He’s a rake, a rogue, and a charmer…until one mission changes it all.
As one of the King’s Hunters—an elite group of Highland lawmen charged with keeping the peace—Barclay is used to lasses throwing themselves at him, despite the helmet he wears on all missions. He doesn’t mind the attention in the least…until he’s assigned to track down the runaway daughter of one of His Majesty’s supporters, and meets a woman who shouldn't be charmed.
Lady Grace MacDonald is determined not to marry the man her father has chosen for her. She may look fragile and sweet, but she has reserves of strength Barclay is about to discover. Right after he pulls her out of the bog she’s landed in. Nay, not a metaphor; an actual bog has just stolen her left shoe!
Grace might be livid the mysterious, helmed Hunter is planning to return her home, but she still has a few more days to savor her freedom…and Barclay is just the one to teach her about the world. The problem? For the first time ever, Barclay is uncertain he should be seducing a lady like her! But why, even when he’s dragging her back to marry another man, does she make him feel like a hero?
Utterly ridiculous! Another fun start to a spicy, laugh-out-loud medieval series from USA Today Bestseller Caroline Lee!
Kilty as Sin by Caroline Lee Kilty Pleasures series #1. Historical Scottish romantic comedy. Spin off from the Bad in Plaid series. Can be read as a standalone. Barclay is one of the King’s Hunters assigned to uphold the laws and protect the people. The Hunters wear a full face mask while on duty to protect their anonymity. The ladies that follow don’t care about the mask. Only their experience and expertise. And Barclay has learned the way to pleasure a lady. Lady Grace MacDonald refuses to marry the man her father has chosen for her. He’s known to be cruel with a heavy hand experienced by his late three wives. Grace escapes her home to end up stuck in a bog. She won’t let that stop her although she’s grateful for the assistance of the Hunter in getting out of the sucking bog. Barclay’s duty is to take Grace back to her father. But he can’t resist a taste of the temptress on the back of his horse. Even though she’s meant for someone else. Right?
An utterly joyful romp of a read. Wickedly funny in the most willful romantic way. Laugh out loud antics, romance and love. Don’t miss the author’s notes which add a bit of background and excuse for the fun.
This is the first book I’ve read from Caroline Lee but I have heard very good things about her books. I found Kilty as Sin a delightful read. It had me laughing out loud at the banter between the main characters and the internal monologue of both characters was hilarious! Barclay is a Hunter for the King. He is tasked with bringing home the runaway daughter of one of the King’s Lairds. Grace is the runaway daughter who doesn’t want to marry the man her father has chosen for her. She is strong and fierce when she has to be. Barclay tracks her down and finds that she is in trouble with a group of men. Barclay is impressed with her spirit as she manages to escape from the men but ends up stuck in a bog and from here the fun begins! Grace wants to be returned to the nunnery but Barclay is sworn to do the King’s bidding so Barclay and Grace slowly make their way back to Grace’s home. Along the way they become closer and although Barclay has loyalties to the King to bring her home untouched, he finds himself unable to resist Grace’s charms. He doesn’t want to leave her with her father to marry but he is obligated by his duties to the King. Once Barclay returns Grace to her father, he visits the nunnery at Grace’s request and discovers who Grace is supposed to marry. He is horrified and races back in the hope he is not too late to stop the wedding. There’s a real twist in the story at the end but even at the most tense moments of the story, humour is sprinkled in it! I love the Scottish accents, and the way I hear them in my head. There is a nice epilogue which seems to hint about who the next book will be about. I’m excited to read that one! The book isn’t a long read but it is very entertaining the whole way through. There is a very interesting relationship between Barclay and his horse, which had me giggling as I was reading. There is a good amount of steamy scenes in this book too! I really enjoyed reading this book and will continue to read more of Caroline Lee’s books in the future. I received a free copy of this book via Bookfunnel. I’m leaving this review voluntarily and all views and opinions are my own.
Caroline Lee is a genius at saucy banter, naughty innuendos, humor, strong characters and spice. She doesn’t disappoint in her newest story, Kilty As Sin which is the first book of a brand new series. Kilty A Sin kicks off the Kilty Pleasure series with the King’s Hunters, an elite group of Highland lawmen as the focal point. We are introduced to Barclay who has been charged with returning a runaway bride back to her father. Lady Grace MacDonald does not want to be forced into a marriage with a loathsome and dangerous groom, so she is on the run.
