The series is so inconsistent it's not even funny. You can't even call it plot twists because it just jumps from one idea to the next - it reads like this was the first and only draft. The grammar is just terrible in places. I literally had to skip read the majority of this book just to see if it got better - Turns out it got worse (if that's even possible) I waited patiently for this whole series to come out before I read it and was severely disappointed
Oh boy. Okay, so let me start by saying I love Kerry Taylor. I’ve enjoyed all her books, some more than others, but overall, I have always considered her a really solid storyteller! I also really enjoyed the first two books in the “Visions of Evil” series. I liked the FMC and really liked all the guys in her harem, or Quin, as they are named in the books. That being said, Fighting Evil was a really really really disappointing read. An extremely underwhelming conclusion to what could’ve been a really epic trilogy.
THOUGHTS/SPOILERS
There were many things wrong with this book, but I think they all could’ve been solved if Taylor had given us one or two more books in this series. Most of the problems with this book were because the book was just too short to “deal with them.” We have Lana falling into a deep depression unable to master her powers for almost the entire book but suddenly after a visit from her dead mother, boom, she is like the superwoman of Vis Powers and able to channel all of them with ease. Noah is being swung back and forth between his own incomplete Quin and his sister Lana and his devotion to her. We see him get acquainted with him like him a lot, and then he’s gone from the storyline only to be dropped back in randomly. The evil Venerators keep showing up, being fought off, only to elude to a big epic battle. But we only get that epic battle in like two pages at the end…and it’s really not all that epic! There is so much emotional baggage that needs to be unpacked and dealt with and so much going on but suddenly, just like that, the books over. The twins have defeated the Venerators, the plot twist with evil dad and traitor wife is barely two paragraphs and then tossed aside like it was nothing. And we’re left with a REALLY rather pathetic epilogue. Frankly I’d like to have seen the epilogue include Lana and her Quin having some kids, or at least having her pregnant. A flash to three years later and they’re just la-Dee-da living normal lives now, and then last page BIG SURPRISE from Lana’s Quin…they bought her a dog. Uhhhh, what?!!! That’s our epilogue? After three books, and what was supposed to be a world ending battle we get an epilogue that flashes three years into the future with them all leading really boring lives, and buying her a dog? I’m very sad to say that this book was extremely lackluster, not Taylor’s finest by far, and a really disappointing conclusion to what started off as a great series.
I have had a hard time with Lena. Yes, she had a horrific childhood. Yes, she has legit trauma and triggers. But she needs to see a therapist. Her lack of professional help is causing her relationships to take on that role. Because of this, it feel like she might as well be an energy vampire. She seems like she can suck the energy out of everyone and everything. It's not fair nor reasonable to expect her mates and their relationship to take on the role of a mental health professional.
But what really ruined the book/series is when the group finally meets up with the big bad. Lena is kicking the big bad's ass and could kill them. Instead of just killing them and ending the entire problem. She asks her lovers and brother if she should kill them. Their response is No, don't take on that guilt. WHAT THE FUCK?!?! Why would she feel guilty about taking out someone that committed genocide, killed her family, and is trying to kidnap her and her brother. Lena's lover who said No don't kill the big bad was all about killing someone else he thought had something to do with the VIS community deaths. In fact, if her lover didn't want her to kill the big bad why didn't he do it. What makes this even more ridiculous is that Lena has killed several of the bad guys throughout the series. I can't begin to describe how absolutely ridiculous this is and how much it vexed me.
There are lot of inconsistencies throughout the book/series. For example, in one part Noah (h's brother) drives some people to get away from the bad guys. Then a couple chapters later, people are again fleeing the bad guys and drive for a long time. The author makes a note that the people have to take long turns since Noah doesn't know how to drive. There are lots of little things like that.
I love Taylor’s books honestly. I’ve read a lot of them and loved them. This series however like others have said it fell a bit short in the third book. A few other things like in the second book Lana and West had taken the next step and been totally intimate but then in the third book suddenly she was a virgin again and lost it with Gio? There was also a scene where she had said she woke up in one of Wests oversized tshirts and panties and then her and Malik were becoming intimate and he was pulling down the straps of her cami she was wearing?! She was wearing a t shirt not a cami? Little things like that really bother me with books.
Fighting Evil is the conclusion of Lana’s story and sees her learning how to use and control her powers and going up against the Venator. This book was a great conclusion to the series, tying up loose ends and keeping me hooked all the way through. I loved the characters in this book, they were all loveable and I loved how much love there was between Lana and her guys. I was surprised and shocked at the twist in the book which just added to the story. Overall, this was a brilliant conclusion to the series and I would recommend giving it a read.
This series is confounding. I liked it but there was so much wrong with it. There were so many contradictions e.g. Lana has sex with West in book2 but then it mentions her having sex for the FIRST TIME with Gio in book3!!! One page Lana is wearing underwear and West's t-shirt, the next she's in sleep shorts and a cami. There's a LOT of repetition sooooooo many spelling errors. Saying all that, I still read it all and still liked the characters. I'm honestly so confused right now.
Book was doing great up until the last few chapters where out of no where a bunch of typos and grammar errors started popping up. Kind of a rushed ending, not a huge fan of Grace being a traitor either.
