The Court #1

Drama Queen

Rate this book
Note to self: dumping cocktails into a man’s lap does not count as a meet cute.

Accidentally throwing a jug of Sex on the Beach onto the hottest guy at drag brunch was not how I wanted to start my performance, and forgetting to ask for his name was the cherry on top.

But when he finds me online and invites me out for drinks, it seems like my chaotic shenanigans might have worked out for once. Falling into bed with West is easy, but balancing a gorgeous, rugby player boyfriend with a day job and drag is harder than dancing in eight inch heels.

And when my participation in a local drag story hour draws the ire of certain locals, it feels like everything might fall apart. West doesn’t understand why I won’t step down, but I’ve never been afraid of being myself.

Now I just need West to stand beside me. Because he’s the only man who’s ever loved me as Rory and Bubblegum Galaxy, and I won’t let that slip away.

You can call me a drama queen, but you’ll never dull my sparkle.

I really liked this and I am looking forward to more of the series! And I see Mason from this book gets a book in another series so I am excited about that. All the appearances from past characters is getting to be a lot, there was a bunch in this book. I didnt mind that too much though and overall really liked this book.

I could not have loved this book more if I'd tried, everything in it just worked for me, and I fell big time for Bubblegum Galaxy, aka Rory.

I'd already got a soft spot for West because I'd met him in his brother's book Like I Wanted and realised he was a sweet guy who was still finding his way in the world after coming out as bisexual and turning his back on his and Theo's unsupportive parents.

Here we get to know him well, and it's clear to see that as a 6ft3in professional rugby union player, his queer experience has been very different to that of Rory's.

Rory, an electrician by trade who works with his dad and brother, has been Bubblegum Galaxy aka Sparkles, as the fabulous Bitch Fit (Eli from Charlie's Forever Love series) calls him, for a few years when his path crosses in the most unexpected way after the accidental dumping of a jug of cocktail in West's lap at a drag brunch.

I always enjoy Charlie's storytelling, she manages to bring all the warmth and feels I want from seeing two people falling in love and navigating the tricky waters of a developing relationship, and she knows how to lay down the heat.

Let's just say West's a big guy in all the ways, and drag isn't the only thing Rory's a queen for! These two don't half know how to turn each other on between the sheets, against the drawers, in the dressing room and the rest.

But, there's also a serious message in the heart of this narrative, which reflects the times we're currently in, where queer people and their experiences are being threatened and judged by those who allegedly should know better- or be turning the other cheek.

It never becomes preachy, just offers a gentle reminder that to live authentically has always been a fight, not a party, and that AIDS was a tragedy here in the UK too not that many decades ago.

Here I also want to say I'm in love with Rory's family, all of them, from his deaf younger brother Christopher, who takes the mickey out of him constantly and big praise here also for the importance of British Sign Language and it being made an obvious part of their lives, to his nurse mum Louise, who still makes their pack-up before they go to work, but most of all, with his dad Alan.

Alan, a rough and ready Londoner is above and beyond in the running for best dad ever, for reasons I'll let you find out yourselves.

I could waffle on for ages more about the brilliant way this book connects into more of Charlie's extended universe, or about how there's at least five other people I want books about!

Instead, I'll just say this is probably my favourite book she's written and I cannot wait for Evan's book in 2024.

#ARC kindly received from the author via Valentine PR, I am voluntarily leaving a review.

This book was exactly what I needed right now! It follows the love story of two beautiful people, a drag queen and a rugby player, and it had me hooked from the very beginning.

It was a delight to watch West and Rory fall in love under my eyes. Their love story unfolds naturally, the pace was perfect and they’re absolutely adorable together. Their chemistry is amazing, their time spent together is never rushed, we can feel their feelings develop and their fondness grow. They’re very playful, tender and caring together. They truly are couple goals! West is incredibly supportive of Rory, both as himself and as his drag alter ego, Bubblegum Galaxy. Also this is a personal opinion but I always prefer how Europeans date in books, the instant exclusivity and how their relationship evolves compared to Americans and their “talk” (surely because I’m European lol), so it’s why I loved it so much.

