Zero to Engineer a story of the American dream by Terry Kim
The personal stories shared in the beginning of this book are very touching and inspiring.
Terry's concept of being on "the other side of the table" is certainly one concept that is going to stick with me for quite a while. I think all of us should continue to strive to get to the other side of the table. We need to be able to negotiate better, leveraging experience we have amassed. Some other great lines from the book:
"save yourself time and concentrate your energy on certifications. When you have six, nine or even twelve certifications to your name your resume will be sizzling"
"that means you are the best solution to all of these issues"
I wish I had a book like this in my hands five or ten years ago. I'm one of the folks that remained in help desk level support for far too long. I applied to nearly every job opening but often it would be with the exact same company where I was employed as help desk technician. As a result, there did not seem to be as much flexibility when it came time to consider shifting me into a better role. I recall hearing the words "you're doing great where you're at.", "we need you just where you are." That should have been my cue to be more aggressive with looking elsewhere for better employment.
I also enjoyed the artwork in Terry's book. This book can really serve as a blueprint towards better employment not only do you have the concepts within its pages but you also have NGT Academy as a resource.
