In the Care of Magic

Rate this book
Jillian Docherty is the only witch in a town of humans, who regularly take advantage of her magic services. Overworked and underappreciated, she escapes her town for a much-needed holiday in her childhood home: a lovely cottage situated deep into the woods.
When she comes across a very unexpected and interesting book promising her company and pleasure, Jillian realizes she may have finally found the relaxation she desperately craved. But she never expected to make friends with a sex demon…

In the Care of Magic is a cozy story about a plus size bisexual witch finding comfort and companionship with an aromantic agender sex demon. Their relationship is queerplatonic, not romantic!

This is a DNF at 30%. I enjoyed the storyline and premise of the story but I struggled with the third-person element which was repetitive. Also to my understanding, the author was using pronouns outside of their names Jillian and Lyle examples are:
All additional terms Xe, Xyr, Xem, Xemself
Example: Xe passed Xyr tongue on her skin before Xe lightly bit down on her shoulder, Xyr fangs ripping her skin.
Example: “Oh I see… not so shy anymore.” Xe nodded to Xemself.

I’m struggling to say the terms in my head and then I’m reading each individual letter out which feels like I’m reading it like a robot. it happens so often that it is frustrating. Unfortunately, this book isn’t for me. But this book may be for you!

I really enjoyed this cosy monster erotica! It was simply the loveliest and cutest story I've read in a while 🥰 Here we have a burnout witch and the demon they summoned where they began to closer to one another 👀

I love that this book handles topics like self-love and overworking, as well as the relaxed vibe the book has. It's the perfect cottagecore fantasy for anyone looking for a light-hearted read with spice 🩷

As a person who romanticized literally anything I enjoyed reading about an aromantic demon - it gave me a perspective I didn't knew before.
I loved the vulnerability and the connection between these two 🖤

This was so very sweet and I enjoyed it. Jillian and Lyle helped each other the way any true friends should. Jillian was able to actually relax and Lyle found kindness xe didn’t have before. The spice was fun and unique as well.

Spice: 5/5

Triggers: mention of grief, blood, power differential in sexual relationship (with regular check ins for consent)

Loved that this book was exactly what it promised. Queer, erotic, cozy fantasy. It’s not quite an hea in the traditional sense, but it works for the characters. You’ve got pan rep, neo pronouns rep, trans rep, aromantic rep, and fat rep on page. I’ll definitely be reading more from this author.

Thanks to the author for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

I absolutely adore this book!
There's truly nothing about it that I didn't like!

The characters, the steamy scenes, the domestic bliss, the world—it's simply perfect. I must mention that I read this book during a reading slump because I'm grieving the loss of a family member. This book not only pulled me out of that slump but also became a source of comfort and joy.

I really like our MC, Jillian. As a single person in my late twenties, I deeply resonate with her, especially since I also identify as bisexual. I thoroughly enjoy her sassy personality, and how she fearlessly explores her sexuality to enhance her and Lyle's pleasure.

I also have a soft spot for Lyle, our smexy cinnamon-roll demon. Xe’s so sweet, caring and fvckin hot. Xe makes me wish I could summon my own personal sex demon.

The book also excels in portraying a healthy intimate relationship that doesn't necessarily revolve around romance. Yet, it’s still making me feel the feels.

The intimate scenes are handled with great tact and taste, I greatly enjoyed them and always looked forward to the next one after each encounter.

I appreciate the inclusion of trans joy moments towards the end of the book. We all need transition by magic.

In the end, I feel that I’m not ready to say goodbye to them yet. Perhaps the Author would like to make this a series? Pretty please… More featuring Lyle’s backstory? 🥹

In my opinion, this book is a stellar debut for Robin Jo Margaret in the realm of cozy queer erotica. I will eagerly anticipate their future works in this genre.

Are you looking for a short, sweet, cozy and steamy queer escapism? 20/10 would recommend.

“Your value isn’t in what you do, and it’s especially not in what you do for others….You should do things because you enjoy them and because you want to do them, not because you need to be useful to others and yourself.”

This is erotica romance, so the majority is sex based but this book is SO COZY AND SWEET as well.

Jillian is a bisexual witch and she is exhausted with townsfolk only seeing her as a potion producer. So she does what every witch would do, goes to a cabin deep in the woods for a vacation and summons a sex demon.

Lyle is a sex demon who can turn down whatever jobs xe doesn’t want. But xe very much wants Jillian. But also xe is somewhat exhausted from the day to day work of being a sex demon.

But they just like each other’s company so much. So they bake together and go on picnics and she wants xym to stay with her and xe’s like YESSSSS PLEASE.

I LOVE THESE TWO.
HAPPY ENDING, SUPERB STORY.

(I received an ARC of this book but I actually love it and you should all read it).

