@theseguinbean: Joel Hays is a dirty rotten tweet thief.

Tristan:
Graduation is coming up, I still haven’t squared away an internship, and now this. Joel Hays has been stealing my one-liners and spinning them into posts for the Watering Hole, the bar he owns with his best friend.

This thievery will not stand.

Just because he’s hot as fire doesn’t mean I’m gonna let him get away with it. I’ve half a mind to make my way next door and give that tattooed, bearded charmer a piece of my mind.

@thewateringhole: I plead the fifth.

Joel:
Tristan works next door at the Seguin Bean, and man, do I have it bad for that adorable barista. Hoping to catch his eye, I’ve been stealing his sassy little quips for a month now, but he’s been too busy to notice.

Sure, there are more mature ways to get a hold of a beautiful man’s attention, but this was way more fun.

Oh, look. Here he comes now.

The Thief is the prequel to Lost Boys, a small-town series set in Central Texas that's about friends, family, and coming home.

Cute. Kinda insta-love but whatever. This was my first Kelly Fox book and I'm really excited to continue with this series!

(did I consider adding a whole star just for this cover - absolutely 🔥🔥)

This is the first book in the series and acts as a prologue, which is unfortunately very clear. We're introduced to a bunch of characters in rapid succession and then suddenly the two MMCs are banging in the office.

The writing is not necessarily to my personal taste. When you read a spicy scene, do you want it to include “Where’s your gag reflex, lover?” and “Hello, big boy.”? If you do, you'll probably eat this up, because most of the book is just sex. The first 26 pages are introducing the plot. From that point on, 20 of the next 50 pages are just sex, and then the book is over.

tags/tropes: age gap (one MMC about to graduate college), instalove/instalust, coffeeshop, bar, relationship seemingly based around how much sex can be had instead of romance, speedrunning a relationship (moving in together very quickly)

3.75 stars. Great intro to a new series.

Joel is a hot tattooed bar owner flirting up a storm with Tristan the adorable barista at the coffee shop next door. Unfortunately Tristan is unaware that Joel is actually flirting with him via social media and thinks he’s just stealing his ideas. Theirs is a “fast but meaningful” connection involving plenty of steam and leads to a delightful HEA.
I giggled, laughed and smiled throughout this quick and easy read which is a great prequel to the Lost Boys series and intro to it’s very interesting characters.

Cute. Guaranteed four stars for the Fifth Element reference alone, though I feel like it was taken too far to ensure folks picked up on it. The end made me smile for sure and a bunch of potentially interesting characters were introduced for the series. I have to admit that the chemistry between Joel and Tristan didn't do much for me. There wasn't much on the page beyond "he's hot, let's bone" but I also get that it was a short piece and there are limits. So.. I'm sort of torn on how I feel about that.

This is a quick, fun and a pretty pleasant novella. Low on the drama and angst and a good way to set up this series (Lost Boys). Bar owner Joel has been pursuing barista Tristan for sometime, through Tristan’s social media posts. Tristan just doesn’t know it … until he confronts Joel about stealing all his social media ideas.

What I liked about this one was there was no game playing, hidden agendas or secrets. These two were out, and wanting to be in a committed relationship.

A great platform for the rest of the series with some glimpses of upcoming storylines.

To borrow a phrase from this novella, you won’t want to miss this “quick but meaningful” introduction to Fox’s next series. Most novellas that act as this sort of prelude leave me both overwhelmed by introductions to secondary characters and underwhelmed by the story itself. Proving once again why Fox is one of my favorite writers, this story is none of those things.

Even stories set in the “real” world still need elements of worldbuilding to introduce the reader to the setting. Fox takes that one step further by using Tristan’s personal history with the town of Seguin to reveal both how the town is evolving and the all-important “vibe” of the setting itself. Tristan becomes a sort of stand-in for the reader as, with him, we’re introduced to the core group of characters we’ll see in future books and get hints of the backstory leading to how they became the Lost Boys.

