Callum Reece. My late husband’s brother. The man who took my virginity and then left without so much as an I’m sorry. The Marine operator who makes a living from putting his life on the line.
But loving me? That had been too much of a risk.
I’m the one woman he can’t have.
After he left, I moved on. I built a life without Callum ...until it came crashing down around me. All I want is to find out the truth about my husband’s death, no matter what it may be.
Sometimes the forbidden is a dangerous temptation.
But when Callum comes back, determined to win my heart, I’ll have to put up the fight of my life to avoid being hurt again.
Nicole Blanchard is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the TikTok-viral dark romance Toxic, a wildly addictive bestseller that has sold over 90,000 copies worldwide. Known for her morally gray antiheroes, off-the-charts heat, and jaw-dropping twists, Nicole’s stories drag readers deep into love’s darkest corners—where no one escapes unscarred.
When she’s not crafting twisted love stories that break your heart and then heal it, you can find her soaking up beach sun with a glass of sweet tea, getting inked, or running a farm full of lovable misfit animals.
Callum's come home. He hasn't wanted to do this, but a phone call gets him moving. Now he's about to come face to face with the only woman he's ever loved - his brother's widow. Yeah...
Gwen knows seeing her first love again will be hard, but she'll face Callum knowing he can't hurt her anymore because her heart is already broken, first from Callum's own abandonment of her, and second, from Ian taking his own life and leaving her pregnant, alone and worried about the circumstances of Ian's death. Will she be able to take Callum's word that he won't leave again? Can she trust he'll protect her, her heart and her baby?
Operator is the kind of romantic suspense I like best - with action and suspense that weaves seamlessly with the relationship. Callum and Gwen are both so tortured, by circumstances and expectations of others. Callum was so used to his parents' disappointment that it completely colored his world and guided his behavior, even to the point of hurting Gwen when he left her. Thankfully the two of them had a love that eventually could not be denied. Though I don't normally like it when siblings have feelings for the same person, it was done well here, with sensitivity, and both brothers are likable characters. Though I haven't read all the previous installments of this series, it was easy to pick things back up here, and now I'm impatiently awaiting the next story in this wonderful series.
this book was amazing, I loved that Callum wanted to redeem himself to show he's changed and worthy towards Gwen. I did like Gwen character because she was described as a strong woman and independent but I was a bit annoyed by her. but I did loved the ending it was amazing something I was looking forward too.
This was a new author for me. Easy as a standalone, as it was Book 6 in the series but it felt like the start of a new storyline. The story was a bit more on the second chance, romance side and then the second half the suspense ramps up when strange things start happening and questions over husband's (Ian) death surface. A bit of a cliffhanger with the story (not the couple) as it will continue with the next book.
Two new narrators for me - very enjoyable narration.
Nicole Blanchard's First to Fight series has been addictive since book #1 Anchor. OPERATOR, book #8, was a fast paced, dramatic read with plenty of emotion and suspense that I sat riveted to the edge of my seat. Callum Reece has returned home to help with the family business after hearing his father has taken ill. Returning home means he'll come face to face with Gwen, his brother Ian's widow, and the woman he let go when he joined the Marines. Even though Gwen's heart had been broken, she felt a pull toward him, and she felt guilty, however she could not deny her feelings, and neither could Callum.
Danger lurks in the background though. Gwen has been suspicious about the circumstances regarding Ian's death and beings her own little investigation. A major event occurs (no spoilers here) and it brings Gwen and Callum closer together. Soon, she voices her opinions to him regarding her suspicions about Ian. Callum's suspicions are aroused when danger finds itself on Gwen's front door, now he goes into full protective mode - this man just loves showing his alpha side. Their relationship soon begins to move to another level. Gween brings out a side of Callum that he allows few others to see, he's tender, caring, domesticated, and his commitment to her is steadfast. It's evident that love is there, but are they willing to put the past behind them and try again?
