Happy release day ruby rana and thank you for letting me read another amazing book written by you🫶🏾 I was eating the banter up like she hates him but he is a simp and fakes hating her 😩😫 that will do it for me. I love seeing indi and landon again and I was living for the found family. The things wade did for her as make her favourite food and throwing a birthday party where he put her favourite flowers on the tables and served only vegetarian food 🥹 we love a thoughtful man and bestie you surprised me with the butt stuff 👀🤣🤣 i see you 👀 I was shocked 😳 I would recommend this book to everyone and definitely read book 1 first to have the ful experience!!
okay 3.5, maybe 3.75? this is the definition of a great potato chip book. the plot was just fine, but the romance and the steam?????? mmm mmm MMMMMMM i ate it UP!!! while i enjoyed these characters and the dynamics of their relationship, the writing was kind of disjointed and i felt like it wasn’t fully flushed out. there were multiple occasions where the scene would jump and i would have to go back and reread a paragraph because i got confused on where we were and what we were doing. it definitely didn’t have the best flow but i wanted a steamy hockey romance where the MMC is obsessed and a little pathetic and boy did this deliver!!!! there were parts that were more emotional than i expected, talk about MAJOR mommy issues for her and daddy issues for him.
looking past the writing faults i definitely enjoyed myself (: there is a book that came before this one but honestly i don’t know if ill read it. this was appealing because it was a super headstrong and assertive FMC and a puppy dog MMC so that’s what i stuck around for, and i think the first one is your typical domineering MMC and a soft FMC which i can get elsewhere and with better writing lol. no hate though this was a great time!
This book was such a good time. It was filled with SO MANY microtropes that I love and I could not put it down.
Wade Boehner is goalie for the Ottawa Regents and Gabe Finch is a sports reporter. They have had some previous lapses of judgement and fooled around but Gabe is always clear to keep him at arms length. They are both keeping their walls up, but maybe they have finally met the right person to start bringing those walls down.
Wade is a man DOWN BAD, and we love to see it. The banter is spicy and fun. Add this book to your tbr now!
Trope - fake dating, reverse age gap(7-years), reformed playboy, golden retriever × black cat, enemies to lovers, he falls first, sports romance, banter, workplace, hate-to-love, sports reporter × NHL goalie romcom, BDSM, she's the alpha, bi-representation, HEA
This one was good from the beginning to the end.Everything was so well written and planned. I usually don't have high expectations from Indian MC books, because some way or the other it's spoiled by the "prejudices", but this one was so damn good; the representation was accurate and in moderation. I loved how the characters respected the culture, there were no lame jokes about it (thanks to, Ruby).
Gabe is a smartass reporter who hates Wade's guts. He is a goofy, "immature" (her initial thoughts) playboy who is never serious about anything. They have multiple "incidents" where they sleep together, but that doesn't stop them from hating one another. Until her ex tries to mess with her, and Wade protects her, they have to fake-date to deal with the media.
I understood where their friends came from, but the whole ordeal they made out of their "relationship" felt absurd.
Wade and Gabe fought most of the time, but their banter was hilarious every single time. Initially, Wade came off as childish but over time, he grew on me and I saw why he acted that way. He was too cute and loving, and I liked how he challenged Gabe and showed her how much she meant to him. All the efforts he made, just kept melting my heart.
A DESI BADASS FMC and a WHIPPED PLAYBOY MMC IS ALL I NEEDED to enjoy this book. Watching Gabe control Wade in the bedroom had been the best thing but what I loved more was how he let her do anything to him because he knew how much having control, meant to her.
Our guy was whipped and I LOVED THAT FOR him. Also, the bi-representation had me in a chokehold. Wade was such a lovely character, he was real throughout the book and seeing how much he struggled to express himself I loved it when he finally spoke his heart out.
Gabe was loving and strong. She had issues and was hurt severely but many times I just wished she gave a glimpse of happiness around Wade who was trying his hardest to make her happy.