None of this drowns out the story at the core of this novella, which still works as a lovely stand-alone romance in its own right. Tristan and Joel’s story involves all the humor and steam I’ve come to expect from this author without sacrificing any of the solid emotions necessary for any romance. The way Joel and Tristan first clash is essentially the equivalent of pulling pigtails for attention, which could have led to annoyingly immature conflict between adults. This is where Fox’s excellent character work shines, as she instead brings the men together in a high-heat romance that still has a solid “how to make the relationship work in the long-term” throughline – and intersects nicely with potential external stories we might see in the main series.

I was already excited for these next books by Fox. Getting more glimpses of Tristan and Joel being adorable together will simply be an added bonus.

Ahem…

Homies, I need you to brace yourselves.

*standing ovation commences*

I’d like to give the loudest shout out to the new editing team. Y’all the real MVPs. If my humans weren’t sleeping, I’d be hysterically screaming “F I N A L L Y” as I danced around my house. I never thought I’d get to read anything by this author that wasn’t inconsistent, lacking in continuity, or a grammatical mess, but y’all came through and changed the name of the game.

I can’t even properly articulate just how much I love this for the author—mostly for me, but I can’t imagine having my work butchered and having to pay for the displeasure. With stories this fantastic, they deserve to be treated like royalty.

This one was hilarious. It was sweet, a perfect set up for the coming series, intense even though it was short, the perfect amount of spicy, and an instalove vibe done right, complete with all of the fluff and sass you could ever want/need.

And I got to enjoy every single second of it. I seriously couldn’t be more hyped up for this new branch of this universe to develop. Congratulations to everyone involved.

4.95/5, if someone can tell me when he came out from behind the bar before the first office scene, the rating will be a perfect score. That’s the only thing that I honed in on that needed some clarification. It drives my poor brain in the wrong direction. Have some pity for my smoothness, okay?😩😂

"Lovesick goobers."

I finally bucked down and started Kelly Fox's the Lost Boys series. I started with the prequel novella, The Thief.

Honestly, what's cuter than a social media flirt campaign?

Joel, the hottie bartender, has it bad for the barista next door, Tristan. Tristan's love lies in social media and politics, so Joel starts a month long campaign of flirting over social media to get his attention.

It totally works.

This story does a great job of setting up the series. What we're looking at:

❤️ found family
❤️ small town Texas
❤️ being queer in a small town
❤️ an aging and possibly ill father-type figure
❤️ a ton of Lost Boy characters that will find their own HEAs as the series goes on

Everything will come together in classic Kelly Fox style, which means HUMOR and ROMANCE and plenty of STEAM.

I enjoyed Tristan and Joel's "lesbian-speed" romance. I loved how into each other they both were. Both mc's were engaging, and I really look forward to starting The Skeptic. Probably tomorrow!

***
It's taken me a while to start this series because I love Kelly Fox, and I was hoping to be able to read the books back to back to back. Her books are like my favorite snack, I always want more.

When Tristan realizes that Joel has been stealing his words to use in his social media for his bar, it sets them on a path toward love.

“Tristan Silver was temptation personified, and I’d been flirting with him through social media for a solid month now.”

‘“Tell ’im hi for me,” I said, patting Oz’s shoulder, guy-speak for Get the f— out of my bar so I can get my flirt on.”

This is a fun novella. Tristan and Joel have great chemistry, and I like how their battle of tweets starts each chapter. It’s a novella, so things progress pretty quickly, and at the same time, despite the short page count, time is allowed to pass, so that we can see their relationship grow a bit. Fox makes no bones that this is a starter for a new series, so some page space is given over to introducing the cast of characters and setting up some dynamics and conflicts. It’s done well, with Tristan and Joel participating, so that it doesn’t feel as if those parts are taking up time that should be spent on their romance. Still, I do wish we had had more time with Tristan and Joel. They are fun characters, and I would have liked to get to know them better.

