The Elevator #1

The Elevator

Rate this book
An ordinary elevator. An ordinary morning.

Matt steps into the elevator, wanting only to reach his workspace, and coffee, on the Sixth Floor. Three more people enter and the elevator ascends. Another dreary day in the office, they think. Until the door slides open…

What greets Matt drives all thoughts of coffee from his mind, for he isn’t faced with the drab office he is expecting, but a sun-drenched land of exotic scents. And danger.

Thus begins a day of journeying to wondrous places containing deadly perils. A day that will change the lives of all four travellers, especially Matt’s. A day he will never forget, no matter how much he’d like to.

Sam Kates

My name is Sam Kates, at least when it comes to writing fiction. If there’s a photo on this page of a middle-aged bloke with a hair shortage, that’s me.

I live in Wales, a small constituent country of Great Britain and the U.K. Like many of my fellow countrymen, I possess a fondness for rugby union (though these days only as a spectator) and a good pint of beer. Usually the two go hand in hand.

My tastes in reading and film tend toward the darker side of life and the fantastic. Little surprise, then, that the fiction I write is usually science fiction and fantasy with a decidedly dark flavour, or outright horror.

Outside of writing, my main ambition is to see Wales beat the New Zealand All Blacks to win the Rugby World Cup. A forlorn hope, I suspect, but if you're going to harbour ambitions, they might as well be lofty, right?

This was a weird sci-fi read (not my usual genre) that nonetheless kept me glued to the pages until the end. Hmmm ...... maybe we should heed it's warning ⚠️ and NOT step into an elevator (Lift! Lift! It's a bloody lift!) during an electrical storm. The next book in this trilogy has already made it onto my TBR mountain.

Matt is somewhat hung-over and longing to reach his floor in the building where he works, just so he can sink a coffee. Three other people enter the lift with him, people he doesn’t know, and the lift goes up to the top floor, the sixth. This is where their nightmare begins. The doors open onto a different world. We follow their experiences which form a wonderful, classic set of sci-fi scenes.

This novella is long enough to get to grips with the different scenarios but quickly establishes the fearful, apparently inescapable predicament they find themselves in. It makes you want to take the stairs in future. An excellent read.