But this book is not just a fluffy romance. It tackles important issues such as homophobia, harassment, and bigotry, particularly towards femme men. Charlie Novak does a fantastic job of highlighting the contrast between individuals and how they live their queerness. It's a powerful message that challenges the stereotypes and prejudices that still exist in our society. It’s also a big f*ck you to the bigots, homophobes and transphobes of this world.

This book made me feel so much and it’s exactly what I was looking for. Rory’s family is very supportive and amazing, his dad is everything. West, on the other hand, had to wake up and understand the difference between the banter and harassment coming from his teammates.

If you have read the Always Love and Heather Bay series, you'll be happy to find a bit of a crossover in Drama Queen. Eli from Always Eli is Rory's friend and co-worker, and Theo from Like I Wanted is West's brother. It's always fun to see familiar faces in new stories!

I highly recommend Drama Queen to anyone looking for a heartwarming and engaging read. The characters are very lovable and I can't wait to dive into the next books in the series to know their stories.

Any book that mentions rugby players thighs as much as this book did, and in a way that made me constantly picture it like a fucking heathen.. deserves a high rating. 🥵🥵🥵 I hope whatever NSA agent that is assigned to spy on my search history enjoys the sheer number of pictures of thighs I’m about to hit them with. 😍

Rory & West
Rating: 4.0⭐
Narrator: Dan Calley

- Gay Sparkling Drag Queen
- Bubblegum Galaxy aka Sparkles
- Bi Rugby Player
- Drag Brunch Meet Ugly
- Hookups to More
- Size Difference
- Drag Found Family
- Self Acceptance

This was a fun listen and I liked all the cameos and crossover characters from other series from Novak. While at a drag brunch, West gets introduced to "Sparkles" in a wet and uncomfortable way but he doesn't mind. These two link back up and hookup, which they both realize needs to be a more than one time thing. It was cute how they just causally feel into getting to know each other and hanging out together.

West is out but he would be considered semi closeted. He doesn't realize how letting certain things slide is really hurtful to him and those around him. West has some growth to go through in this book as he navigates being there for Rory getting backlash for his drag, and standing up for himself. It helps that Novak explains both points of view in here, since they have different lifestyles. They didn't grow up with the same experiences so they treated situations differently and it causes some tension here and there. There is a lot of communication, deep understanding, and a will to learn from one another in this book.

I loved hearing about all the other drag queens that work with Rory and I look forward to their stories as well. I listened to this on audio and enjoyed the narration and the accents. Not everyone will be a fan of the accents, so make sure to sample the audio first if you decide to go that route.

No rating. I tried to listen to the first chapter three times and although I understand the narrator better every time, I am not looking forward to top concentration for 6 hours just to understand what he says.
Maybe he is doing an accent? For a non native like me he murmurs.

mmm i loved the idea of rory its like he was missing the sass to his sparkle. the experience to deal with the hatred .. getting into shock from a near altercation after years of dragg while bieng very not straight passing seems a stretch

he kinda reminded me bit at i think lemon from the crimson club a male stripp club...I just read ll my reviews and blurbs of all the mm stripper series I've read and o boy its hard to remember who's who and whats what's bit the dog queens parts was a nice twist. the politics is a necessity in this genre and its sad that pushing drag into mainstream it also get all the psychos who the scenes doenst need and the backlash it doesn't deserve. drag has bin around for eons and its sad to see that counterculture rebel part disappear. but its also nice to see queens making more Money and bieng able to live from their art. anyway thats what this book did for me...it painted west as prince charming with no backbone or personality ... bubblegum lacked some sass and experience like there both 30 year old highschoolers with dreams of happy ever after pets kids and a castle...

Drag queen and rugby player. They couldn't be more different, yet they fit into each other life.
I was very interested in West's story since he first appeared in Like I Wanted, as Theo's brother. He's adorable, sweet, loyal and romantic and I loved how he treated Rory/bubblegum.
Their different experience with coming out and homophobia was very interesting and well written: I like how West became aware of how much his behaviour, his being a pushover with homophobic comments, was affecting his life.