Review - The thief by Kelly Fox

5 ☕️

This month is really hitting me with great novellas and this one really hit the spot. I’m a sucker for Kelly’s writing as I know I'll always be left with a smile on my face and this was no exception. This is a great introduction to Kelly’s new series The Lost Boys. This has me all excited to find out more about the lost boys. I really enjoyed meeting Joel's friends and seeing who we may potentially find out more about. Joel and Tristan are just a perfect example of how quickly Kelly can get me to fall in love. Yes their story is short and sweet but it is still believable, sweet, fun and extremely cute in places. What starts as a school boy poking the bear to flirt vibes ends in two amazing men falling in love with each other and the epilogue….. perfection .

This story is the perfect introduction to Kelly Fox’s next series. It’s a quick, flirty, steamy read between Joel, the hot, tattooed bartender and Tristan, the sexy barista next door. Their social media war of words finally comes to a head when Tristan realizes, with a little help from his boss, that Joel is stealing his words as a way of flirting. When he goes to confront him in person the speaks really fly between the two men. If they can ever find the time to get together that is, what with Tristan finishing up his graduation requirements & looking for an internship that would take him away from Seguin and Joel tending his bar plus trying to keep his friend Beckett from losing his meetinghouse. I am looking forward to the stories about the other “Lost Boys” in Seguin and maybe even even check in with Joel and Tyler after their HEA.

Fox has done it again. She’s created a new world of characters that are intriguing, charismatic and all kinds of fun to read.

Although a side character in this novella, Beckett, has appeared in the Wild Heart Ranch series, the main characters in this one are brand new. Tristan and Joel begin communicating by way of the world’s cutest social media war between the coffee house Tristan works at and the bar Joel co-owns. Social media posts occur throughout the novella, adding cohesion and humor.

I adored (as usual) Fox’s created found family and can’t wait for the first full-length book in the series. The premise is a shop-teacher that brought a bunch of queer kids together in a conservative (but evolving) Texas town and I am here for it.

Five stars.

The Thief is a fun start to a new Kelly Fox series and I can’t wait to see what's in store for the
New journey she’s going to bring us on in the new Lost Boys Series. Joel has had an interest in the unaware Tristan for a while, and as any grown man would, he tries to get his attention like an elementary school kid by antagonizing him thru a tweet war. It does the trick when Tristan finally confronts him about the situation and Joel finally makes his move to make Tristan his.
This was a sweet but hot quick read that introduces us to the upcoming players in the new series. I loved the chemistry between Joel and Tristan, as I always do between Kelly Fox Characters and can’t wait to see what comes next with the other members of the Lost Boy’s Club.

short and cute

A quick preview for this new series of the lost boys in a lovely picturesque town called Sequin. Tristan is a social media expert and works part time as a barista while finishing college, he posts for the coffee shop on a regular basis. Joel is a slightly older tattooed guy who owns the bar next to the coffee shop and has a thing for Tristan. It isn’t until it’s pointed out to Tristan that Joel is rephrasing his words on posts that he confronts Joel. There is chemistry between them and what starts as a slow burn turns into more as time goes on. They are perfect for each other and are ready to go the distance. We meet a few of the other lost boys and quirky local characters that we will get to see in future books. Good start to the series.

This is not a drill!! It’s a new series and I am so so excited. Kelly fox has a style to get writing that is just so good. I have fallen in love with each of her created worlds and I have a feeling the same will happen with the lost boys!

Tristan and Joel were sweet together and for sure insta connection shmoopy no angst novella material. I definitely missed the emotional depth I’ve come to love from Kelly but I do think this did its job. The crew of lost boys all have something special and something that enticed me to want to know more!

Beyond excited to see where this new series takes us!

A fun novella by one of my favorite authors with all the sweetness and heat you'd expect from her work but with no morally ambiguous main characters (notice I said *main*). This prequel to the upcoming Lost Boys series does a great job of setting the stage without being too obvious about it.

