Sophie Feegle needs a break. Rent is due on her crappy apartment and she's halfway through her last loaf of bread.
Sophie doesn't have big ambitions. She only wants a job that will keep her landlord off her back, enough extra cash for whiskey at the neighborhood bar and a bit of free time to hang out with the naughty old lady next door.
When a chance encounter with a quiet stranger leads to a job offer at the San Francisco City Morgue, Sophie jumps at the opportunity. She never expected to find her calling on the graveyard shift surrounded by dead bodies and the strange characters that make up the morgue's staff. Finding out that your friends and co-workers are shifters, ogres and other non-human creatures is a shock, but Sophie quickly realizes that these are her people, and she has finally found her perfect gig.
And then things get odd. Well… odder.
Follow Sophie and the Odd Ones as they solve murders and uncover secrets that lead them to the other side of the world... and beyond.
Gwen DeMarco is an avid reader, wine & coffee drinker, gardener and a lover of all things nerdy. Gwen loves to write paranormal romance novels with a focus on the weird and wonderful. She loves to write a good snarky heroine and a grumpy male lead. Sophie and the Odd Ones is her first foray into the world of shifters, fae, ogres and vampires.
Gwen is happily married to her high school sweetheart and has two teenage children. She can often be found with her nose in a book and a glass of wine or mug of coffee in her hand.
What a fun listen. Each book builds on the next but the stories are fun and interesting enough. My 10 year old listened to just a few minutes of book one and was intrigued with the story. Every day after school she asked for updates on the book. I loved how unique the book felt. It had heavy moments, broken up with wit and snark. I love a lead character with snark because I can relate. You can’t help fall in love with these characters and not just the main ones. The entire group of odd ones are unique but lovable. I enjoyed that the story line was one I could share with my daughter in edited versions and increased her love for reading. I wouldn’t let her listen to it but the joy of sharing a paranormal love was so fun. I could have spent a lot more time in this world. The narration was delightful especially with the wide range of accents and characters with distinct vibes to work through. Highly recommend. I also think this would be a great YA set for those who want to dive into paranormal.
The series is well written and decent on audible if you speed it up. Its way to long and written like mini novels so every second is addressed that it becomes boring and redundant. If the books get cut down and removes unnecessary parts it would be a much better series.
This series has a great cast of characters. Each book takes up after the prior book. While there are no glaring cliff hangers after each book, there is an overarching plotline that does not resolve until book 5. The plot is very interesting! It starts with a human woman (Sophie) who is down on her luck, but due to an act of kindness, gets a job as a coroner's assistant. There she learns she has an unusual gift. When she touches a corpse she can see how that person died. As most of the corpses her boss autopsies are mythical people such as wolf shifters and vampires, the deaths are mainly murder. Thus starts her career of helping a mythical detective investigate murders. And she gets the whole autopsy team (her odd ones) involved. Most of the books involve solving a murder. But slowly the overarching plotline is weaved in. Sophie discovers she is less than a person. She has "sisters" who used to be part of her. And their lives are in jeopardy again. So are the lives of all her odd ones. Book 5 had an absolutely awesome ending!!! I loved it. Great series.
This whole series is absolutely engrossing, every book drawing the reader in more and more as we follow Sophie's fascinating story - culminating in an incredible story's end with the final book. These stories hold many surprises, so much story and character development - it is impossible to tear yourself away. I would be splilling massive spoilers to say more! Excellent urban fantasy ranging from San Francisco to Ireland. The narration, by Janine Granda, captures the stories wonderfully. I highly recommend this set!
Just as enjoyable as I remembered. Love the first and fifth books, with book two coming in third. Sophie is such a fun snarky character to follow. I found her relationship with the elderly (but don’t call her that) Birdie very sweet, and she is very much a grounding influence for the floundering Sophie. Plus when Sophie is introduced to Reggie, little does she know, or could she even imagine, how much her life would change.
A great series. Snarky, sassy characters. What more do you need?
An entertaining series with good characters and a changing story line that keeps interest from start to the epilogue in book 5. Recommended for fans of the genre.
This series had me interested from beginning to end. I couldn’t put it down. I tried to make it last longer by reading at night before bed but it didn’t seem to work. Hope to rad more of DeMarcos stories. Book was totally amazing!!