I loved Rory's family, especially his supportive former hooligan father. I also liked Mason very much and I hope we will get his book soon.

I received an Arc of this book from ForewordPR and this is my honest review

This was so sweet and funny!

This book went by so quickly! I got it as a freebie on Kindle and decided to give it a shot.
I'm glad I did too.
I mean, MM romance between a drag queen and a rugby player?
That sounds amazing...and it was!
Rory and West are so cute together, I love how Rory took care of everything and is so protective.

I have loved all of Charlie’s books but this is definitely one of my favorites. West and Rory are absolutely adorable but their story is not without its struggles. A well deserved HEA!
Bubblegum Fantasy absolutely loves doing drag. When she gets a spot at a very popular drag brunch, she’s thrilled. She’s not so thrilled when she bumps a waiter and spills a pitcher of sex on the beach on a beautiful, buff man. West isn’t worried about the soaking, but he is intrigued by the gorgeous queen who soaked him!
West is a proud bi rugby player. He knows that queer men aren’t typically celebrated in sport, but he can handle his teammates teasing. He’s proud of who he is, and he can laugh it off.
West and Rory come from very different worlds, and really learn a lot from each other’s experiences. I loved how they learned from each other, and did their best to be supportive. We also get to see a lot of old friends, and make some fun new ones!
-Drag Queen/ Rugby player
-Self-acceptance
-Spicy spice level!!!
-A not so meet cute
-A fabulous supportive family

I wanted to love it.

The writing was good.

Lovable characters

Steamy.

Romantic.

Great message.

But I got bored. It was missing something for me. Based on other reviews, I'd say it's a case of me and not the book.

As a big fan of drag queens, I loved that story and was soooo happy to read a romance between a sparkling Drag Queen and a rugby player. In general, the story is light and sparkling until we are faced with hate, homophobia, bullying… but I really liked how the subject was explained from both points of view, as they have different lifestyles and pasts, Rory aka Bubblegum Galaxy and West didn’t have the same reaction but also didn’t live it in the same way and both of theirs are legitimate.
There is this deep understanding, communication, will to share, learn from one another. And West relationship with both Rory and Bubblegum Galaxy is sooooo cute and sweet.

I really loved that journey and I’m really excited for more of these Drag Queens !! They are exceptional 🤩
Also, Rory has an amazing family and most of West's teammates are great and supportive, GO Mason 💪🏻

I received an ARC Copy of this book from Foreword PR, this review is from my own thoughts 😍

This was very nearly 5 stars for me. I had way more fun than I expected in a good way! I thought this would be nice enough, but it was sweet and hot and hopeful. The MCs and their families are adorable all around.

Ok, as usual, this is mostly random thoughts I had while reading.

I just freaking adore Rory’s dad. He’s the cutest guy and one of the best parents I’ve ever seen in a book about queer characters. ABOUT TIME. It’s like most authors think it’s “inaccurate” to have good parents for queer characters who accept them completely, and it makes me want to rip my hair out.

West is a bisexual cis white man. He’s very tall and muscular. He’s a professional rugby player. His age is unspecified, but he says he recently reconnected with his brother Theo, and he was 24 when he and Theo found each other again (it lists West’s age in Theo’s book). It was really nice to have him as a character who delights in being bisexual and finds joy in it. He mostly dates/sleeps with women (it’s a numbers game). His family (other than his brother) is queerphobic and hasn’t spoken to him since he came out 4 years ago. He likes caring for people he loves. He’s almost a service top. He’s a people pleaser and doesn’t like conflict.

Rory is a 22 year old cis white gay man. He moonlights as Bubblegum Galaxy, his drag persona. His day job is an electrician (which he enjoys) with his dad and brother. His family is extremely sweet and supportive. His dad has a rough past of fights and getting into trouble, but usually to right a perceived wrong for someone else (like a northern English Steve Rogers). He’s caring and very fond of his wife and sons. Their mom has less screen time but is sweet and supportive as well. He has a brother who is deaf and I think who is younger.