Because it's a novella, there's instalust and instalove, though in this case it feels really instant in both cases. That's my one minor criticism. The writing is top-notch, the characters are engaging, and the story does its job of making me curious about what's to come while still making me cheer for Joel and Tristan.

And I am curious, and eager to see what happens next!

Great set-up for this new series! I love this author's writing style, humor, and sarcasm - the spice & butt-kicking are good too. In this particular story, I loved the town/character intros, getting to know more about Beckett, MC1 in the first novel, and seeing how townies band together, the joys & pitfalls both of small-town life. Tristan & Joel started out a bit rocky but once they got rolling for real, - well, I'll let you read & discover that for yourselves. Enjoy this short & sweet intro to Seguin, Tx, and the Lost Boys

This is a fun, flirty, low-angst book that introduces the Lost Boys characters. This novella focuses on the relationship between Tristan, a barista who is good with social media campaigns while preparing to graduate from college, and his business neighbor, Joel, a bartender who wants to gets Tristan's attention by poking fun at him on social media.

As the two come together, at first sparks fly, but then the mutual attraction takes off. There is plenty of flirty talk, passionate encounters, and a beautiful love. I look forward to reading the rest of this series!

A quick setup

An interesting setup novella. The two characters at the core start off a bit antagonistic, but it is literally a pulling pigtails to get noticed thing, and that is defined very early on. The romance is fast and heated and meeting the characters of the town is enjoyable. It is clear who these stories will be about, and there are hurdles for both the town and the people to overcome. Though this romance was quick it could be interesting to see what the future books bring.

This is a short introduction novella to the Lost Boys series. It sets up the series nicely by introducing the Lost Boys and explaining how they come to be while still remaining focussed on our two MMC's (who are not technically Lost Boys, but adjacent).

While this wasn't very in depth, it does read as a cozy, "neighbor" to lover, hilarious social media flirting, great and spicy novella. If you need something that is zero angst, quick to read and makes you happy, this is it.

It didn't reinvent the wheel but it is very much a cozy, happy-feely book.

So cute

Okay. This was great. Joel and Tristan are so much fun together. There is a lot going on in this short read, but it is a great start to a new series. I love how well Tristan and Joel get along and complement each other. The guys have goods times, sweet times, funny times, and working hard to do what is right.

I can't wait to read the next story so we get to see Beckett and everyone else again.

The Thief is a fun and light hearted romp that has a classic scheme of using reverse psychology to achieve what you want. Joel and Tristan are no different. Their social media rivalry was an adorable meet cute. It also provided a wonderful preview to looks to be an excellent series that will combine found family, reforming a home town and of course falling in love.
If this story is a prediction of what’s to come there will be fun, laughter and steam to boot.

Good. But very rushed. I understand that it is an introduction to the new series and it was supposed to be short. But at certain moments I was lost in the chronology of time in history. Other than that, it was very good.

Romance MM. Small town in Texas. Homophobic citizens. School friends reunited. Zero anguish. Lots of headbutting. Passion from 0 to 10 in the blink of an eyelash. Zero suspense. Zero action.

Lots of fun

This prequel to the new Lost Boys series is a super sweet short with a line from one of the MCs that's perhaps my new favourite trope description: it's not insta it's "fast but meaningful" ...genius! Joel and Tristan are pretty adorable and scorching hot together and I hope we're treated to more page time with them as the series proper develops. It's a fun four stars from me for The Thief.

Le sigh. A quick read, in a new town in TX, loosely linked to her other TX series. This one is short, and full of delightful snark, banter and sexy times. I can’t wait to immerse myself in this world.

The barista and the bar owner/manager next door hook up and rapidly fall into lust and then love. There is an age gap, lots of snark, lots of humor and such deep affection for this found family. It made me all verklempt.

Tweet me

“Tristan Silver was temptation personified, and I’d been flirting with him through social media for a solid month now.” I laughed out loud at Joel and Tristan’s tweet war as it was ridiculously fun and sweet, as are they. And meeting all of who’s to come only has me wanting more. Ahhh, I’m so ready for the Lost Boys!