I loved those small glimpse of Indian households and life. They just made my heart swell and OMG, Gabe's parent's story was so beautiful. _____________________ The only reason this book lost its 5-star rating was because - * of how it took them so long to confess * I loved Wade, and I genuinely felt bad for him—he immensely cared about Gabe—was patient with her, and showed her his vulnerability, yet she gave him close to nothing. Emotion-wise she was a close vault and after a point, it was just brutal to watch him put in effort and her not respond to it. She tried, but little words of affirmation would have been helpful because there was no way she waited that long to tell him how she genuinely felt. Our boy deserved better. * Another thing I wanted in this book was a list of players' name and their positions because at times it was hard to remember them as the author kept switching between first and last names. _____________________ The epilogue was beautiful, from their wedding glimpse to their post-marriage life. All those scenes made me swoon.
I enjoyed every bit of this book, even the ones that came as a surprise. It had the right amount of plot and spice. Overall 4.5/5
listen closely because i'm not going to repeat myself again: this is seriously one of my top 3 books of 2024. everyone remember my obsession with sinners anonymous??? yeah... this truly is for my "sinners consumed" and "sinners condemned" girlies, but make it reformed hockey playboy x black cat sportscaster x enemies to lovers!!!! OH MY GOD!!! THIS IS NOT A DRILL!!!!
first and foremost, i want to preface this review by saying: this is 100% one of the spiciest books i've ever read and my god, was it good!!! im continuously going back to reread it and it's still not disappointing (iykyk) 😮💨✨🤠
this book was absolute magic and the perfect cure for the reading slump i've been in for like two months. because wow.... reverse grumpy x sunshine, black cat x golden retriever, hockey goalie x sportscaster, enemies with benefits, boy obsessed, kinky spice, fake dating, age gap, bisexual rep .... do you even need me to go on???? miss rana really took the whole "enemies to lovers" a bit too seriously when she wrote gabe finch because that woman is literally no man's peace and eats male hearts for breakfast like it's her job 😮💨😮💨 i think i might actually have the biggest crush on her????? literally giving femme fatale x manon blackbeak vibes and how could you not be completely obsessed????? this woman could literally step on me and i would be the one apologizing for inconveniencing her. she's so freaking powerful and I LOVED that depiction in a romance book, because you usually just find that in fantasy romance books. i also adored the little depictions of her indian culture in the forms of food and nicknames, it was so sweet! and wade, my darling wade. this man is top tier book boyfriend material and such a dork for this woman. 100% cinnamon roll and golden retriever core. also the mouth on this man should be 1000% illegal, i can't. i'm such a slut for the overprotective enemy before they turn lovers, i eat that shit up every! single! time!!!!
i cannot recommend this book enough!!!! it literally had everything i want to read about in a book and it had me hooked immediately. i already feel the bookish hangover coming after finishing this, ughhhhhh 😭💌
HAPPY RELEASE DAY!!!!✨🥳 This is definitely one of my top reads of 2024 & has become an all time favorite🥹 I told @rubyranawrites that I wouldn’t cry & refused to do so… but not gonna lie I did tear up… but I also giggled & blushed, kicked my feet & had the best time ever reading this. I absolutely adored the book, Gabe, & Wade. Gabe is such a baddie but I felt for her🥺🥺 and Wade? This man is down BADDDDD & im sure if she needed a heart he wouldn’t hesitate to carve out his own to give to her. No questions asked. And the banter?? Phenomenal. I already can’t wait to get a physical copy and annotate her & share.
The amount of highlights I have is CRIMINALLLL☠️ but idc😌 I was honestly hooked from start to finish & im so sad it’s over😔
BUT Gabe is my twinnie🤭🤭 sis really asked “why are you so obsessed with me?” AHAHHA LIKE HELLO?? HELL YEAH😈🥰
Anyway.. Freckles & pretty boy have my heart & always will.
This is a glimpse of how obsessed, head over heels this man is for her: “You can be anything you want with me. Take it. Take me.”
this is maybe my favorite book of 2024 (for sure in my top 5)… coming in clutch as we enter the final month of the year. cannot wait to reread this one 125263394 more times. my favorite type of mmc, reformed playboy/golden retriever/happy go lucky boy with a BACKSTORY. don’t even get me started on the pegging…. very smutty, very perfect, very much recommended
Oop I loved the spice so much! Butterfly Effect is a cutesy romance novel that takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions. This story deals with second chance encounters and the struggles between enemies to lovers. You will feel all the emotions in this novel.