“There’s nothing wrong with being a masculine man or feminine woman and having traditionally accepted interests or desires, like marriage and babies, but you can’t punish or ostracise other queer people for not wanting those things. ”
I liked that this book addressed a couple different kinds of queerness, namely visibly queer people and more cishet-passing queer people. I appreciated the “don’t join the Leopards Eating Faces group if you don’t want your face eaten” conversation, lol

West is bisexual and hugely enjoys being bisexual. But he also doesn’t like conflict, so when people make asinine comments or ask invasive questions about his bisexuality, he lets it slide all the time, finding that if he doesn’t make a fuss it makes things easier. West is naive about violence and discrimination about queer people. He’s a cis, masculine, white, gender-conforming, straight-passing bisexual man who mostly has women partners, and a male-dominated career. It’s perfectly reasonable for him to decide that talking about his bisexuality is “flaunting” it and too risky, that’s up to him. But he also fails when it comes to shutting down hatred toward Rory if it will affect West’s life. He doesn’t quite understand why Rory or others would choose to appear queer and become targets for hate. He’s mostly naive about it and is not actively queerphobic (but is passively queerphobic). He took a while to realize that a straight-passing cis man who mostly dated women doesn’t have the same kinds of challenges as a more femme man who is visibly queer and cannot be attracted to women. That’s not to say being bi doesn’t have significant discrimination attached to it, just that it’s not the same.
“There’s no guessing about it. You matter, West, and you’re allowed to be openly bi without people being dicks. Every LGBTQ+ person is allowed to decide how open and visibly queer they are and how much they share with other people, but it should always be up to them to decide, not anyone else.”

I like that the book addresses that “just make yourself appear straighter” isn’t a solution. That’s making someone closet any part of their queerness and that’s not right, and will inevitably be a “victory” for bigotry that will lead to further restriction of rights. We’ve seen that in real-time lately with anti-trans and other anti-queer laws on the rise. There is no bottom to cruelty, and capitulating will lead to a downward slide.

I do think Rory and his dad were extremely understanding of West letting his roommate vomit queerphobic hate speech all over Rory without saying a word, which wouldn’t be OK even if West was a stranger to him. But they understand that West’s life has necessitated a level of closetedness and conforming to cishet standards and being quiet to appear to “agree” when his coworkers in sports say crap about queer people. West only somewhat noticed this in his life, since in general he identifies with a lot of classic cishet expectations. But that isn’t the same as feeling ok being railroaded into those expectations all the time. I think it’s good to be understanding. But I think Rory and his dad forgiving West almost immediately without even an apology for not standing up for someone he cares about was more than I could do. Rory even blamed himself more than halfway because he thinks the hate speech was maybe right that he was too dramatic and visibly queer and he was accepting that West might dump him because of it (though to his credit he had no intention to conform just to make jerks happy). I did see West’s end of things and I got it and I was forgiving of West, but I think Rory and his dad are maybe just nicer people than me, lol! I would need at least a performative “sorry, mate, but it’s not safe for me to defend you.” Which I’d totally get. But also wouldn’t keep dating him, bo hard feelings. We got a better ending than that though, so that’s nice. West did a good job of realizing he was wrong and accepting no excuses for himself, which won me over.