“Your value isn’t in what you do, and it’s especially not in what you do for others,” xe calmly said, making her heart squeeze painfully. “You should do things because you enjoy them and because you want to do them, not because you need to be useful to others and yourself.”

hmmm love this. bisexual witch heroine and agender demon hero having fun. first parts were mostly smut but then there was some self love and deep talks. perfectly balanced.

Received from Booksirens. Nope, I didn't get paid for this. Yep, full honesty.

The relationship was cute. The village was one of those with selfish ungratefuls and it was surprising she stayed for so long putting up with it. It was a relief when she took matters into her own hands. The relationship was sweet, I liked how it built up into a friends with benefits type. I didn't like the ending. It felt a bit misery loves company, returning to the place she wanted to escape. I did like that they could have their own private conversations.

This book was fun and honestly, exactly what I was looking for. Overworked and underappreciated witch who just wants to get away for a bit? Sign me up!

The book was sexy, fun, and cute as hell.

Honestly, the main thing that took me out of it a bit was some mix up with the demon's pronouns - it's a really minor thing but it just left me confused and tarnished some of the flow. If I could I would give this 4.5 stars instead of 4!

Overall though, I highly recommend it.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

4.5 (Overall Rating) 2.5 (Spice Rating)

- Neopronouns rep
- Aro/acespec rep
- Plus size rep

A wonderful cottagecore-esque novella involving an overworked witch (she/her) and a distant s*x demon who has been used and forgotten (xe/xem).

While this is erotica, it is a platonic intimacy with love, just not the romantic kind.
I highly recommend it for the representation and a unique story with spice and love - just not in the typical sense.

I look forward to more of the author's book (their intentions are to write more queer + monster romance.)

MY HEART 🥺🥺🥺

This was an absolute delight of a debut, Margaret's 'In the Care of Magic' is a wonderfully cosy and heartfelt expression of genderqueer identity and what a happy ending really means. Marvelously sex, body, and relationship positive in a refreshing way we can all benefit from!

!!! Cozy queerplatonic fantasy erotica! I love this. Witch FMC summons a sex demon, who happens to be the precious agender aromantic Lyle.

Insert lots of erotica, a very cool magical toy, bonding over shitty humans, and gardening.

A very good mix of cozy and horny! Also love neopronouns used :)

This story truly touched my heart.
Lyle and Jillian were both so kind and sweet. I could very much relate to Jillian not knowing how to actually not do anything and relax.

I very much appreciate that the story explored different ways in which (platonic) partners can be intimate, both physically and emotionally. Even when Lyle expressed that xey would never be able to return romantic feelings, it was very clear in the story that xey does feel affection and cares about Jillian. It was beautiful to see that Jillian and Lyle came to a mutual understanding in which the feelings and needs of both parties were respected. The relationship portrayed was one of the softest and loveliest I have recently read.

3.5⭐️ YALL… IM TO STUNNED TO SPEAK!!! PLEASE read this so we can talk about the magical sex toy. I don’t want to say anything to spoil it but that was honestly the most creative use of magic I’ve ever read.

Besides the magical sex toys and excellent spicy scenes I really loved getting to know these characters. Jillian and Lyle were so sweet with one another and I really enjoyed their journey. I was also really satisfied with the ending! Overall GREAT time and definitely worth the read!

THIS WAS AMAZING.

There's so much to love about this book that had me giggling and blushing as I read it. Jillian and Lyle are not only great characters but also very cute together. I loved Lyle's talks about xyr gender!!! I loved the way both of them connected without the need for romantic feelings. I really liked the exploration of mutual trust and love as love is beyond just romantic feelings mixed in sexual desires. Their love made my heart melt in all the best ways possible.

Reading about a plus-sized MC with an agender aro demon who worships her was truly healing some past scars within. It is truly a lovely erotic and cosy story that only leaves warmth within after finishing and leaves you wanting to read more about them.

I can't wait to read more from the author cause this is an excellent debut!!!

I love everything cozy monster erotica so I was excited to read this!

Jillian is an overworked and under-appreciated witch escaping to her cozy cottage for a much needed break. What she doesn't expect was a sex book in her library to entice her into summoning a sex demon...

The Good
This book was a great mix of cozy and spicy. The fantasy world and cottage in the middle of the woods really set the scene for the story. Jillian and Lyle are both people who found themselves overworked and lacking connection and company. Jillian by the humans in her village and Lyle by the human who summon xem. I loved the conversations between them as they began to open up to each other. The spice was also very interesting! There was something done in here I haven't see in any of the many monster erotica I've read and it was fascinating. I also liked that this story highlighted that you don't necessarily need romance to foster intimacy and connection with another person.

Tropes:
— Nbi Love Interest
— Witch x Demon
— Plus Sized Rep

Horn Level: 5/5🌶️ (!!!)
Format: Ebook — Arc!

The Rating
I give this book a 5/5🌟 rating. This story was a delight. Cozy, sexy and queer! I had so much fun reading it and I need to read more from this author!

Thanks for the author for giving me an eARC of the book!!