Wade and Gabe completely caught me off guard—in the best way possible! (Sorry, Landon and Indi, but these two have officially stolen the spotlight for me—no hard feelings!) They were absolutely HILARIOUS, and their chemistry was off the charts. This was such a fantastic enemies-to-lovers story, with a perfect mix of black cat and golden retriever energy and found family.
Wade Boehner, my sweet cinnamon roll! He’s impossible not to adore. I’m so ridiculously soft for that man—it’s unreal. I just want to give him and my girl Gabe the biggest hugs ever.
And the spice, Ruby? It had me this close to chucking my Kindle across the room 🫠 It was that insanely good! 🤭
Thank you Ruby for the e-arc, as always, I have the best time with the Ottawa Regent boys and their sassy girls! 💚

I need more of Wade & Gabe! I received Butterfly Effect by Ruby Rana as an eARC and when I tell you this book had me hooked from page one! I finished BE is 2 days, I couldn’t put it down! The spice was spicy, and the character development was everything I needed it to be! Gabe and Wade had the perfect about of banter with wit, charm, and love mixed in!
this book comes out December 2nd to KU and paperback- do yourself a favor and get it! You won’t be disappointed.
the same base story as a million other romance novels. hate eachother but attracted to each other, fake date, cross lines, get together fr. i do like the no third act breakup, it was more of a grey area transition but no fighting or hurt.
too smutty for me tbh im not one for needing it every other chapter, and it definitely was a center plot for these two when there was many things that could have gotten more attention. i did some serious skimming because it felt like an actual intermission to their plot lines on multiple occasions.
the family issues they had we basically got nothing on. like they each had one small issue with it and then we just got like a simple explanation, which im not looking for it to be fixed im more saying it should be more interconnected with the characters life if its emphasized so heavily when its introduced.
also there is rep in here for fmc being partially indian but its not a huge part of her identity and its actually one of the things she struggles with that sometimes just feels ignored so that we could get a chapter of smut.
this was a classic mid romance book. good for breaking me out a rut because i knew what to expect so it was digestible but still had things to entertain me with side plots. i should say i didn’t read book 1 because i didn’t wanna and i could tell when something would’ve been a good easter egg had i read the first one, but still completely normal to read alone.
•Hockey Romance •Hate to Love •Fake Dating •Black Cat X Golden Retriever •Goalie X NHL Sportscaster •Funny Banter •Reverse Age Gap •South Asian Rep •Pegging •She gives him hand necklaces •Degradation •Crawl to me •No 3rd act breakup •Lots of spice •Obsessed MMC
Wade and Gabe have a mixture of hate and tension between them that leads to them hooking up. One night Gabe is caught entering Wades hotel with him (although they didn’t hookup that night) and the internet goes crazy when pictures are circulated. The last time one of the Ottawa players got a playboy rep it looked bad on the team and ticket sales plummeted. To stop this from happening again their bosses push them to fake date until new years. This means they have to be seen out together looking like a couple and in doing so they discover things about one another they never expected.
I absolutely LOVED this book from the second I picked it up to the second it ended.
Gabe killed me. Shes so unintentionally funny sometimes, I was dying laughing. She’s a very complex character who doesn’t let anyone get close to her and keeps them away with snippy responses to guard her heart. But that didn’t stop Wade. Hell no, this man ATE IT UP. She put a leash on him and walked that man like a dog (not literally but he would definitely let her). Her character development was immaculate. Ruby did such a great job.
Wade hides himself behind an unserious, jokester facade when really he’s a book loving soft boy who has daddy issues and just wants to be loved. No one ever takes him seriously so when Gabe started to it unraveled his mental walls and he was able to open up to her about things he had never talked to anyone about before.
I teared up so much for both of them, the way they struggled letting each other in. I’m so glad they got their HEA🥹
I swear I think I highlighted half of this book, there were so many scenes I loved. The first time they hooked up he’s trying to say all these dirty things to her and this woman (while he’s balls deep) says ‘don’t you ever shut up?’ 😂 the way he compromised his own furniture just to get her in his bed instead of a guest room. Had a basketball court built in his penthouse so she could play there. Sold his lambo because it reminded her of her ex’s car. Paid for lawn care for her father’s house/business. Bought her a damn bakery so she could make baked goods anytime she wanted without worry that they’d go to waste and named it after her. He needs to be in the book of ‘best book boyfriends ever’.
So far this is my favorite book in this series!