Tropes and content warnings:
—Queerphobia
—Femme-phobia
—“The good kind” of queers and “the bad kind”
—Naive MC
—Threat of violence against people in drag for being visibly queer
—Semi-closeted MC
—Supportive and loving family

—Meet cute
—Casual sex to relationship
—Gay x bisexual romance
—Side character who is a sex worker, positive portrayal
—Relationship fails
—Relationship wins
—One MC carries the other around sometimes

Other:
—First person dual POV
—Romantic Rival: no
—Cheating: no
—Breakup: no, but almost. They talk about it and resolve the issue before it leads to a breakup
—Kids: no
—Sexual roles: strict (Rory enjoys bottoming and West enjoys topping)
—HEA: yes

This book is just so right. West was brought up to hide part of himself from his professional and personal life to avoid conflict, Roary was not he was brought up to be out and proud in both his professional and personal life. With such different pasts, it was easy to see why issues presented, but these two talked as soon as they noticed the issue, and for that, I commended them. The chemistry is palpable of these two its no surprise everyone can see their is something more. Roarys family is the best ever, and I love how accommodating they are to both their children and the curve balls life throws their way, the kind of love all families should show their children.
The court drag family is one that I need to get to more from each other, and everyone has an engaging personality that just draws you in and wants more. Loved seeing past couples and how they all are tied together!

Audio update: Dan Calley made this beautiful cast of characters come to life with more heart and soul than just the words could have done! Seriously, so much fun! And again, let's just say I want to be a part of Roarys family! Dan has a gift of making each voice have their own personality, which just makes him a 1 click buy narrarator every time!

Just like all of Charlie Novaks books I’ve been looking forward to getting my hands on this and and finally seeing West and Rory get their happily ever after.

We previously got to meet West in Like I Wanted he was Theos younger brother and they haven’t seen or spoken to each other in serval years. He lives in Lincoln and plays professional rugby. Rory is a drag queen that goes by Bubblegum Galaxy and absolutely loves it and wants to continue to do more with his drag career. You wouldn’t think these two opposites would work so well together but they do.

We don’t have to wait long at all for these two to meet. The story kicks off with Bubblegum Galaxy about to preform at a drag brunch and getting all ready to go and do what she does best, being fucking fabulous. Of course West was there with a few of his teammates and one thing leads to another and he ends up with a lap full of sex on the beach and a very apologetic Bubblegum Galaxy and when these two meet for the first time sparks are definitely flying.

I did really enjoyed how realistic their relationship is and how it develops. I loved how West finds Rory on instagram and decides to message him and eventually ask him out. It’s so realistic to how many people end up talking these days and I enjoyed that aspect a lot. I really loved watching their relationship grow and seeing these two grow from having a causal hook up relationship to dating and then becoming an official couple. It was so sweet and I loved watching West treat Rory like the queen that he is.

Speaking of that, the way West just absolutely supports and loves and just cares about Rory was so heartfelt. Especially the way he just embraces and supports him doing drag. Never wanting him to change who he was. And when it came to him needing West after a encounter with a couple of assholes wanting to harass him and his other drag queens he didn’t hesitate to come running to him and wanting to protect him at all cost.

When it comes to the main conflict of the story it centers around Bubblegum Galaxy during a in person story hour with children and the stress and struggles that come with that and also how to world perceives it. In my opinion I think this was handled really well. I loved getting to see something like this told in a book and see it from the perspective of the drag queens and know everything comes from a good place. And seeing Bubblegum Galaxy just absolutely embrace the hell out of it and not letting anything stop her from during it was absolutely beautiful and incredible.

One of the best things about this book is all the side characters! We literally see or hear about all the past characters and couples from the previous books in this universe and I loved all the easter eggs that the author gave us. It really is a small world and I loved every minute of it. Seeing Theo and Laurie again was so nice and seeing Theo support West and be honest with him was great. When it comes to Rory family and friends, oh my god I just loved everyone! His family was the most supportive people ever and loved him to pieces and were ready to go to war for him. I especially loved his little brother Christopher and really hope we get a book about him.

Of course can’t leave out the spicy scenes. I wasn’t expecting much but boy did things heat up between these two and it was delicious. It was so good.

They was so much about this book that I absolutely loved and enjoyed but they was also some parts that let me down. For one the miscommunication was so annoying between West and Rory. Not once throughout the whole book did they stop and just communicate to each other how they were feeling and where they were at they just expected each other to read the other mind or didn’t want to rock the boat. Later on towards the end they did come back together and communicate their feelings and make vows to be honest going forward with each other but throughout the whole book I was like this all could be avoided if they would just talk. And at a point it does get annoying and frustrating.