OPERATOR is a second chance at love romance, it has plenty of passion and steamy scenes, twists and turns, and intrigue that had me guessing at the truth of Ian's death and who was involved and why? Suspense and mystery kept me thoroughly captivated, Nicole's words weaving their magical web. Although Callum and Gwen's story ends happily, there is a continuing story arc that will move onto Aviator, which is Dean's story.
Callum had loved Gwen before he ever went into the military. I hated that his parents, especially his mother made him feel like a second class citizen and always made his brother feel like he could do and be anything he wanted. I think this had a lot to do with why he thought he wasn’t good enough for Gwen and left her without a word. He forced himself to go back for his brother and Gwen’s wedding and didn't let on how much it killed him. Even though he was messed up some, he loved his brother and wanted what was best for his brother and Gwen.
Something happens to one of his best buddies while they are fighting over seas and tears their tight knit group apart. Then he hears his brother has taken his life. He couldn’t believe that his brother would do such a thing, and Gwen felt there was something else going on. I was glad Callum finally came back to help his parents with their diner and was there for Gwen. Unexplained instances start happening to Gwen and Callum is determined to get to the bottom of what is happening. This will keep you on the edge of your seat. There is a happily ever after, but the mystery is not solved and goes forward into the next book. It was an exciting story and I encourage you to read the book. I was given a copy and voluntarily wrote a review.
Gwen and Cal took my heart. They both had to move on from grief and their past hurts but also deal with the danger. The story is riveting and I love how the author showcases both their chemistry and emotions and balances out the suspense.
I first read this book in November of 2022, it was one of the first books by this author that I read but I enjoyed it so much that I started following her work. When I learned that Callum and Gwen's story was going to be available in audio format I couldn't wait to listen to it.
Callum and Gwen were lovers years ago, but they conducted their affair in secret for some reason. Gwen was totally in love with Callum aka Cal but when he joined the military as a Marine he left her behind without a backward glance. At first, Gwen expected to hear from him but she never did.
Cal was something of a black sheep in his family, his younger brother Ian was always the favourite son. When he first left he kept in touch with Ian but when he learned that Ian and Gwen were to marry it made him realise just what he had thrown away. He attended the wedding but after that contact between the brothers was sparse, Ian would message Cal but his messages and emails went unanswered. Cal didn't even return stateside to attend Ian's funeral when he died
But something happened within Cal's team, a trauma of sorts so he didn't sign on for a further term, he returned home to help his parents run their business. Cal knew he would have to face Gwen, but when he does he's shocked to discover that she's pregnant with Ian’s baby.
Gwen has never believed that her husband, Ian, killed himself and is looking into what happened, but then strange things start to happen, has she put herself in danger? Cal is determined to protect her but Gwen doesn’t want to let Cal back into her life or her heart. She'd trusted Ian to stay but he left, just as Cal did before him and she's never opening her heart again. But the time comes when she's forced to accept Cal's help and after that, there is no way he's backing off. He wants Gwen and the baby she carries and he's determined to prove to her that no matter what he's not leaving again!
Their old feelings may have resurfaced, and their chemistry is still as strong as ever but will Gwen risk her heart again?
The story is well-written and has a good mix of danger in the form of threats from an unknown source, many unexpected twists and turns as well as great chemistry, and a second chance for a future together. But be warned not all questions are answered in this book. We do find out about Ian's death but not why he had to die - there is a happy ending but.......
The narration of the book by Marina Barrett and Theo Sinclair is excellent, they do a great job of bringing all the characters to life and expressing all the emotions felt by them.