If you’re looking for a fake dating, hate to love, romcom where the fmc is the top then definitely read this!
I'm feeling so blissful at the moment after reading this book. Damn it's good. It's everything & anything one can expect from a sports romance, specially when he's a goalie and she's a sportscaster in the NHL. 🙇🏻♀️
I'm so in love with them, I cant even explain in words how beautiful, interesting & HOT asf they both are. It hurts that they are fictional. 😭❤️🩹
This book literally has it all - the way they hate each other, the banter, the back & fourth they have, the bed chem 🥵 don't even get me started one that. The spice in this book right here is one of its kind for sure. The submissive-ness, the dominance, the switch of roles was so damn hot that I literally had to stop myself to process what has happened. 😭🔥🙇🏻♀️
Also where can I get my own - Wade Please?! I'm literally on my knees for you. 🙇🏻♀️ He's everything I can ever dream of, the things he did for literally gave me butterflies 😭 must be the Butterfly Effect 🦋 and Wade effect 💚😭
Also Gabe, mommy, you have become an inspiration 🤭 The sassy-ness she has is unbeatable. Damn she's so HOT had to literally remind myself I'm straight dude. 😭
Not to forget the team, THE TEAM, oh I adore them all so much. Loved their bonding, the teasing, the whole found family trope is so well represented in the book is so good. 🤌🏻
What stickout with me was the fact that with the right person things are always worth it, it's us who has to peel the layers and be vulnerable to experience the joy of love. 🥺💚
The plot, the characters, the bonding, the overall storyline development was so good I didn't even know when I reached the last chapter and the ending is wholesome loved it beyond words and not to forget the spice was SPICIN. 😌👍🏻
This was my first time reading author's work and I have literally became a fan at once. Definitely need to read the first book in the series and I can’t wait to read the upcoming books in the series, literally I'm so desperate at this point 🤭
Thank you so much Ruby, for providing me the opportunity to ARC read this beautiful book of yours. I'm beyond grateful. ❤️❤️❤️
studying in a design college is both tiring and mentally exhausting and i needed something to make me feel better and guess what? this very book decided to give me one of the best times of my life!!!
wade boehner and gabe finch have me on chokehold (LITERALLY) and i am not complaining at all!!! they're the cutest and absolutely the bestest!!! i want what they have or else i don't want anything at all 😤 (please god i am begging you). i laughed and squealed and once again felt so damn single while reading this book.
albeit you can read this book without reading the first part but in my opinion you should also check out the first one in order to get a better experience. thank you again to ruby for making my days good by sending me an arc of this book! can't wait for your next masterpiece 🩷
This book felt like it was all over the place, I was so confused if one minute Gabe hated wade or liked him. At the end it was just pure smut, I skimmed because it was the same every chapter. Giving a two star cause wade was actually a good guy and boyfriend. 🤷🏻♀️
From beta read to arc read, Ruby’s hard work really showed. She took every criticism I (and other beta readers) had with so much care and made sure to make Butterfly Effect her best work yet. We both learned so much throughout this process together and I am SO incredibly proud of her.
Butterfly Effect is the sequel to Slapshot that follows Landon’s teammate and Indi’s best friend, Wade and Gabe. I truly do love each character individually but together? They’re a powerhouse.
While Wade may appear to be this fuckboy who only cares about sex and nothing else, he’s so much more than that. He’s incredibly aware of details - he notices that you’re a vegetarian from all the meals you eat, he learns so much about your culture and traditions and makes sure he gets it right, he calls your family and friends to nail your favourite recipes down, he builds you a basketball gym because he sees how badly you miss playing. He cares SO much for her and would truly do anything for her. He’s thoughtful, he understands boundaries, he’s tall, he’s hot, he’s one hell of a lay - what more can you want from a man!!
Gabe is so tall (like me!!!), confident, a walking powerhouse and cares SO much for the ones she loves, especially Indi. Yet, there’s a part of herself that she hides from the world. Her vulnerability and insecurities are hidden by sarcasm and quick wit. She’s pushes away Wade when he gets too close because she’s terrified of how it’ll change things, how she’ll change and sometimes, it gets on my nerves. But I love it because it shows how real Gabe is - and how similar we can be.