Wow what an absolute delight, just finished it few minutes ago😍 I honestly loved everything about it, I don't even know where to start. Maybe at the fact that this book is marketed as "cozy erotica" and lived up to it! Recently I've read so many stressful books, so diving into this one full of coziness and low angst was just what I needed. Also, erotica.... I haven't read much smut lately since I started to find some frequently used formulas very boring. This book was such a refreshment in that aspect also, involving a hot, attentive, dominant sex demon & a snarky witch who only likes to be bossed around in the bedroom (😏) and many unique magical kinks and scenarios. I could also relate to it more than I do to cis-centered smut, as it was written by a trans author. Beyond that, sometimes I felt like Robin Jo Margaret was reading my mind kink-wise😳

Aside from the spicy stuff, this book discusses some more serious topics such as career burnout, the importance of selfcare, and the importance of consent. Also, it has amazing plus size representation & queer representation. From the latter, it was the aromantic rep which I especially appreciated, and how the entire book is about a relationship which is both sexual and affectionate, YET not romantic. None of the characters felt any compulsive need for romance; their relationship and their life could be complete without it.

I felt so seen and comforted by this book. Jillian and Lyle's relationship in a cottagecore setting was a very wholesome experience to read 💞

What a sweet and cozy story!

First off, I admittedly had little to no understanding of what it actually means to be agender and aromatic—but the way these designations are presented in this story is really quite simple. I think some of us (hi! 🙋🏻‍♀️) just overcomplicate things that are unfamiliar..but I appreciate being able to learn about these things just by reading a cozy little paranormal novella!

These characters are lovable and understanding. The idea that they are able to just enjoy each other’s company and affection with complete trust and care, and without the pressure of self-imposed societal expectations, makes for such a refreshing reading experience!
I look forward to reading more from this author, and this universe!

Thank you so much to author Robin Jo Margaret for providing me with an eARC of this novel! All opinions within this review are voluntarily given and entirely my own.

In the Care of Magic is a queer, cozy, slice-of-life monster erotica that is both sweet and sensual in equal measure. The plot and erotica are balanced well, and the erotic scenes are creative and quite enjoyable. It is so incredibly nice (and important to me) to have queer comfort and queer pleasure occupying the same space, and also very nice to see a depiction of intimacy and tenderness existing within a relationship without it being driven by romance.

In the Care of Magic is the first book in Robin Jo Margaret's Supernaturals of Balkwill series. Here's what you can expect from Jillian and Lyle:

💚 Supernatural romance
💚 Third person single point of view
💚 Guaranteed happily ever after
💚 Slice-of-life cozy erotica novella
💚 A burnt out witch and a sex demon
💚 Bisexual representation
💚 Plus-sized representation
💚 Agender main character
💚 Aromantic representation
💚 The use of neopronouns
💚 Platonic relationship (as opposed to romantic)

As always, ensure you review the content and trigger warnings to decide if this book is right for you. Note that this list of warning and triggers may be incomplete. Please take care of yourself while reading.

“So delicious,” xe mumbled messily against her. “I could taste you every day for the rest of my life and never get tired of it.”
This novella came recommended to me from a trusted book bestie when we were chatting about aromantic representation in our reading. Seeing as I don't see a lot of aromantic representation in romance (and then I heard there were demons), I was sold. And this book? I absolutely adored it. I want only the best things for Lyle and Jillian. The only issue I had was that it could be a little bit longer (but the author has blessed us with The Witch and her Demon as an extended epilogue!). Jillian and Lyle have such a unique relationship, but I appreciated their honesty, communication, and discussion about what works best for the two of them. I loved seeing such a strong female main character like Jillian, and appreciated her plus-sized representation. When we meet her, she's burnt out and overworked (and those townsfolks? I'd like to have a word with Mrs. Gibson...) I like to think in the end, she needed Lyle just as much as xe needed her. I loved seeing them unwind together at Jillian's cozy cottage and then transition back to the town together.

The spice in this book was fantastic! It truly lives up to it's name as a cozy erotica, which is something Robin Jo Margaret writes very well. I enjoyed how magic played a role in the different kinds of intimacy the main characters engaged in. There was such respect and trust there, that just made it so much better. The aromantic representation in this book was very much appreciated. It was proof that a platonic relationship can exist without romance and be healthy and fulfilling for both parties involved. Romance doesn't have to define us. Jillian and Lyle still get their well-deserved happily ever after, and I'll be honest, I'd die for them and will accept no criticism on that. I'm looking forward to continuing to devour the author's incredible work.
“You’re unbelievably stunning every moment of the day,” xe whispered, xyr voice the softest she’d ever heard it. “But here, in your bed, all exposed and with the sun shining on you, you’re the most gorgeous creature I’ve ever seen.”

“While I love the sexual aspect of companionship, I don’t particularly feel romantic connection,” xe explained, light blue eyes looking right into hers with a hint of vulnerability.