Operator First to Fight Series, Book 6 By: Nicole Blanchard Narrated by: Marina Barrett, Theo Sinclair
Nicole Blanchard continues to wow me with another amazing novel set in her “First to Fight” series, a second chance romance filled with mystery and suspense. Callum “Cal” Reece left the marines despite only wanting to be an operator, but it was time to move on and go home, which was difficult, because he will have to face the only woman he ever loved, the woman who married his late brother, Ian. Gwen Winston moved on when Cal left her for the marines. The two were never officially a couple, but they were quite fond of each other. Ian was nothing like his brother and they fell in love, making a life for themselves. That was until his tragic passing, one Gwen has suspicions about. She was mad at Cal for not coming home for his brother’s funeral. He is determined to make things right with her and her unborn baby, and when strange and unexplainable things happen around her house, he goes into protective mode and does some investigating. He turns out to be her rock, and I thought they were great together and for each other. There is never a dull moment in this book, and the story captivates your attention from start to end, keeps you thinking and on your toes. The writing, plot and world building are fantastic, as are the character growth and development. The story has the perfect balance of drama, a touch of angst, some mystery, twists and turns, thrilling and suspenseful moments, heartfelt emotions, and a wonderful second chance romance.Nicole Blanchard, thank you for another amazing story and emotional rollercoaster ride.
🎧📚🎧 Marina Barrett and Theo Sinclair did a fantastic job bringing the characters to life, humanizing them, giving each a voice that was fitting and was believable in every role. Sinclair aced it as Cal, showcasing his personality perfectly and Barrett was just as amazing as Gwen, both grasping every aspect of their character’s personality, and their every emotion and have you feeling them all. They make a terrific team, their voices complement each other, their pacing is great, and they set the perfect tone for the story. These entertaining storytellers are a pleasure to listen to and their performance elevates the already amazing story to another level. Thank you for another wonderful listen.
Operator First to Fight Series, Book 6 By: Nicole Blanchard Narrated by: Marina Barrett, Theo Sinclair
Always fantastic romantic suspense, Nicole Blanchard brings another couple to life. Meet Gwen and Callum. These two were together until Cal left for his mission. No question, his loyalty was to his country and to keep her whole, he knew it was best to make a clean cut. He never thought his brother, Ian would fall for her. The two were married only to have Ian die several years later. Now Cal is home for good, not only to help his aging parents, but to win Gwen's heart back. The two are a little awkward around each other, but as things evolve, their relationship does too. Their feelings never lost, the two quickly found each other, and now Cal wants nothing but forever. But Gwen holds a thought about Ian's death that could change everything. Is danger lurking? And what did Ian know to bring it home? This is the perfect mixture of broken characters with an incredible slow burn and the underlying danger that is lurking. I was mesmerized by this amazing story, with characters that are real, dealing with pain, guilt, grief, joy and love. Plus there is nothing better than bringing back characters from previous stories to make this a cohesive group, loyal to the core. It's fantastic as the others in the series and it should not be missed.
Theo Sinclair and Marina Barrett could not have been better story tellers for this one. Sinclair proves Cal to be the broken soldier, with all the feels as he heals. His alpha tendencies to protect come through and his voice with the baby is priceless. Barrett is incredible as Gwen. She is torn, full of grief, wanting love and to move on. All the emotions are packed in her voice creating magic. These two are fabulous and this is a must listen!
I was completely captivated by this suspenseful second chance romance! Callum and Gwen were young lovers when Callum left for the marines, vowing to not return, breaking Gwen's heart. Gwen eventually moved on, marrying Callum's brother, Ian. But her happiness was short lived with Ian's mysterious passing, leaving her once again with a broken heart. Month's later Callum finally returns home, to help his ailing father, and to win back the trust and love of the only woman who owns his heart. Gwen doesn't forgive easily. But the more time they spend together, her long buried feelings become harder to deny. Callum is determined to make sure she is taken care of, and safe, especially when mysterious events start happening. Gwen is sure that what happened to Ian wasn't as simple as they say. Callum gets in on her investigation, and the closer they get to the truth, the more danger they are in. This is a fast paced, suspenseful journey that kept me riveted from the very beginning. I loved the emotional push-pull between Callum and Gwen, making the sparks fly between them. They were so great together, challenging each other, and their chemistry was palpable! Marina Barrett and Theo Sinclair did a great job bringing this story to life. Their inflections, banter, and accents were perfect as they built the suspense and steam of this story. This is my first listen to both of these narrators and I loved both their voices and their performance, so I will definitely look for more of their work. There was a question that went unsolved, but I was still very happy with the ending. I loved this emotional, riveting and steamy story and can't wait for more in the First to Fight series.