Both Wade and Gabe have their parental issues (samezies!) and it was so good to see them both work through them together. They were such a well matched pair - their opposite personalities really balanced them out so well. Their banter was so fun, their soft moments made me melt, and god damn. These two are SO horny. The amount of spice in this book genuinely surprised me - non stop y’all!! It was great to see how adventurous were but honestly, it was refreshing to see Wade as the submissive one. We need more submissive males and more dominant women!!
Thank you to Ruby Rana for trusting me with her baby. I can’t wait to see where this series goes!
Ruby Rana has done it again with this book and I just can keep talking about it as long as someone would want me to. So, if these are the tropes you like, this is the perfect book for you.
🥅 nhl sportscaster x nhl goalie 🪴 black cat x golden retriever 🥅 reformed playboy 🪴 fake dating 🥅 enemies with benefits 🪴 age gap (FMC is older by 8 years) 🥅 spicy banter 🪴 spicy spice (open door) 🥅 no third act breakup 🪴 standalone in an interconnected series
Ruby has with so much emotions and rawness created two characters- Wade & Gabe, who are broken and hurt by people who were closest to them. They keep their people close and their emotions close but when situations are created in such a way that Wade and Gabe have to fake date because of one night of them being out. There is banter from the very beginning of the book and oh, even when they got together it was still alive.
This is one of the spiciest books I have read in 2024 and oh I cannot hype this book enough. I am a fan with how Ruby incorporates representation in her books and I absolutely loved it in this book again.
Wade has my heart soul with all the sweet things he did for Gabe!! Love as pure as Wade had for Gabe gave too much expectation to me to have in real life because yeah that is the way to have a boyfriend and partner.
(I received an ARC from the author) Have you ever finished a book that was so good you're mad it's over? That's me right now, writing this review after blazing through it. I hesitated to start this because I loved Snap Shot so much and what if this wasn't as good? I've never been more happy to have my fears unfounded. The banter is top notch, and the sex scenes are sublime. Also, as an Indian/White woman, I truly felt seen by Gabe's characterization; I think Ruby Rana really captured that straddling of both worlds. I will absolutely be adding this to my list of comfort re-reads and will most likely re-read it again before the year is out.
TLDR: I liked the characters and their sexual dynamics. Some of the writing choices didn't work for me but overall an enjoyable read which I rated 3.5 stars1.
Wade is the cutest guy - himbo playboy on the outside, but actually intelligent and thoughtful underneath. And he works so hard to get Gabe to open up emotionally. He's definitely an “acts of service” guy: things like making her favourite Indian food from scratch; buying a new car because she didn't like the old one; building a basketball court in his house because it's her sport.
Gabe started out as a great FMC - athletic, independent and not taking shit from anyone, but a lot of it is a front to hide her insecurities and grief. This is usually a character type I really like, but I did start to go off her in the second half.
He falls first and she spends a lot of time on “it's just sex, I don't like him”, which I usually like. But I started to feel sorry for him a bit really, and she doesn't have a lot of empathy. Although her behaviour was a defence mechanism, I don't think that excuses the fact that at 75% she's still saying she hates him.
The sex was pretty hot and there was a lot of it, but they were lots of short scenes whereas I would have preferred fewer scenes with more detail. I'd classify them both as “switch”, which is unusual to find. There's dirty talk and praise and a bit of degradation from both of them; it felt like quite a real and evenly matched dynamic. It was nice to read a pegging scene in a book which is firmly romance, not erotica, but again it was fairly short.
A couple of things I didn't like: * There was not much plot. There's a lot about the characters from the previous book getting married and having a baby. I haven't read the previous book so I don't care about this character.
* Some of the writing choices were a bit odd. Like there are loads of flashbacks, sometimes to things that happened just before, so could have just been done in order. For example, they are at a party, go home and start fooling around and the scene ends. Then in the next chapter she's having brunch and has a flashback to last night's sex. Why not just have that in chronological order? Now I've forgotten what was happening at brunch.
* There were a couple of weird typos, odd word choices and and turns of phrase, but nothing too bad.
Trigger warnings: parental abandonment, parental death, mention of suicide (not main character), internalised guilt
“If you’re lucky,” he continues, “you meet someone that makes you wonder if things could be different. That you could be different. And they’re so amazing, so breathtaking, you want to be who they deserve. You want it so badly you start imagining an entire life with them. You dream about talking late at night and breakfast in bed, living together, mowing the lawn on weekends, barbecuing in the summer, building a family, growing old together…” — Rating: 4.75✨ Smut: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ — Wade and Gabe go from (not really) hating each other to really really loving each other in this romance that’ll have you laughing out loud & tearing up, all at the same time.