Caroline Lee’s heroines have grit and Grace has it in spades. She is determined to not be returned back even after Barclay initially rescues her from a muddy bog. In the story we have forced proximity, a road trip and a delightfully opinionated arrogant horse, well named Horse. Who can resist? I know I couldn’t as I devoured the book in a day.
As the couple travel back to Grace’s father’s holding they develop a friendship and Barclay admires her fortitude. It goes without saying that they develop a mutual attraction, but Barclay is trying hard to hold onto his code and oath to the king. Can I let you know how much I enjoy his internal monologue as he is trying to maintain his cool while having decidedly wicked thoughts about Grace. And as they act on some of their fantasy, well the fire leapt off the pages.
Was the ending satisfying? Absolutely fookinglutely! No spoilers, but one ending scene in particular had me in stiches, howling with laughter. That is but one of the many things that I adore about Caroline Lee’s books, the ability to entertain, engage and enthrall her readers. Definitely check out this story of what I am anticipating to be the first of many wonderful tales featuring the King’s Hunters.
I received an ARC of Kilty As Sin from the author and voluntarily read the book.
This was a lovely afternoon read, snuggled up under a throw with a good pot of tea. I liked the rather loose adherence to history for the telling of a good story.
Lady Grace surprised me, in a fun and good way, with her determination and gumption. She knows her own mind and is frustrated with the men in her life not listening to her, thinking she is just being selfish.
Barclay is slightly irreverent, but takes his job, as Hunter, for the King seriously. He was also surprised by Lady Grace. On the outside she looks lovely and delicate, but that shy exterior is the foil for great strength and attitude.
While Barclay's mission is to return her to her father, he almost immediately starts to question too much....the mission, the girl, his dedication to his job, the mission(yes I mentioned it twice - he questioned it the most), and his own feelings. Grace is trying desperately to find a way NOT to end up back at home with her father.
The final betrayal of her father and it's consequences had me angry for Grace and at Barclay for his actions. Thankfully, Grace and Barclay had an ally that helped to present the situation in a clear unemotional manner that left no question what needed to be done. Barclay's grand gesture came at the best time and it took care of a multitude of injustices and horrors. I appreciated the humor Ms. Lee brought to final moments, I kept grinning.
I am off to catch up with the other Hunters. I look forward to catching up and awaiting new adventures in the worlds of Ms. Lee.
A Rescue, A Plan, A Wish and Endearing Romance This is terrific story from a very talented author that knows how to capture my attention from the very beginning and holds it to the very end. This has a passionate romance plot of two wonderful and charismatic characters. Barclay a very handsome lawman who is part of the elite Kings Hunters. He is on a mission to find Grace who has run away from her father and an unwanted marriage. Retrieving her is not an easy task but bringing her back home just became much harder or at least much more interesting. This is a romance story, so you know the attraction between them changes the plot quite a bit. There are several charming moments between Barclay and Grace along with some humous banter that had me smiling many times. One of my favorite segments was the tutelage scene. It was something I truly enjoyed, and it set the pace for their budding romance. At the end there is a very shocking disclosure that took me by surprise and added another dimension to their predicament. ✔Special Mention goes to the delightful horse, whose name made me laugh. ✔Sister Mary who captured my heart. ✔Mature Advisory: Fan worthy. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced ARC copy for my honest thoughts and opinion.
Kilty As Sin by Caroline Lee follows in the footsteps of her laugh out loud medieval historical romcoms. Barclay is one of the King’s Hunters. We’ve met him previously in Plaid Attitude from her Bad In Plaid series where he was a bit of a flirt. Honestly, I was more interested in Lady Grace MacDonald. She’s such a strong and fiercely independent woman who is willing to take her fate into her own hands.
Of course, this is a romcom so Barclay is dashing and heroic, but Grace is well on her way to rescuing herself until their meet-cute. Barclay had a traumatic childhood, and it could be argued that Grace is experiencing trauma of a different sort at the beginning of the book. Please note that physical assault and sexual assault are both addressed in this book.
