With the body count rising, the package still missing and trouble firmly on their tail.
This was easily my favorite of the Thursday Murder Club books.
If you want to know who done it, spoiler alert- It was the humor that did it.
Sooo good.
I'm giving this book a five star rating because of this even though I thought it a bit messy at the end what with all the bodies and their perpetrators stacking up and switching around, respectively.
I also didn't really see the need for the fox's inclusion.
A further plus was how neatly the author slipped in characters' background histories and current lives going on amongst all the accumulating corpses. Particularly moving were Elizabeth's drama and Ibrahim's.
I think I'd recommend reading at least the first in the series before this one though so you can get to know the characters before enjoying them more fully in this installment. The author promises more and I am glad to hear it!
The septuagenarian gang continue their adventures in this fourth installment. As I was listening, I heard that the film had been cast. Helen Mirren as Elizabeth (perfect, the person everyone cast for the role in their mind), Ben Kingsley as Ibrahim (excellent), Pierce Brosnan as Ron (Huh? Too young, way too handsome and slick, let's see what he pulls off) and a TBD for Joyce. I hope they pick a fresh face, though a fresh 70-something may be a challenge.
This book continues the gentle friendship and wit of our four heroes, with the usual big suspension of disbelief necessary to believe that the gang can outwit and outplay the worst kind of thugs. However, this book is different in that we have the culmination of the storyline with Elizabeth's husband, Stephen. Osman has been setting us up for this over the last three books, it's still incredibly sad. This subplot gives the book a much more philosophical bent than the three earlier books.'
The romance scam subplot is both timely and topical. People of all ages fall for romance scams (loneliness is a scourge in this era of 10,000 "friends") but the elderly are particularly vulnerable.
I felt a bit wrung out at the end of this book and am actually glad Osman is taking a break from the series. I honestly don't know how he can keep carrying on. While a septuagenarian "murder club" is wonderfully charming, they can hardly have the life expectancy (if you'll pardon the expression) of an Armand Gamache, a Guido Brunetti, or a Cork O'Connor. I'm curious to see what he comes up with next.
Love this series. From Joyce, Elizabeth, Ibrahim, and Ron. All these characters are so lovely and just make me want to retire to my own little piece of paradise like Cooper’s Chase to drink wine all day and solve murders on Thursdays!
I thoroughly enjoy each installment of The Thursday Murder Club. Osman has created likable and lovable characters with varying points of view to give us an inside look at each of them. You're laughing out loud, you're a little teary and, as I get further into The Last Devil to Die, I anticipate there may be an ugly cry coming. And it's worth it because to actually care about the characters and see them as real people is, to me, good writing. I'll be back for every installation he wants to write!
I have loved each of these books. How refreshing that an author writes about senior citizens as if they still have wits, skills and imagination. The humour is also spot on. Recommended unreservedly.
With the release of the Netflix movie of THE THURSDAY MURDER CLUB, I picked up the fourth in the series THE LAST DEVIL TO DIE. It’s been out over a year, but I hadn’t gotten around to it. The fifth book comes out soon. This book wraps up several story threads and it’s appropriate that there was a bit of a break between the installments.
A friend of Stephen's who made an appearance in a previous book is murdered and the club investigates his death. The official investigation is taken away from Chris and Donna and they have to depend on the club and even do a little "off the books" investigating of their own." Over all, this is a solid entry to the series.
Osman is taking a bit of a break before the next installment to focus on a new series. Though as I said, it took me a while to get to this one, so the next one is going to be out soon, so it's like no time at all has passed for me. :-)
I enjoyed the TMC movie in spite of the changes from the book. The casting and acting were excellent. The changes were (mostly) necessary to condense the story into a two-hour movie. I (along with the vocal critics) will be curious how the producers will handle the one glaring change if they make more movies.
I'm still reading this series. I've been doing that in order, because that's how this series is set up. While it might be possible to just read this book without reading the others before it, I think you would miss important information and connections. Unfortunately, I still feel some of the characters act 10 years younger than they are. This time our crew takes on a cold case. There are unknown forces that would prefer this cold case stay cold. They come at the murder club from an unexpected angle. They'd like to stop everything by eliminating members by having one member kill several of the crew and a couple of outsides just for good measure. It doesn't happen that way. The details I will leave to you to read and find out. The series is a more action packed cozy than we are used to. I find, if I can turn off my aching knees for a bit, I can enjoy the story.
I thoroughly enjoyed these books! They are well written, clever enough that I can’t figure out much in advance the who done it part, and I have liked very much how the relationships have progressed with the books. And they are fun, sometimes laugh out loud fun. Since I am now an older adult (not sure how that happened, but it did) I have also enjoyed how the retirees are portrayed. They are sharp, willing to work together, and willing to not only make new friendships but deepen them. These have been my go to commuter books- great to read on the train on the way home. I hope there will be more!
I don't often write reviews for books on here BUT the series is worthy of breaking habits. The stories may be far fetched, it wouldn't be a murder "mystery" if they weren't, but the characters make the entire series. With every page, I moved closer to each of them... Can't wait for the 5th installment!
Here's hoping Mr Spielberg doesn't ruin the images I have in my mind of the Thursday Murder Club!
Wow! Just wow! I am speechless. This book is amazing! From the characters to the mysteries Richard Osman really outdid himself this time! The Thursday Murder Club is full of wit and humor and clever comebacks with its fair share of life lessons and wisdom, I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves anything I said above. My only complaint is that there is not more of them!
I have read these books since the first release. I love them all, but number 4 was especially moving. Humor is mixed into the conversation and situations, which makes these easy to keep reading 'one more chapter'. The characters are engaging. I am in my late sixties but I want to grow up to be these people or at least be part of a group of friends like this. Many thanks to Richard Osman.
Highly recommended! I love Richard Osman's style of bouncing around between characters. I think his storytelling is intuitive and easy to connect with. I don't remember all of the dates, so I'm putting this under 2024.
I had already read all 3 previous books and finally got round to The Last Devil to Die. This book made me cry!!! I love how Osman writes his characters, you can picture and hear them so clearly. Although this plot line was a bit boring compared to his others, I still loved it.
Brilliant easy read. I love all four books. With series one tends to lose interest half way as there is usually quite a bit of repetition or lull moments: not here!
I’ve read the entire series twice, savoring each sentence. I fell in love with the characters, even the bad guys. Please tell me there will be another in the story of my favorite pensioners.
The writing made you want to know more. The characters are lovable and maddening and people you want to know. I went through this series wanting more!!
Just so captivating to every single person of the Thursday Murder Club. Never ceases to amaze me how wild they can go, but it's never exaggerated nor repetitive.