I already loved Ruby’s debut and the way she wrote her characters, so I had such high hopes for Butterfly Effect. When i tell y’all, IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT.
I am so in love with these two characters and their love story. Specifically, I loved how the chapters revealed layers upon layers of these characters’ true personalities. The moments when they let their masks falls and let themselves just be their true selves with each other felt magical. I also love how I smiled and squealed while reading but my heart also hurt so much at some points. You gotta love books that make you feel that whole spectrum of emotions🥹 And that smut rating with such a good plot?🥵 I can’tttttt
Ruby also has such a great balance of POVs through her dual POV writing style. Whenever I wanted to know something, I’d get the perfect POV for that. It was like she knew exactly what I’d want to read & when I’d want to read it.
This would have been an easy 5 star read for me, but I would have loved just a bit more diving into the traumas of both characters. They already had such beautiful character arcs but since I loved them so much, I wanted to see them work through these difficulties together a bit more!
Overall, this was a fantastic read and I’m so happy I got to read it before the end of the year♥️

RUBY I'M SO IN LOVE WITH THIS BOOK 😭💗
The way Ruby wrote Gabe & Wade was perfection - I can't stop thinking about them. Ruby’s writing is so beautiful, that you instantly fall in love with her characters and her writing. I absolutely loved this book from the moment I picked it up. Every time I read one of Ruby's books, I feel so safe and the characters give me so much warmth and comfort that I feel like I am a part of this family and I love every one of them 🥺💗
I’m so in love with my black cat Gabe. She’s so confident, powerful, and such an inspiration to every woman. I love how she’s very close with Indi – these two have the sweetest friendship ever 😭💗 When she talked about her mom, I cried – she misses her mom so much and in some situations, she needed her mom more than anything. I really want to hug and protect Gabe because she deserves the world 🥺💗After her breakup with her fiancé she said no to hockey players but a certain sweet & adorable hockey player only has eyes for her 🤭💗
Ruby – I love Wade so much 🥺💗 My sweet golden boy who will do anything for Gabe. The way he sold his car cause it reminded her of her ex-fiancé, planned a whole birthday party for her, and cooked her favorite Indian food – HE IS EVERYTHING 😭💗 Ruby, I love Wade so much! Also, the way he hides parts of himself because he doesn’t want anyone to see him differently – my sweet boy 🥺💗
I loved how both started to trust each other and how Gabe let Wade show her the way she deserves to be loved. He knew how special she was and even his mom knew from the moment she saw Gabe that she was Wade’s soulmate.
It was so cute when Wade bought Gabe an entire bakery because he knows how much she loves to bake cupcakes – where is my Wade? 🥹💗
The nicknames Wade & Gave had for each other were everything – Freckles & Pretty Boy. They are the definition of soulmates 😭💗
Ruby, I’m so proud of you 🥺 The found family continues to grow and I love that we get to meet characters from the previous books - I missed Landon, Indi, Fletcher, Bez, Skylar & Derrick so much! 😭💗
Butterfly Effect by Ruby Rana is a spicy and refreshing fake dating romance that flips the traditional dynamic. The grumpy, older female main character (FMC), Gabe, contrasts beautifully with the fun-loving, goofy male main character (MMC), Wade. This reversal of typical roles adds a fresh perspective to the story.
The story begins when the press uncovers photos of Gabe and Wade together, leading their managers to make them fake date until New Year’s. Wade, hopelessly obsessed with Gabe, is an absolute joy. His relentless efforts to make her feel valued and secure, even while masking his own vulnerabilities behind a cheerful facade, make my heart swell for him. He deserves so much love for the sincerity and care he pours into their relationship.
Gabe, on the other hand, can be a bit frustrating at times, especially when she reacts coldly to Wade's heartfelt gestures. However, her hesitation stems from her fear of commitment and past heartbreak, making her reluctance more understandable. She struggles with feelings of inadequacy, adding depth to her character.
The story truly shines in its progression from initial annoyance and misunderstanding to love and mutual respect. The banter and vulnerability shared by Gabe and Wade as they gradually open up to one another are beautifully crafted. Their emotional growth and the realization of their similarities make the journey compelling.