I enjoyed this series starter, and I do believe it is still a romcom even though it addresses some difficult issues. I found myself laughing out loud, especially in scenes where Barclay’s horse had a starring role.
I’m looking forward to Payton’s story. We briefly met him in this book, but I believe there’s more to his story than meets the eye.
I received an ARC from the author. The opinions expressed above are mine.
As one of the King’s Hunters, an elite group of Highland lawmen charged with keeping the peace, Barclay is used to lasses throwing themselves at him, despite the helmet he wears on all missions. His latest assignment is to track down the runaway daughter of one of His Majesty’s supporters& return her to her father. Grace might be livid the mysterious, helmed Hunter is planning to return her home, but she still has a few more days to savour her freedom The first in a new series, we met The King’s Hunters in the previous serious & also met Barclay. Another fun, hilarious romp with strong characters & a story, which flows effortlessly. I loved both Barclay & Grace, he’s just doing his job but finds it increasingly hard to return Grace. She’s strong, feisty & determined not to marry her father's choice. The chemistry between the couple sizzles & their banter is a delight. There’s also a highly intelligent horse called Horse! I always love the Author's notes at the end, which show the author really knows her stuff but just tweaks things a little! My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Heeeere we go again with Caroline Lee and her shenanigans…and ya know how I feel about Ms. Lee and her shenanigans….they are always recommended. She's back with a brand new medieval series called Kilty as Sin and it's hilariously entertaining! The characters are absolutely fantastic, the banter is sharp and delightful, and the book is practically a Mel Brooks-style spectacle!
In the grand cast of characters within this book, there's an undeniable scene-stealer, and his name? Horse. Yes, you heard it right – Horse is, indeed, a four-legged equine marvel. Get ready 'cause just like me, you'll be head over hooves for this charming steed.
Tasked with finding and returning the missing daughter of the king's friend…Barclay MacGill, one of the Kings hunters is surprised to find a woman unlike the one he imagined. Lady Grace may look sweet and innocent, but she's anything but and will do just about anything to save herself from the cruel and ruthless man that sir hunter is returning her to.
Kilty as sin is just so much darn fun and will have you in stitches from beginning to end. Y'all there is a scene at the end…straight ignant I tell you. I laughed so hard I cried. I can't recommend Kilty as Sin enough.
Barclay serves as one of the King’s Hunters which is an elite group charged with keeping the peace. When they are on duty, they are to wear their helmet showing they work for the king. His new mission is to find a Laird’s runaway daughter and bring her home to her father. As he finds she is being followed, he hopes to find her before the others do but has just found out it is too late. Lady Grace MacDonald ran away as she doesn’t want to marry the Laird her father demands she marry. He is a cruel man who abuses the women in his clan as well as has killed his other wives. Barclay finds out really quick that she is feisty and isn’t going down without a fight. He never dreamed that by returning her to her father that her father would drug her so he could marry her to the Laird with her unconscious the entire time. Will Barclay return in time to save her now knowing who her intended husband is?
This book is the first in a spin-off series of the Bad in Plaid series. King’s Hunter Barclay is tasked with finding and returning a runaway daughter of one of the King’s supporters. Grace is a plucky young woman determined to escape an arranged marriage to a cruel Laird who has already killed a few wives off already. The only thing that jarred with the story was Barclay and Grace’s father both rejecting her objections to this marriage. Barclay is giving me Mandalorian vibes but once that helmet is off – [WOW], he shows Grace what pleasure can be had between a man and a woman. When he realises who her betrothed is he fears he may be too late to proclaim his feelings and claim her for himself. Also, Horse is the bestest horse you will ever have by your side and Horse is just the bestest name ever. (Sorry Grace).
If you’re trying to read this author’s work in order that connects characters from series to series I suggest reading this book after the Bad in Plaid series. There are mentions of previous King’s hunters that married Oliphant daughters and a few other characters from that series.
The first in book in the new series we meet Lady Grace escaping from her father’s own men who mean her harm only to get herself stuck in a bog. King’s Hunter, Barclay we met in Bad in Plaid and is on a mission to return Grace home. The journey home is free of any danger which allows for time for the MC to learn about and fall in love with each other. A few twists once Grace is returned home makes for an entertaining and lighthearted HR read you expect from this author.