Secondly I so wish we got more scenes of just Rory and West dating and spending time together that wasn’t spent in Wests bedroom. We get one date with them and that’s it and the rest was just told to us not shown and I really wanted to see more of them dating. That brings me to my next point of a lot of things get told to us rather then shown and when it came to some scenes I really wanted to see or at least know how some conversations went we just get told that it happened and not shown.

And I can’t be the only one that was curious to see how Bubblegum continues to grow and work towards one of her biggest dreams of being on Drag Stars it kind of felt like it was thrown in and just left behind and I really wanted to see how that continues to go for her later on. And Rory never goes to a rugby game to see West not once throughout the whole book but West goes and supports Bubblegum more then once and really makes an effect. I didn’t get that from Rory and towards the end I was wondering if we would ever see that cause that’s a huge part of Wests life but we do get to see that at the end but it’s not until the epilogue though.

Overall this was a really good and lighthearted read while also having really good realist elements added to it that was really lovely to see from other people’s perspectives. They were stuff I wish was done better but the overall story was really beautiful and a lot of fun to read, which I don’t expect nothing less from this author. Seeing how this author continues to grow this universe is the absolute best and my favorite part of reading her books. I loved all the characters and crazy moments and banter. I can’t wait to read the next book and see where this continues to go.

i really need my romance novels to stop doing Teachable Moments but otherwise i'm having fun with this one!
once again here to complain about Teachable Moments

i have now finished the book. it was adorable except for i don't really need Intro To There Is No One Way To Be Queer in my gay romances. and i really hope, actually, that people reading these don't either but you never know i guess? anyways so all that wasn't for me and it got kind of in the way at some points but overall this was pretty decent!

Bubblegum Galaxy is larger than life, a Drag Queen whose greatest wish is to get onto Drag Stars UK, she has been honing her craft and is at the top of her game, this is the year, she is sure of it, that she’ll get onto Drag Stars UK. She has a supportive family in her parents and brother and in her family of the other Drag Queens she performs with. Life is good, sparkly and vibrant it can’t get any better.

West is a professional rugby player, big and brawny, whilst he’s out as Bi-sexual, he shies away from conflict and sometimes lets comments about him go to far. It’s difficult being a professional sportsman and he doesn’t want to stand out as different or difficult in case it affects his position on the team.

Two very different people at very different places in their lives, but a chance encounter at the drag brunch Bubblegum Galaxy is performing at, an accident with a jug of cocktails and things will never be the same again for either of them.

Bubblegum Galaxy is a joy, happy in her skin both in and out of drag. It is so cute the messages they send, as they start to get to know each other. The realisation that they both want more than friends with benefits, though they both enjoy the benefits so much. The growth of their relationship and the inevitable pitfalls they face.

I felt that West had the greater journey of discovery, about himself, but mostly about how he has over the years made himself less, so he fits into society, not so much about his physical space but much more about his mental space. It was interesting to see how his past influenced this journey and it was wonderful to see relationship with his long-lost brother developing.

I really enjoyed the Heather Bay characters cameo’s, it was so nice to see them pop up in this book, playing video games and meeting up.

It was also great that Bubblegum Galaxy has a supportive family, who help to make her outfits. The idea that her father, former skinhead, football hooligan and tough man, not only accepts that his son is gay but also wants to be a Drag Queen and sits happily sewing on sequins. Her family gives advice, teases, but is always there in times of need, they are the epitome of unconditional love and support. They are an amazing family who love him as Rory, but equally love her as Bubblegum Galaxy. It was so cute that West immediately started to learn British Sign Language so he could talk to Rory’s brother and the acceptance he felt from Rory’s family helped so much with the estrangement he has from his own family.

A wonderful book about acceptance and love, building a relationship and weathering whatever life throws at you, standing firm in your resolve to be yourself and finding the courage to stand by your convictions whatever others may say or do.