Another standout aspect of this novel is its exploration of sexual dynamics, including experimentation and the portrayal of a male masochist, which feels fresh and unique. Additionally, the inclusion of Gabe's Indian heritage adds a rich cultural layer, with references to traditions like Ganeshotsav and dishes like Mutter Paneer seamlessly woven into the narrative.
Special thanks to Ruby Rana for the eARC of this book!
I wasn’t expecting to be done reading in a little over 24 hours from starting it, but here we are.

I’ve been so looking forward to this book basically since I finished SNAP SHOT last winter. Even then, I was tickled by Gabe and Wade’s relationship dynamic, and couldn’t wait until it was center stage. So you can imagine my glee when I got the email with the ARC. The banter between these two is OUT OF THIS WORLD. The grin on my face was not dissimilar to Wade’s on the cover during those parts. Gabe was grumpy and feisty, and Wade was just a lovable goofball. Who says polar opposites don’t work well together? What I also loved about this book was that it handled serious issues with care. I knew all about Gabe’s cheating ex-fiancé from the first book, but there was more to her than met the eye, and learning her story, as difficult as it was, helped me to understand her character more. There were some surprises in there too. To name some examples, I had no idea that Wade’s real name was Walton, or that Gabe was half-Indian. The inclusion of culture and Gabe’s complicated relationship with it was another thing that made the story so interesting and gave more insight to her character. I can’t not mention the side characters in this book, particularly Indi and Landon, who were the leads in SNAP SHOT. I love how they all gave each other crap, but still had each other’s backs.
TW: grief, mentions of loss of a parent to suicide, mentions of absent parent, cheating former partner
I cannot begin to explain how much I loved reading Gabe and Wade's book! I've been waiting for this one and Ruby didn't disappoint! She brought it all and it was definitely worth the wait.
Book brings us a fan fave in Wade Boahner! He's been pining over Gabe for the longest time and she literally doesn't given him the time of day, which is absolutely hilarious! After a few run ins that lead to more...👀...The pair are spotted by the paps and what do you think the solution is? Yep! They are forced to fake date for the sake of literally everything! But the kicker is, Gabe can't stand Wade...or is there more to it than meets the eye?!
I absolutely ADORED Gabe! She is such a spitfire and literally marches to her own beat. As the book goes on, you learn so much about her and you really understand what causes her to build her walls up so high. She didn't have it easy at all. She's definitely one of my fave FMC!
Wade is downright hilarious. I can't even begin to put into words how much he made me laugh! Honestly, he's a golden retriever and I love him! He literally doesn't give up on his pursuit and goes for what he wants, and he is so respectful! I just found it so funny every time he tries to get close and she's not having any of it 😂 Also, can we take a moment to talk about the spice? I mean, Gabe has this man on his KNEES for her! I was literally blushing the whole way!
As I said, Ruby did a phenomenal job with book 2 and it was definitely worth the wait! If you haven't started the series yet, here's your sign! Congratulations on book 2 Ruby!
This is the second book in the Ottawa Regents series, where we follow Gabe Finch and Wade Boehner as they are roped into fake dating in order to keep their public reputations intact. Gabe is a sports reporter and certified badass, and Wade is a goalie for Ottawa’s hockey team, known for being a silly goofy playboy - except nobody knows he hasn’t actually slept with anyone since his one-night stand with Gabe a year ago.
The thing about Gabe Finch is I’m in love with her, so I hope Wade can fight. This character is so layered and I’m so glad we got to peel back each one. We get to see her resilience, wit, and softness at different points in the story and it made for a really well-rounded character arc.
If you look in the dictionary under “down bad”, you’d find a picture of Wade Boehner. He’s a golden retriever personified and I absolutely adored getting to know him past his surface-level persona. Wade’s consistency and dedication to meet Gabe where she needed him was so perfect.
What I really loved about this book was that it had a great balance of banter, emotion, friendship, and spice. (AND THE SPICE WAS SPICING. I WAS CLUTCHING MY PEARLS.) These characters are funny and grounded and their inner monologues were such a treat to read. There are heavy topics covered, but I think they were handled with such care and were always used to propel the story forward or provide more context for why these characters did the things they did. As always, please check the content warnings before reading.
