This is book two of the Fire Witches of Salem and the main characters are sisters Ash and Ember Holland, as well as the demon Prince of Hell, Chaos, who she exorcised and is responsible for the veil between worlds is being ripped apart. To break the curse upon the sister’s coven, they need to summon Chaos’ two brothers, or Ash will become a murderer and kill all in her coven as a result of the curse. Ash and Ember are both fire witches from a very powerful line, the only two left in Salem, and Ash is also an Ink Master, which is how she ended up with Chaos’ sigil on her arm! They can’t tell anyone else in their coven, Shade, Miles, or Ginger, who Chaos is and have to pretend he is a distant relative or friend of the family, and shroud his demon essence. They have to fight against lots of different demonic creatures and beings that have come through all the holes in the veil. Chaos has promised to help her family and break the curse, swearing he won’t hurt any of her family if she releases him. He wants to free Mayhem and follow the map she has to his skull, but he has to stay his hand as he realises how fragile the sister’s human bodies are, as they need to rest and recover from fighting creatures coming through the veil. Ash and Ember stole a page from a book in the Boston Magic Society witches coven library, as well as three cards, all about their family and the curse one of their past members placed upon their family. The Boston witches practice black magic, whilst Ash and Ember are white witches. The rest of their coven have no idea what they have done, but have some sense that the sisters are hiding something from them. Chaos can still influence Ash through the sigil on her arm, but he finds his magic is reversed which is a surprise to him. He has a lot to learn about the modern woman and what she likes and doesn’t like, especially when he uses his magic to calm her down, thinking he is helping!
They eventually manage to get out to the site of Mayhem’s skull, only for Ash to feel something is off, but Chaos is too impatient to be reunited with his brother and rushes in, setting off a trap. Someone had clearly gotten there a few days before them and taken the skull. Going to the next point on the map, based on a pentagram, sees them find someone has beat them to it again, but some others from probably the same group arrive just after them, clearly wanting the same prize as them! Ash, Ember and Chaos return home to recover, with Ash finally unable to ignore her draw to Chaos and they finally have sex, only to be disturbed once finished by an unwelcome guest, not her sister as first thought. It seems there is more than one of their own coven who has been dabbling in the dark arts, not just the one they found killed in some sort of dark ritual in a graphic manner! Now Ash, Ember and Chaos have more than one foe to face down and defeat, but even they don’t know the full extent of who is behind the actions in their coven and if they are linked to the Boston witches. They chase after one member, to keep them quiet about what they have realised about Chaos’ identity, but that just draws them into more danger and finding out who exactly is behind it, from within their very own coven! A shocking discovery and someone who has been hiding their magical powers from them all. They have already got Mayhem and now they will try and kill Chaos and the rest of the coven! If Ash and Ember can get out of this one, they will have a lot of explaining to do and a dark witch to catch! An interesting mix of witches and demons, with interactions that shouldn’t happen, but do, with betrayal and possession confusing the real truth. Other options will need to be utilised and the initial plan to break the curse will still need to be competed, if it can.