Comparing the drag queen main character in this story, Bubblegum Galaxy, to the drag queen protagonist of an earlier Novak book would be easy, but this author immediately puts her excellent characterization skills to work by making their personalities and general vibes drastically different (in both drag and boy mode). At the same time, I love that this book is set firmly in the extended world this author has created for her books while also working nicely as a stand-alone. The easter eggs and appearances are fun, but you don’t need any of that context to appreciate this sweet romance that doesn’t shy away from addressing real-world issues.

There are hints of “opposites attract” vibes to the relationship that develops between Rory and West, but those are quickly left at the surface level as these men explore their initial chemistry and learn that they might be a perfect match in the ways that matter. In contrast to the immediate and easy spice between them, the gentle way these men fall for each other is delightfully swoony. Though this isn’t a traditional holiday romance, despite the time of year the book is set, it certainly provides the same sweet level of enjoyable feels that make those stories popular.

What keeps this book relevant to any time of year is the nature of the conflicts for the relationship arc and the various external plots. Novak might mine contemporary issues to create realistic problems, but she roots them so firmly in Rory and West’s lived experiences that they never become preachy. This book is a good window into how actual people are affected by certain issues, such as biphobia and the more general discrimination against the queer community.

I’ve always enjoyed Novak’s secondary characters, but even though this isn’t one who will eventually get a book of his own, I want to give a shout-out to Rory’s dad. It can be fun to play the game of calling “dibs” on certain characters, but I want to do the opposite here – Rory’s dad should be everybody’s dad. The heat between Rory and West is fun, but the support Rory receives from his father in this book is even more heartwarming.

Part of the fun of drag queens is the similarities and differences that can come into play between different facets of a single character. Novak captures that so well here, making so much that I learned about Rory a delightful surprise (such as his unexpected day job). I can’t wait to explore more of these amazing, multi-dimensional characters and meet the people who fall for them.

Shannan – ☆☆☆☆
DRAMA QUEEN is the first book in The Court series.

Bubblegum Galaxy (Rory) loves what she does on stage as a drag queen. She loves working at The Court, but she never expected a misplaced elbow to a waitress with a pitcher of drinks and a sexy rugby player all to happen at the same time. When the pitcher spills in the lap of the rugby player, Bubblegum is mortified. She never expects West to find her online and ask her out for drinks.

West and Rory couldn't be more different but that is what makes them work so well together. Rory has his family’s support in everything he does. West, on the other hand, hasn't spoken to his family since he came out publicly as bisexual. After hearing about Rory's run in with a drunk man spitting a homophobic rant at him and his friends, West is taken back by Rory's confusion at his rationalizing of the incident. After a tough look at himself, he comes to understand he's letting his teammates say demeaning things to him about his sexuality to not cause problems.

I loved seeing West's understanding of himself and that just because he's bi he doesn't need to accept that behavior. And Rory seeing he had an army to protect him at the story time. They had such a sweet relationship. Not at all a fluff read but it dealt with some deep topics as well. I can't wait for more!

What a fantastic story! I love the characters, their relationship development and the mix of light and darker moments.
Rory is sassy and sexy as his drag persona and confident in himself out of it. Knocking a drink into West during a drag hosted brunch leads to a whirlwind hookup-to-romance relationship. West is so lovely and clearly taken by Rory/Bubblegum Galaxy. He's very supportive of all aspects of Rory's life and finds them beautiful however they are dressed at the time. This is a fairly low angst romance story but the trouble comes with homophobia from others, West's experiences of biphobia and also not as an obviously gay man.
Firstly, these two are exceedingly hot together, one scene especially stands out to me! I love the instant connection they share and how quickly they come together, wanting to be together and closer. Secondly, Charlie's opening up the world of drag to readers in a spectacular way. Behind the scenes and on stage, I really felt the love and contentment that the performers were getting from it. For Rory, it's just a part of him, Bubblegum Galaxy is an extension of his personality that allows him that extra glitz and glam that he doesn't get as an electrician. Then there is the subtle biphobia that West experiences whilst at the club where he plays professional rugby, the non acceptance from his parents, and the learning curve that we watch him go through in this story, which Rory brought to his attention and helped him with, without knowing it.
I really enjoyed the side characters that we meet and cannot wait to get to know them better. It's also a lot of fun having men from the author's other series come in and be a part of this new world we're getting to know. One of my favourites is Rory's dad. So unexpectedly supportive and protective of his son, both sons really, it's wonderful to read.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

