Body Count: A Vampire Novella

Rate this book
Evil has pervaded the idyllic town of Violetview, and Mayor Mort Hammerschidt is determined to stop it. No matter the cost. A town meeting reveals some sort of demon has emerged from the depths of the earth and is stalking the once-peaceful town’s citizens, feeding on farm animals and snatching women.

Except no human bodies have been found. The victims just…disappear.

Or do they?

It soon becomes apparent that whatever thing they’re dealing with can turn into its victim and replicate their exact features. Anyone could be next. And you’d never know it.

The townspeople decide homecoming is the perfect opportunity to catch the vampire-like shapeshifter. What better way to draw in a vampire than an all-you-can-eat buffet?

But there’s two sides to every story. And sometimes the scariest monster is a teenage girl’s best friend who’s just trying to stay alive.

Lane is a certified poet, paperback writer, and occasional creator of smut who lives in Washington (the state!) with his (ex) wife, two-year-old daughter, stepdog, and best friend (it’s quite the full house). If you blink, you’ll miss him, so please keep your eyes on him at all times. He’ll appreciate the attention and support.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I picked up this book because I was looking for a quick, captivating, thriller-ish story to read during my breaks while I was taking my school exams, but it ended up taking me weeks to finish because I could not stay interested. My biggest issue with this book was how little I cared about any of the characters. I wanted to root for and sympathize with Emma and Corina but I couldn't because they didn't make sense. How does someone being okay with murder but not with stealing blood from a blood drive make sense? Only one of those instances takes a life. If anything, I felt like I understood the mayor more; a creature was killing people in his town and he must stop it. Did he need to go to the extreme measures he did? IDK, but I understood him a lot more than I understood Corina and Emma. Also of note was that I understood Corina more than I understood Emma. For me, in order to enjoy this book I should have come out of the ending with closure or grief, not the feeling of "Oh, that's it." The plot points were impactful, but I was not invested enough in the characters to care. I think the book needed more room to really sit in the characters rather than brush through them.

Outside of the story, I think the book could use formatting to make scene changes less jarring. I really did like the premise, I just did not get what I was looking for for it.

I loved this novella. It was a great story and I loved reading it. I do wish there was more backstory and or just more to read. But overall it was a really great read! I highly recommend to people who love vampire stories.

Thanks BookSirens for the ARC - this was a fun little vampire story. I liked the way the vampire worked, and it was a quick easy read. Characterisation was fairly simplistic and there could have been more backstory, but I guess it's a novella, not a novel, so there are some trade-offs.

I enjoyed the story and the lore behind it. I’d love to get a novel-length version to get more background. The book could use a little more editing for the little things, but I love the overall story.