Barclay’s next mission from the King is to track down a lady who has run away, and bring her back to her father so she can marry the neighboring laird. He finds and rescues Grace from a gang of men who captured her outside the convent where she was hiding, and then proceeds to bring her home. Grace is adamant that she not marry the man she’s engaged to, since that man is cruel and monstrous. Although Barclay is desperately attracted to Grace, he attempts to fulfill his duty to the King and remain honorable. We get to see how Barclay’s past ties into Grace’s future when he finally decides to rescue her from her betrothal. We get the reappearance of the nuns from the previous series, which is always fun to read.
I would normally not expect the first book in a new Medieval series to be so LOL funny. However, I forgot who I was dealing with when reading “Kilty as Sin” by Caroline Lee. I got such a kick out of Barclay and Lady Grace MacDonald’s interactions, witty banter and inner dialogue that I did not want it to end. Funny as the story may be, there are a couple of seriously tense moments as well. In all honesty, I probably could have done without Barclay constantly saying “St. Pancras”. Only because I kept thinking “pancreas”. Huge shout out to Caroline for the nod to an absolute Icon during the funniest death scene ever written! Priceless! I hereby dub Caroline Lee the Mistress of Historical Humor.
I received an E-Arc from the author, and this is my voluntary honest review.
4.5 This is of course hilarious because that’s what she said! We have Grace who flees to a nunnery to avoid wedding a vile man who has killed 3 brides prior! The kings Hunter is involved and thankfully he tracks her down after 3 men from her father violate her Barclay is a bastard but a beautiful man who has slept with literally hundreds of women with and without a helmet! He is tempted by Grace but honors her betrothal. He leaves her in her father care but it’s not until he delivers a message to Sister Mary Titiana that he fully realizes the evil that Grace faces! Will Barclay rescue Grace and if so what future can a bastard and a Laird daughter have!? There are some laugh out loud moments as these two rescue each other and fall in love! Bravo
Kilty as Sin is a fun tale with a bit more serious manner than Caroline’s standard fare. Our heroine is on the run, and encounters numerous obstacles to avoid a horrible marriage. Our hero, has a rough past but can’t help but fall for this strong, surprising woman. Barclay and Claire will take you on a wild ride, filled with wit and chemistry and a horse named Horse! As always the innuendos will have you chuckling, the romance will fill your heart and the passion will heat you up. A great start to another exciting series. And you know Payton is in for his own wild chase as he vows “no women” for him!
The Hunters are back! And the nuns too! And the gorgeous brand of Caroline Lee’s fun! I love the convent with its improbable nuns who distribute wise pieces of advice in many a topic, pleasure included! And those hot Hunters with their mysterious helmets? You never know what you’ll find on top of those gorgeous bodies of them! This was a wonderful novel with a bit of suspense, a bit of angst, a bit of adventure and plenty of humor. I loved both characters and I rooted for them and their HEA! A Caroline Lee’s book is always a guarantee of endless fun! I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
"Do ye need me to pull over?" "Pull over what?"... "Pull over the reins to get to the side of the path..."
🤦♀️😂
This and other quips - nonsense in the book's setting - made me LOL. The meshing of modern vernacular with a time that is ignorant of the modern meaning somehow works and is hilarious - but I'm very certain that only Caroline Lee could get away with it. I expect it in her books by now and think I'd be sad if it wasn't there.
But - I do need to be 'in the mood' for this kind of slapstick silliness lest I fail to appreciate it.
Read this book if you have a sense of humor and are not afraid to laugh.
First book in New series, which is great news for as it follows on immediately from the Bad in Plaid series I've just finished. Downside is I have to wait for the next book in the series.
We met Barclay the Kings Hunter in the last book in Bad in Plaid, so I enjoyed seeing find his happy ever after, and that his chosen lady was worth of him. Great to see characters reappearing - Mother Titania, and hear of the Oliphants again.
Only two little negatives, the book is too short, barely an evenings reading, and there are only two books in this series. (Maybe more will appear there are many hunters after all).
Grace runs from her home when her father would not change his mind about making her marry Laird MacGill who was a neighbor. Someone who was a cruel man by what Laird McGill had told Grace he would do to her. Grace’s father had no idea. She goes to St. Dorcas the Ever-Petulant and Mother Superior gives her sanctuary. Grace goes to the market for Mother Superior when she is kidnapped by men she thought her father had sent after her. Grace’s father sends word to the king that his daughter is missing and the king sends his hunter Barclays to find and return her home.
