It was the perfect cutesy mix of nostalgia and "kilig" for me. I loved that it's a gay lovestory that, refreshingly, was not all about coming out or some raunchy coming of age adventure. Definitely looking forward to more volumes from this series
a cute and easy read that truly transports you to the filipino life of the past. the references to nutri-buns, SIPs, frog dissections, and lazy walks after school evoke a strong sense of nostalgia.
i really appreciated the wholesome friendship between joaquin and gian. joaquin is the kind of guy friend you wish you had in your teens if you were a gay person—supportive and very understanding.
the art style is reminiscent of the 90s morning cartoons like princess sarah and judy abbott. i wish there had been a cartoon like this in my childhood, one with a story like this that i could relate to.
the only issue i had here was that their facial features were occasionally inconsistent. nonetheless, i had a great time reading this. it's such a light and fun read that i finished it in less than an hour.
A place in time where there is hope, youth and first love.
Somewhere In My Past is a graphic novel written and illustrated by Gigi Chan in which the story is set in Davao City during the late 1980's where a shy adolescent gay boy, Gian Celis and a transfer student Joaquin Cojuanco meet together and instantly form a spark.
The story is light and an easy read. In some way, the graphic novel evokes a sense of nostalgia which makes it more appealing. Cassette tapes. Lazy walks after schools. Afternoon hangouts. Buying pandesal (salted bread) in the morning. These are what we stay alive for, during the glorious time of our lives.
I appreciate the wholesome friendship betwene Gian and Joaquin. They have cute interactions every time and I can't help but swoon over them. Joaquin is the kind of guy that you wish you had when you were highschool, if you were a gay person. He doesn't see you as a nuisance. He's kind and understanding towards the people around him and that's what make him a likeallble character.
This is also a refreshing read because the plot can be simple especially for others but it's heartwarming. It's a slice-of-life story about two boys navigating their lives amd friendship and the mundane things that they do, as if a way to deepen the bonds.
The only problem that I encountered with the book is the inconsistencies in the drawing of the characters. But overall, I enjoyed reading this book. I wish more people would appreciate this one because this is like the Filipino version and Heartstopper and I'm so glad I finished this book in an hour.
What I liked: • It was super cute! It really made me remember my teenage days. • This was the kind of book I was craving for when I just accepted my sexuality, I wish I had read it back then • I love how positive it feels.
What I didn't like: • There's like an inconsistency in the drawings of the characters.