4.25 Stars!

This is a low-angst story of a drag queen and a rugby player meeting under less-than-ideal circumstances but still finding their way to love and happiness. I loved West and Rory/Bubblegum Galaxy, as well as almost every other character, especially the other drag queens. I absolutely need to go back and read Always Eli, which I've been meaning to do for far too long. I liked Mason, West's friend, and I hope that we will see a future story with him in it.

West is a sweetheart who is pretty open-minded. That being said, he has definitely had a different set of experiences and handled them the best he knew how. I could understand West's confusion when he didn't understand what his brother and Rory had been telling him, but I was glad when he finally understood what they had been experiencing and made some changes. I loved how he dropped everything to help Bubblegum Galaxy, even when it meant meeting her family for the first time under less-than-ideal circumstances. I loved how levelheaded Rory's father was and how he laid out and helped Rory see things from another perspective. There was subject matter that fit with the current societal issues, and a couple of times things got a little close to preachy, but overall it was handled well.

All in all, the storyline was really good. I liked seeing Rory and West working problems out like reasonable adults. I was happy that West had friends on his team to back him up and stand up for him as well as Rory. I loved Rory's family and how they all helped Bubblegum Galaxy when needed. I was happy with how Rory and West worked things out and supported each other. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next one in the series.

** If the score is ONE EMOJI that means little to none of whatever category/trope was present in the book.

West and Bubblegum Galaxy have the cutest meetcute. From there West meets her alter ego Rory whom he likes equally as much. The two hit it off. The book takes us on the evolution as they go from hookup to FWHS to so much more. You will love going on this journey with them.

Rory is a drag queen and we get a lot of fun times in that world. What stands out is West right from the beginning recognizes the differences and similarities in Rory and his drag persona Bubblegum Galaxy and understands that he has to except the whole of Rory and his two sides individually. This is executed so well.

The MMCs in this book are young adults yet mature. One of the best things they do very well is seek wisdom from others when they are unsure. That makes for a great book with minimal angst and internal drama.

There are external issues the couple must face and it is wonderful to witness how they handle it. Rory and West are both so dang likeable that they often just make you smile. The supporting characters are so much fun. I adore Rory's family.

This is a fun read that is fluffy with a lot of substance. Read this one as soon as you can.

While there was a lot to like about this story, there were things that took away from it, so for me if fell solidly in the middle. Not a rating I usually pick, and I don't know why I feel so uncomfortable about it, but. I am not a huge fan of sex scenes, and I am supremely and strangely put off by the word c*m. Use ANY other word, or spell it come, and I'm good. Use c*m as a verb, and I am out. However, the (far too frequent) sex scenes in this book were quite long and overdrawn, and involved a lot of stuttering, so much so that they were easy to skim over---probably the only thing that saved this book from being a two-star or less, or even a DNF. There was a point I skimmed a little too far and missed a transition from one day to another, but don't think it made that much difference, since they obviously got out of bed, changed locations, and went right back at it without me spotting the break.

The above aside, I will probably continue to read books by this author, just not as avidly as some other writers' work. I loved the characters and story line, and the various issues brought up are timely and well handled. It's plenty entertaining, but it wants a little more verve and wit. For me, it's kind of a shame that the sex scenes overwhelm a lot of very good messages. Cuddle and talk more, fuck less. One more bit: at the beginning of the story, the author lists the stage names of the drag queens and kings along with their pronouns, both in and out of drag. Since she occasionally uses their off-stage names, it would have been helpful to list those as well. Also more correct? It's not like they stop existing (except as pronouns) when out of drag...
