I especially enjoyed the first and last of these eight stories. I did not like Chopper City. I liked the last pages of Pencil Case because they were in English and gave a very good lesson in achieving a good life--but I did not like struggling through the Spanish language to get there.
Again, this author needs to stop using the computer as editor/proofreader. It does not work. Too many mistakes!
Also, writers should avail themselves of opportunities to learn grammar, usage, and sentence structure lest it appear they are uneducated or simply do not care about the reader. I do recognize that Mr. Ortiz is of Dominican ancestry, but he is living and writing books in America.
On the same day I read a sentence in this book and a title of a television program using the incorrect comparison between two when they were describing the comparison among three (1, 2, 3 or more):
short, shorter, and shortest
less, lesser, and least

Some interesting stories, one quite creepy one and one features a fair bit of Spanish language, with only occassional references or hints as to what's being said (i.e. a translation). I hadn't realised this and it made me struggle to follow the story, which is a shame as it seemed quite a nice, touching story about a father imparting advice and values on his immigrant son.

The author, it turned out when I read the 'about the author' page/info., is latin American, which makes sense.

Generally its a pretty good read - stories about different issues - some appealed more than others.