I have read all of the books so far in this series and I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised because this one was actually "more" complete than the others, but not entirely! It is still kind of on a cliff hanger, which I don't like. Also a couple of errors as well. The original premise of Cal and Gwen was not in the beginning welcoming to me. So I recommend you give it a chance. You will change your mind as I did.
Let's see, you have an older brother in the military with a girl who wants him to return...he doesn't, tragedy strikes his team, she marries his military younger brother and is pregnant. His brother dies and his distracting widow does not believe the whys of it all! Danger now lurks. Cal will now have to open his past to try to figure things out.
Thankfully, this time the author put the epilogue in the book instead of referencing it and it being MIA! Though, it was still lacking. I will finish the entire series, but don't think I will read anything more by the author. It is truly unfortunate because the plots have so much potential as do the main and sub characters. It's the endings that just can't bring the readers a complete closure of the current story. It feels disjointed to me. These stories are not free or $0.99, so I feel, we the readers who purchase and become vested in these stories deserve more as do these characters that are great.
Operator, an Audiobook by Nicole Blanchard is the story of Callum and Gwen. This taut, thrilling, forbidden romance will keep you thoroughly invested!!! He left her. She carried on her life. Now, her husband is gone and she is determined to find out what happened to him. She never anticipated the return of Callum…
I freaking loved everything about this story!!! The bizarre history between them, her current situation, the feelings that never ended. Plus, the truth about her husband’s demise…an excellent story!
This Audiobook was beautifully narrated by Marina Barrett and Theo Sinclair. They easily captured the essence of the story and the unique emotions between these two characters. The heart-pounding suspense never falters in their performances!
I actually really liked this book, and it’s interesting because I’ve read similar stories that haven’t sat well with me, but I was actually quite happy with the way that Cal and Gwen’s stories developed. I also felt a really deep prospect for Cal’s brother and I think that that’s what differentiates this book from others that have attempted to be similar. Additionally you really start to see the team aspect from this book with the addition of Ford and that for me was really quite heartwarming. The main storyline of this book and the underlying storyline of the series are interconnected and I found myself getting sucked in way deeper.
This is the sixth book in the First to Fight series, a Romantic Suspense. This is a standalone romance, within an interconnected series. Callum and Gwen's story is entertaining, and emotional. They are both interesting characters. Callum is handsome, and protective. Gwen is beautiful, strong, and smart. The story is filled with mystery, secrets, angst, danger, suspense, and twists and turns. The world building is captivating. This is a great second chance romance. Marina Barrett and Theo Sinclair did an excellent job bringing these characters, and this story to life. I enjoyed it.
This is an audiobook review. You can experience a dual pov, second chance romance with mystery and suspense. Callum had always loved her. He broke her heart leaving for the military. Gwen moved on with his brother Ian until he passed away a year ago. Callum has avoided coming home because he still loved Gwen and knew he wouldn’t be able to control his impulses. The time has come for him to come home and help out with the family business. He comes home to find Gwen pregnant. Gwen doesn’t believe Ian commited suicide.
Unsolved mystery!! Nicole Blanchard is a new-to-me author who drew me in to Callum and Gwen’s second chance at love storyline. Although there were a few daunting obstacles for them to overcome, they were both forthcoming and honest with each other which helped to solidify their relationship. Even though the mystery of Ian’s death is unsolved, there is resolution to their relationship restarting and forging a future together! Marina Barrett and Theo Sinclair are both new narrators to me and did a good job with their performances. I look forward to more of this series.
Callum always had feelings for Gwen, but his late brother married her first, making her off-limits. As a Marine Operator, Callum is accustomed to putting his life on the line. However, when danger finds its way to Gwen’s door, he can’t stay away. The circumstances surrounding his brother’s death become increasingly suspicious, and Callum is determined to uncover the truth, all while protecting the woman he’s always loved.