Another great and humorous story by Caroline Lee, you will love it.
Absolutely loved Barclay and Grace's story of pasdion, atteaction and love. It is fill of Caroline's unique wit and wonderful characters.
Barclay is a King's Hunter and assigned to return Grace back to her father, Grace however has no intention of returning quietly to marry a man who is as cold, cruel and evil as rumours would have it. Grace ran as her father didn't believe her protestations instead he thought he spoilt and ungrateful, can she persuade Barclay of the truth whilst striving to keep from losing her heart to this wonderfully kind, gentle and passionate man.
Caroline Lee is nothing but joy — any historical that has kilts, sword fights, and “that’s what she said” jokes is going to make me happy. The road trip/bodyguard elements were so swoony, and I adored how Barclay wanted to do anything he could to protect Grace.
The novella length challenged me; I wish they could have spent more time traveling together and less time dealing with the villain, but that’s my personal preference. Overall, as with everything I read from Caroline Lee, it was a heck of a lot of fun.
Thank you to Caroline for the advance copy; all opinions are my own.
It is 5* for sure but I have one complaint - I have waited for so long and I have read it in one short evening! The book was absolutely delightful and to reconnect with sister Mary Titania was an unexpected perk! I love Caroline Lee channeling her Monthy Python vibe, and the final death scene had me in stitches! And to "Mayo nays".... let's not talk about that. I have a kid and by some cosmic/genetic miracle, this daddy joke was funny too.... I am just not going to tell anybody :D Can't wait for the next book!
Barclay is one of the King’s Hunters sent to retrieve a runaway daughter of one of his supporters. He didn’t expect her to be so beautiful. Grace is the daughter of laird MacDonald and her father has basically sold her to the evil Laird MacGill who has already killed 3 wives. Barclay’s sense of duty to his king has him returning Grace to her father even though he doesn’t want to leave her. The only option for Grace then is to escape her father again. But evil is afoot and both Grace and Barclay are running out of time.
Caroline Lee never disappoints! This story is a great beginning to a new series. I loved the King’s Hunters from the Bad In Plaid series and can’t wait to find out what is next for all of them. Barclay and Grace are wonderful main characters. The Mandolorian and Tina Turner references cracked me up. The big death scene made me laugh out loud. If the new Laird isn’t mentioned in the next book, I’m going to need a bonus epilogue for how things went with that.
A Hillarious Starter! This was Grace and Barclay's amazing adventure into righting wrongs and finding a happy ever after – all done with a tiny bit of seriousness and a whole lot of tongue in cheek humour. And I loved it all! So, if this is the first book in this series, then I can hardly wait to read the rest of them. I read an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) and am happy to record my voluntary review of it.
Sent to find a runaway daughter, the Hunter Barkley never realized the challenges he would encounter. Grace wasn't what he expected and she made him wish. She knew her life needed rescued, her intended was evil. This delightful story keeps one flipping pages and smiling. Lots of pun and fun ! You won't be able to stop until " This was the beginning of the wonderful forever."
It was so fun and so ridiculous, and I literally loved every second.
On top of the humor, I actually was really invested in the love story. I was 100% rooting for Barclay and Grace. Both were fierce and were a worthy pair.
Come for the romance, stay for Horse, shoe-eating bogs, and scandalous nuns!
This author never disappoints with her sense of humor and outlandish stories. I loved Barclay and Lady Grace's story. These two have an instant connection but he has to honor his pledge to the King. Things don't go as he expects and it all makes for a captivating read.
Ok, not going to lie--the 'Tis what she said jokes will always be funny to me, and this one has a few. Caroline Lee's jokes are rich in (slightly) twisted history, smexy good times, and always a lot to laugh about. Kilty as Sin continues the themes I've come to expect from her books, so this was an easy one-click read for me.
Need an escape from your troubles? All I need is a hot Highlander and an afternoon filled with double entendres, clairvoyant horses, wicked Lairds and a happily ever after. I await her next Kilty Pleasure with breathless anticipation. Just read anything by Caroline Lee and enjoy!
