monster)
- the whole roaring 20s aesthetic was a total vibe
- MCs obsessed with each other (even though I personally feel like there could have been more tension/ less insta love)
I have been speed reading Cassandra Gannon’s book like no other. SHE IS SO FREAKING UNDERRATED AND THIS BOOK IS SO UNDER-APPRECIATED.
I am sorry but Boyd✨ AHHHHH. Where can I get my own Boyd? I don’t care if it’s in the freaking moon I would steal it if I have to like a certain hero (if you know you know)
Anyways, just wanted to review this book (which I don’t do a lot, not that it matters) because I just felt it wasn’t getting the love it deserves. I still don’t think Cassandra gets the love she deserves- she is an amazing writer it blows my mind.
Her immaculate storytelling, world building and character building is like no another. She, in my opinion excels at making character interactions, hence my love for Wicked, Bad and Ugly. Trust me they are so funny and smooth it doesn’t feel forced. This book do primarily focus on Mabel and Boyd.
Dear God, I need someone to adore me like Boyd adores Mabel. PLEASEEEE!!!!
With that I am finishing my ✨review✨
READ IT! or you will regret it yourself. 10/10 recommend
Mabel Harrison has been the accountant for 1920s mobster Boyd Cassiday for six months. During that time his profits have greatly increased, leaving him free to deal with the more physical aspects of the job (mostly killing people). Unbeknownst to him the frumpy Mabel is no newcomer to crime and is biding her time to take over Nevermore County. She's decided that Boyd is 'The One' for her and Boyd is not inclined to disagree - but first there's an orange Ooze Monster to be tackled. Written by Cassandra Gannon it is set in her sisters' (Elizabeth Gannon) world of Nevermore where ancient evil is usually just around the corner, or under your feet, or hanging from the ceiling! The banter between Boyd and Mabel is incessant, inventive and funny. “Love vs The Ooze Monster” is a bit rough around the edges - I'd guess it was written at speed - but is a really good, fast read. 4 Stars.
I just found this author recently but I'm quickly loving her books. From her author notes, shes a fun, quirky, adhd spectrum type author. Who loves writing and researching historically accurate time periods, verbiage, and other minor details that most authors wouldn't bother. As someone with the same tendency to fall down a rabbit hole of a topic. I love seeing it in books.
This book is set in 1920s (my favorite time period, I just love the bootlegger, mafia, gumshoe stories) in Nevermore County home to classic horror movie happenings with some heavy supernatural influence (aka New Orleans esthetics) featuring a mafia boss and his bookkeeper's love story, and an Ooze monster they are trying to hut down and destroy.
I loved this book it was so well written and super engaging. I definitely recommend it 10 out of 10. I can't wait to read the rest of her books.
An adventurous lighthearted romp through an alternative 1920s America. I was surprised by how lighthearted this felt, even with the criminals trying to outdo each other and all the people dying and the actual ooze monster doing its best to eat everyone. I'm a bit sad that we never get to see the main couple fall in love as their romance is already there before the story starts, albeit neither have acted on it. The alternating scenes between the romance and the hunt for the monster left little tension. It gave the sensation of being one of those campy horror movies. But regardless, this book was a nice little break from the usual plotlines I'm used to.
I think I'm in love with Cassandra Gannon and her characters. Her heroines and heros, including Mabel and Boyd here, are always so in love with each other from the beginning. The commitment, the devotion, paired with a fun historical context and the external stressor like the ooze monster, created an engaging love story. There's little angst, even though there's a monster in the dark. I also love Mabel here, who has such a character and is so bold and fearless. The couple really fit together well and balance each other out.

The elephant's adenoids, cat's miaow, ant's pants, tiger's spots, bullfrog's beard, elephant's instep, caterpillar's kimono, turtle's neck… this book - I could go on and on!
I haven’t found a book by Cassandra Gannon that disappoints yet! The flow, the humor, the whole package. *sigh*