An amazing second chance at romance with some mystery and suspense. It will suck you in from the beginning as it takes you through emotional ride and its twists and turns. I enjoyed Callum and Gwen’s journey as they overcome obstacles and things start to unravel. I loved their connection, the banter and flying sparks. It’s a well written story. Excellent narration by Marina Barrett and Theo Sinclair. They bring the characters to life.
These two have a lot of history and even though he walked away thinking it was best for her and she sort of moved on, that history was still there waiting to be brought up to the present This time there's three in the mix and a questionable suicide to look in to. Interesting storyline.
Why is it so hard for people to a book any more? There were multiple sentences that had extra words in them. Is it so hard to have someone read it one last time after it’s formatted? Anyway, the story was good but sad. All the characters were depressed, which got a little tedious. I’m not sure I need to read the next book.
Just read Operator and it was a pretty good book, as was the series What I didn’t like is the endings of them, especially this one. I really don’t want to keep going to websites and download this or that, or join an email list. I would have read the books even if there was a “normal” ending. Otherwise, I enjoyed the series.
I love Cal and Gwen's relationship. How cool and patient he is. Plus, little Violet gave me baby fever -- that cute! Reading the next book is a must, as the plot does not resolve here. Very enjoyable read, though
Talk about emotional. The dark sheep of the family, small town, brothers widow, suicide or not, brothers baby, romance with drama. A well written story, I will be back tracking to read the rest of the series
I liked Cal, this was a nice story of one woman and the two brothers who loved her. A story of survivors guilt, mystery with the complication of a pregnancy. A nice afternoon read.
Ms. Blanchard draws you in from the beginning of this story of second chances and keeps you captivated until the very end. Loved the narration by Marina Barrett and Theo Sinclair. Recommended read.
This was such an emotional and intense story. The past memories, the present emotions and the future hope. This was full of secrets, hidden truths, grief, hope, love, passion and mystery. The team might have to get back together to find the truth and uncover just what happened.
A very good and well written second chance romance. I enjoyed the relationship between the two love interests and it felt like they genuinely deserved to be together. It was a nice book to read
I have missed this series so much. These marines that Ms. Blanchard write about just embed themselves in my heart. I never seem to get enough. Callum was definitely not the exception. My heart ached for him from the very beginning. He supposedly had a hard life with his family (though they never really get into why) and did what he thought was the right thing to do. He left the girl he loved so a better man could love her and give her more than he thought he was capable of. That better man just happened to end up being his brother, the golden child, the one who couldn't seem to do any wrong. And the one who, unfortunately, died before he should have. Now it's time to grieve. Now it's time to claim what was always his, Gwen's love for him.
I truly loved these two. Though I think I loved Callum more. He had a heart of gold under his hard exterior and was always trying to do what he thought was right, even if it wasn't. Gwen was kind, strong, loving, and a great mom. But she was also judgemental and didn't seem to think that Callum meant the things that he said, that he could change. I think the biggest issue I had with her is that she could jump from one brother to the other without a thought. Yeah I understood Callum hurt her, but still.
There are so many emotions in this story. Some good emotions, some not so good. There was also a bit of angst and some unanswered questions yet to come. But it was also a story full of love and hope. Hope for a second chance at love and life. I couldn't be happier with what I read.

This book held me captive from the first chapter until the end. My heart broke for a pregnant Gwen after the suicide of her husband Ian. And for Callum ... his parents clearly favored his younger brother Ian, while Callum did nothing right in their eyes. This book had me laughing, crying, on the edge of my seat, and saying WTF! Then there were the steamy scenes ... WOW! The only problem is I don't remember anything from the first book in the series as it has been over 3 years and with that much time between the two books, I wish the author would have re-capped the first book more at the beginning of this book. I also found the timeline a little wonky ... six months ... a year?
Callum comes home after his parent's request of help months after his brother's death. He finds his first love Gwen pregnant with his brother's child. Gwen can never forgive Callum for leaving her all those years ago even though she found a different kind of love with his younger brother. But Gwen needs Callum's help to find the truth of her husband's death because she believes there's no way Ian committed suicide ... he was way too excited to become a father. Will Callum and Gwen be able to survive the intense chemistry they sill have?
